Prep and Senior students have an afternoon each week to explore a huge range of activities. It is an inspiring programme that we are proud of.

CREATIVITY IN THE CURRICULUM
Our commitment to creativity also takes place inside the classroom. We teach academic subjects in an innovative way. We have designed co-curricular lessons which are scheduled into the school timetable.
We want to ensure students learn skills, develop confidence, and gain knowledge which complements the academic curriculum. Lessons include:

DEVELOPING RESPONSIBLE HUMANS
Our students get involved – they initiate ideas and are responsible for implementing them.
Students have perspectives and opinions on issues that matter, in school, in the local community, and in the world. We need to listen to their voice and allow them to lead.
We have a vibrant student leadership team, and we encourage students to get involved in the committees that interest them.
Dukes Young Leaders Award
In our Prep school, students aged 5-11 take part in this award which this helps to promote personal development and leadership skills. Children complete challenges at home and school. Activities range from family walks and trying new sports to organising events or making a speech.
Charity Committee
At the heart of our school is thinking of others and leading with kindness. Through organising fundraising initiatives for those in need, our young people understand the importance of giving to others. They also learn the power of teamwork, organisation, communication and advocacy.
Wellbeing Committee
Our ambassadors are empowered to help others tackle feelings of isolation or to stand up to bullying. The power of talk and a safe space are key. Students work alongside staff to ensure our school offers safety, comfort and a place to belong.
Student Council
Chaired by our Head Prefect and made up with elected delegates from each year group, the Council discuss the issues raised by their peers. They raise matters of concern to our Principal and are key in ensuring our students are at the forefront of any school development. Students learn life skills such as listening, respecting others, professional conduct and diplomacy.
Eco Committee
Our students are keen to care for their local environment and the world around them. They seek to educate the generations beneath and above them to do the same. They have done such a great job that their activities meant we were awarded a distinction in the Eco Schools ‘Green Flag’ award.
Literacy Leaders
The world is full of stories, and our Literacy Leaders encourage their peers to get involved in the world of books. Stories help us to develop empathy – a key ingredient we want our students to develop. These keen readers also help those who find the written word more challenging.

LEARNING OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL
Our educational visits bring classroom learning to life.
There are rich learning resources right here in Cambridge. We also regularly set off to explore further afield.
Residential Trips
There’s loads to learn locally and on foot, but who doesn’t like a change of scene? Our residential trips are essential and great fun. Students surprise themselves as they conquer challenges, learn new skills, become leaders or vital team members. Sometimes they just see great things (that also help with their learning).
We offer UK-based residential trips from Y3 – Y11. Examples include outdoor pursuits at Grafham Water, Camp Wilderness at Cuffley, and team building at PGL Norfolk
Explorations further afield include skiing in the Alps, Business Studies and Classics trips to Italy, discovering awe-inspiring landscape in Iceland, fine-tuning language skills in France and Spain, experiencing the arts and modern history in New York and Washington, scientific and political research at CERN and the UN, Geneva, football in Portugal, battlefield education in Belgium

A high percentage of the jobs of the future do not currently exist. This presents an interesting challenge in education which we face head on. We develop characteristics and skills in our students which will stand them in good stead for the future.

We encourage and develop our students to be the very best they can be and want them to thrive beyond Sancton Wood. Our award-winning careers programme supports students in thinking about their aspirations and futures.
We work in partnership with InvestIN who deliver immersive career experiences. Their programmes aim to create the ‘ultimate work experience’ through visits, seminars, networking sessions, career coaching guidance. Interactive simulations, site visits and exposure to leading professionals.
BRINGING THE OUTSIDE
IN
During their time with us, students have access to a wide range of visiting speakers. They enlighten students about their area of work, ranging from engineering to archeology; fashion journalism to filmmaking; entrepreneurship to philanthropy. It is inspiring for our students to listen to talks from people who are making significant contributions to their specialist area of work.
WE LIKE OUR STUDENTS TO TALK
So much of our co-curricular learning is about communication. Oracy is key to success both at school and in life.
We discuss, we debate, we train students in public speaking, they research and present. Through these experiences – school life becomes real life.
WE ALLOW STUDENTS TO FORM AN ARGUMENT, AND WE TEACH THEM TO LISTEN.
SCIENCE IS ALL AROUND US...
...and we take full advantage of it. Local trips, links with specialist science companies, museums and centres of excellence. Exploring and discovering is key to STEM activities.
CREATIVE ARTS
We value creativity in all its forms. Our in-house team provide opportunity to learn technical skills, design and build sets, perform contemporary and classical music, sing and dance in full-scale musical productions or deliver important messages by acting in a poignant play. We use the arts to support curriculum learning. Trips to exhibitions, live music and poetry performances, local and London museums, frequent visits to renowned productions in Cambridge. Norwich and London. Storytelling and images help subjects stick.
That’s why we do it all and often.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Sport is not just in lesson time. Fixtures, sports meets, scholarship opportunities, European sports tours and celebrating our own students who compete at county and national level.
