Dear Duchesne Friends and Families, This Report of Appreciation is our chance to express with pictures, words, and even pie charts, our sincere gratitude to the generous community that makes the work of the faculty, staff, and administration possible. Your support allows each student at Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart to flourish in a community whose resources are allocated to support each Goal and its Criteria as directed in the Foundational Principles for Sacred Heart Schools.

We will continue to educate to new frontiers as we brave uncharted waters in the name of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne. We consider ourselves lucky to have you as the wind in our sails and privileged to continue the legacy of the Sacred Heart here in Houston. From our hearts to yours, thank you!

2025-2026 was a record year for Duchesne in too many ways to count. In an historic campaign with unprecedented momentum, we raised the capital needed to acquire the property we have always prayed for. We pioneered this accomplishment while maintaining and advancing a top-notch education for girls of all ages. It is your participation in the Duchesne Fund, Sporting Clays, and Welcome to the Jungle Extravaganza that made our success possible. 2

The valedictorian is the graduating student who has achieved the highest cumulative grade point average at the end of the sixth MOD of her senior year. The valedictorian is selected to present a farewell address at graduation.

The salutatorian is the graduating student who has achieved the second-highest cumulative grade point average at the end of the sixth MOD of her senior year. The salutatorian is selected to lead a prayer at graduation.

Alexandria Feit, True Child of the Sacred Heart University of Tennessee, Knoxville The recipient of the True Child of the Sacred Heart award is recognized by her school community as the individual who has come to a deep understanding of how to live the love of the Heart of Jesus at this stage of her life. The entire Upper School student body, faculty, and staff vote to select the True Child of the Sacred Heart. While the origin and beginning date of the award is unknown, all Network of the Sacred Heart Schools have this recognition in some form today.

Commencement Address Dr. Andrea VON STERNBERG Shurley ’90

Dr. Andrea von Sternberg Shurley, a proud member of Duchesne’s Class of 1990, serves as President of Ursuline Academy of Dallas, where she leads the school’s strategic vision and fosters an environment in which young women grow into confident, purpose-driven leaders. Previously, she spent a decade as Ursuline’s Principal, where she cultivated a supportive academic community grounded in connection and care. During her tenure, she strengthened relationships among faculty and students, expanded extracurricular opportunities, and advanced a culture in which every student is equipped to thrive. Before joining Ursuline, Dr. Shurley spent eleven impactful years in teaching and administration with the Schools of the Sacred Heart in San Francisco, California, including a transformative tenure as Head of School at Convent of the Sacred Heart High School. Prior to her work in education, she built a successful technology career first in Austin and then in Silicon Valley. Dr. Shurley holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Arts in English from Texas State University–San Marcos, and a Doctor of Education in Catholic Educational Leadership from the University of San Francisco. She and her husband, Christopher, are the proud parents of two sons, Knox and Gibson.

An excerpt from Dr. Shurley’s commencement address to the Class of 2026: “Whether you started your Duchesne days in Lower School or joined the ranks of Sacred Heart in Upper School, the gifts of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat and St. Rose Philippine Duchesne have soaked into your DNA; they are in your bones and will always impact the way you walk through the world. You will carry this place with you, and others you meet will recognize it in you. You are entering the world with a strong foundation, and that leads me to a few thoughts I hope you will carry with you as you begin this next chapter.

First: Think.

You leave today with more than a diploma; you leave with a disciplined and capable mind. Use it well. Your education has given you the enduring ability to learn – an ability that will guide you long after today. You must also cultivate discernment. Listen to those who have walked before you – your parents, your teachers, your mentors. Not every opportunity deserves your trust, and not every voice deserves your attention. If something does not merit thoughtful consideration, it does not merit action. Learn to trust the quiet clarity of your own judgment, formed in truth.

Next: Step beyond your comfort.

Growth rarely occurs in ease or certainty. There will be moments when you find yourself unsure, even overwhelmed. Do not retreat. Instead, rise to meet what is before you. 4

You will come to understand that you are not meant to navigate life alone. Ask for help. Seek guidance. The people around you carry a deep desire to contribute to something greater than themselves – allow them to walk with you. Often, what first appears uncertain becomes, in time, a source of profound growth. Think about the beginning of senior year, how much uncertainty there likely was for you, and now many of those wonderings have been answered, and new ones are forming. That is exactly what should be happening!

Third: Commit.

A meaningful life asks something of us. At some point, each of you will confront a fundamental question: what do I believe in, and to what will I give my life? Faith invites us to recognize that we are not the center of all meaning – that there is something greater, enduring, and true. Responding to that invitation requires trust. It requires humility. It asks us to surrender control and to live in relationship – with God and with one another. Every meaningful relationship depends upon this willingness to commit. It is not a limitation; it is what gives life depth, stability, and purpose.

Finally: Love.

It may sound simple, but it is essential. Love is at the core of your educational experience here! To love is to recognize that life is not about oneself. Love is not dramatic or performative. It is built, day by day, in small and faithful acts of care. It is found in attentiveness, in generosity, in the quiet decision to place another’s needs beside and sometimes before your own.Celebrate the gifts you see in others. Learn from them. When you center your life on others in this way, your perspective changes. And over time, it is these relationships – these acts of love – that will endure. Not achievements or possessions, but the ways you have given and received love. As you graduate today, I wish for you that you always seek to nurture your faith, feed your intellect, serve generously, build and sustain relationships, and tend to your own growth with care and attention. Class of 2026, the world needs your intelligence, leadership, compassion, and joy. May you go forward with courage and confidence and remain open to where God leads you.

Lower School

Lower School provided students with meaningful opportunities to explore their interests, strengthen relationships, and develop a lifelong love of learning. Passion Projects encouraged creativity and student voice through hands-on experiences in fashion design, boat-building STEM, watercolor art, Charger News, Kindness Club, and more. Collaboration flourished across grade levels through reading buddies, Grade 4 mentorship of Kindergarten insect research projects, and Grade 3 and Pre-K4 partnership of the 101 Day Dalmatians service project. Students also benefited from enriching opportunities, including geology and cardiology presentations from parent experts, a virtual field trip to Saguaro National Park with a National Park Ranger, and integrated art projects that connected learning across disciplines. Throughout the year, service remained at the heart of the Lower School experience through initiatives such as the Sr. Karam Book Drive, reading visits to Pegasus Senior Living, support for Casa de Esperanza and Star of Hope Mission, and environmental stewardship through the Eco-Queens program. Together, these experiences helped students grow as confident learners, compassionate leaders, and joyful members of the Duchesne community.

THE MARIAN COURT The Marian Court is comprised of a selected student from each homeroom, in addition to a Crown Bearer (Grade 2), a Gospel reader (Grade 3), and a Crowner of Mary (Grade 4). These students display the virtues of Mary throughout the school year—obedience, perseverance, gratitude, prayerfulness, and humility—and consistently exhibit positive and respectful classroom behavior. Middle School

Middle School continued to strengthen the academic experience through expanded student support, intentional skill development, and programs designed to help every student thrive. Learning Lab and Math Lab services were expanded to provide additional individualized support, while dedicated testing spaces created an environment that promotes focus and student success. A renewed emphasis on writing across the curriculum encouraged students to think critically, communicate clearly, and deepen their understanding in every subject area. Grade 5 students also benefited from the introduction of the Level Up rotation, a program designed to navigate the transition from Lower School by building confidence and establishing a strong foundation for success in Middle School. With the right balance of challenge and support, students were prepared to approach the next stage of their education with greater confidence, independence, and skill.

ST. PHILIPPINE DUCHESNE AWARD This award is given to a student in Grade 8 who has been generous in her gift of self and positive in her attitude and influence on others. Her loving concern for others has been a genuine and joyful witness to the love that Christ has for each of us. Claire Brassil ST. MADELEINE SOPHIE BARAT SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is awarded to two Grade 8 students who have attended Duchesne Middle School for at least three years, are returning for Upper School, and consistently exemplify the Goals and Criteria of a Sacred Heart education. Upper School

Upper School celebrated a year of exceptional achievement, student leadership, and meaningful engagement both inside and outside the classroom. Students distinguished themselves in academic competition, with the Mock Trial team advancing to the state competition and the French program earning a sixth-place finish among

33 schools at the Texas French Symposium. More than 50 student-led clubs provided opportunities to pursue shared interests, develop leadership skills, and inspire service within the school community and beyond. A reinvigorated social awareness curriculum guided all Grade 9 and 10 students through foundational service-learning experiences, preparing them for the transformative off-campus programs and research opportunities that await in their junior and senior years. Students also proudly represented Duchesne off campus, joining the St. Thomas High School Choir to perform the National Anthem at an Astros game. From the classroom to the larger Houston community, students embraced opportunities to lead, serve, compete, and make their mark.

Athletics

Duchesne Athletics continued to foster a culture of excellence, teamwork, and Charger pride through outstanding competitive achievements and meaningful opportunities for student-athletes. Duchesne celebrated success across multiple sports, including Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) runner-up in Swimming, Houston Junior Preparatory Conference (HJPC) champion in 8th Grade Basketball, and HJPC runner-up in Middle School Golf and 8th Grade Soccer. Eight student-athletes committed to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level, reflecting years of dedication both on and off the field. The Middle School Flag Football program launched its inaugural season, expanding opportunities for students to compete and grow as teammates. Duchesne also hosted Sacred Heart schools from across the country at the Sacred Heart Network Volleyball Tournament, while the varsity soccer team traveled to Miami to compete against Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart. Through competition, camaraderie, and perseverance, Duchesne student-athletes continued to grow not only as competitors but also as leaders and teammates.

Fine Arts

Duchesne Fine Arts continued to inspire creativity, artistic excellence, and confident self-expression across every division. Theater productions welcomed record audiences for Middle and Upper School non-musical performances, supported by the talented Cam-Techs, whose student leadership in design and technical production remains the foundation of every show. This year, the theater also enhanced its technical capabilities through updates to sound and lighting systems and an overhaul of the catwalk, creating expanded opportunities for students to learn and perform in a professional environment. Music students excelled in competition, with 33 students participating in the Texas Private School Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Competition and 12 advancing to the state level. Lower School continued their tradition of standing-room-only Christmas productions while sharing music with the broader Houston community. In Visual Arts, new, state-of-the-art kilns expanded opportunities for ceramics students, and the on-site Jones Gallery showcased rotating exhibitions of exceptional student work throughout the year. Dance also expanded its performance offerings with a new Middle School showcase featuring student choreography alongside the Upper School’s signature spring production. The arts continue to be an essential part of the Duchesne experience, giving students the confidence to share their talents, the freedom to explore their creativity, and the opportunity to inspire others.

A SHARED DREAM. A DECISIVE MOMENT. SECURING DUCHESNE’S FUTURE ON MEMORIAL DRIVE. “It is the direction of the intention which gives us unity. Direction of intention is the greatest power in our life. We are what our intentions are.” – Janet Erskine Stuart, RSCJ The 2025–2026 school year marked a historic chapter for Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart as the You Hold the Key Capital Campaign transformed a long-held vision into reality. For generations, the Duchesne community had dreamed of expanding the school’s physical footprint beyond its 12-acre campus. This year, that dream became possible with the acquisition of the 8-acre Memorial Creole Apartments property adjacent to campus, bringing Duchesne’s total campus footprint to 20 acres. This transformational acquisition secures Duchesne’s presence on Memorial Drive and creates extraordinary possibilities for students today and for generations to come. The support from the Duchesne community has been equally remarkable. In less than six months following the campaign’s launch, Duchesne secured more than $21 million in gifts and pledges from current and former families, alumnae, grandparents, RSCJs, trustees, and friends of Duchesne. By May 2026, the campaign had surpassed $26.4 million, as of September 17, 2026, commitments have exceeded $28 million. This extraordinary momentum reflects the community’s shared belief in Duchesne’s Sacred Heart mission and its confidence in the school’s future.

A Heart of Generosity Donors Since 1979, generous individuals and foundations have made extraordinary, endowed gifts to Duchesne to ensure that many more young women have access to a Sacred Heart education and to support the professional development of Duchesne’s faculty. Duchesne is what it is today thanks to the generosity and commitment of those who have given so much to our school community in years past. We stand on their shoulders as we look to the future, knowing that their legacy lives on in everything we do. The following funds have been endowed through their generosity. Sister Ann Caire Alumnae Scholarship Endowment

In 1995, the Alumnae Association honored longtime Duchesne leader Sister Ann Caire by naming their scholarship fund in her honor. Sister Caire served the Duchesne community since the school was founded in 1960, first as the founding Head of School, and then as Head of the Middle School from 2001 until 2009. Sister Caire retired from Duchesne’s administration but continued to faithfully serve the school in the Advancement Department until 2024. Although retired and living in California, Sister Caire continues to share her love of Duchesne through daily prayer for our community. Sister Jan Dunn Scholarship Endowment

Sister Jan Dunn has devoted her life to education and enriching the lives of students. She taught English and was later Dean of Students for 15 years at Duchesne, Grand Coteau, and New Orleans. She was also Headmistress at Duchesne Academy in Omaha for six years. Sister Dunn was Duchesne’s 6th Headmistress, serving from 1996 until her retirement in 2012. During her tenure, Sister Dunn ushered in the 1:1 laptop program, led the successful Reaching Up, Branching Out Capital Campaign, and worked to instill the Goals and Criteria of the Sacred Heart in the young women of Duchesne. “I want each girl to be a child of the Sacred Heart – to know what that means personally to her and to live that vision.” This tuition assistance fund was established as a part of the Reaching Up, Branching Out Capital Campaign to honor Sister Dunn’s faithful service. At Sister Dunn’s request, the Sister Dunn Endowment Fund is to be awarded to two Upper School girls each year who demonstrate a strong aptitude for writing. Sister Sharon Karam Scholarship Endowment

This scholarship endowment fund was established in 2023 through the generosity of our alumnae community during the Alumnae Annual Days of Giving campaign. The scholarship will be used to support need-based tuition for a student in the Upper School who, in the spirit of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, is committed to Social Awareness activities as outlined in Sacred Heart Goal III. Sister Lucy Lamy Scholarship Fund

Sister Lucy Lamy spent much of her career serving as Mother Superior or Treasurer at Sacred Heart schools in St. Louis, New Orleans, Grand Coteau, and Duchesne in Houston. Her final 22 years were spent at Duchesne, and families and alumnae created this scholarship fund in her memory upon her death in 1997 at the age of 93. Sister Lamy was beloved by all who knew her, and her life continues to impact Sacred Heart alumnae all over the world. Fair market value as of 6/30/2026 was $53,860

Sister Paula Toner was Headmistress at Duchesne from 1985 until 1996. This scholarship fund was established through the donations of many Duchesne families and alumnae to honor Sister Toner on the occasion of her retirement.

The Joyce and Maurice Beshouri Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2021 by Sharon Beshouri and Kirk Geno in honor of Sharon’s parents. Joyce and Maurice were married for 63 years, the foundation of which was their Catholic faith. They valued education and were proud their two granddaughters graduated from Duchesne. The Cahill Faculty Award

The Cahill Faculty Award was established in 2020 by May Cahill, a 1983 graduate of Duchesne Academy, to support and celebrate excellence in teaching. This award rotates among the three divisions ensuring that faculty across the school benefit from its impact over time. Funds from the award are directed each year toward the most meaningful and transformative professional development opportunities, empowering educators to enhance their expertise, enrich the student experience, and advance Sacred Heart’s mission of excellence in education. Established by the Goizueta Foundation in 2002, this fund provides need-based support for Hispanic/Latina students in grades 5 through 12, helping Duchesne to honor our commitment to student diversity.

The Grabowski Family Scholarship Endowment was established in 2021 by the family of Paul, Kathleen, Marissa, and McKenna Grabowski. This endowment fund will be used to support need-based tuition assistance for a rising 6th, 7th, or 8th grade girl from a diverse background or unique circumstances. The student selected for this award will have the recommendation of a faculty member or a coach and demonstrate strong academic performance and campus involvement. The Dr. Shital Patel and Brian Hungerford Scholarship Endowment

The Dr. Shital Patel and Brian Hungerford Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2026 by Brian Hungerford in memory of his wife, Dr. Shital Patel, whose compassionate spirit and deep commitment to Sacred Heart left a lasting impact. A devoted volunteer and supporter, Dr. Patel believed in the transformative power of a Sacred Heart education. This endowed fund provides need-based tuition assistance, helping ensure that deserving students have access to a Sacred Heart education regardless of their financial circumstances. Mary and Andy Quinn Scholarship Endowment

The Mary and Andy Quinn Scholarship Endowment was established in 2021 by the Andrew M. Quinn Estate. Mary and Andy were Duchesne parents and later grandparents who valued their Catholic faith and Catholic education. Their daughter, Mary Quinn Royston, is a 1980 graduate of Duchesne. Her daughters, Mary Day (Class of 2015), Grace (Class of 2018), and Rose (Class of 2025) have graduated from Duchesne. This endowment fund provides tuition assistance for Upper School students who have matriculated from a Catholic school within the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. This fund was established in 2013 to honor the memory of Duchesne alumnae Alexis Theresa Rinicella. A 2010 Duchesne graduate, Lexi was deeply loved and a leader in her class. Lexi’s family and other generous donors honor her life and legacy by providing tuition assistance for Duchesne students. Traditions Capital Campaign Tuition Assistance Endowment

Donors to the 1994 Affirming Our Tradition – Creating Our Future Capital and Endowment Campaign funded the construction of Duchesne’s chapel and renovations to the White House. It also established a generous endowment for tuition assistance that continues to provide support to many young women who might otherwise not be able to attend Duchesne. Cullen Foundation Scholarship Endowment

The Cullen Foundation was established by Hugh Roy and Lillie Crantz Cullen in 1947. Today, Mr. and Mrs. Cullen’s family continues their legacy of generosity by supporting schools and nonprofit organizations throughout the Houston area. In 1997, the Cullen Foundation made a generous donation to establish an endowed fund that provides tuition assistance for deserving Duchesne students. Fair market value as of 6/30/2026 was $267,291

Marian Fox Martel Scholarship

In 1998, the Marian and Speros Martel Foundation made a generous donation to Duchesne’s tuition assistance endowment to honor the life and legacy of the late Marian Fox Martel and to provide “assistance to Duchesne in a way that may touch the lives of many young women for years to come.” The Martels had no children of their own, but shared their love through their tremendous support of schools and educational programming throughout Houston. Noryne Pereira Jacob Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 1978 by Joseph C. Hutcheson II, Mary Catherine Hutcheson, and the Ladies of the Sacred Heart in honor of Mrs. Hutcheson’s mother. The generosity of the Hutcheson family is still felt at Duchesne today as the fund continues to provide tuition assistance for many Duchesne students. As former Headmistress, Sister Mary Burns wrote many years ago, “I thank you in the name of those who are working at Duchesne presently and for those who will follow us and who will continue our work of spreading the love of Jesus Christ.” Fair market value as of 6/30/2026 was $656,826

This need-based tuition assistance fund supports minority students at Duchesne. Established in 2002 by the family of William Joseph Youtt in honor of his parents, Barbara Wilson Youtt and William Francis Youtt, the family recognized Duchesne Academy for providing a superior education for young women and expressed a strong desire to ensure students of all ethnicities have the opportunity for a Catholic education. This fund was established in 1980 by the Lowman Family in memory of Lawrence Gilbert Lowman. Lawrence and his wife, Stel, were members of the St. Michael Catholic Community and stalwart supporters of Catholic education, endowing scholarships at Duchesne and a number of other institutions.

Allison Atwater Allen was a member of Duchesne’s Class of 1971. She came to Duchesne her junior year and became a leader in her class, serving as class president her senior year. Allison went on to college and then to law school, and she practiced law for just over a year before she was diagnosed with cancer. Allison died in 1984 at the age of 31. Her family and friends have made generous donations to Duchesne in honor of her memory and to support a student in her junior year who excels in Government. Theodore J. Munchak Student Athletic Award

The Munchak Student Athletic Award was established in 1995 by Dr. Jonathan Dora in honor of his uncle, Theodore J. Munchak. Mr. Munchak believed that his participation in sports had a tremendous positive impact on his life. The Munchak award is presented annually to a student in solid academic standing who also excels in athletics. Fair market value as of 6/30/2026 was $44,833

This fund was established in 2001 by the W.T. and Louise S. Moran Foundation in memory of Anna M. Moran, who had a lifelong love of literature and learning. Proceeds from the fund provide financial support for various speakers and programs enjoyed by Duchesne students and faculty every year.

The 1994 Affirming Our Tradition – Creating Our Future Capital and Endowment Campaign raised significant funds to endow professional development and perpetual learning for Duchesne’s faculty. Shanna and Andrew Linbeck Endowment

The AON Merit Scholarship was endowed in 1994 by AON (now AON Hewitt) as part of the Affirming our Tradition – Creating Our Future Capital and Endowment Campaign. This fund provides a merit tuition award to a rising 8th grader who has a strong aptitude and excellent grades in math and science.

In 2010, Shanna and Andrew Linbeck established a fund as a part of the Reaching Up, Branching Out Capital and Endowment Campaign to endow a portion of the salary of a middle school science teacher. The fund was given in memory of Constance Baird Linbeck, who earned a degree in Biology from St. Mary’s University in South Bend, Indiana. Mrs. Linbeck was a member of the St. Anne’s Catholic Community and a steadfast supporter of Duchesne and Catholic education.

Established in 1990 by Duchesne alumnae Donna Lee Davis ’80, the Mary Margaret McCarthy and Harry Edwin Davis Scholarship was endowed to honor the memory of Ms. Davis’ mother and brother, who were both gifted artists. This tuition assistance grant is awarded annually to a student who is artistically gifted to ensure that she has the opportunity to receive a Duchesne education.
