Addressing Healthcare Access Barriers Through Telehealth and Online Health Information: An Annotated Bibliography
In the evolving landscape of healthcare, access remains a persistent challenge for many populations, particularly those in rural areas, individuals with mobility issues, or those facing socioeconomic barriers. The media piece I reviewed highlights how technological innovations—such as telehealth services and online health information systems—offer promising solutions to improve healthcare access. My professional interest in this topic stems from my work in community health, where I frequently encounter patients who struggle to access traditional healthcare services due to geographic or transportation issues. Understanding the role of digital health interventions is crucial for developing effective, accessible healthcare delivery models.
To explore this area further, I conducted searches in academic databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar using keywords including "telehealth," "online health information seeking," "healthcare access," and "rural nursing." My criteria for article selection centered on currency (published within the past five years), peer-reviewed status, relevance to healthcare access barriers, and focus on digital health interventions. Four scholarly articles meeting these criteria were selected to inform my understanding of best practices in using telehealth and online information systems to address access issues.

Summary of Learning
Developing this annotated bibliography deepened my understanding of how digital technologies can overcome healthcare access barriers. The selected articles collectively demonstrate that online health information and telehealth services are valuable tools, especially for populations facing geographic, physical, or socioeconomic challenges. They underscore the importance of designing user-centric systems, ensuring equitable internet access, and addressing legal and privacy concerns to successfully implement telehealth interventions. My research reinforced the concept that technology-enabled healthcare solutions must be accessible, trustworthy, and tailored to the needs of diverse patient groups to effectively enhance healthcare access and outcomes.
