There Are Many People Who Can Look Inward And Decide That There Is A N Many individuals recognize the need for personal change and progress through a series of psychological stages when altering their behaviors. According to Prochaska and DiClemente (1984), the process of behavior change involves five sequential stages: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. These stages serve as a useful framework for understanding how individuals transition from recognizing a problem to sustaining long-term change. This paper reflects on personal experiences with caffeine consumption, examining it through the lens of these stages of change. Particularly, it explores my initial avoidance of caffeine, the circumstances that prompted its increased use during military training, and my current awareness of its problematic effects. Additionally, the paper considers how motivation and behavioral change concepts, as discussed by Miller and Rollnick (2013), can be incorporated to facilitate healthier habits.

My initial abstinence was rooted in personal preference and perhaps a natural aversion to the stimulant effects of caffeine. However, my stance changed when I entered the military and attended sniper school. The rigorous demands of military training, particularly sleep deprivation and the necessity for sustained alertness, led me to introduce caffeine into my routine to enhance performance. In sniper school, sleep deprivation was a critical challenge. Trainees were often awake for twenty or more hours, followed by physically demanding activities such as road marches of 12 to 20 miles. The demand to remain alert and functional during long periods of wakefulness, especially when positioned in a prone stance waiting to shoot, made caffeine a practical aid. The stimulant helped me stay awake and alert during extended periods of inactivity, although I became increasingly dependent on it to perform well under these grueling conditions. Currently, I perceive myself as being in the contemplation stage of change. I recognize that my caffeine consumption is becoming more problematic than helpful. Initially, caffeine served as a tool to combat fatigue, but over time, its effects have shifted. The reliance on caffeine has escalated from two shots of espresso to four or five at a time, indicating a tolerance development. Moreover, after the initial stimulant boost, significant crashes often occurred, compelling me to consume more caffeine to recover, which perpetuated a cycle of dependence.
