Among the primary leadership styles—authoritative, democratic, and laissez-faire—each comes with distinct characteristics that can significantly impact team dynamics, decision-making processes, and ultimately, the quality of care provided. For this discussion, I will describe a leader from my healthcare organization, analyze their leadership style, and explore how their approach affects healthcare quality and outcomes. The leader I have in mind exhibits a democratic leadership style. This individual encourages participation from team members in decision-making processes, fosters open communication, and values input from all levels of staff. Characteristics that inform this perception include active listening, valuing team members’ opinions, and fostering an environment of collaboration and mutual respect. For example, this leader regularly holds team meetings to solicit feedback before implementing changes, demonstrating a participative approach that empowers staff. In considering which characteristics I would integrate into my own leadership style, I admire the democratic leader’s emphasis on collaboration and inclusive decision-making. These traits promote a sense of ownership among team members, which can enhance motivation, job satisfaction, and collective accountability. By involving team members in decisions that affect their work, I believe I can foster a more engaged and committed healthcare team, leading to improved patient care. However, I would prefer not to adopt some aspects of laissez-faire leadership, such as a lack of oversight or guidance. While autonomy is beneficial, complete disengagement can lead to confusion and inconsistent practices that compromise patient safety. Instead, I aim for a balanced approach that encourages autonomy
