Hauliers feel the pinch THREATS OF PROTESTS AS FUEL COSTS RISE By Paul Byrne LOCAL hauliers are looking for lasting solutions when Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien meets with Irish Road Haulage Association President Ger Hyland next week. Hauliers had threatened to protest yesterday (Tuesday) due to the escalating fuel costs which Hyland said was “fast becoming one of the biggest crises to face the haulage industry in 20 years”. The industry which was already under pressure from rising costs have seen the war in the Middle East resulting in higher fuel costs in Ireland with some forecourts

charging close to €2 per litre. For the first time in nearly four years, oil prices have surged above $100 a barrel as fears grow that the Middle East conflict could disrupt global supplies. According to James Quinn, from James Quinn Transport in Ballagan the government will be very foolish if they don’t do something to help out the industry. “The sector is under phenomenal pressure right now. It was already under pressure before these fuel costs began to rise last week and now it’s getting to the stage where it’s almost unsustainable. Continued on Page 2
