Five star Kate O’Connor claims World bronze By Paul Byrne DUNDALK’S Kate O’Connor made it FIVE consecutive medals on the global stage as she smashed the Irish Pentathlon record to claim bronze at the World Indoor Games in Torun, Poland. Kate added Bronze to last year’s haul where she won bronze at the European Indoors, silver at the World Indoors, gold at the World University Games and silver at the Tokyo World Championships. Only two Irish athletes, Sonia O’Sullivan and Catherina McKiernan, have now won more individual global medals at senior championships. The St Gerards AC athlete sealed bronze with an outstanding run in the 800m, run-

ning an indoor personal best of 2:10.26 to finish second in the race. She finished the competition with 4839 points just behind reigning heptathlon World Champion Anna Hall (4860 points) and Dutch athlete Sofie Dokter who claimed gold with an impressive 4888 points. Speaking after picking up the Bronze, the two-time World Indoor medallist said: “I came here with very high expectations and although I maybe didn’t meet them, I’m coming away a world bronze medallist and I really can’t complain with that. I think it’s probably a good thing that I am walking away thinking I could do a little better, but ultimately I’m delighted.
