Article Review: Students Will Identify A Scholarly Article About A Nonp

Students will identify a scholarly article about a nonprofit agency that are related to a topic from your readings and class discussion. By “article,” I mean an article published in a refereed journal (for example, you can find many of them on JSTOR, Evaluation Review, etc. on the Barry Online Library) I also used eric.ed.gov and found peer-reviewed articles. Each review will be a minimum of 5 pages, in essay format. Provide full citation using APA. Summarize its content, discuss the relevance/impact of the article to nonprofit administration, identify and explain concepts from the readings that apply to the situation described in the article.

You must cite appropriately using APA. Cover page and appendices do not count toward the 5 pages. Use the following format as a guide in writing your article reviews. The selected scholarly article for this review examines the role of strategic planning within nonprofit organizations, emphasizing its influence on organizational effectiveness and sustainability. The main purpose of this article is to analyze how strategic planning processes impact nonprofit agencies' capacity to achieve their mission-related goals while adapting to changing external environments. The author wrote this article to address a gap in existing literature, which often highlights strategic planning as a best practice but fails to critically assess its actual implementation and outcomes within nonprofit contexts.

The key question that the author is addressing is: How does strategic planning influence the operational success and long-term sustainability of nonprofit organizations? This question reflects the author’s focus on linking strategic planning practices with tangible organizational results and lessons learned from empirical case studies. The most important information in this article includes data from multiple case studies demonstrating that organizations with comprehensive, well-implemented strategic plans tend to perform better in terms of mission achievement, resource allocation, and stakeholder engagement.

The main inferences or conclusions in this article are that strategic planning, when properly executed, significantly enhances nonprofit organizations' capacity to adapt strategically, allocate resources efficiently, and sustain operations over time. Conversely, organizations that neglect strategic planning or implement it superficially often face challenges such as mission drift, financial instability, and diminished stakeholder trust. The article emphasizes that strategic planning is not a static process but an ongoing cycle that requires leadership commitment, clear communication, and evaluation mechanisms.

The key concepts we need to understand in this article include the importance of strategic direction, stakeholder analysis, environmental scanning, and performance measurement. By these concepts, the author means a systematic approach to assessing internal strengths and weaknesses alongside external opportunities and threats, enabling organizations to develop coherent strategies aligned with their mission. These concepts underline the importance of evidence-based decision-making and organizational learning within nonprofits.

The main assumptions underlying the author’s thinking are that nonprofit organizations, like their

for-profit counterparts, benefit from strategic planning; that leadership commitment is essential for successful implementation; and that external factors such as funding variability and policy changes significantly influence organizational outcomes. If these assumptions are taken seriously, the implications are that nonprofit managers should prioritize strategic planning as a crucial component of organizational governance. Conversely, ignoring these assumptions could result in missed opportunities for growth and resilience or unpreparedness for external shocks.

The author’s points of view focus on viewing strategic planning as a necessary, dynamic process integral to effective nonprofit management. The author sees strategic planning as a tool for not only guiding internal decision-making but also engaging stakeholders and responding to external environmental changes. The perspective presented emphasizes strategic adaptability, continuous improvement, and evidence-based management as critical success factors for nonprofits.
