message to EU over beef deal

OVER 100 farmers made their way to Market Square last Saturday morning to take part in a rally in support of their counterparts in Athlone where thousands gathered to show their opposition to the controversial Mercosur trade agreement which was passe din the EU last week.

The Mercosur Trade Agreement with the EU involves four Mercosur countries –Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Irish beef farmers are concerned that the deal could threaten their exports to Europe due to the introduction of lower-cost Brazilian beef. The deal will allow Mercosur countries to

export 99,000 tonnes of beef to the EU at a reduced tariff of 7.5%, compared to standard tariffs of around 40 to 45%.

Farmers say that this will create unfair competition in the market, as they say that Mercosur producers operate under looser environmental, animal welfare and food safety rules.

Last Friday (January 9), a majority of EU member states voted in favour of the deal. Ireland were one of just five countries in the EU who voted against the deal (alongside France; Hungary; Poland and Austria) while Belgium abstained.

EU President, Ursula von der Leyen now plans to travel to Paraguay this weekend to sign the deal with the Mercosur bloc which includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Sinn Fein TD for Louth, Ruairí Ó Murchú was among the protestors who made their way to Market Square on Saturday morning and he warned that the Mercosur Agreement which was passed by EU member states ‘is bad for health and bad for Irish farming’.

The Dundalk TD told the Dundalk protesters that Irish people were ‘way beyond disappointed’ with the EU representatives’ vote on Friday and accused the government of doing ‘far too little, far too late’.

Deputy Ó Murchú urged farmers to ‘keep the government’s feet to the flames’ and said it was ‘not good enough’ that nearly 100,000 tonnes of South American beef could come into Europe under the Mercosur deal.

He said: ‘It is not up to Irish beef standards. This is about health but it is also about sustaining rural Ireland. We are in support of free trade deals but we need to be talking about sustainable farming across Europe and Mercosur

has nothing like that in it.

“The answer is clear from Dundalk and Athlone: this has to be resolved. The only reason anything is happening in Ireland is because of the anger and action by farmers and we are in support of them”.

Deputy Ó Murchú said there is a legal challenge being taken by MEPs in Europe

to the Mercosur agreement and Sinn Féin is this week bringing a Private Members’ Business (PMB) to the Dáil in support of this challenge.

The PMB calls on the government to engage directly with MEPs across the EU to get them to reject the deal.

He said: “We want everyone to be in support of the legal challenge and the PMB

because Mercosur is bad for health and bad for Irish farming. It is simply not good enough.

We all know the issues in relation to hormones and antibiotics in Mercosur beef and the work that Irish farmers have done to set high food standards and quality.

“We need to see that pressure is kept on so that every

Irish MEP votes against the deal and we put more pressure on Europe, to tell them that the deal is not good enough for Irish people, not good enough for Irish farmers and not good enough for the health and safety of the Irish people.

“I ask that everyone is in support of Irish farmers and say no to Mercosur”.

Amy sets her sights on LA Olympics

DUNDALK boxer Amy Broadhurst is setting her sights on qualifying for the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028 having missed out in 2024. Broadhurst made the decision to represent Great Britain in 2024 following Ireland’s controversial decision not to select her for qualifying. The Muirhevnamor southpaw qualifies for Team GB through her dad Tony who was born in England.

In 2024 she lost out in the quarter finals of the qualifiers in Bangkok and afterwards she revealed her heart was broken as it looked as though her Olympic Dream had died.

““My heart hurts like it’s never hurt before. There was a dream inside of me since I was a little girl and today that flame slowly died out,” she stated.

Since then Broadhurst and her partner have welcomed their first child into the world as she took a break from the sport of boxing. Now however the 28 year old has announced that she is chasing that Olympic dream once more and starting this month she will rejoin Team GB and

train four days a week at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. She will compete at 60kgs.

GB Boxing Performance Director Rob McCracken said: “Having worked with Amy previously we know first-hand the level of quality and commitment she brings. When you combine that with her proven track record at international level, it’s clear she has the ability to compete with the very best and has

real Olympic potential.

“Amy will increase the strength in depth we have in the squad and we look forward to supporting her for the rest of this LA28 cycle alongside the rest of the boxers.”

Amy said: “While the initial decision to switch to Great Britain in 2024 was a bit of a whirlwind experience, I was warmly welcomed by GB Boxing and treated really well, so it is great to come

back into the squad.

“There are a lot of new faces and a whole new energy here, but everyone has been so welcoming. It feels like a fresh start, and I am really enjoying working alongside such a talented group of boxers and with top-class coaches that I have already established good working relationships with from my previous time with squad.

“Balancing boxing and being a mum definitely is challenging, but my little boy is my biggest motivation. I’ll be flying from Ireland to GB every week but having him with me every second week will make all the difference and keep me grounded and remind me why I am doing this.

“When I missed out on qualification last time, I was devastated, but now I see it differently. Everything happens for a reason.

“I feel strong and comfortable competing at 60kg. In the past, I was up and down with weight but this time I am focused on staying consistent. I am fully committed to the next two and half years now

and my goal is simple. Train hard, keep improving, and do everything I can to make it to the 2028 Olympics.”

Posting on her social media pages, Amy outlined sponsorship opportunities which she hopes will help her achieve her dreams of making it to LA. Anybody who is in a position to sponsor Amy can contact her via her social media channels.

“I’m working toward qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games. Alongside my athletic career, I’m also a mum to one, which has strengthened my discipline, focus, and determination both in and out of the ring.

“As I progress through national and international competition, I’m seeking sponsorship partnerships to support training, competition, and recovery. In return, I offer professional brand representation and positive visibility aligned with high performance and resilience.

If you’re interested in supporting my journey to LA 2028, don’t be afraid to reach out,” stated Amy.

Amy Broadhurst is chasing the Olympic dream once more.

Funding approved for new €6.5m Domestic Violence Refuge in Dundalk

The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, and Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan TD, have today announced funding approval for the construction of a new domestic violence refuge in Dundalk.

The €6.5 million project is being brought forward by Women’s Aid Dundalk, and the approval announced today will allow them to proceed to formally award the construction contract to the successful contractor, with works commencing onsite shortly after.

The refuge, to be located in Highfield, has been identified as a priority location under the Third National Strategy on Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Strategy – which aims to double the number of refuge units and safe accommodation across the country.

Once operational the refuge will offer 12 residential units, therapeutic spaces, a family access unit, a youth and child support unit, overnight accommodation for staff, as well as outdoor play spaces and resident open space area – which will allow Women’s Aid Dundalk to provide a suite of wraparound services such as counselling and support.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne said:

“I am happy to be in a position to approve this essential funding for Louth. This Government is committed to increasing refuge capacity across the country and to make sure that we support all those who are impacted by domestic violence. Today’s announcement of a modern refuge facility in Dundalk reflects this commitment in County Louth and will provide much needed support within the local community and for survivors.

“Domestic violence and coercive control cannot be tolerated. It may often be hidden, but every single one of us who are in a position to can be part of what is a necessary cultural shift. We should all be actively involved in calling out gender based violence in all the ways it presents itself. Today’s development and vital investment reflects our commitment at the highest level to providing safe spaces that are needed for people to rest, recover and rebuild.”

The Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan, said:

“A facility like this can be life changing for those who avail of

it, and the funding approved today moves us a step closer to making this refuge a reality. The refuge will provide a vital sanctuary for vulnerable women and children, offering safety and care in times of great need.

“Under the government’s Zero Tolerance strategy we have committed to increasing safe accommodation in Louth, and today’s announcement again demonstrates that we are delivering on our aim to ensure that those who need a refuge space will get one.

“This is a collaborative effort, with my Department, the Department of Housing, the Housing Agency, AHBs and local authorities working together to ensure refuge development at scale is prioritised.”

Dr Stephanie O’Keeffe, CEO of Cuan, the national Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Agency, said:

“Women’s Aid Dundalk has been providing vital services for vulnerable women and their children for many years now. This funding allocation will help make the new domestic violence refuge in Dundalk a reality, with Women’s Aid Dundalk leading on this ambitious and important project. This is a positive development not only for County Louth, but for the ambitions of the overall Zero Tolerance Strategy.”

Councillor welcomes reversal of decision to reduce security cover in Lourdes hospital

SINN Fein councillor

Debbie McCole has welcomed confirmation that an additional security officer will be reinstated in the Emergency Department of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. However, she insisted that the decision to reduce security cover should never have been made in the first place.

“I welcome confirmation that the addi-

tional security officer will be reinstated in the Emergency Department at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital from 12th January. However, it should never have come to this.

“The decision to reduce security cover was reckless and completely unjustifiable. I have yet to hear a credible rationale for it.

Last week, two hospital staff were violently

attacked by a patient, an incident that was distressing, traumatic and entirely foreseeable. I wish both staff members a full and speedy recovery.

“Let’s be honest: the dogs in the street knew this was going to happen. There has been a clear and ongoing increase in anti-social behaviour within the hospital, with incidents becoming more serious and

more dangerous.

“I have consistently said that the safety of staff, patients and visitors must come first.

Last week’s incident

proves that we can no longer leave our Emergency Department without a security presence. This is not about overreac-

tion, it is about protecting people at work and ensuring patients feel safe when seeking care.

“This decision

should never have been taken, and lessons must now be learned. Hospital staff deserve better,” stated Cllr. McCole.

Green light for upgrade to Cavan Hill Water Treatment Plant

Installation of new filters to improve water quality for customers in Dundalk

FOLLOWING success of the pilot study on new filters at the Cavan Hill Water Treatment Plant, the green light has now been given to permanent upgrade works which will commence on site later this year. This marks a major step forward in addressing instances of intermittent water discolouration that can affect customers in Dundalk and surrounding areas.

The Cavan Hill supply has experienced seasonal instances of discolouration, primarily due to elevated levels of naturally occurring manganese in raw water during the summer months. Uisce Éireann undertook a pilot study in 2024, trialling new filters specifically designed to re-

move manganese. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in manganese levels, paving the way for a permanent upgrade.

Uisce Éireann’s Ian Walsh is looking forward to getting to ground on the project.

“We are delighted to confirm that the Cavan Hill Water Treatment Plant Upgrade will move forward in 2026. These works will ensure we can deliver long-term improvements to water quality for the communities served by Cavan Hill. The design of the project has been progressing since the pilot proved successful, so once procurement of a contractor is complete, we will be in a good position to start

the works and deliver for our customers.”

In tandem with these preparations, Uisce Éireann’s targeted flushing programme has continued to deliver positive results for customers.

Speaking on the effectiveness of the programme, James O’Hagan, Water Network Operations Manager, said

“The proactive flushing programme has been hugely successful, with a significant reduction in discolouration reports this year. We are committed to maintaining these improvements and will continue to proactively manage the network to ensure the highest water quality for our customers.”

The contract to deliver

the upgrade works is expected to be awarded early this year. Uisce Éireann is committed to keeping all stakeholders updated as the project progresses.

Uisce Éireann is responsible for delivering public drinking water and wastewater services for the people of Ireland. We are committed to enabling communities to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment. Tommy gifts model van to mark 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Redemptorists to Dundalk

SAINT Joseph’s Redemptorists are all set for a year of milestones in 2026 as they celebrate the fact that it is 150 years since the Redemptorists arrived in Dundalk and 50 years since the Parish of St Joseph’s was created by the Archdiocese of Armagh.

To help mark the 150th anniversary of the Redemptorists arriving in Dundalk, local man Tommy Sloane decided to use his carpentry skills to create a 12 inch long model van which has a picture of St Gerard on one side and a picture of St Joseph’s church on the other.
