THE return of the tonnage of all kinds that entered the Port of Dublin in 1879 shows an aggregate total of 1,953,902 tons, being 72,283 tons less than in 1878.
The receipts from tonnage were £59,315 6s. 5d., or £8,102 3s. 5d. less than m the year 1878.
The following shows how the several classes of trade have been affected, viz. :-
From Continental Ports Steamers decreased 13,239 tons, and Sailing V easels 2,250 tons ; Vessels with Corn and Flour decreased 21,006 tons; Vessels with Timber decreased 12,094 tons; Vessels with all other traffic decreased 5,254 tons.
In the Coasting and general Cross-channel trade the tonnage of Steamers decreased 38,046 tons; Sailing Vessels decreased 16,036 tons; Steamers with Coal increased 44,447 tons; Sailing Vessels with Coal decreased 8,805 tons.
NORTH WALL QUAY EXTENSION.
The northern or inner face of this work has been completed from the western end adjoining the Graving Slip eastwards to a length of 1,581 feet. The outer or river side of the Wall has been completed to coping level to the length of 1,530 feet, a nd beyond this there are about 145 feet of blocks set in position. The roadway has been formed for a considerable distance between the :finished portions of the Walls, and large Vessels are now enabled to discharge their cargoes on the inner as well as on the river side of the Basin.
The sum of £14,775 9s. 4d. has been expended on the work within the year, making a total of £112,043 7s. 9d. from the commencement, exclusive of Plant and Dredging.
DREDGING.
A total of 773,758 tons was raised in the year, the details of which are set out in the Accounts.
CARLISLE BRIDGE.
The Engineer reports that the Arches of the side additions were :finished and opened for traffic, with temporary Foot-Bridges, in May last, and that the Abutments, Piers, and Arches belonging to the central portion of the New Bridge, and the greater part the eastern parapet, were finished at the close of the year. £46,438 has been paid the Contractor on account since the commencement of the Works.
NEW SWIVEL BRIDGE, BERESFORD PLACE.
This Bridge has been completed, and was used for traffic on the 9th September, 1879. £39,628 has been paid the Contractor on account.
The following is a summary of the traffic that used the Bridge from Monday, the 27th October, to Saturday, the 8th November last (exclusive of Sunday), from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. :-
" The Vehicular traffic, which embraces Carriages with and without fares, and Drays laden and unladen, shows that 18,147 Vehicles passed over the Bridge from north to south, and 19,982 from south to north within the period, or an average of 3,177 Vehicles daily.
"2,232 Cattle of all kinds passed over the Bridge from north to south, and 488 from south to north within the same period, or a daily average of 223.
"384 Equestrians proceeded from north to south, and 269 from south to north, or an average of 66 daily.
"76,693 Pedestrians passed over the Bridge within the same period, averaging 6,308 daily."
CUSTOM HOUSE DOCKS.
The Accounts show that, after payment of expenses, the surplus revenue derived from these Concerns in the past year was £13,101 19s. 6d.
This sum comprises arrears due previous to 1879, referred to in last year's Report, w.hich the Board had directed to be collected ; and also accumulated outstanding rents and charges which the Board collected un~er the authority of the 111th section of the Act of 1869.
DUBLIN PORT AND DOCKS BOARD ACT, 1879.
This Act was promoted by the Board to acquire the following powers, viz. :-
To borrow an additional amount of £260,000 to extend their power over the Estuary of the River Liffey ; to enable Masters of Vessels to obtain Ballast elsewhere than from the Board ; to authorize an increased rate for Ballast to cover its cost; to authorize a tonnage rate on V easels lying beyond six weeks in the Port; to facilitate the removal of goods from off the Quays; and to amend the provisions of the Act of 1869 in regard to audit.
The Bill was amended in Committee by limiting the area of the Estuai, over which the Board is to exercise powers, by determining that the receipts and expenditure
011 account of Ballast shall be arranged with the view that the charge shall equal the cost of supply not exceeding the rates proposed by the Board ; and that the accounts shall be audited by an auditor appointed by the Local Government Board, "provided that the auditor shall not be permitted to inquire into the expediency of any works executed or proposed to be executed by the Board for the maintenance and improvement of the Port, and that the Board in carrying on their business as warehousemen, wharfingers, or storekeepers, may make such allowances and deductions from their accounts as are customary in such business, such allowances and deductions being subject to the audit provided in this Act."
With these alterations the Bill passed through Parliament and received the Royal Assent on the 21st of July, 1879.
ELECTION OF MEMBERS.
In compliance with the provisions of the Dublin Port Act, 1867, an election was held on Wednesday, the 17th December, for three Members to represent Traders and Manufacturers and for three to represent Shipowners on the Board.
The Members elected to represent the Traders were-Mr. J. E. Barry, Mr. Thomas E. Ryan, and Mr. J. M. Inglis ; and to represent the Shipowners-Mr. J. W. Murland, Mr. W. Watson, jun., and Mr. J. Stirling.
The following Members were appointed by the Municipal Corporation:Mr. William Lane Joynt, Alderman Harris, and Alderman Tarpey.
The following Members were nominated by the Commissioners of Irish Lights:Mr. J. C. Colvill, Mr. J. J. Robertson, Mr. J. Bagot, J.P.; Mr. Richard Martin, D.L.; Captain Hardy, R.N. ; Mr. R. Warren, D.L. ; Mr. William Digges La Touche, D.L.
The Board regret to have to record the decease of Mr. Joseph Boyce, who had been a Member since the reconstitution of the Board. Mr. Watson, jun., was appointed to fill the vacancy.
LOAN.
The total amount due on the Mortgage Bonds of the Board on 31st December last was £264,600, and the annnal amount of interest payable thereon .£10,622 12s. 6d.

ENGINEER'S REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1879.
CARLISLE BRIDGE A.ND SWIVEL BRIDGE.-At Carlisle Bridge the arches of the side additions were finished in May and the thoroughfares over these, together with the temporary foot-bridges, were opened to the Public on the 10th of June. The superstructure of the old bridge was then removed and the new abutm ents, piers and arch es belonging to the central portion of the new bridge and also the greater part of th e east ern parapet were finish ed at the clo se of the year. At the Swivel Bridge the north pi er, abutm ent and arch we re built, and the bridge was fini shed and opened to public use on the 9th of Septemb er. The opening portion of th e bridge mov es freely and rapidly and the machinery works satisfactorily
NORTH QUAY ExTENSION.-A total length of 437 feet of foundation blocks was laid-namely, 27 feet on the west side of the North Wall Basin and 410 feet facing the river. The superstructure was finished and coping set for a length of 540 feet, and a length of 41 feet of whole balk sheet piling was driven so as to close the interval b etween the new quay wall and the patent slip, and the boundary wall of the latter was raised for a leng th of 144 feet. The road filling behind the west wall of the Basin was fini shed, and a paved roadway made across the North Quay Extension which enables heavy loads to be carted easily over the newly-made ground. The total lengths of the extended deep-water quays fini sh ed up to coping level at the end of 1879 were as follows :-On the river face 1,530 feet, and on the inner quay s next the Basin 1,540 feet, making with the 41 fe et of sheet piling already mentioned an aggr egate l ength of 3,111 fe et of extended quayage. In addition to this there were, at the close of the year, 145 feet m length of foundation blocks laid on the river face ready for the superstructure to be built thereon.
CUSTOM HousE DocKs.-The vatting accommodation provided in the year 1876 has been increased by an additional vatting chamber and vat calculated to hold 5,000 gallons and placed midway between the two former vats, so that the whole are now commodiously arranged under one roof alongside the whiskey store in Stack A. The extensive repairs of the roofs of the various warehouses carried out during the years 1877 and 1878 were completed early in 1879, and several of the ceilings in Stack D were lathed and plastered in accordance with the requirements of the Excise Department to protect goods stored beneath. Lamps and fence chains were placed at the foot-bridges of both Dock entrances.
NORTH QuAYS.-The tying back for a length of 225 feet of the old quay at the west berth c1.llocated to the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company was completed and the deepening in front nearly finished at the end of December.
SHEDS -Gates have been erected at the shed allocated to Messrs. Tedcastle & Co. on Sir John Rogerson's-quay and the sunken paving was re-set and new truckways made across the shed. New truckways also were made in the three sheds on the North Wall allocated respectively to the British and Irish Steam Packet Company and to the two Glasgow Steam Packet Companies The western extension of the shed opposite the stores of the London and North Western Company, 120 feet in length, was commenced in October and a little more than half the work was finished at the end of the year.
LIGHTHOUSEs.-The lantern has been erected on the tower of the Lighthouse at the end of the North Bull Wall, and contracts have been entered into for the Dioptric apparatus for it as well as for Poolbeg Lighthouse.
SOUTH QuAYs -The paving at the deep-water berths on the south side of the river has been extended along Great Britain Quay and this work will be completed in another year.
TRAMWAYS.-The Tramways at the berths allocated to the London and North ,vestern Railway Company have been extended eastward for a length of 140 feet at the expense of the Company
WHARVEs.-The second half of the decayed superstructure of No. 4 Wharf has been renewed, and the whole of this Wharf is now in good repair.
MOORING BuoYs.-The chains, sinkers and four of the buoys for mooring lie-by vessels in the North Wall Basin were delivered by 'the respective Contractors before the close of the year, and these with the remaining four buoys will shortly be placed in position and permit the quay berths to be free for vessels taking in or discharging cargo.
DREDGING.-The widening and straightening of the river between Ringsend and the Pigeon House have made considerable progress during the year, and several s,hoal spots have been removed opposite the Pigeon House, and also further east between the White Bank and Poolbeg. A large area of the North Wall Basin has been deepened, chiefly at the east end. The deepening of the west berth allocated to the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company was nearly finished at the close of the year, and the north half of the river has been thoroughly dredged from George's Dock to the mouth of the Dodder.

The Accounts of this Department for the year 1879 show a credit balance of £13,101 ms. 6d. Of this sum about £2,400 represents the amount of arrears of charges collected during the year. Besides this about £1,900 has been received for arrears of rents, &c. The two la t-mentioned sums being deducted from the total credit balance, leaves a profit on the past year's working of £8,801 19s. 6d.
The debts which have accrued for Rent and Charges on the Goods now in Store, calculated to the 31st December last, amount to £19,788 6s. 3d., as follows:Rent. Charges. Whisky, -

This statement will afford a basis for our accounts during the present year.
The Stock of Grain is considerably less than last year, whilst that of Whisky has greatly increased. The Bottling Department is also greatly increased-hence the necessity for extending our accommodation.

We have inspected and examined the Accounts of Receipts and Expenditure of the Dublin Port and Docks Board, as per their written statement for the half-year ended 30th June, 1879, with the Accounts of "Pilotage," "Custom House Docks," "Balbriggan Harbour," "Skerries Harbour," "West Quay Walls and Bridges," "New Bridges," and "New Bridges Rates," &c., to the same period, in accordance with section 239 of the Dublin Port and Docks Act, 1869, and we certify the same to be correct.
We also certify, that according to the return presented to us, the liabilities of the Dublin Port and Docks Board on the 30th June, 1879, were £319,588 8s. 2d., which sum includes the Debenture Debt as specified on page 6, and there are also arrears of Interest on Debenture Debt, £1,248 Irish. Arrears of Interest on Mortgage Loan, £61 17s. 6d., and an overdraft on the Bank of Ireland amounting to £3,171 16 s 3d.

THE returns of tonnage that entered the Port of Dublin in the past year exhibit an aggregate total of 1,930,277 tons, being 23,625 tons less than in the year 1879.
The receipts from tonnage were £58,470 14s. 4d., or £844 12s ld. below 1879.
The following shows how the several classes of trade were affected, viz. :-
Fr0m Continental Ports Steamers increased 635 tons and Sailing Vessels 580 tons; Vessels with Corn and Flour decreased 13,761 tons ; Vessels laden with Sugar imported 4,238 tons; Vessels with Timber increased 777 tons; Vessels with all other traffic increased 906 tons.
In the Coasting and general Cross-channel trade the tonnage of Steamers increased 28,434 tons; Sailing Vessels decreased 5,753 tons.
Steamers with Coal decreased 7,984 tons; Sailing Vessels with Coal decreased 31,697 tons.
IMPROVEMENTS.
North Wall Quay Extension.-This work was continued throughout the year with the result that a further length of 426 feet has been added to the outer or river side of the Wall, making a total of about 1956 feet of Quay Wall on the river side completed to coping level, and a further . extension eastwards of about 109 feet of concrete blocks set in position.
£13,805 17s. 8d. was expended on the work within the year, to which may be added £2554 16s. 9d. for pavement of the roadway.
South Quay Deepening.-The Act of 1879 having authorised the Board to borrow further sums of money for the improvement of the Harbour, the Board entered into a contract with Messrs. H. and J. Martin to extend westwards for 500 feet the deep-water berths on Sir John Rogerson's-quay, from the point :finished at Forbes-street in 1875, at a cost of £24,973 17s. 4d., to be completed on the 28th of February, 1882.
The Engineer states that 55 feet of masonry, built to a height of 13 feet above the foundations, was completed at the close of the year.
DREDGING PLANT.
In furtherance of the powers given the Board by the Act of 1879 contracts were also entered into with Messrs. H. M'Intyre & Co., of Paisley, to supply a new Steam Dredger by the 23rd December, 18 1, at a cost of £18,000; and also with Messrs. Workman, Clark, & o. (Limited), Belfast, to sup}Jly three Hopper Barges by the 9th November, 1881, at a cost of £14,700.
Both these contracts are making satisfactory progress.
DREDGING.
Including the dredging of the North Wall Basin, a total of 816,560 tons was raised within the year.
LIGHTHOUSES.
A new Lighthouse, for better indicating the entrance to the Harbour of Dublin, has been erected at the end of the orth Bull Wall, about 1,000 feet north of Poolbeg Lighthou . e, at a total co t of £4310 19s. 2d., and an intermittent ljght was exhibited therefrom on the 11th August, 18 0.
At Poolbeg a new lantern and apparatus, at a cost of £767 7s. 4d., has been provided, thereby considerably improving the light to seaward.
A new Beacon Light is also approaching completion in the river channel.
NEW BRIDGES.
Carlisle Bridge (renamed O'Connell Bridge by the Municipal Council).-The entire thoroughfare of this Bridge was opened to public use in August last. £13,268 was paid the Contractor within the year, making a total of .£59, 706 paid to him since the commencement of the contract.
Swivel Bridge. - The final payment of £4628 15s. ld., on account of this Bridge, was made to the Contractor within the year, making the total cost £44,156 15s. ld.
CUSTOM HOUSE DOCKS.
The Accounts of these Concerns show a balance to credit of £7 444 3s. 3d.
MEMBERS.
Mr. Robert Tedcastle was appointed a Member of the Board, m room of Dr. Gibbon, re'3igned.
The total amount due on the Mortgag e Bonds of the Board on 31st December ]ast was £269,600, and the annual amount of intere st payable thereon £11,290 10s.
The Ballast Office Debenture Debt at the same date was £73,938 8s. 2d., and the .annual amount of interest payable thereon £2957 10s. 9d.
AUDIT OF ACCOUNTS.
In accordance with the provisions of the Act of 1879, the Accounts of the Board for the Half-year ended 31st December, 1879, were submitted to the Auditor appointed by the Local Government Board, and duly audited.

ENGINEER'S REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1880.
NEW BRIDGES.-The following are the principal works executed at Carlisle Bridge (renamed O'Connell Bridge by the Municipal Council) from the commencement of the year until the completion of the thoroughfare over the bridge and approaches in the month of August. The centres under the arches of the central portion of the bridge were struck and removed and the arches were pointed. A portion of the east and the whole of the we~t parapet were built and the carving was finished, very much to the credit of Mr. Harrison, the sculptor. Gas, water and pneumatic pipes were laid in the subways which were then finished and covered in and the footpaths were constructed and the permanent lamps erected. The roa<lway over the central portion of the bridge was paved and the approachrs lowered and repaired and the whole thoroughfare was opened to public use early in August, after which the Contractor proceeded with the dredging of the foreshores. The contract for the Swivel Bridge terminated in the end of February. This bridge is substantially built and the work is very cretlital,le to the Contractor, Mr. Doherty.
NORTH QUAY ExTENSION.-Some very soft ground has been met with on the river face of this work which has caused some delay in preparing the foundations. Notwithstanding this dehi y, 388 lineal feet of blocks have been laid and the superstructure has been finished for a length of 426 feet on the river face. A large amount of filling has been put behind the wall, and the paving has been greatly extended and has given further facilities for the increasing traffic at these important berths.
SOUTH QuAY DEEPENING.-A contract for extending the deep water berths on Sir John Rogertion's Quay for 500 feet west of the portion finished in 187 5 was made with Messrs. H. & J. Martin, of Belfast, on the 28th of June and, at the close of the year, 55 feet in length of masonry was built to a height of 13 feet above the foundation.
TRAMWAYS.-The tramway in Guild-street, connecting the Midland Great Western Railway with the quays, was finished and open for traffic at the end of July, and the tramway opposite the new terminus of the Great Southern and Western Railway has been extended for 900 feet along the river frontage of the North Quay Extension.
LIGHTHOUSEs.-At Poolbeg Lighthouse a new lantern has been erected and the improved light was exhibited on the 11th of August. On the same date an occulting light was lighted for the first time at the North Bull Lighthouse, so that both sides of the entrance to the river are now well defined. The tower and lantern of Beacon Lighthouse No. 1 were finished and ready for the optical apparatus at the close of the year.
CUSTOM HousE DocKs.-The passage between the Queen's Timber Yard and the other dock premises has been widened and the roadway improved to facilitate the tmffic.
SOUTH QuAYS .-The remainder of the set pa~ing along the deep-water quays on the south side of the rive1· has been finished and adds very materially to the utility of these berths. The parapet along Burgh Quay was raised so as to enable the Corporation to improve the level of the thoroughfare.
SHEDS .-The westem extension of the shed opposite the stores of the London and North Western Railway Company was finished and the tramway altered to correspond early in March. The length of this extension is 120 feet.
MOORING BuoYS.-Eight large moorings for lie-by ves~els were placed m the east end of the North Wall Basin in April.
~rHARVE .-The decayed superstructure of No. 3 Wharf has been completely renewed for a length of 118 feet, and the other Wharves have been kept in good repair.
DREDGING -A large amount of deep dredging was executed during the year, some of it in very hard ground. The bar opposite the entrance to the Dodder, consisting of indurated clay and gravel, was deepened to about 22 feet at low water, nnd the deep water area in the North Wall Ba in now extends over 24 acres. The shallow portions along the north side of the river between the concrete wall and No. 6 Beacon have been further deepened, and the central part of the river between Lime-street und W apping-street was cleared of mud. A survey of the river was made by Capt. Langdon, R.N. in October, which will be shortly published by the Admiralty. It shows the great improvements which have been made in the river channel since the previous survey in 1856. Contracts for a steam dredger and three hopper barges were entered into last summer, and at the close of the year the barges were in frame and the boilers and engines of the dredger were in progress.

EXPENDITURE UP TO 31sT DECEMBER, 1881.
RE .PORT.
THE total registered tonnage of shipping that entered the Port of Dublin in the year ended 31st December, 1881, was 1,816,917 tons, or 113,360 tons less than that entered in the year 1880.
This decrease may be mainly attributed to depression of trade, and to the reduction of the measurement of steam vessels, consequent upon the recent decision of the Law Courts.
The several classes of trade were affected as follows :-
From Continental Ports steamers increased 1,191 tons, and sailing vessels decreased 682 tons ; vessels with corn and flour decreased 36, 113 tons; vessels laden with sugar increased 1,620 tons; vessels with timber decreased 3,890 tons; vessels with all other traffic increased 3,207 tons.
In the Coasting and general Cross-channel trade the tonnage of steamers decreased 91,590 tons, and sailing vessels decreased 8,165 tons.
Steamers with Coal increased 32,002 tons, and sailing vessels with Coal decreased 10,940 tons.
The receipts from Tonnage were £54,617 12s. 9d., being £3,867 5s. 8d. less than that received in the preceding year.
IMPROVEMENTS-NORTH WALL QUAY EXTE SION.
During the year 1881, 186 feet of deep-water quayage were added to the outer side of this work, making a total length of 2,142 feet of quayage on the River side completed to coping level ; and on the inner side of the Wall a further length of 84 feet, completing 1,625 feet of quayage on the Basin side of the Extension. The formation of the roadway between the walls also progressed.
The sum of £9,146 8s. 5d. was expended on the work within the year, including a small amount for paving.
Application having been made for Shed accommodation on the North Wall Quay Extension, the Board, finding such to be desirable, entered into a Contract with Messrs. Collen, Brothers, of Portadown, to construct a Shed for the general purposes of the Port, at a cost of £2,445. The work is in course of erection, and will be completed early in the ensumg year.
SOUTH QUAY DEEPENING.
The Contract entered into by the Board in 1880 with Messrs. H. & J. Martin to construct 500 feet of additional deep-water berths on Sir John Rogerson's Quay is expected to be completed within the contract time-viz., 28th February, 1882. The completion of this work will give 2,800 feet of berthage on the South side of the River that will enable vessels drawing from 20 to 22 feet to lie afloat at all times of tide.
£18,745 18s. ld. was paid within the year on account of this work.
NEW DREDGER.
The Contract with Messr s M'lntyre & Co., of Paisley, to supply a new Steam Dredger has been fulfilled.
The Dredger arrived in Dublin on the 4th November last.
The sum of £16,376 ls. 3d. was paid within the year on account of this Contract.
THREE HOPPER BARGES.
The Contract with Messrs Workman, Clarke, and Co. (Limited), of Belfast, to supply the above has also been fulfilled, and the B a r g es are working satisfactorily.
£13,335 8s. was paid within the year on account of this Contract.
DREDGING.
The total number of tons raised within th e year was 802,805.
LIGHTHOUSES.
The new Beacon Light Tow er on the North side of the River Channel i completed, and a Contract has been entered into for the supply of the Optical Apparatu s
THE NEW BRIDGES.
The Accounts show that the total sum of £11,652 ls. was paid within the year on account of these works, includip.g final payment to the Contractor.
GRAVING DOCK.
The gates, &c., of the Graving Dock, constructed in 1860, were renewed m Midsummer.
CUSTOM HOUSE DOCKS.
These Concerns show a balance to credit of £3,674 5s. 8d. LOAN.
The total amount due on the Mortgage Bonds of the Board on 31st December, 1881, was £319,600, and the amount of interest paid within the year was £11,553 9s. lld.
The Ballast Office Debenture Debt at the same period was £73,476 17s. 4d., and the annual amount of interest payable thereon £2,712 19s. lld.
AUDIT OF ACCOUNTS.
The Accounts of the Board for year ended 31st December, 1880, were laid before the Auditor appointed in accordance with the Act of 1879, and were duly audited.

ENGINEER'S ~EPO~T FOR THE YEAR 1881.
NORTH QUAY ExTE SION.-ln the course of the year 302 lineal feet of blocks were laid, of which 85 feet were on the riv e r face and 217 feet in the Basin Wall . 270 feet of supei-:;tructure have been :finished, of which 186 feet wei-e o the river face and 84 feet in the Basin. The last thirteen blocks in the Basin were each 31 feet in height, so as to provide berthage at low water for ve ssels drawing 26 feet These are the highest blocks that have hitherto been constructed. A large quantity of :filling has been placed behind the walls, and cast-iron mooring posts have been erected along both quays. The total length of the extension quays :finished at the end of 1881 was 3,767 feet, of which 2,142 feet were on the river face, and 1,625 feet in the Basin. In the early part of the year four large timber fenders were erected at the :first rivei- berth of the North Quay Extension to adapt it for paddle steamers.
SOUTH QUAY DEEPENING. -The foundations of the new quay wall for extending the deep water berths on Sir John Rogerson\, Quay opposite the premises of the Alliance and Dublin Consumers Ga s Company were laid for a length of 445 feet, and the wall built to the underside of coping for the full length of the contract-namely, 500 feet, and 395 feet of coping were set. When this contract is completed there will be a total length of 2,793 feet of deep-water quays on the south side of the river.
TRAMWAYs.-A cross-over was made to connect the double lines of tramway in the shed allocated to the London and North \V es t ern Rail way Company, and a curved branch was made across the North Wall, to connect the quay line of tramways with the Cattle Yard of the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company. Opposite the new station of the Great Southern and Western Railway Company seven crossings and a curve were made to connect the quay lines with the railway, and the quay tramway was extended and two turntables erected. The roadway in front of the Station had :fifteen feet added to its width for the whole frontage of the railway premises.
LIGIITIIOUSES.-A contract was entered into in the spring of the year with Messrs. J. Edmundson and Co. foi- the optical apparatus for Beacon Lighthouse No. 1.
CusTOl\I-HousE DocKs.-The defective limestone paving between the main gate in Store-street and the inner bridge was replaced by Welsh paving, laid on concrete and grouted with tar mastic. The inner bridg e which was struck by a steamer in May, and seriously injured, was repaired, and a temporary foot-bridge was erected during the progress of the work.
SHEDS -The shed allocated to the Glasgow and Dublin Steam Packet Company had both sides closed and gates erected, and that allocated to Laird's Line had the river sid e closed and a gate erected. A contract was entered into in the month of October with Messt·s. Collen Bros. for the construction of a shed on the North Quay Extension, and at the end of the year the walls were built to a height of about five feet over ground level.
GRAYING DocK.-During the summer a coffer-dam was constructed across the entrance of the Graving Dock, and the timber sills, heel and meeting posts of the gates, which had been more than twenty years in constant use and were badly eaten by marine worms, were renewed with creosoted red pine timber. At the same time a new centrifugal pump was erected, and the engines and machinery were repaired.
BEACON BuoYs.-Fourteen new buoys for marking the bar and river channel and one wreck buoy, have been supplied to the Harbour Master's department.
WHARVES.-The decayed superstructure of No. 3 Wharf has be completely renewed for 120 feet additional to the length renewed in 1880, and minor repairs were carried out at the other Wharves.
WE ST QuAY WALLS AND BRIDGES,-The iron work of Grattan and Victoria Bridges and the balustrades of the intermediate bridges and Inns Quay were painted, and a large area of the West Quay Walls was pointed.
D&EDGING.-The large Steam Dredger and the three Hopper Barges, contracted for in 1880, have been delivered, and will add materially to the efficiency of the dredging department. A new boiler has been placed in the tug steamer, and has proved satisfactory and economical in fuel. The total quantity dredged during the year is 802,805 tons, as given in the following table, in which the dredging for maintenance is estimated at 200,000 tons :-
