MARATHON EFFORT FOR RELAY FOR LIFE By Paul Byrne THE countdown is well and truly on for the long awaited return of the Dundalk Relay for Life which will take place this Saturday and Sunday in Dundalk Stadium. The community is being invited to come along at 2pm on Saturday to the 24-hour event which is in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. Well-known local runner Collette O’Hagan, is the Relay for Life Dundalk Ambassador and the Bay Estate native has been doing her bit to raise funds for the event by running a scarcely believable twenty marathons over the past month all over Europe. Her last one took place in Dingle last weekend (Collette’s 1113th marathon in total!) and she managed to raise the sum of €1,650 for Relay for Life Dundalk.
The funds raised at Relay For Life are essential to enable the Irish Cancer Society to provide free, vital support services to people affected by cancer across Ireland and to fuel ground-breaking cancer research. Relay For Life brings the local community together to celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who have been lost to cancer. Participants team up and take it in turns to walk through the day and night, with someone always on the move during the 24-hour period. A key feature of every Relay For Life is the survivors’ lap, where cancer survivors who have lived or are living with cancer are invited to open the event with a special celebratory lap of their local Relay Relay for Life Dundalk Ambassador Collette O’Hagan led by example by raising track. €1650 for the Irish Cancer Society by running a total of 20 marathons last month.
