There Are A Number Of Authentic Assessment Techniques Based On Communi There are a number of authentic assessment techniques based on communication: both communication between teacher and child and between teacher and parent/s. Among these strategies are oral reading tests (running records), teacher-child mini-conferences, jointly determined portfolios, child self-evaluation. The ability of an educator to orally communicate (speaking/listening) is essential for authentic strategies to accurately assess a child’s progress. Let us explore some of these key assessment strategies in detail. Oral reading tests, such as running records, are practical tools that allow teachers to observe and evaluate a child's reading fluency, comprehension, and decoding skills in real-time. These assessments are effective because they mimic authentic reading situations and provide immediate insights into a child's reading level. Teacher-child mini-conferences serve as a personalized approach where educators engage children in one-on-one conversations about their work, fostering better understanding of their thinking and learning processes. Portfolios, especially when jointly determined by teachers and children, offer a comprehensive view of ongoing progress and allow children to reflect on their work, fostering self-awareness and a growth mindset. Child self-evaluation encourages students to critically analyze their learning, set goals, and recognize areas for improvement, making assessment a collaborative and empowering process. Matching assessment techniques with how children learn is fundamental to creating an effective learning environment. For example, young children often learn best through active engagement, play, and interactive communication; thus, assessments like portfolios and self-evaluations align well with these developmental preferences. For children with special needs, accommodations might include visual supports, extended time, simplified instructions, or assistive technology to ensure equitable participation and accurate assessment of their abilities. Incorporating varied assessment strategies is crucial for capturing a complete picture of individual learning progress and accommodating diverse learner needs. In my classroom experience, I plan to use these authentic assessment techniques to better understand each child's unique learning style and progress. For instance, regular mini-conferences will facilitate ongoing dialogue and personalized feedback, fostering a supportive environment for learning. Portfolios will serve as a tool for students to showcase their work and reflect on their growth over time, promoting self-regulation and motivation. Understanding the importance of communication-based assessments has reinforced the value of establishing strong, trusting relationships with both students and parents. These
