FUELLING TENSIONS Protestors hold fire for now but warn further protests a real possibility By Paul Byrne THE ongoing protests in opposition to rising fuel costs saw hundreds of people gather at Market Square Dundalk on Sunday with local people affected by the rising costs speaking on stage and telling the large crowds that their businesses were becoming unviable with the rising costs involved with transport. Tensions were high as protestors stated defiantly that they weren’t going anywhere until the burden was eased by the government on hauliers, farmers, taxi drivers and anybody else affected by the rising costs which have seen the price of fuel dramatically increase since the start of the war in the Middle East between The

US/Israel and Iran. The protests which began nationally over a week ago saw a number of protestors join together to block motorway exits and even saw the complete closure of O’Connell Street in Dublin and disruption to transport as lorries and tractors parked in the capital’s main thoroughfare. On Sunday, Dundalk held their biggest protest to date which actually turned into two protests in one which in itself caused tensions between representatives from each protest. Ryan McKeown who was one of the main organisers of the protest in Dundalk accused Sinn Fein of ‘hijacking the event for political means’. Hundreds of people turned out for Sunday’s protest against rising fuel prices which was held in Market Square, Dundalk. Continued on Page 2
