The purpose of this assignment is to critically review four scholarly articles that employ multivariate analyses in their research. The ultimate goal is to enhance the researcher's ability to interpret and evaluate complex statistical analyses within different research contexts, thereby developing a deeper understanding of how multivariate techniques are utilized across various fields of social sciences and behavioral research.
In conducting this review, I selected four articles based on their relevance and prominence in applying multivariate analyses. The first article by Bates et al. (2003) investigates factors influencing social competence among children of adolescent mothers, utilizing statistical methods to explore relationships between multiple variables. The second article by Fish and Scott (2007) predicts academic performance in MBA students, emphasizing predictive or correlational models. The third by Lubin and Fiedler (1999) examines patterns of affect to predict discharge outcomes during Airforce basic training, applying pattern analysis techniques. The fourth article by McKenry et al. (1999) evaluates a parent education program, using statistical tests to assess differences pre- and post-intervention, thus involving group comparisons. Lastly, Sharma et al. (2000) explores knowledge structures' impact on retail sales, focusing on relationships among variables related to sales performance.
For each selected article, I constructed a comprehensive table that categorizes the key elements necessary for understanding the employed statistical tests. The table includes details about the research questions or hypotheses, the focus of each analysis (relationships, group differences, membership, or structure), the number and nature of IVs and DVs, their measurement levels, the presence and number of covariates, and the specific statistical tests used. This systematic approach provides clarity on the analytical strategies and supports an informed interpretation of the research findings and their implications.
Overall, this exercise aims to refine the skills needed to critically analyze research articles, particularly regarding the appropriateness and execution of multivariate statistical procedures. Ensuring that one can
accurately identify the research questions and match them with suitable statistical tests fosters a deeper appreciation of research design and analytical rigor.
