‘He never forgot his roots’ Tributes paid to Glen Dimplex founder Dr Martin Naughton By Paul Byrne TRIBUTES have been paid to billionaire businessman Dr. Martin Naughton who passed away on Friday in Seattle. The 87-year old was travelling in America with his wife Carmel when he took ill. He died a short time after being admitted to Harborview Medical Centre in Seattle. Martin Naughton was educated in the De La Salle College in Dundalk and studied Mechanical and Production Engineering in college in Southampton, England before setting up Glen Electric in Newry in 1973. The company made electric heaters. The business became a huge success and that suc-
cess grew exponentially when he took over a larger company called Dimplex and thus Glen Dimplex was born. Today the group have operations in 20 countries with over 8000 staff employed. It is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of domestic heating appliances and one of the most successful Irish companies in the history of the state. As well as being one of the most successful businessmen this island has ever produced, Martin was also well known for his generosity and philantrophy. In 1994, he and his wife Carmel established the Naughton Foundation to support worthwhile causes in the arts and education.
