Argumentative Paper Instructions: Developing a Persuasive Academic Essay

This paper will be a typed 4-5-page (no less, no more, and not including your APA cover page and reference page) paper arguing either for or against a topic of your choosing (cannot argue for both sides).

An argumentative paper is a biased form of writing, because it is typically written with the intent to get readers to agree with the opinions/arguments of the author. Usually, the topics for this type of essay are controversial. A good argumentative essay gives the pros and cons of the issue, and explains why the side of the author (you) is the best side. The goal in the essay should be persuade readers to believe the views of the author. You must provide arguments to support your stance and use evidence/research to back up your claims.

You must have at least 3 credible sources (NO Wikipedia) the sources must consist of 2 academic sources (scholarly journal articles from the CSUSB database) and 1 credible non-academic source (NO Wikipedia, pro/con sites, or Researchomatic). You must use APA format to cite your sources throughout your writing and in your reference page. This paper should have subheadings. Below are some examples you might use: • Introduction/Background (introduce your topic and give background information for readers understand, then clearly state your stance on the issue) • Main arguments (present what you are arguing clearly by using evidence and comparisons to support your claims. Then briefly present the other side to then prove why your side is correct.) • Conclusion (conclude your thoughts by reminding the reader of your most salient arguments and why your side is the correct side.

Be sure that you are arguing for a side, you do not want your readers to be confused at the end of your essay. Moreover, you should ensure that your topic has more than one side.

The assignment requires composing a compelling and well-structured argumentative essay that spans 4 to 5 pages, exclusive of cover and reference pages. The central goal is to persuade readers to accept the stance the author advocates by presenting a logical, evidence-based case. These essays are inherently biased, as they aim to support a specific viewpoint on a controversial topic, offering a balanced discussion of pros and cons before establishing the superiority of the chosen side.

Choosing an appropriate topic is crucial; it must be controversial enough to warrant debate and should have clearly identifiable opposing viewpoints. The writer must adopt a definitive position and argue

convincingly for it, avoiding ambiguity. The selected stance should be supported through strong arguments that integrate credible evidence, such as statistics, testimonies, and scholarly research, to bolster claims. This evidence should be critically analyzed and compared to opposing viewpoints to demonstrate the validity and strength of the chosen side.

Research is fundamental in crafting an effective argument. A minimum of three credible sources is necessary: two scholarly journal articles accessible via the CSUSB database, which lend academic credibility, and one reliable non-academic source, such as reputable news outlets or organizational reports, to provide a real-world perspective. Proper APA citation is mandatory throughout the paper, including in-text citations and the reference list, ensuring academic integrity and consistency.

The paper must incorporate subheadings to organize key sections: an Introduction/Background providing context and thesis statement; a Main Arguments section elaborating on supporting points with evidence and addressing counterarguments; and a Conclusion summarizing key arguments and reaffirming the stance. Each paragraph should be well-developed, cohesion maintained through effective transitions, and the writing should reflect college-level standards of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.

Adherence to length requirements is essential; the essay must be between 4 and 5 pages, not including the cover and reference pages. Successful completion of the assignment will yield a cohesive, persuasive essay that not only demonstrates critical thinking and research skills but also communicates a clear stance to the reader, emphasizing why this position is the most justified based on the presented evidence.
