having episodes where she would just freeze and not react to things around her. Pretty soon the freezing spells got worse, and the dog would tip right over and faint. “I took her to our vet, Dr. Leanne Froese in Preston,” Berg recalled. After examining Tara, Froese diagnosed her with Sick Sinus Syndrome (SSS). SSS is a condition where the heart’s natural pacemaker no longer sends the correct signals to the heart to generate normal heartbeats. This condition is common in various animals, as well as humans. “They monitored her heart and found that it would stop, sometimes for up to 14 seconds,” Berg continued. “I really didn’t think there was anything they could do for Tara.” Froese told Berg there were certain medications that provided some relief but added that they were putting pacemakers in dogs and having very good results. Berg didn’t give it a second thought. If there was any way to save his beloved pet, he was willing to do whatever it took. After some tests were conducted, it was determined that Tara was an excellent candidate for a pacemaker implant. Medtronic, a Florida-based company, not only manufactures pacemakers for various animals, including dogs, but participates in a program where the high-tech devices are donated to ailing animals. “I found out Tara qualified for the procedure on a Friday and they told me to have her up to the University of Minnesota the following Wednesday.” Berg said he was

Richard Berg of Harmony recently took the love of his dog to a whole new level. Tara, a 12-year-old miniature schnauzer, received a pacemaker earlier this year. And, to Berg’s relief, the spunky, grey pooch is now more youthful and energetic than ever. “It’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me,” Berg said last week, while hugging Tara. “When I found out Tara had a serious heart condition, I thought I was going to lose her.” Berg noticed that Tara, who he welcomed into his home on Father’s Day, 2011, started

What do an Army Colonel, a golf coach, a high school marketing teacher and a Parks & Recreation chairman have in common? Rich Gaard! From the fairways of Decorah to the shores of Germany, 77-year-old Rich Gaard’s curriculum vitae reads like a fantastical bucket list of occupations and accomplishments that have taken him to all corners of the globe, each chapter of his resumé more wondrous than the last. Gaard, a Waverly native, found himself in Decorah in 1969 after graduating from Wartburg College with a degree in business. He was hired at Thomas Roberts Senior High School (later renamed Decorah High School) to teach and oversee the school’s brandnew Distributive Education Club of America. ing. As a successful golfer in college, Gaard also began coaching the high school’s golf team, a job that would span the next 52 years. As if being a teacher, DECA advisor, AV director and golf coach wasn’t enough, Gaard also found time to coach junior high basketball and football, and led numerous DECA groups, as well as golf, basketball and football teams, to regional, state and national championships. In 1971, Gaard enlisted in the Army Reserves and received training in general carpentry, construction and engineering. He was assigned to Company B with the 389th Engineer Battalion at Decorah’s Army Reserve Unit, where his unit completed numerous community projects at local parks, schools and city properties. In 1974, Gaard married fellow DHS teacher, Carol McClure, and soon after, he completed Army Officer Candidate School. As time passed and Gaard advanced through the officer ranks, his various talents and education made him an optimum candidate for a variety of specific and unique jobs. He continued to teach and coach while simultaneously expanding his military ecumen. at West Point, and he later found himself part of special training team with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Germany. While serving as the liaison officer, Gaard also spent a year as a coordinator of that year’s U.S. team of reserve officers who participated in the annual pentathlon of the International Confederation of Reserve Officers in Belgium. He continued excelling as state director of West Point and served as a combat arms officer and a unit commander. Gaard achieved full-bird Colonel while serving at the Pentagon as Deputy Legislative Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He retired from teaching at DHS in 2004, after 35 years. In 2006, Gaard retired from his Army service, with two Legion of Merit awards and an expansive 34-year military career to his credit. Gaard continued his coaching stint, finally retiring earlier this year after 52 years. Gaard still volunteers with West Point Academy and was recently reappointed for his fourth year as a member of the Department of Veterans Affairs Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans’ Illnesses.

Holiday table garland workshop Nov. 16 Decorah Public Library is partnering with Jen Opheim – owner, grower and floral designer at Bloom Flower Farm – to host a Holiday Table Garland workshop Thursday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m., at the Pulpit Rock Brewing Company event space. Participants will craft beautiful fall-inspired table garland
using live seeded eucalyptus, magnolia leaves and dried grasses. Opheim will not only guide attendees in creating a simple-yet-elegant garland, but will also share how to personalize and enhance the garland at home. Space for this workshop is limited, and pre-registration is

German American Museum presentation Nov. 15
James Griesheimer, Professor Emeritus from Luther College, will present “Bach as the Great German Music Synthesizer” on Wednesday evening, Nov. 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the German American Museum in St. Lucas. Jim has a lifelong passion for Bach’s stellar contributions to the world of classical music. Professor Griesheimer studied music at Ohio State, Arizona State and Indiana University. He was a principal oboist and played in symphony orchestras in Chicago, Phoenix, El Paso, Pittsburgh, Dubuque and Rochester. He taught music at New Mexico State University, Middlebury College and most recently at Luther College. He received a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Germany from 1973 to 1975. Jim is a much loved professor at Luther College. He is known for his brilliant mind, his wit and for his absolute passion for music and music history as noted by Jeanette Dietzenbach, historical society member, who was privileged to take some of his classes. In 2010, he was ordained as an Episcopal priest and serves congregations in Decorah and Charles City. Clair Blong, president of the St., Lucas Historical Society, reminds everyone this is the final lecture of the season. Refreshments will be served at the event.

Following an overnight observation period, Berg was able to take Tara home the next day. The rambunctious schnauzer had to lay low for about six weeks, per doctor’s orders, but once the convalescence period

was over, Tara was back to her old self but with more pep than before the surgery. “It’s pretty much like a pacemaker for humans,” Berg said. “You can feel the lump where the pacemaker is when you pet her.” Berg pointed out he cannot use a neck collar on Tara anymore and must use a halter instead. Folks in the Harmony community have come to know Tara during the past decade, as Berg takes his grey and white pooch for daily walks, including to the

downtown the post office. Many more have come to know about Tara, as Medtronic published a feature story on their website, and “People Magazine” also did a feature story for their online edition. Tara has had one checkup in May since the March surgery and received high marks. She will have to undergo checkups every six months to ensure the miniature device is sending the proper signals to the miniature schnauzer.

UI Documentary Workshop shaping next wave of documentary filmmakers Decorah’s Jenna Galligan part of successful team Jenna Galligan of Decorah, a student at the University of Iowa majoring in Cinema, is one of many UI students who have successfully taken what they have learned in the classroom and applied it against real life as participants in the Daily Iowan Documentary Workshop at UI. The workshop allows student filmmakers and photographers to work alongside seasoned professionals behind the camera in the field and in the editing studio. Galligan fell in love with documentaries at the Oneota Film Festival in her hometown of Decorah, which she attended every year with her dad. She chose the University of Iowa in large part due to its film program. Even though she was excited to actively engage in visual storytelling, she admits that she expected much of her college experience would consist of sit-

COVID-19 impact When the idea of the Daily Iowan Documentary Workshop was conceived in fall 2019, Wilcox Frazier thought it would take several years to develop a curriculum, renovate a studio and fundraise before any filming would actually begin…but then COVID-19 hit. “I thought it was a brilliant idea,” Wilcox Frazier said. “COVID was a complete disruption to all our lives, but we had a job to do. We had a role to play within our community. And that role just kept intensifying through news events that happened the year we made this film. These students covered it all.” The workshop students traveled across the country following 10 new UI alumni from May 2020 to May 2021. Before they could get to work editing the film, the workshop received permission to film the Iowa wrestling program’s 2021-22 season. The unprecedented access included every team gathering,
practice, dual meet and tournament. Learning new skills and building close bonds Galligan said she is grateful for the chance to improve her communication skills. “We’ve all done a lot of work in terms of synthesizing our workflow in the way that we communicate with each other,” said Galligan, who also stayed on campus after graduating to finish the films. “And I’m still working on it, but being able to practice that with people who care about me and people whom I care about has been a real treat and a joy.” Throughout the making of the two films, the workshop participants developed a close bond. Paving the way for future visual storytelling “The Daily Iowan Documentary Workshop is our new endeavor, and it makes so much sense for us,” Brummond said. “The importance of good local journalism and multimedia storytelling has not changed over the decades, but how news and stories are told is constantly changing.”

Its first film, “Chasing Greatness: Wrestling Life” premiered in March on the Big Ten Network. Galligan worked on both films, serving as an assistant director and editor on “Chasing Greatness” and director and editor of “Lost in the In-Between.” “The goal of this workshop is to train directors, so the students are involved in all aspects of the process,” said Danny Wilcox Frazier, a documentary photographer and filmmaker who serves as the workshop’s

ATV/UTV ride raises funds The Second Annual LA Communications ATV/ UTV Fall ride, October 14, raised $18,000 for two local charities. The Allamakee County Fair Association and Northeast Iowa Community Action each received $9,000 to help make improvements and improve the welfare of local families. Spillville, Fidelity Bank in Calmar and Ossian, and Luana Savings Bank in Ossian. Items to donate should be in good or new condition, and include: hats, coats, gloves/mittens, scarves, boots and snow pants. Collected items will be given to John Cline, Carrie Lee, South Winneshiek Schools and
Head Start so they have a substantial extra winter clothes supply on hand for students in need. Collected items may also be available for families at area free meals. Editor’s note: This spooky story submission was the victim of a slashing, and its ending was cut off in a previous issue! Luckily, we were able to piece it all back together for this redux. By Katie Pickett, Preston, MN Youth Fiction SECOND PLACE After staying up past the late evening hours and into the early morning, I decide it’s high time to turn in. I move my snoozing cat off my lap, unfortunately waking her up in the process. She stretches a little before facing the window straight across the room. Staring directly at the window, she seems alert— like she sees something I don’t. But after half a minute, she yawns, licks her lips, and saunters away. Strange, but weirder things have happened in this house. Rising and turning, I pace across the living room to the light switches. I flick on the light shining above the top of the stairway, but nothing happens. I flick it twice more with the same results. I sigh. I grew up hating the darkness. My imagination runs rampant whenever I look into the shadowy recesses of my closet; I make out mysterious faces in the dingy corners of the attic. I have to remind myself that it’s all in my head—I’m being irrational again. I take a deep breath, ready to make my way up the fifteen
creaky, carpeted steps to my bedroom. I turn off the living room light, letting the darkness surround me. One. My foot hits the step, and my mind immediately starts racing. It’s so dark behind me. Two. My other leg mechanically moves up to the second step. I turn to look, and the darkness returns my stare. All I see is the red, glowing light below the powered-down TV screen. I return to my ascent up the steps. Three. Am I sure it was a light? It could possibly be the illuminated eyes of a creature. My mind starts conjuring dark, organic forms. If I focus hard enough, that rectangle sort of looks like a torso. Four. Two legs sprout from the bottom of the body. Six long arms emerge from the sides. A deformed, oblong head rises from the top. Five. I see mucus coating its epidermis. It makes me shiver. Six. It’s holding an object in its hand. Leather scraps serve as clothes. Seven. Its eyes. Glowing red pupils,
piercing into my skull. Eight. That object looks sharp. My pulse quickens. Nine. I can hear footsteps. Is the demon drawing near? Ten. My steps quicken. Eleven. I hear heavy breathing, quickly becoming louder. Twelve. I can see it readying its weapon. Thirteen. A hatchet, raised over my head. My body tenses. Fourteen. I utter a prayer. I hold my breath. Fifteen. I finally reach the top. I sprint to the door near the end of the hall. The footsteps behind me match my pace. They are heavy and loud. Hastily arriving inside my room, I turn and slam my door. Safe. I press my back against the wood. Eupnea returns. Safety at last, no harm can come. I have survived another night. But as I lie in bed writing this, my thoughts are filled by the faint scratching and labored breathing coming from outside my bedroom door.

Three events from Decorah High School wasn’t able to garner any points at the 2023 state swim meet over the weekend in Marshalltown; however, the swimmers did improve on their times. Waukee won the team title with 381 points while Dowling Catholic was a distant second with 241.5 points. The Viking 200-yard medley relay entered the state meet as the 32nd seed with a time of 1:58.08. At the end of Saturday’s race, Sydney Thompson, Avalea Burns, Bella Sailor and Liz Bucksa improved their time to 1:57.44, good for 29th overall.
Individually, Bucksa was in the water for two events. In the 50-yard freestyle prelims Friday night, the freshman posted a time of 25.41 seconds to finish 29th. Competing on the opposite end of the spectrum, Bucksa took 23rd in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:26.26. “I am proud of how we finished the season at state. Getting to state was one thing for this group, but we set the goal of competing at state,” said Coach Loran Storts. “We are a young, inexperienced team, so taking three sophomores and one freshman to state creates energy for seasons to come.”
One Team Day returns to support Norse athletes Luther College’s annual One Team Day returns Thursday, Nov. 16, for its fourth year to raise money to support Norse athletics. Donors can support the specific teams of their choice. Funds raised will provide critical operating support, such as advanced technologies for training and recovery, top-tier equipment and uniforms, and quality travel and training experiences. Gifts made on Nov. 16 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by more than $130,000 in matching funds pledged by One Team Day challenge sponsors. In 2022, Luther raised $310,000 from more than 1,100 donors on One Team Day. The day-long event also includes the first-ever One Team Day Celebration, which is free and open to the public at T-Bock’s upstairs from 5:307:30 p.m. The celebration includes complimentary appetizers and a cash bar. “Every year, the athletics department looks forward to One Team Day because of the outpouring of support for Norse Central Boiler

A host of South Winn football players were honored by being named all-district in Class A District 3. In total, five athletes were named first team, with two on second team and two honorable mention. First team defense South Winn’s leading tacklers — Brady Ohrt and Kyle Kuboushek — were named on the First Team Defense list for the 2023 season. Ohrt finished his senior campaign with a team-high 59.5 total tackles, including 42 solo stops and 1.5 tackles for a loss. He also had two interceptions with returns of 19 yards. He earned an honorable mention nod a year ago. With 57 total stops, Kuboushek was second on the tackle charts behind Ohrt to earn his first nod as a sophomore. Among those, 36 were solo tackles — 12.5 for a loss and one sack. First team offense Parker Timp and Tristen Bodensteiner were named to the First Team for their work on the offensive line, a unit which helped the Warriors garner 2,414 total yards of offense and score 21 touchdowns during the 2023 season. It marks Timp’s third time on the All-District list, including a first team honor last year for his defensive efforts. The senior started the season as one of South Winn’s running backs, scoring three touchdowns and running the pigskin 53 times for 224 yards for the season. For Bodensteiner, a junior, it is his first district nod. Joining the duo on the first team offense list is Carson Streeter, who led the Warriors in receiving yards with 278 in his 24 receptions. The sophomore also was named as the first team kicker with 33 kick-offs for 1,653 yards, including a trio of touchbacks. He was 3-for-6 in field goals and had 12 PATs. In addition, he had 20 punts for 673 yards en route to his first nod on the all-district team.

Honorable mention Two Warriors were named to the honorable mention list — Eric Kriener and Nolan Sabelka. Kriener, a senior, contributed 18 tackles during the season with 11 solo stops, three sacks and six tackles for a loss. He also pulled down one reception for 12 yards for his inaugural all-district nod. As one of South Winn’s running backs, Sabelka scrambled for 317 yards in his 41 carries and scored twice. The junior was also there for 20 total tackles with 16 solo stops for his first all-district honor. Ossian’s holiday decorating contest
continued from front Closer to home, Gaard’s achievements span the gamut. He has served on numerous boards and committees and has interwoven himself into the Driftless military veteran community. As a former Pentagon officer, Gaard, with Carol, has locally donated flags that have flown over the Pentagon, with one flying at the Veteran’s Memorial in town and a second flag flying at WinnMed. In addition to him serving on WinnMed’s Foundation Board of Directors, Gaard and Carol were large contributors to the Winneshiek County Veterans Memorial and the new picnic shelter erected at Mary Christopher Park. Over and above that, they set up an endowment for WinnMed’s American Flag Program as well as a family fund with the Winneshiek County Community Foundation. Gaard, now fully retired from teaching, coaching and military service, currently volunteers as an Iowa advisor for West Point Academy candidates and was reappointed earlier this year to his fourth year as one of 12 members chosen nationally to serve on the Veterans Affairs Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans’ illnesses.
Get to know your neighbor: Do you have a nickname? “Boomer” is my nickname. When I first came to Decorah, I went pheasant hunting. I had just gotten back from Army basic training, and I purchased a new shot gun and I wanted to try it out. A few teacher friends and I got together to go pheasant hunting, and Mike Fitzgerald was in the group. Mike said, “You better try that shotgun out!” So, he and I go over to the side of a ditch, and I shot it — boom boom boom boom! The other guys didn’t know I was shooting it. They hit the ground, not knowing what was going on! After that, they started calling me “Boomer” and it has stuck. What are you most known for? Hmmmm, gosh, I don’t know! I guess partly maybe for my involvement in the community with various organizations. I am on the Parks and Recreation Board, the First Lutheran Church Council and the WinnMed Hospital Foundation. I just wrapped up my time on the board for the Community Foundation for Northeast Iowa. High school coach? Liaison for West Point Academy? I think I am most known for my community involvement and having been a teacher — Teaching in the public school system, you are kind of well known, good or bad! Coaching different groups of kids! I like being involved with those things and meeting people and talking with people. Hobbies? I like biking and walking, golfing, of course! Tennis and pickle ball. I really like to travel. I have two grandkids: a twoyear-old and a six-year-old. That’s a job! What do you like most about living in the Driftless? Golly! We’ve lived here a long time! Carol and I like the activities that are available here. We like the people and the lifestyle. We came here for the schools too. I am from Waverly and went to Wartburg, but I wanted to move to a town that
also had a college — a college adds a lot to a community. We love our neighborhood; how close our house is to everything in town. Favorite locations around town: My favorite restaurant … Twin Springs Supper Club! My wife likes salmon, and I order steak or salmon. That chocolate dessert is so good! I do like Rubaiyat and I love Toppling Goliath. I am not a beer drinker, but I love their variety of foods! My favorite park is Mary Christopher Park, with the beautiful VA memorial. Carol and I, along with Perry and Wendy Novak, donated to the shelter there. There is a picture of us in the shelter that tells the story. The flag at the memorial flew over the Pentagon; I contributed the flag to the memorial. I have made it so there will always be an American flag flying at the memorial in honor of all the veterans of Winneshiek County and northeast Iowa. At the hospital, near the entryway where you check in, that flag flew over the Pentagon too.

The City of Ossian and Ossian Crown Club are holding an outside Holiday Decorating Contest for homes and businesses in and around Ossian. There are no complex rules or requirements. “Just decorate the front of your home or the outside of your business or your store window,” said organizer Clark Goltz. “The response to the fall decorating contest was amazing.” Goltz said the theme for the Holiday Decorating Contest is “Holiday Decorating”. Favorite human being? Besides Carol? General Peter Pace. I worked under General Pace for two years when I was at the Pentagon. His leadership skills and demeanor really impressed me. He challenged me when I retired from the Pentagon, “Rich, go out and try to help the veterans as much as you can,” so I have been trying to do that — with flags, with committees, with volunteer programs. I am hoping to give back as much as I can, nationally and locally.”

What is your hidden talent? I’m still trying to find it! I enjoy talking to people. I talked to a random guy earlier today at the bicycle store, and it turns out he’s from Waverly! One of my strengths is if I don’t know something, I will find someone who does. You should always surround yourself with good people. It’s possible that one could not swing a golf club in Decorah without hitting someone who knows Gaard or has benefited from one of his many contributions. But knowing all he has done and the numerous lives he has touched throughout his life, it’s doubtful.
