Welcome! The Dukes Education Conference 2027 brings colleagues from across the Dukes community together to connect, learn and share ideas about the future of education. This is a time of rapid change and increasing complexity which brings both opportunities and challenges. As we navigate this change, today is an opportunity to consider how we embrace innovation whilst remaining committed to the irreplaceably human; the relationships, values and experiences that sit at the heart of a great education. We hope the day provides space to think and reflect, learn from one another and consider how, together, we can help young people belong, flourish and thrive.

Speaker Sessions Managing Challenging Behaviours in Young Children Sonia Mainstone-Cotton IDL001 • Great Hall INCLUSION AND DIVERSE LEARNERS

Young children communicate their needs in many different ways, and behaviour is often an important part of that communication. This session explores regulation and dysregulation in Early Years and KS1, helping practitioners understand what may sit behind challenging behaviour and develop practical approaches that support children to feel safe, regulated and ready to learn.

Maximising Learning Prof Guy Claxton TL001 • Bobby Moore TEACHING & LEARNING

The Learning Sciences have revealed that three layers of learning occur simultaneously in every classroom: the accumulation of explicit knowledge, the honing of epistemic skills, and the development of more general learning dispositions and identities. All three of these outcomes combine to create the foundations of a successful life. But not all teaching styles foster optimal growth of all three. The even more important contribution of the Learning Sciences has been to identify the design principles of the Maximising Classroom. These include establishing psychological safety, providing engaging challenge, coaching

Drawing on his own remarkable journey and lived experience of ADHD, Alex Partridge challenges traditional perceptions of neurodiversity and explores the strengths that can come from experiencing the world differently. An inspiring celebration of difference, potential and the importance of creating environments in which every young person can flourish.

Dyscalculia in the Classroom Rob Jennings IDL004 • Wembley Suite INCLUSION AND DIVERSE LEARNERS

Dyscalculia can create significant barriers to mathematical learning, but the right classroom approaches can make a real difference. This practical session explores how dyscalculia can affect learners and provides strategies that teachers can use to reduce barriers, build mathematical understanding and confidence, and enable pupils to experience greater success in mathematics.

LEADERSHIP, CULTURE & PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

Education continues to operate within a changing political and policy landscape. This session provides an overview of the key developments affecting the sector, what they could mean for schools and educational organisations, and what may be coming next. It will help leaders understand the wider context in which they are working and consider how best to prepare for future change.

How to Become a World Class School

TECHNOLOGY, AI AND THE DIGITAL WORLD

The advent of AI is changing the workplace, reshaping not only the jobs people do but how skills are developed, evidenced and valued. In this session, Al Kingsley explores the changing relationship between qualifications, skills and employability, including the growing role of microcredentials and new ways of demonstrating what people know and can do. Drawing on examples from other countries and their journeys, he considers how the workplace is evolving and asks what this means for education

Crucially, it will ask whether these capabilities can be intentionally taught and what role schools should play in developing them.

TEACHING & LEARNING

The environment in which young children learn has a profound influence on their development. This session explores how highquality continuous provision can be deliberately designed to encourage curiosity, independence, play and purposeful learning. It considers the role of the adult, the environment and carefully chosen experiences in creating the conditions in which young children can flourish.

Driving Inclusion: Strategy and Practice Georgina Durrant IDL005 • Pitch View 1 INCLUSION AND DIVERSE LEARNERS

Creating genuinely inclusive schools requires more than a commitment to inclusion; it requires that commitment to be visible in everyday practice. This session explores how leaders and educators can translate inclusive vision and strategy into the culture, systems and classroom practices of their schools, creating environments in which difference is understood, barriers are reduced and every child has the opportunity to thrive.

12

INCLUSION AND DIVERSE LEARNERS

How can we design lessons, activities and curriculums to ensure EAL students feel confident, included and have the chance to thrive? This practical session dives into top tips and strategies to support teachers in overcoming language barriers without compromising the quality of the classroom provision. Attending this session will provide support on how to adapt instructions, impactful questioning techniques, using visual and contextual support and checking for student understanding without applying unnecessary pressure. Leaving this session, attendees will have gained practical techniques to support creating an accessible, inclusive and engaging learning environment for students at various English language levels.

The Power of Story

Panel Discussions What Kind of Leadership Does Education Need Now? Heather Styche Patel, Floyd Steadman, Johan Jensen LCPD005 • Bobby Moore LEADERSHIP, CULTURE & PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

Leading in education is becoming increasingly complex. Leaders must navigate rapid change while continuing to build organisations in which people can perform, develop and flourish. This panel brings together different perspectives on the qualities, behaviours and mindsets educational leaders need now and considers how leadership itself may need to evolve in response to a changing world.

Stories help us understand ourselves, make sense of the world and connect with other people. This session explores the extraordinary power of storytelling to engage, inspire and influence. It considers why stories are such a fundamental part of human communication and how we can use them more intentionally to connect with others and bring ideas to life.

TL004 • Venue 2 TEACHING & LEARNING

High expectations should create opportunity rather than barriers. In this session, three Dukes educators share how they create classrooms in which all pupils are challenged and supported to achieve highly. Drawing on their own practice, they will explore how ambitious expectations, appropriate challenge and inclusive teaching can combine to help every child flourish.

We often treat university and career decisions as challenges that begin in sixth form. Yet by the time students are making GCSE, post16 and university choices, many opportunities have already been shaped by the experiences, exposure and skills they have developed along the way. As AI reshapes the world of work and careers become increasingly non-linear, how can schools and parents help students make informed choices while developing the adaptability needed for an uncertain future? Bringing together academic and professional perspectives from Dukes

Education school leaders and Dukes Plus Consultancy and Experiences teams, this panel will explore how exposure, exploration and real-world experiences help students make informed decisions at key transition points from GCSE through to post-18 pathways. Workshop Sessions Dyslexia in the Classroom Kerry Nichols, Lauren Robertson IDL007 • Bobby Moore INCLUSION AND DIVERSE LEARNERS

For pupils with dyslexia, seemingly small aspects of classroom practice can create significant barriers to learning. This practical session explores how teachers can recognise and reduce those barriers while maintaining high expectations. It provides strategies for creating a more accessible learning environment that builds confidence, supports independence and enables pupils with dyslexia to demonstrate their potential.

Thinking Human in the Age of AI Daniela Vasile, Kevin Chung TAD004 • Venue 1 TECHNOLOGY, AI AND THE DIGITAL WORLD

As AI becomes increasingly capable, how do we ensure that it strengthens rather than diminishes professional expertise? This session introduces a practical framework for thinking about the relationship between educators and AI, exploring how technology can support our work while preserving the human judgement, adaptability, expertise and thinking that remain fundamental to great teaching.
