DAWN

We’re very excited to share our spring print issue starring Elizabeth Banks, who is starring in the upcoming Peacock comedy drama series The Miniature Wife alongside Succession star Matthew Macfadyen. I’ve loved her since Wet Hot American Summer, 30 Rock and Pitch Perfect , but she has so many acting and directing credits under her belt. Banks talked to Marshall Heyman about being a producer, actor and director in a changing Hollywood landscape while keeping tabs on her two teenage sons and missing Massachusetts winters.

Christina Ohly Evans traveled to Europe’s latest hotspots to get the scoop on the best places to visit from Germany to Italy and I spoke with doctors about the hottest plastic surgery procedure: the bleph!

We spotlight two beautiful homes in the Sonoma Valley, showcase Dior’s divine new high jewelry collection and the breadth of designer Kit Kemp’s work in homes and hotels around the world. We are so fortunate to have worked with talented pros like Emilio Madrid and Ruben Chamorro on photo shoots that yielded stunning original visuals for our issue.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we did producing it.

The EYES Have It

Eyes are often the first to betray fatigue, stress and the passage of time. The eyes have always

told the story, but there are ways to help them tell it better

In a beauty landscape increasingly defined by subtlety, blepharoplasty (the surgical refinement of the eyelids) has quietly become the gold standard for those seeking to look unmistakably refreshed rather than overtly done. Two things cause a heaviness in the upper eyelid area: excessive upper eyelid tissue, either skin or muscle, and the falling of the brow, causing brow skin to descend and contribute to laxity of the upper eyelid. “A droopy brow should be treated with a brow lift and excessive eyelid tissue should be treated with an upper blepharoplasty,” says Dr. Andrew Timberlake, a board-certified plastic surgeon in New York City. “Often, people only need one or the other, but sometimes people need both to address their concerns. There is real danger in performing an aggressive upper blepharoplasty on someone whose skin excess is contributed to by drooping brows. More and more patients are realizing that the endoscopic brow lift is an essentially invisible procedure [tiny incisions are hidden behind the hairline] that can dramatically improve the appearance of your eyes with minimal downtime.” Each procedure is done in-office with local anesthetics and sedation in under a few hours. Within two weeks armed with oversized sunglasses, your sutures are removed and you’re fully back in action.

Perhaps the greatest appeal of blepharoplasty lies in its longevity. Unlike injectables that require regular maintenance, surgical eyelid rejuvenation offers results that can last for years, even decades. “There are no devices that substitute for surgery when it comes to the need to remove skin, muscle and/or fat around the eyelids,” says Dr. Timberlake. “A blepharoplasty is the only way to definitively address the anatomy. A good candidate for surgery has healthy eyes, a reasonable excess of tissue that can be safely removed via surgery, and is seeking a natural refresh.”

For mild droopiness and not excess skin, Botox and other neurotoxins, when injected properly and by a skilled professional, can lift the brows, causing the eyelids to appear less saggy and the eyes more open. “However, neurotoxin injections are not a suitable solution for patients who have a lot of excess skin on and around the lids, or ptosis (a condition in which the eyelid muscle is weak),” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman of the Shafer Clinic in Midtown Manhattan. What about other injectables? “For patients who have hooded eyes and/or mild drooping, filler can also be an appropriate solution,” says Dr. Engelman. “When injected into the correct areas of the face, it can create a lifting effect that raises the lid and opens up the eye area.”

NOT READY TO GO UNDER THE KNIFE JUST YET?

Blepharoplasty surgery offers great results but, before you book, consider these non-invasive options

The Everesse device leverages single pulse energy delivery to ensure the release of consistent RF energy without treatment gaps, ensuring sustained thermal energy in both the papillary and reticular dermis. This dual-depth approach promotes more effective tissue coagulation and stimulates collagen production, leading to superior skin lifting and tightening. This painless and quick 30-minute therapy can be done twice 2-3 months apart and results are seen instantaneously.

Upneeq is the first and only FDA-approved prescription eye drop clinically proven to lift upper eyelids for adults with low-lying lids (also known as acquired blepharoptosis). Upneeq offers a simple, non-invasive option to visibly open and awaken the eyes—albeit temporarily. The active ingredient in Upneeq works by activating the Müller’s muscle to lift the upper eyelid, making more of the iris and white of the eye visible, which makes the treated eye more open. You just apply the drops in each eye once daily.

UPNEEQ

More and more patients are realizing that the endoscopic brow lift is an essentially invisible procedure that can dramatically improve the appearance of your eyes with minimal downtime.

The architecture is intentionally open, filled with glass and defined by expansive ceiling heights and oversized doors. These elements create extraordinary light and a visual connection to the landscape. A wood-clad ceiling and deep umber wall tones lend warmth and intimacy, establishing a cozy retreat for watching football, relaxing as a family or simply giving the children room to crawl, play and move freely.

WINE COUNTRY Modern

Bay Area designer Kimberly Oxford created a family home that’s grounded, restrained and deeply connected to its natural surroundings

STYLED BY MAHKAMEH ESFAHANI

Perched above a sprawling vineyard is a groundup residential project in Sonoma County wine country designed by Bay Area designer Kimberly Oxford, in collaboration with Bisbee Architecture + Design and Dustin Baxter of Baxter Builders Group. The home overlooks the vineyard with a working barn beyond and uninterrupted panoramic views of Sonoma Mountain. The surrounding landscape served as a constant reference point throughout the design process.

The family home was created with room for childhood.

“The property offers ample space for the clients’ children to run freely, play sports and experience a sense of openness that reflects their own upbringing on a farm,” says Oxford.

“Nothing was intended to feel precious or untouchable. Farm life and real living were constant considerations, and every material was selected for durability, ease of use and longevity. All fabrics were specified as performance or outdoor-grade, allowing family and guests alike to truly relax and use the space without hesitation.”

The homeowners, with whom Oxford has worked for almost a decade across multiple projects, also wanted to be able to entertain graciously both indoors and outdoors.

“A defining architectural feature is the seamless connection between indoors and out,” says Oxford. “Two large sliders discreetly disappear into double-wall pockets within the living space, allowing the living and dining areas to fully open to expansive front and rear entertaining zones. This

fabric have generous proportions and luxurious cushioning. A defining architectural moment is the fireplace, where the stone was intentionally detailed to extend from the interior outward, reinforcing the seamless indoor–outdoor connection and visually anchoring the space to the landscape beyond.

If there is one space that truly defines the home, it is the expansive kitchen, living and dining experience and the way those rooms function as a single, fluid environment. The dining room table was custom designed by Robert James, featuring an expansive length and a steel stretcher that grounds the piece visually and structurally.

The interiors and outdoor living spaces were designed in close collaboration with architect Nate Bisbee, with careful attention to light, view corridors and the surrounding landscape. Executed by Baxter

flexibility was essential to the clients, who wanted a home that could transition easily from everyday family life to large-scale entertaining.” The design is rooted in layered texture and tonal restraint, balancing comfort with bespoke, handcrafted details throughout.

Just as important as the home itself was the site plan. The Land Collaborative, led by Brett McPherson and Danielle Davila, approached the property with remarkable restraint. Rather than competing with the existing vineyard, the landscape design allows it to dissolve naturally into the new outdoor living spaces, creating a seamless dialogue between cultivated land and architecture. The goal for the project was to create a home that felt grounded, restrained and deeply connected to its surroundings. “Rather than pursuing a singular trend or overt stylistic label, the aesthetic is best described as relaxed wine country modern, where warmth, texture and proportion take precedence over ornamentation,” says Oxford. “The design balances clean architectural lines with a livedin sensibility, allowing the home to feel elevated without ever feeling formal.”

Natural materials, subtle tonal variation and handcrafted details were chosen for their ability to age gracefully over time.

“The palette was intentionally quiet, drawing from the surrounding vineyard, olive groves and mountain landscape, so the interiors would never compete with the views beyond the windows,” says Oxford. “The color palette throughout the home is rooted in tonal whites, layered for warmth and depth rather than stark contrast.”

Furniture selections were guided by the realities of country living and a house filled with people. “Comfort was paramount,” says Oxford. “Nothing in the home was meant to feel precious, yet everything was custom-made, considered and crafted to sit beautifully and endure years of daily life.” ■

HIGH-STAKES

Jim Allen is a gaming and hospitality industry veteran with over 40 years of experience and currently serves as CEO of Seminole Gaming, chairman of Hard Rock International, Hard Rock Digital, and recently served as chairman of the board of directors of the American Gaming Association, the gaming industry’s premier trade group with membership representing every corner of the gaming industry.

Responsible for all gaming, hospitality and entertainment operations at the Seminole Tribe of Florida since 2001, Allen has guided the development of Seminole Gaming into one of the world’s most successful casino and integrated resort operators, with seven casino locations throughout Florida, including the world’s first Guitar Hotel, which opened in October, 2019. Allen led the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s 2007 acquisition of Hard Rock International (HRI), the first acquisition of a major international company by a North American Indian Tribe. As

Chairman of Hard Rock International, Allen oversees all operations of one of the most globally recognized brands, known for its unique intersection of music, celebrity and philanthropy. Since the 2007 purchase, Hard Rock has expanded its global presence from 46 to over 70 countries and over 300 locations including Hard Rock cafes, hotels, casinos, Rock Shops and Hard Rock Live music venues. BRINGING THE HEAT

Few names embody the spirit of global leadership quite like Micky Arison, the Israeli-American billionaire businessman whose influence spans both the cruise industry and professional sports. As chairman of Carnival Corporation, the world’s largest cruise operator, and owner of the NBA team Miami Heat, Arison has spent decades steering two vastly different empires to the pinnacle of success. Born into a family of innovators, Arison joined Carnival Corporation in 1972, working his way up through the company his father, Ted Arison, co-founded. By 1979, Micky had become CEO, a position he held for 34 years, overseeing Carnival’s transformation from a single-ship operation into a global powerhouse. Under his guidance, the company expanded to include nine distinct cruise brands (including Seabourn), carrying millions of passengers each year and setting the gold standard for travel at sea. “It’s about more than ships,” Arison says. “It’s about people and the experiences that stay with them long after they disembark.” Beyond the ocean, Arison has also left an indelible mark courtside. As the owner of the Miami Heat since 1995, he helped shape the franchise into one of the NBA’s most respected organizations, leading it to three NBA Championships. His blend of strategic patience and trust

in leadership—most notably in longtime coach Erik Spoelstra and team president Pat Riley—has made the Heat a model of consistency and culture. In the world of luxury travel, few names command as much prestige as Seabourn Cruise Line. Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, and owned by Carnival Corporation & plc, Seabourn has long been regarded as the pinnacle of ultra-luxury cruising. Since its founding in 1987, the brand has embodied the art of travel for discerning guests who value intimacy and exclusivity. Each Seabourn vessel feels more like a private yacht than a cruise ship, accommodating a limited number of guests in all-suite accommodations with sweeping ocean views. The atmosphere is refined yet relaxed, where every detail— from Michelin-inspired dining to personalized excursions—reflects the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship and comfort. “Our guests don’t just want to see the world,” Arison has said, “they want to experience it in a way that feels personal, seamless and transformative.” Recent innovations, including Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit, have expanded the brand into the world of expedition travel — bringing Seabourn’s signature sophistication to some of the planet’s most remote destinations, from Antarctica to the Arctic Circle.

DESIGN WITHIN LIVING

“What’s successful today is not necessarily successful tomorrow,” says Gary Friedman, the chairman and CEO of RH. “So it’s more in the journey than it is where we land.” Given the hockey-stick growth trajectory of the home-furnishings company formerly known as Restoration Hardware, whose new-antique aesthetic is adored by everyone, Friedman could easily coast. But the California native, who made his way from community college and a stock-room job at the Gap to the helm of a corporation valued at around $4 billion, is incapable of resting on his laurels. “We’re taught from the time we’re born not only to conform, but also not to take risks,” says Friedman. “Everything worth doing has some level of risk and some level of adventure. And I think I’m just in the early innings of learning to use my brain.” With new RH Galleries opening in iconic spaces in cities around the world from Dallas to Newport Beach, Paris, Montreal and Detroit, there is lots of room for expansion and excitement.

THE MAVERICK DISTILLER

BRENT HOCKING, spirits entrepreneur

Award-winning entrepreneur Brent Hocking has built a reputation as one of the most visionary forces in the global beverage industry. Known for his ability to spot untapped potential and transform it into culture-defining brands, Hocking’s portfolio spans tequila, whiskey, champagne and beyond. His journey began in 2008 with the launch of DeLéon Tequila. Rejecting additives and shortcuts, Hocking pioneered a new category of ultra-premium tequila, aged naturally in French Sauternes barrels. DeLéon’s success was meteoric, culminating in its sale to Diageo PLC in 2013. In 2016, Hocking partnered with global superstar Drake to launch Virginia Black Whiskey, a bold bourbon that immediately captured the market’s attention. Not one to rest on his laurels, Hocking turned to champagne with the debut of Mod Sélection in 2018. Today, Hocking continues to push boundaries with his latest creations: Tequila Purísima and Brown Sugar Café Mexicana coffee liquor. With each launch, he proves once again that innovation, authenticity and craftsmanship can reshape entire categories in the world of luxury spirits.

THE HOSPITALITY PLAYBOOK

JOHN MEADOW, president of LDV Hospitality

John Meadow is the founder and president of LDV Hospitality, a boutique hospitality group founded on his desire to bring the dream of “La Dolce Vita” to restaurant and bar concepts. Under his leadership, the company has grown to 20 restaurants and bars, spanning nine cities and five countries, with over 1,300 team members. In 2024 LDV Hospitality systemwide sales exceeded $100 million. Meadow began LDV in 2008, with the opening of the critically acclaimed Scarpetta restaurant, followed by signature brands American Cut, Dolce Italian, and The Seville, amongst other bespoke concepts. Since then, he has taken the company abroad with Scarpetta outlets in London’s Bvlgari Hotel, The Edition Tokyo, Waldorf Astoria in Doha, and Ambasciatori Palace in Rome. Recently, The Maidstone on Main Street in East Hampton reopened under the ownership of LDV Hospitality. “It has always been a dream of mine to transition into the hotel space,” says Meadow. “I’ve witnessed firsthand the allure and charm of The Maidstone Hotel as it has been a beacon in the community for many years. In partnership with Irwin Simon and Mayank Dwivedi of ISMD Management, we look forward to bringing new memories to this idyllic retreat.” Prior to creating LDV, the Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration graduate began his career as a manager at the Oak Room at New York’s Plaza Hotel.

MIAMI MODERN

JORGE M. PÉREZ, CEO of The Related Group

Jorge M. Pérez has shaped the city’s skyline for over four decades. As the chairman and CEO of The Related Group, which he founded in 1979, Pérez has transformed Miami into an international hub of architecture, art and design. His company has developed and managed tens of thousands of luxury residences, reshaping urban landscapes across the United States and Latin America. But Pérez’s influence extends far beyond bricks and glass. Born in Argentina to Cuban parents, he brought a unique global perspective to American real estate. “For me, development isn’t just about building structures,” Pérez says. “It’s about building cities that inspire people and reflect the diversity of the world we live in.” A passionate philanthropist and art collector, Pérez has donated hundreds of millions to cultural institutions and causes. The Jorge M. Pérez Art Museum of Miami-Dade County (PAMM) has been the flagship museum for Miami-Dade for almost 35 years. At its founding in 1984, the museum was dedicated to international art of the 20th and 21st centuries, aiming to fill a void in a young city where no contemporary art museum existed. In 2013, the museum expanded into a 200,000-square foot campus prominently located on Biscayne Bay. Beyond his public persona, Pérez is deeply grounded in family. Alongside his wife, Darlene Pérez, he has raised four children, all of whom share his passion for creativity, culture and philanthropy. Together, they’ve become stewards of a legacy that fuses business success with social impact.

A DYNAMIC DUO

TONY AND SAGE ROBBINS

It’s hard to miss Tony Robbins. Not only is he nearly 6-foot-7 and built like a linebacker, he’s a best-selling author, life coach and business strategist, entrepreneur and global philanthropist with a booming voice and an outsize personality. His motivational seminars have helped jumpstart and support many of his loyal acolytes for decades. Sage Robbins has a fraction of her husband’s Instagram followers—133,000 to Tony’s 8 million. But, lately, this Canadian-born speaker, philanthropist and businesswoman is moving into her own spotlight. “I’ve met millions of people over 47 years, and she stands out as the most unique, sincere and loving soul I’ve ever met,” says Tony. “She’s the executive producer of our entire life. I couldn’t do it without her.” They married in 2001. They live in Palm Beach with a young daughter, a late-in-life addition for both Sage, 53, and Tony, 66. (Tony has four kids and five grandchildren from previous relationships.) There’s the She’s Unstoppable Summit, a free virtual women’s conference spearheaded by Sage and friends such as Serena Williams, Tyra Banks, Derek and Hayley Hough and Maria Menounos. “It’s just an opportunity to come together, to connect and to share.” The unifying factor is to “find a kinder way.” “This is a day to celebrate women, to come together and to share in the beauty, to experience other women that are rising above their obstacles,” Sage says. “It’s an invitation back to our nature, to listen to our journeys and find the good.” The conference is yet another extension of the Robbinses’ long-running philanthropic efforts, which have included work on such issues as the environment, hunger relief, animal rescue and stopping human trafficking. Together, Sage estimates, they have planted over 71 million trees. In a decade-long campaign with Feeding America, they have provided nearly 1 billion meals to people in need. Helping people, explains Sage, “doesn’t have to be writing a check. It doesn’t have to be money. It’s just love. I don’t know if it’s my age or my stage of life, but I appreciate the simple things.”

AN AUTHENTIC VISION

Canadian entrepreneur Jamie Salter has spent his career at the forefront of consumer brand development, transforming names into empires and shaping the way companies connect with audiences worldwide. As the founder, chairman and CEO of Authentic Brands Group (ABG), he has created one of the most dynamic licensing and brand management firms in the world. Founded in New York City in 2010, ABG was born from Salter’s vision to acquire, revitalize and scale consumer brands across categories including fashion, entertainment, sports and lifestyle. Under his leadership, the company has built a portfolio of more than 50 brands, ranging from heritage fashion labels like Brooks Brothers and Hervé Léger, to athletic giants like Reebok, Prince and Champion and jewelry brands like Neil Lane. Salter’s ability to combine cultural relevance with strong business acumen has positioned ABG as a powerhouse in modern commerce. Beyond boardrooms and brand portfolios, Salter is, above all, a family man. He often emphasizes that his greatest success lies not in the billion-dollar deals he has closed, but in the time he spends with his wife, Sheryl, and four sons (Corey, Matthew, Tyler and Dylan). Family remains the guiding force in his life, shaping both his values and leadership style. With headquarters in Manhattan and partnerships spanning the globe, Salter continues to expand ABG’s influence.

AMERICAN VALUES

Entrepreneurship runs deep in the life of Jay Schottenstein, the Columbus, Ohio–based businessman whose leadership has shaped some of the most recognizable brands in retail. As chairman and CEO of Schottenstein Stores Corporation, American Eagle Outfitters and American Signature, and as executive chairman of Designer Brands, Schottenstein has spent decades at the forefront of American retail, blending tradition with innovation to drive growth across multiple industries. Raised in a family known for its entrepreneurial spirit, Schottenstein learned the importance of vision, discipline, and adaptability early on. Under his leadership, American Eagle Outfitters has grown into a global lifestyle brand, appealing to generations of customers with its focus on quality, authenticity, and cultural relevance. At the same time, he has guided American Signature, a leader in furniture retail, through expansions that emphasize value and design for modern families. His influence also extends into the world of footwear through Designer Brands where he has overseen strategies that strengthen customer engagement and broaden market presence. Schottenstein’s ability to balance innovation with operational excellence has made him a trusted leader across sectors. “A brand has to stay true to its core values,” says Schottenstein. “It must have consistency of what it stands for. It needs to have a clear mission statement to accomplish this. What made it special to start with? That history created certain values with customers, and the brand has to be true to those values. At the same time, a brand has to be innovative to remain relevant in an ever changing environment.”

BUILDING THE FUTURE

After leading the $1 billion expansion and renovation of the landmark Fontainebleau Miami Beach, the brand’s chairman and CEO, Jeffrey Soffer, brought a vertically integrated luxury hotel, gaming, entertainment and meeting destination to the Las Vegas Strip. The 67-story resort boasts 3,644 hotel rooms and suites, 550,000 square feet of meeting and convention space, 150,000 square feet of gaming and a collection of restaurants, shops, pools, nightlife and spa and wellness offerings. “Fontainebleau Las Vegas is the latest chapter in the Fontainebleau legacy that blurs the line between the glamour of the past and the luxury of the future,” says Soffer. As the newest resort to debut on the northern end of the Strip, Fontainebleau Las Vegas sits directly next to the Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall expansion, allowing meetings and convention guests seamless access from its dedicated

South Lobby to the convention hall. “Our hotel and amenities are all integrated around the unique and elegant podium-like shape of the resort, creating a seamless experience for guests in which they can easily access their desired destination.” Spanning more than 188,000 square feet throughout multiple locations at the resort, the restaurant and bar collection features chefs and restaurant partners like chefs Gabriela Cámara, Josh Capon and Evan Funke. “Certain design elements throughout Fontainebleau Las Vegas are a nod to the vision of Morris Lapidus, the iconic architect who designed Fontainebleau Miami Beach. An array of design partners, led by Fontainebleau Development’s EVP of design, John Rawlins, worked together to ensure each space pays tribute to the original Fontainebleau through architecture, color palette and its signature art deco motifs.”

SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS

Barry Sternlicht has built one of the world’s most influential investment firms—a global powerhouse spanning real estate, hospitality, energy infrastructure and beyond. Sternlicht also created W Hotels, grew St. Regis from a single property into a global luxury hotel collection, and transformed the industry by redefining and reviving brands like The Luxury Collection, Sheraton, Westin, Le Meridien and Four Points. Now, newly rebranded for its tenth anniversary, his Starwood Hotels is poised to bring his stamp to its luxury hotel brands including Baccarat Hotels & Resorts, 1 Hotels and Treehouse Hotels. “By reviving the Starwood Hotels name, we aim to marry this trusted legacy of youth, innovation and guest focus with our modern, tech-enabled, personalized approach to hospitality,” says Sternlicht, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Starwood Capital Group. “As we take this next step, we’re doubling down on our mission to inspire, innovate and make a difference—for our guests, our partners and the planet.” If the 1 Hotels brand—the wellnessdriven hospitality company currently shaking up the industry—has proven one thing, it’s that sustainability and luxury don’t have to be mutually exclusive. With a flagship hotel in New York City and more on the horizon, Baccarat Hotels & Resorts is an ultra-luxury hospitality brand that translates the 260-year heritage of the legendary French crystal maker into an elegant hotel experience. With a strong emphasis on and commitment to conscious consumption and sustainable materials, 1 Hotels properties are decorated with casual but decidedly luxe furnishings. At 1 Hotels, sustainability and nature meet pure luxury. Treehouse (with locations in London, Manchester and Silicon Valley) has a fun, bohemian vibe. 1 Hotels properties in the U.S. are booming (South Beach, New York City, Austin, West Hollywood, Nashville, San Francisco to name a few). The brand is in expansion mode with 30 hotel openings planned in the next five years.

Architect Thomas Kligerman celebrates the magic of summer, exploring the seaside setting and design of homes facing the Atlantic along the Rhode Island coast

Summer by the Sea: Cottages from Watch Hill to Little Compton (Monacelli) is the first book to focus on the seaside cottages of Rhode Island, the birthplace of the shingle style. Each chapter explores a different town: Watch Hill, Weekapaug, Haversham, Block Island, Saunderstown, Jamestown, Middletown and Little Compton. Showcased are works by 19th-century masters Calvert Vaux and Charles L. Bevins, new houses by Jens Risom, Gil Schafer and Peter Bohlin, and vernacular cottages by unknown builders that have descended through generations of the same family. GONTEN

Set in the less touristed Appenzell region, the 30-room Huus Quell is nestled between Lake Constance and the Alpstein mountains, where rolling green hills, artisanal cheeses and beer and yodeling traditions remain constant. The resort is the passion project of local Jan Schoch, who sought to create a serene Alpine oasis from Swiss moon timber, local larch and lime plaster, with woolens and textiles sourced from the surrounding communities. Geothermal wells and solar arrays power the health-focused retreat that is centered around the state-of-the-art spa and the L3 Long Lasting Lifestyle Circle—a longevity program that incorporates cryotherapy, oxygen therapy, infrared techniques and more. Stunning design is found in Restaurant Quell, where local dishes like tagliarini with truffle meet shared casual dim sum dishes and botanically inspired drinks. appenzellerhuus.ch

Elizabeth Banks may be downsized but she’s never diminished; a beautiful ground-up build in Sonoma; fashion’s fresh start; and Kit Kemp’s new book

Designing

A NEW BOOK EXPLORES KIT KEMP’S IMAGINATIVE INTERIORS

Known for her distinctive design style that effortlessly combines vibrant colors and eclectic patterns, Kit Kemp is an internationally acclaimed British interior designer and author. She is the founder and creative force behind Kit Kemp Design Studio and the awardwinning Firmdale Hotels, which she established with her husband, Tim, in 1985, and which includes 11 properties across London and New York City. With her unapologetic use of color, exquisite layering of pattern and an eye for the unexpected, Kemp has rewritten the rules of contemporary interior design. Kit Kemp: Design Stories (Rizzoli) invites readers into her imaginative

world, revealing how she transforms interiors into richly woven stories of texture, craft and individuality. Kemp’s spaces are more than just rooms—they are experiences, each one a vibrant tapestry of art, antiques and bespoke details that surprise and delight. Her signature aesthetic is a masterful blend of craft and sophistication, where embroidered headboards meet hand-painted wallpapers, ikat-covered cushions blend with 20th-century art and every corner holds a moment of magic. Whether drawn to playful patterns, soulful craftsmanship or the art of storytelling through interiors, this book will inspire readers to make every space as individual as those who inhabit them.

“I NEVER LIKED THE IDEA OF BRANDS, SO EVERY HOTEL HAS TO SPEAK FOR ITSELF; IT HAS TO BE INDIVIDUAL… EVERY BUILDING HAS ITS OWN SIGNATURE.” –KIT KEMP

IN REAL LIFE, ELIZABETH BANKS IS MORE FORCE OF NATURE THAN SHRINKING VIOLET.

She’s an actress with huge franchises to her name, including The Hunger Games and Pitch Perfec t. She’s in the small but exclusive club of actors who are also successful directors. The last feature she directed, Cocaine Bear, grossed over $90 million on a production budget one-third that size. She’s a prolific film and television producer, about to go to SXSW with a new passion project. And she’s a wine entrepreneur.

So, it might be something of an inside Hollywood joke that her latest character, in The Miniature Wife , which premieres on Peacock in early April, is a Pulitzer Prize–winning writer who is accidentally, well, downsized to six inches tall.

Based on a short story by Manuel Gonzales, 52-year-old Banks plays Lindy Littlejohn, a successful novelist and Washington University creative writing professor who’s hoping to have a bit of a relationship renaissance with her self-absorbed scientist/entrepreneur husband, Les (Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen). But Les is aiming for a financial windfall thanks to his developments in miniaturization.

Anyone who’s seen Honey, I Shrunk the Kids can guess what happens next.

“I loved the idea from the jump,” says Banks, speaking from her home in Los Angeles. “It’s a relationship study. It’s about the power dynamic of a couple. It’s about a woman who lives in a world that’s not made for her. It has this absurdist lens. It’s certainly a metaphor for feeling small in the world. As women, all of our hopes and dreams and desires are always being minimized. We’re so often made to feel small.”

The Miniature Wife creators Jennifer Ames and Steve Turner, who previously worked on Goliath and Boardwalk Empire , among other shows, insist that Banks was their first choice to play the role.

“She has this ability to move seamlessly from the most ridiculous physical comedy of battling a giant fly to the raw vulnerability of giving her daughter, with whom she has a strained relationship, a nose hug—all while being six inches tall,” they say. “She’s such a gifted physical comedian. Her comedic timing is brilliant.”

SHE’S SUCH A GIFTED PHYSICAL COMEDIAN.

HER COMEDIC TIMING IS BRILLIANT.

Comparisons to Lily Tomlin in the 1981 camp classic The Incredible Shrinking Woman are inevitable.

To play Lindy’s sometimes bumbling, sometimes narcissistic, sometimes caring husband, Banks waited for Macfadyen to become available. “I was really looking for someone who matched the tone, and he just really checked every box,” Banks says. “We didn’t offer it to anyone else, and he’s such a delight.”

“Acting together was just a blast,” says Macfadyen. “She’s super smart, super funny, with a real emotional heft. It was a joy to navigate the insanity of Les and Lindy’s relationship over these 10 episodes.”

Banks, who grew up the eldest of four kids in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, did not expect how hard playing the role would be.

“My husband [producer Max Handelman] says I was the least mentally prepared for this job than any job in my entire career,” Banks says. She, Macfadyen and the rest of the cast spent a lot of time reading the scripts out loud and getting to know their characters.

“You just imagine you’re going to be making the scenes with that person,” she says of her many moments with Macfadyen on paper. But when it came to actually shooting the show, 70 percent of it involved green screen work alone, pretending to be half a foot tall.

Banks had worked with green screens before, notably when she played the villain Rita Repulsa in the Power Rangers reboot in 2017. “But there were a lot of practical effects. They dressed me up and attached me to wires, and they’d fly me around,” she says.

Macfadyen would be off reading lines into a microphone, and “I’m in a coffee mug in front of a green screen making eye contact with a ball on a stick,” Banks recalls. “I felt very vulnerable sitting alone with nothing around me, having to create the entire reality at all times.”

Still, Banks made everything fun, say Ames and Turner. “Elizabeth committed to every ridiculous bit. One of our favorites is Lindy burning down the dollhouse. Elizabeth rode around on the green screen set on an electric scooter covered in ash and laughing maniacally. She really went for it that day, and it was a sight to behold.”

I’VE BEEN COLLECTING

A

PAYCHECK SINCE I WAS 12.
I LIVED IN A SMALL TOWN AND WANTED A BIG LIFE.

“I think it’s fun and funny, and I want people to think about the dynamics in their own families. What does ambition and selfishness look like in the modern world?” Banks says of what she’d like audiences to take away from The Miniature Wife

The goal, she adds, was to create something “that feels oddly relatable, but also like nothing else on television.”

As a producer, actor and director in a changing Hollywood landscape, Banks thinks it’s more and more important to do that. “It’s really all about how to be as fresh and entertaining as possible,” she explains. “How do you tap into things that are in the zeitgeist, and how do you make old things feel fun and new?”

Part of that involves keeping tabs on what her two teenage sons, Magnus and Felix, enjoy. “They’re not watching Euphoria , and they’re not allowed to be very online,” she says. “But we love to watch shows together.” Among them: Only Murders in the Building, The Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park. “Teenage boys love that stuff.”

At the same time, it’s interesting to Banks that “old stuff is new again.” Her kids are watching The Office and Reno 911!, while she’s constantly approached by young fans who’ve just seen her in The Hunger Games, even though the first film in which she played creepy stylist Effie Trinket was almost 15 years ago.

“I’ve so moved on, but what a gift,” Banks says of the blockbuster series. “Effie is still alive and well.”

The truth of the matter, Banks says, with a dash of humor, is that “I’m in a bunch of iconic movies, man.” There’s The Hunger Games. There’s Pitch Perfect. There’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin . “You always set out for icon status,” she jokes. “Why try to be anything else less than?”

But how do you reach iconic movie status? Is there a formula? Banks thinks so. “You give audiences something that’s a little bit safe and then you go transgressive, a little bit messy and dangerous,” she says. “I think that’s where it happens.”

Whenever she considers a new project, she says, “I definitely make a box and say, ‘Are we checking icon status?’ You don’t always get there. It’s not the fault of the material. A lot of movies are made by a committee.”

For instance, the first time she heard the pitch for Bottoms, a teen comedy she produced starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri, “I knew it was going to have a voice. It’s about young people figuring out their life and how to get laid. That’s iconic.” Banks will probably direct another movie next summer, “by the time my life and the scripts and the casting and the prep line up,” she says. But she tries to space things out, she explains. Making all 10 episodes of Miniature Wife involved spending six and a half months in Toronto, “and I’m also raising two kids, and I want to be home and with the family.”

She tries to be outside as often as possible. She loves to ski. “It’s six, seven, eight hours of moving your body—there’s nothing better,” she says. And though she loves Los Angeles, she misses the snow in Massachusetts. “I always say there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear. Get the right snow pants and get out there.”

She’s also trying to change the way we sip our pinot as the coowner and chief creative officer of Archer Roose Wines, a luxury canned wine company. It’s all about storytelling, she says. “And drinking your way to a better planet,” Banks adds.

Whether she’s 15 centimeters tall onscreen or 5-foot-5 off it, Banks’ goal these days is disrupting the system. “That word didn’t exist when I was growing up,” she says. “But even then I was an ambitious go-getter. I’ve been collecting a paycheck since I was 12. I lived in a small town and wanted a big life.”

Mission accomplished.

“We live in an incredible time,” Banks says. “And if you’re a woman who does things, you’re disruptive. But you know what? It’s really fun.” ■

to wildfires within three years, a Sonoma County family brought deep emotional significance to a new ground-up project. “With a large, multigenerational family with 10 grandchildren, the goal was to create a home that feels effortless yet elevated, stress-free and genuinely welcoming to everyone, from the eldest grandchildren to the youngest,” says Bay Area interior designer Kimberly Oxford. The home was built with generous ceiling heights and a strong relationship to the surrounding landscape.

“The intention was to create a home rooted in family rather than possessions, a place where history could be rebuilt through shared experiences,” says Oxford. “The home balances warmth and structure, prioritizing natural materials, softened forms and a sense of ease that allows the architecture and surrounding landscape to take the lead.” The palette is composed of warm neutrals, softened whites and earth-toned accents that echo the surrounding landscape. Flooring includes natural wood, hand-painted terra-cotta and stone, chosen for durability and the ability to age gracefully. “Every decision needed to support the whole, requiring careful editing and restraint,” says Oxford. “We aimed for a modern, quiet luxury sensibility that feels timeless rather than trend-driven.” ■

The custom dining table by Antonia establishes the room’s axis and scale, immediately signaling that this is a space designed for gathering rather than display. Its low, horizontal profile keeps sightlines open to the exterior, allowing the antique French limestone wall to act almost as a backdrop rather than a focal distraction.

The Peninsula Beverly Hills has unveiled newly designed guestrooms and a refresh of its expansive rooftop for the property’s 35th anniversary this year. The hotel partnered with interior design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates on the modern upgrade to its 195 guestrooms with a variety of thoughtful new details, including adjusted layouts to maximize natural light, new accent pieces and a color palette of soft pinks, powder blues and muted greens for a tranquil, residential feel. The property also introduced a new layout to its rooftop pool deck, which now has 10 larger cabanas accented with the Peninsula’s signature yellow-andwhite stripes. “This refurbishment involves more than introducing modern updates,” says the hotel’s longtime managing director, Offer Nissenbaum. “It’s a continuation of a legacy and an embodiment of the care and artistry that have defined The Peninsula Beverly Hills since its inception.” The hotel considered beauty and function when refreshing each room’s furnishings with new desks, marble quartz surfaces and French-inspired upholstery. To enhance the overall space, every room’s layout was adjusted to maximize natural light and improve flow. Decorative accent pieces such as porcelain vases, gold-framed mirrors and soft metallic sconces were added to underscore the property’s charm and feminine character. At Max & Helen’s, hour-long lines and crowds wrap around the block, and the guest list has seen the likes of Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Steven Spielberg, Jane Fonda and Justin and Hailey Bieber. Creative director Lily Rosenthal Royal and chef and director of operations Mason Royal are the powerhouse newlyweds running the diner’s day-to-day. Dermatologist Dr. Amy Wechsler and her daughter Zoe Wechsler have officially opened Spotless on the Upper East Side, New York City’s walk-in, acne-only clinic rewriting the rules of dermatology in real time. Acne affects around 50 million people in the United States each year. It is one of TikTok’s most-searched skin concerns, with more than $1.5 billion spent annually on treatments that often fail to deliver lasting results. Spotless seeks to eliminate the trial-and-error cycle of products, influencers and home remedies, meeting people at every stage of their skin journey. Spotless offers same-day, medical-grade treatments—from pimple shots to acne peels and extractions—by nurse practitioners trained by Dr. Wechsler. Spotless was born from the shared mission of mother-daughter duo Amy and Zoe to reimagine acne care, offering walk-in treatments such as pimple shots, extractions and chemical peels in a modern, approachable setting designed for real life. spotlessclinics.com

Lore Bathing Club in NoHo is a new wellness space rooted in the rich heritage of bathing culture reimagined for contemporary life by entrepreneurs James O’Reilly (NeueHouse and Life Time) and Adam Elzer (Everyday Hospitality). Lore boasts 6,200 square feet over two floors and showcases saunas (infrared and dry heat) and a cold pool. Embracing the intensity of the heat and the discomfort of the cold is a deeply primal experience. “While it’s been around for millennia, science now confirms what tradition always knew: regular sauna and cold water immersion sessions enrich health,” says O’Reilly. “The key isn’t longer sessions but greater frequency.” This insight inspired Lore, a neighborhood bathing club designed for those committed to a regular practice. The interiors are intentionally designed to guide the body through a sensory journey of bathing via a carefully sequenced palette of materials and textures like travertine, textured floors, alder wood and deep chocolate tones mirroring the body’s movement between hot and cold. lorebathingclub.com

Le Bilboquet Market , situated around the corner from its sister restaurant, is the vision of the brand’s founder, Philippe Delgrange, who spent years scouting for the ideal location. “We are creating a true European gourmet experience where one comes in for their morning espresso, orders lunch for the office and—after a long day—picks up a gourmet prepared dinner to enjoy at home,” says Delgrange, who tapped his friend, James Beard–award-winning chef François Payard, for the role of culinary director. Le Bilboquet Market caters to the breakfast, lunch and dinner crowd, with many grab-and-go options that include freshly made salads, savory quiches, an assortment of artisan sandwiches and a full coffee bar. There are, of course, also a variety of decadent French pastries (éclairs, napoleons, palmiers) and cakes. The market also sells charcuterie meats, cheeses, caviar, an assortment of olive oils and vinegars and coffee. Delgrange engaged Parisian designer Maud Ferrand (of New York–based Maud Interiors) on the design, which showcases Viola marble, colorful Italian tiles, cerused oak cabinetry, bronze palm trees and terrazzo floors. lebilboquetmarket.com

Tutto Mare, a Mediterranean concept from the Tutto il Giorno restaurant group (Gianpaolo de Felice and Gabby Karan de Felice), has opened on the intracoastal at The Royal Poinciana Plaza. “When we began imagining the rebirth of the historic Playhouse restaurant, we knew it deserved a concept as exceptional and unique as its setting, something unlike anything else in the world but which people would see as their new home away from home,” says Samantha David, president of WS Development. “The task was not easy, but Gabby and Gianpaolo, as they say, understood the assignment.” Born from a shared dream of creating a seaside outdoor dining experience reminiscent of Gianpaolo’s upbringing in southern Italy, the Tutto il Giorno group has grown to include locations in Southampton, East Hampton and Sag Harbor, New York. When Gianpaolo envisioned expanding to Palm Beach and discovered the historic Royal Poinciana Playhouse, he knew it was the perfect home for the newest extension of the family. The 200-seat dining room, bar, terrace and private dining spaces are under the culinary direction of executive chef Agostino Petrosino and chef de cuisine Carmine Nozzolino with signature dishes such as branzino acqua pazza, fritto misto, insalata di mare and paccheri con frutti di mare. The spaces are designed by Karan de Felice and Donna Karan in collaboration with Dominic Kozerski and Enrico Bonetti of Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture. tuttoilgiorno.com

Inspiration for Maria Isabel, a 50-seat contemporary Mexican restaurant by chef-owners Sayat and Laura Ozyilmaz (Dalida) in Presidio Heights, came from two of Laura’s family members. “The name combines my mom, Isabel, and my sister, Maria,” says the Top Chef alum. “As a Mexican female chef, honoring them matters. My sister is a chef in Mexico City, and my family is far from San Francisco, so naming the restaurant after them is my way of keeping them close, even when we’re not in the same place.”

Borrowing from flavors and traditions from her upbringing—and influences from her mother’s family in Guerrero and her father’s ties to Sinaloa and Jalisco—menu selections are nostalgic and personal, from chicken Milanesa stuffed with queso fresco and smoky poblano to pulpo enamorado, inspired by a dish she grew up eating in Acapulco. “What we’re creating here is a bridge between the Pacific coast of Mexico and the Pacific coast of California,” she adds of the space designed by Jenne Wicht of Jak W. “We’re taking the techniques, chiles, salsas, seafood, masa traditions and familystyle cooking that shaped me, and expressing them through the incredible produce and seasonal ingredients available here.” mariaisabelsf.com

For the second standalone location of Flour + Water Pizza Shop, led by co-founders and chefs Thomas McNaughton and Ryan Pollnow of Flour + Water Hospitality Group, careful deliberation went into finding the spot in Oakland. “We were very intentional about waiting for the right location and immediately felt drawn to The Lark Uptown because of the strong sense of community in the area,” says McNaughton. “With so many of our longtime team members and collaborators based in the East Bay, it’s immensely gratifying to finally be serving this neighborhood that is home for so many of our colleagues and friends.” The space is lined with recycled brick tile from Fireclay Tile, an abstract dough mural by San Francisco–based artist Nicole Hayden and two pizza box wall displays in racks fabricated by local firm Reunion Creative. The kitchen serves up a dozen 13-inch pies, such as The Conrad with taleggio, mushrooms and kale (one of McNaughton’s personal favorites) along with location-specific offerings like dry-fried chicken wings served with a special green dipping sauce. “It’s not just about serving great pizza,” says McNaughton. “Pizza is our conduit for connection and service to others. The space was designed with that in mind, so when guests walk in, they immediately feel part of that energy. Pizza is such a social food, and we love how it brings people together. Even when someone is popping in solo for a big slice at the counter, they can feel connected with our team and everyone in the restaurant.” fwpizzashop.com

Lauded gallerist Serge Sorokko has unveiled Serge Sorokko Gallery along with his wife and co-owner, Tatiana Sorokko, in Downtown Napa. The soft, warm white space—a larger offshoot of its sister gallery, opened in 2023 and located two blocks away—was designed by California- and Hawaii-based architect Craig Steely and showcases exhibitions and rotating installations from more than 30 celebrated artists, such as Isabelle de Borchgrave, Hunt Slonem, Miguel Condé and Yuri Kuper. “Roughly 95 percent of what we present is museum-caliber—artists with established institutional recognition and works that have been exhibited in museums, are held in museum collections or clearly belong in that context,” says Sorokko. “Whether someone comes in because they love art, they are visiting wine country or simply walking by, the goal is the same: a memorable encounter with art that stays with you long after you leave.” s orokko.com

WINE COUNTRY NEWS

At the newly revamped Hotel Yountville Resort & Spa, experience wine country’s iteration on bucolic Italy. The 80-room, pet-friendly property, designed by Dallas-based firm Premier (Bardessono Hotel & Spa, The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe), features two on-site eateries, a spa and an outdoor, cypress-tree lined swimming pool for guest use only. Light, airy rooms and suites (some with vaulted ceilings and private outdoor patios) are fashioned with crisp, white fieldstone fireplaces, wooden floors and artwork inspired by the nearby landscape. “The redesign was about refining who we are rather than trying to reinvent the property,” says general manager Stephanie Burdette. “Hotel Yountville has always had a sense of warmth and an easy connection to nature, inspired by the Italian countryside, and that foundation felt important to preserve. With the guestrooms, the focus was on honoring that original character while updating the spaces to feel a bit more current and comfortable. The inspiration came from a modern Italian villa—simple, understated and grounded in natural materials that create a sense of calm.” hotelyountville.com

Situated just a block from bustling Healdsburg Avenue, newcomer Duchamp Healdsburg feels like your own private, luxe hideaway, complete with five-star service and amenities. “What truly sets us apart is that we’ve eliminated the traditional hotel experience entirely—no hallways, no typical check-in desk, no parking hassles,” says V.P. of operations Tom Nelson. “Instead, guests enjoy private entrances to their suites, the only free on-property hotel parking lot downtown complete with complimentary eclectic vehicle charging stations, and a warm welcome with complimentary wine, beer or a cocktail. What I love most is that we’ve essentially created four distinct experiences within one property—it’s truly like four hotels on a single footprint.” Suites at the 20-room property span poolside suites with private patios with direct views of the 50-foot outdoor pool to Grove suites in a garden enclave near the main lobby, and are outfitted with canopy beds, Smeg refrigerators, Nespresso machines, Polaroid cameras and locally made hand-crafted pottery by Hayes Ceramics. “We’re not trying to be the biggest or flashiest property in Wine Country,” adds Nelson. “We’re focused on being the most thoughtfully designed for guests who appreciate privacy, beauty and genuine connection to people and place.” duchamphotel.com

The Cottages at Little Saint are a reconceived collection of four private cottages masterminded by husband-and-wife duo Jeff and Laurie Ubben, founders of plant-based restaurant, café, wine bar and events space Little Saint in Downtown Healdsburg. The residences evoke the creative energy of Laurel Canyon in the late 1960s and 1970s thanks to San Francisco interior design genius Ken Fulk (Little Saint, Commodore Perry Estate, Goodtime Hotel). “We noticed guests looking for deeper, more meaningful experiences when booking travel, and The Cottages were a natural progression for us to extend our mission beyond food and beverage,” explains Laurie of the property situated just a two-minute walk from the restaurant complete with a heated outdoor swimming pool and manicured walking paths. “From vintage-inspired wallpaper and hand-painted floors to custom patchwork furniture, Ken’s team brought a sense of whimsy to life in every detail. To complete the experience, each cottage features its own record player and a thoughtfully curated vinyl collection that reflects the story and spirit of the room.” cottagesatlittlesaint.com

BELLE de JOUR

The French maison’s new Belle Dior Haute Joaillerie collection is inspired by the beauty of gardens and the magic of couture

For Dior’s latest Haute Joaillerie collection, the maison’s jewelry artistic director, Victoire de Castellane, dreamt up Belle Dior, a celebration of femininity, the beauty of gardens and the magic of couture, combining dream and reality with elegant fringing. With 57 pieces, Belle Dior evokes fantastical landscapes imbued with poetry. Braids, emblematic of de Castellane’s jewellery, are boldly reinterpreted; in a romantic spirit, they are turned into precious pendants that sway gracefully and initiate delightful vertical movements, recalling by turns the dance of celestial bodies, the fabrics of Christian Dior’s ballgowns or the motion of a flowering stem. These elements trace the contours of a weightless flora where gold, diamonds and gemstones are united to bring a marvelous symphony to life. A refined tale celebrating majestic blooms, reimagined with a profusion of colored gems. At the heart of this magical odyssey, the Jardins Multicolores are reborn in unprecedented shades of bright green and powder pink. This Franges de Fleurs necklace features fringes that evoke delicate foliage, complemented by fresh and delicate gem-set flowers. Stems, flowers and leaves cascade around the central emerald on the necklace, ring and earrings, echoing Dior’s floral haute couture creations, in which nature delicately embraces the body of the wearer.
