Three Probable Risks That Might Take Place In A University Universities are complex institutions that face a variety of risks that can impact students, staff, property, and reputation. Identifying potential risks is essential for effective risk management and ensuring a safe, secure, and conducive environment for learning and development. In this paper, we explore three probable risks specific to the University of North Texas: cyber security breaches, physical violence or active shooter scenarios, and health epidemics. Each risk is defined, accompanied by relevant statistics in the U.S., and illustrated with real-life examples from the university or similar institutions to highlight the significance of these threats. Cyber Security Breaches Cyber security breach refers to unauthorized access to or manipulation of data stored digitally, leading to the potential loss of sensitive information, financial theft, or disruption of university operations. In the age of digital transformation, higher education institutions handle vast amounts of personal, academic, and financial data, making them prime targets for cyberattacks. According to the 2022 IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report, the average cost of a data breach in the United States is $9.44 million, with healthcare and education sectors experiencing the highest costs (IBM, 2022). Cyberattacks often occur through phishing, malware, ransomware, or insider threats, jeopardizing student records, faculty research, and administrative data. For example, in 2021, the University of Florida experienced a ransomware attack that temporarily disrupted campus operations and compromised some student and staff data (FBI, 2021). At the University of North Texas, the risk of cyber breaches is particularly acute due to the large student and staff population, amounting to over 38,000 students and 4,843 employees (UNT Fact Book, 2022). Although specific incidents at UNT are not publicly documented, the university’s extensive use of digital platforms for registration, grades, and research increases vulnerability. A hypothetical breach could lead to identity theft, academic disruption, financial loss, and reputational damage. To mitigate this, UNT invests in cybersecurity protocols, regular staff training, and system audits.
