hen Matt Cahalan moved from Decorah to Ridgeway in 2015, he had no idea his future bride worked less than a block away from him. Matt moved in with good friend and schoolmate, Chris Zidlicky, and joined by fellow friends, they went out to local hangouts, drank beer, enjoyed Friday and Saturday night dirt track races and the like. One rainy Friday night the races were cancelled, and Matt and Chris settled on staying close to home and chose to grab a beer at The Fireman’s Inn, Ridgeway’s answer to pub fare and libations. Unbeknownst to him, this was a night that would change Matt’s life forever. “I walked into Fireman’s, and as soon as I saw her, I said to myself, ‘that girl’,” Matt emphasized. “I asked Chris, ‘Who’s that girl back there making pizzas?’ And Chris said, ‘Oh, don’t worry about her! You’ll never get her!” “That girl” was Cresco native, 19-year-old Abby Panoch, who had been working at Fireman’s since she was 16. Super-shy Matt didn’t talk to her that night, or for weeks afterward. Finally, after several months of thinking about Abby and wanting to reach out to her, Matt messaged her on Facebook. “It took some liquid courage!” he laughed, recalling how hard it was to compose a simple “Hello” to send to Abby. Abby, who had never paid any attention to Matt before then, began conversing with him via messenger, and with several friends in common, they all began hanging out together on weekends. Abby was “one of the gang” as they

A toast to Kanpai New soda shop debuts in Decorah By Roz Weis Kanpai Soda Shop made its debut on Water Street in downtown Decorah last month. Owners Lori and Kevin Gossling, of the Calmar/Spillville area, opened the business in January with a “soft opening”. The manager at Kanpai is their son, Chad Gossling, who revealed that the name means “cheers” in Japanese. Located at 404 West Water Street (in the familiar building with the rock façade), Kanpai’s menu includes scores of bottled and canned craft sodas, local Spring Grove pop, a wide variety of teas, coffee, snacks and root beer on tap. Some of Gossling’s favorites are the Ramune, a Japanese soda, and Sprecher’s brand sodas from Milwaukee, Wis.

Ossian City Council approves first reading of Family Astronomy Night at the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre SOO Green franchise agreement ordinance By Zach Jensen The SOO Green project is moving full steam ahead, thanks in part to a recent public hearing in Ossian. The project, which consists of the construction of a first-of itskind high-voltage direct-current interregional underground transmission line, will run from Mason City to Chicago and is slated to travel alongside existing railroad lines — traveling through northeast Iowa. “The SOO Green HVDC Link is a first-of-its-kind electricity transmission project that will install state-of-theart high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission cable underground along existing railroad corridors,” says information at soogreen.com. “SOO
Green is pioneering an innovative model for developing transmission infrastructure to deliver renewable energy long distances to customers across the eastern U.S. that virtually eliminates the visual, land and environmental impact of aboveground transmission lines. SOO Green will enable the development of new, low-cost renewable energy resources while enhancing the power grid’s reliability and resilience.” Prior to Ossian’s public hearing on the project, Winneshiek Energy District Director Andy Johnson said that although the energy district isn’t directly involved with SOO Green, he’s very excited about it — as all northeast Iowans should be. “A major rebuild and expansion of transmission is neces-
sary for the nation’s power grid to evolve and meet needs this century,” Johnson said. “This is often discussed in the context of the need to move energy from new wind and solar farms to population centers, and that’s important, but transmission improvements are also necessary thanks to changes to electricity consumption, like the growth of electric vehicles and heat pumps in buildings.” Johnson said that not only will the project be a major improvement, but it will also have economic benefits for the region. “Bottom line, this transmission project is a major improvement to the reliability of Iowa’s grid, and can move a massive amount of energy with no overhead wires and no eminent domain in the county,”
Johnson said. “Local residents get a stronger grid while eastern power consumers will largely be footing the bill.” Prior to Ossian’s public hearing, Johnson corresponded with Kenzie Geiger of the LS2 Group, which provides public relations services for the SOO Green project. Geiger said, “SOO Green will generate real property tax revenue for the jurisdictions it crosses.” Projected tax revenues in Winneshiek County and Ossian over the first 25 years of the franchise are: • Winneshiek County (all taxing districts): more than $4.9 Million
The Driftless Area Wetlands Centre is hosting Family Astronomy Night Friday, Feb. 16, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Planetarium programs will run every 30 minutes throughout the evening. The event is hosted by MFL MarMac science teachers, volunteers from the Starsplitters of Wyalusing, local science enthusiasts and the Friends of the Marquette Driftless Area. Postville’s Enyart gives 62 ‘bear and book’ sets to area hospitals
Postville’s Monica Enyart, a brand representative of PaperPie which distributes books nationwide, recently organized a Cuddle Bear drive to give back to her community. As part of the drive, plush Cuddle Bear and book sets were given to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon and WinnMed in Decorah for their young patients. With the help of numerous community members who sponsored these sets, Enyart was able to give 31 bear and book sets to each hospital. “Living in the Postville area, we are blessed to have so many options for hospitals so close to home,” Enyart said. “Everyone needs a hug sometimes. Each set helps end childhood cancer too as a portion of the proceeds goes to cancer research.” (submitted)
The Waukon Chamber of Commerce will launch its 2024 Event Series this weekend, Feb. 16-17, with the Cupid Shuffle event highlighting local dining establishments and encouraging folks to get out and patronize Waukon’s businesses and community amenities. Those participating in the Cupid Shuffle should visit three different locations in Waukon to grab a drink, have a meal and do an activity. Ukraine fundraiser to feature traditional Ukrainian fare To mark the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, The Landing Market of Decorah will again host a fundraiser to help provide humanitarian relief to people in areas ravaged by war. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and will feature a meal of traditional Ukrainian fare and a silent auction. The meal will feature beef, pork and rice cabbage rolls called holubtsi (“little doves”), black bread and bilochka (“little squirrel”), a type of cheese and garlic spread. A vegetarian option (rice, carrots and onions) will also be available. Ukrainian native and Luther College Professor of Anthropology Maryna B. Nading, her husband Scott, and close friends will prepare the meal. There is a cost for this event. However, all proceeds from the event will benefit volunteer groups in Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine (Nading’s hometown), who deliver medicine, protective gear and food to the frontlines. Matt Sweeney Memorial Ride makes Kasemeier to be extradited back to donation to Veterans Memorial Hospital EMS
Members of the Matt Sweeney Memorial Ride committee recently made a donation to the Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation for the Emergency Medical Services Department at Veterans Memorial Hospital. These funds were raised at the Matt Sweeney Memorial Ride held Aug. 6, 2023. Paramedic and EMS Manager Jacob Dougherty shared his appreciation of these funds by stating, “These funds received by our group of dedicated EMS providers here at Veterans Memorial Hospital will be carefully utilized in a meaningful way in a goal of enhancing the services we provide our community.” Donations were also given to the Ronald McDonald House charities and local individu-

Accused murderer Brandon Kasemeier will be extradited back to Allamakee County within the next few weeks to face trial for the Jan. 22 murder of his wife, Jami Kasemeier. Kasemeier, represented by Larimer County public defender Matt Mulch, made his second appearance Friday, Feb. 9, in a Larimer County, Colo., virtual courtroom presided by Judge Stephen Jouard. Jouard reviewed Kasemeier’s pending fugitive warrant for the offense of homicide and signed Kasemeier’s waiver of extradition, making the extradition order official. Jouard then set a status hearing for Friday, March 8, 11 a.m., at which time the judge will follow up and determine if Kasemeier has been transported.
Lansing bridge construction to slow traffic on Front Street Drivers who travel Front Street in Lansing should be aware of an upcoming road closure that may slow traffic down. Beginning on Friday morning, Feb. 16, weather permitting, crews will close Front Street between Henry and Hale streets to start work on Pier 1
for the Mississippi River Bridge at Lansing replacement project. Front Street will be closed through fall 2024. The next anticipated closure of Front Street will be from fall 2025 through summer 2027. For more information about the Mississippi River Bridge at

Crop production estimates available for 2024 growing season Farmers can estimate the cost of producing various crops in 2024 by using data published in the January edition of Ag Decision Maker. The article “Estimated Costs of Crop Production” includes average production costs for corn, corn silage, soybeans, alfalfa and pasture maintenance. Decision tools are also available that allow farmers to enter their own numbers, so they can estimate production costs on their own farm. Production costs are always important to know in advance of planting season, but even more so as the crop market heads into a period of tighter profit margins. “The economic outlook for 2024 is somewhat of a return to normal, where prices are roughly in line with production costs and profits can be captured sporadically throughout the year,” said Alejandro Plastina, associate professor in economics and economist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Plastina said the report shows a five-to-seven percent decline in the cost of corn and soybean production, driven by lower input costs compared to 2023. Land cost is projected to be stable, with increases in labor and machinery costs. The report provides estimates for specific crop rotations, including corn following corn, corn following soybeans and corn following silage. The re-
port lists specific costs commonly associated with each crop, including seed, fertilizer, machinery use and labor. Machinery costs reflect both new and used equipment, and are up 23 percent, based on the increase from 2020 to 2022, reported by the USDA Economic Research Service. Due to differences in soil condition, the quantity of inputs used and other factors, production costs will ultimately vary from farm to farm, said Plastina. Labor is treated as a fixed cost in the report, because most labor on Iowa farms is supplied by the operator, family or permanent hired labor. Starting in 2023, projected land costs used in the report are based on a survey of Iowa State Farm Management Team members. Historical estimates of Iowa crop production are also available in the Ag Decision Maker, dating back to 2000. Farm bill decisions Other important tools are also available in the January Ag Decision Maker, including decision tools to help farmers select the appropriate farm bill program. Options include Price Loss Coverage and Agricultural Risk Coverage, with options for individual farm coverage or county-level coverage. The tools help farmers analyze and select the best option for their own operation.

Since Kasemeier waived extradition, he can now be picked up by Iowa law enforcement and transported back to Iowa. According to Allamakee County Sheriff Clark Mellick, there are multiple options for transportation. “Law enforcement from our agency can drive and pick him up and drive him back to Allamakee County,” Mellick explained. “There are also transport companies that work with departments, and they send transport officers to pick up a prisoner. With this case, we have the ability to use the U.S. Marshall service if we need to.”
Mellick elaborated, explaining that extradition is usually done by ground transportation, depending on the distance between states and the circumstance of the prisoner’s arrest. “Since (Kasemeier’s) extradition has been finalized, we can start working to make arrangements to bring him back to Allamakee County,” Mellick summarized. Upon his return to Allamakee County, he will face the charge of first degree murder. While awaiting extradition, Kasemeier remains behind bars at the Fort Collins Justice Center in Fort Collins, Colo.

Originally planning for an outdoor wedding on the banks of the Turkey River, outside of the Inwood Ballroom, Abby and Matt decided to move the ceremony inside and were married in the ballroom in front of family and friends. ding dress. “It was the fifth dress I tried on, and it had pockets — that sold me! It was perfect!” recalled Abby. “Julie Vulk did the tailoring for my dress, and it fit beautifully!” Vulk crafted a heart-shaped-swatch from a blue handkerchief owned by Abby’s grandfather, Eddie Dotzler, who passed away in 2006. The blue heart was sewn into the hem of Abby’s wedding dress and served as the bride’s “Something Blue.” Matt and his groomsmen went to Leutholds for their head-to-toe attire, and Abby created personalized hats for each of the men to wear. The Inwood Ballroom in Spillville was a definite for their reception, since that was where Abby’s dad, Lee, and mom, Michelle, had their wedding reception in 1993. Michelle is one of 18 children, and Lee is one of 10 children. Matt’s family is smaller but still substantial, so they knew they would need a larger venue for the 350+ family members and friends who would be in attendance. Matt crafted wooden lantern centerpieces and a pallet photo backdrop, and the couple, along with several friends, collected stems and bunches of pampas

Abby’s flowers, corsages and boutonnieres were made by Flowers on the Farm in Waukon, and the bridal party enjoyed makeup and hair completed by The Hair Company in Cresco. When the week of the wedding arrived, the weather was cold and rainy, nixing any outdoor wedding possibilities. The wedding was moved inside the Inwood, where spirits were not dampened by the rain. Abby’s uncle, Kevin Weselmann of Decorah, presided over the ceremony, and after exchanging vows, the couple kissed for the first time as Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Cahalan. Everyone snacked on charcuterie cups created by Plum Delicious and assorted popcorn from Pinters Gardens in Decorah. Dinner was a rack of pork and swiss chicken, with potatoes, green beans, and Caesar salad, all provided by U2 BBQ, followed by assorted cakes by Norske. The two-tiered wedding cake was comprised of classic cheesecake and sponge cake, strawberry sauce, and

white chocolate ganache icing and handpainted decorations by Plum Delicious. Day became night as the bride and groom danced with family and friends to music provided by Thoroughbred DJ, and wedding-goers celebrated the union by enjoying a late night personal fireworks show and devouring slices of assorted pizzas made and delivered by The Fort in Fort Atkinson. Looking back at their special day, Abby grinned as she lamented, “You do all this planning, then you blink and it’s over! It went by way too fast! It was a perfect day.” Matt added, “It was such a good time, especially marrying her! I couldn’t stop smiling all day.”

A fairytale all their own By Jennifer Bissell It’s a love story with a rich history for newlyweds Ryan and Brigid (Berns) Whalen of Waukon. The two have known each other since they were children, spending time together as family friends. It wasn’t until they started college that their love bloomed. After a picture-perfect engagement, the two were married in front of family and friends on Sept. 16, 2023. Falling for each other Brigid and Ryan have known each other their entire lives. Their parents, Brad and Erin (Mooney) Berns and Paul and Gail Whalen, were friends growing up. As children, Brigid and
Ryan often got together while their parents spent time together. Once they were in school, Brigid said the families didn’t see each other as often. All that changed after high school. Brigid graduated from Waukon High School in 2019 and attended Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wis., for nursing. She currently works at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon as a registered OB and medical surgical nurse. Ryan graduated from Kee High School in 2019 and attended Western Technical College in La Crosse for the HVAC technician program. He currently works for Winona Controls in Caledonia, Minn.

Berns/Whalen continued from page 9 Brigid said they began spending more time together once they were in La Crosse and eventually started dating. On Easter Sunday, April 15, 2022, Ryan and Brigid were spending the day at Brigid’s mom’s family farm in Harpers Ferry. They wanted to take a family photo in front of “The Old Rock House”, built in 1853 by Brigid’s relatives. That was when Ryan got down on one knee. “It was an easy yes,” said Brigid. “We then went on to have our first look on our wedding day in that very spot.” A wedding for ‘them’ Wedding planning came easy for Brigid and Ryan. They went with a rustic theme, utilizing dusty rose, maroon, navy and blushing pink. They chose St. Patrick’s Church in Waukon for the ceremony site, with the reception at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion. Father John Moser officiated the ceremony. Brenna Berns served as the maid of honor, with Kaylee Horsman, Maria Miller, Emma Franks, Brooke Berns, Gillian Anderson and Makayla Manning as the bridesmaids. Morgan Van Ruler, Megan O’Neill-Monroe and Emily Steele were personal attendants. On the Blue Crew were Gabbi Marti and Kaia O’Neill. Evan Whalen was the best man. Groomsmen were Brock Berns, Bubba Rud, Jack Mooney, Michael Headington, Sean Liddiard and Pat Mahr. Ushers were Tyler O’Neill and Jacob Berns. The Whalens got their rings from Elliott Jewelers in Waukon, with other accessories from Marti & Co. of Cresco. Flowers on the Farm from rural Waukon provided the flowers. Decor came from BD Productions. The bridal party turned to Gemini Salon and Spa, Luna Salon and Lisa Regan, Waukon, for hairstyling, while Emily Dahlstrom of Gemini Salon did their make-up. Brigid purchased her bridal dress from Charlotte’s Bridal & Formal Wear of La Crosse. She chose a romantic yet elegant dress, with lots of sparkles, a long traditional train and a cathedral veil, perfect for the traditional church wedding. The bridesmaids’ dresses were purchased online at azazie. com. The groom’s and groomsmen attire came from Teslows Formalwear of Waukon. Their seamstress was Mary Ann Kelly. vided the music during the ceremony and Steven Hill was the DJ. Be Catered of Waukon served the meal, with the cake coming from Quillins of Waukon. For a wedding favor, the Whalens provided homegrown pumpkins from the family farm. Planning the wedding, Brigid said they wanted to make it all about their family and friends enjoying their day. “We wanted our day to be intentional. We gave all of our most important family and friends special jobs and included as many as possible. I sang a song, as Ryan walked my parents down the aisle, that my mom and I used to sing together at weddings. ‘Mama’s Song’ by Carrie Underwood has beautiful lyrics for a wedding day,” she said. “The main diamond in my ring is actually my grandmother’s diamond from her

The Whalen wedding party was transported by the Berns Family Farms wagon. wedding ring from my grandpa Mooney. The rosary around my bouquet is a family heirloom on my Berns side and has been used at many family weddings. I have grown up going to St. Patrick’s Church in Waukon and always imagined getting married in the old, beautiful, traditional church. It was truly magical.” Those special touches continued to the reception. “Ryan and I did a grandparents’ dance after the other traditional dances. He danced with my grandma and I danced with his grandpa because they are so special to us. They are the only grandparents we have left, so the dance was a tribute to our
grandparents and other family members who have passed.” Seeing a room full of their loved ones was what made the day unique. “My favorite part was sitting at our reception and looking over all the people and feeling so grateful and joyful. All the people in the room loved and supported us. They were all there to support our marriage and celebrate us. That was truly so special and I have never felt more loved,” said Brigid. “Ryan’s favorite part of the day was dancing the night away with all our favorite people.” Love and support Since their wedding, the

Whalens have settled into married life and have moved into their home in Waukon, which they remodeled themselves. Looking back on the big day, Brigid said she’s thankful that they made the decisions they did to celebrate how they wanted. “I remember the feeling of everyone being there to support us. Just knowing everyone drove from all over just to spend the day with us and celebrate with us. It was such a blessing and so special to us,” she said. “Ryan kept looking at me throughout the day and saying ‘this is such a fairytale.’ He was so right, it was just truly our best day ever.”

Winneshiek Co. to be wellrepresented at state meet The big stage at Wells Fargo Arena will see 12 wrestlers from Winneshiek County vying for a state title. When all was said and done Saturday, the Decorah boys’ wrestling team had qualified seven for the state meet tying for the most ever to represent the Vikings in Des Moines, while South Winn fans saw five earn state bids. Next up, the opportunity to wrestle in front of the crowds at the state wrestling tournament, which runs Wednesday, Feb. 14 through Saturday, Feb. 17, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Record-tying Vikes Mason Avila and Tommy Sexton won district titles while

It was a second major decision for the sophomore in the finals as he punched his second straight ticket to the state tournament by a 14-4 decision over Independence’s Kameron Kremer. Another sophomore, No. 7 Tommy Sexton collected a 17-2 tech fall over Landon Duffy of Independence in 4:07 to win the quarterfinal round. Then it was on to the semifinals where he did battle with No. 11 Johnathan Edel of East Marshall/ GMG, winning 7-0. Sexton claimed victory at 190 pounds and his first trip to state in the finals 6-3 over Cael Burmester of Hampton-Dumont-CAL. Throughout the season, the third-ranked Holm and Denver’s second-ranked Boden White had each defeated each other once and the rubber match came in the finals at 144 pounds with White escaping with a 3-1 victory. Forced into a wrestle back position, Holm didn’t take long to throw Don Bosco’s Aiden Hellman, winning in 1:01. At 150 pounds, Landen Schnuelle had a battle to punch his ticket. The sophomore threw Wesly Brandt of Tripoli in 3:25 to open the day in the quarterfinals, then pinned Blake Taylor of Hudson in 3:51 in the semifinals. In the championship bout, Schnuelle couldn’t get on the offensive as he fell by 11-2 major decision to No. 10 Easton Krall of Wapsie Valley. Needing a win in the wrestle back, Schnuelle was on target against Ty Christensen of Don Bosco, winning by a 7-0 decision. No. 11 Kyle Kuboushek will make his second trip to the big stage, qualifying at 165 pounds. The sophomore began his quest with a fall in 2:43 over Springville’s Ryker Waggoner. Then in a match for the ages, Kuboushek squared off with 10th-ranked Garrett Miller of Wapsie Valley, escaping with the victory in overtime 3-1. Don Bosco’s third-ranked Andrew Kimball got Kuboushek turned in 25 seconds in the final; however, with the Warriors’ win over Miller in the semifinal Kuboushek took second without a wrestle back. For the second time in his career, senior Parker Timp will see action on the mats at state. He punched a ticket with a fall in the semifinal against Donavon Farrell of Denver in 3:30. No. 5 Kyler Sallis of Don Bosco got Timp on his back in 2:43 in the finals, but Farrell’s third-place win gave Timp outright second without a need for a wrestle back.

Decorah grabs share of NEIC title with 79-76 win A year after going 6-4 in the Northeast Iowa Conference, the No. 5 Decorah boys’ basketball team (18-2) is back on top with a share of the league title, finishing 9-1 with No. 3 Waverly-Shell Rock (16-3, 9-1) after Friday’s 79-76 come-from-behind win. “I am proud of our guys for staying poised after getting down early in the game,” said Coach Jonathan Carlson. “The guys kept fighting and they were rewarded. These games are why you play, great atmosphere, conference title on the line. We need to stay hungry and humble, as we will continue to get everyone’s best shot.” Giving up 21 points to the Go-
Hawks and trailing by seven in the first, the Vikes battled back to within one by halftime, making it 39-38. A surge in scoring in the third period, opened up a 58-53 lead for Decorah. Down the stretch it was free throws making the difference as the Vikes got revenge on their loss to the Go-Hawks from January, 79-76. Six Vikings were in double figures. Trey McCain and Ben Bockman had the hot hands with 15 points apiece, while Matthew Bockman and Cael LaFrentz each put up 12 points. Contributing 10 points apiece were Kaiden Quandahl and Zachary Driscoll. Decorah has one final game

Wenthold breaks single season record for threes It was a defensive battle Saturday night in a game where a Warrior team was guaranteed to win as the South Winn girls’ basketball team played its first regional game at Wapsie Valley, but it took overtime. After the two squads finished regulation tied 35-35, South Winn (7-15) rallied to win 47-43. Wapsie Valley ends the year 8-12, while South Winn advances to play Aplington-Parkersburg (17-4) in the Class 2A Region 1 quarterfinals Tuesday, Feb. 13, in Aplington at 7 p.m. “It was a fun playoff atmosphere at Wapsie Valley. We played extremely hard and our efforts on the defensive side of the ball were phenomenal. Offensively, I thought we played well. Wapsie Valley’s length gave us some troubles with that zone defense but we kept grinding through it,” said Coach Justin Izer. “I also want to congratulate Karissa Wenthold for setting the school record for most three-pointers made in a single season.” Wapsie Valley was off to a quick start with a shot and one free throw to lead 3-0 and a full-court press forced South Winn to immediately turn the
ball over. The visiting Warriors quickly recovered and went on a 7-0 run that began with a Karissa Wenthold long ball to give South Winn a 9-5 lead after the first eight minutes. Loleta Ryan pumped up the SW crowd with an offensive rebound and putback a minute into the second. Then it was Wapsie Valley rallying on a 6-3 in the remaining seven points, giving SW a 14-11 halftime lead. Kicking off the third period Wenthold nailed a trey as SW looked to extend its lead; however, by the 4:53 mark Wapsie Valley had erased the gap and took the lead 18-17 and held on to finish the third ahead 24-22. The WV Warriors led by as many as six, before South Winn broke into the scoring column bringing the score back to within two, 30-28, with 4:10 to play. Aubrey Willey nailed a three above a WV double team just under a minute to put South Winn in the mix. Holthaus to the line with 26 seconds remaining, hitting one of two to tie it 3535. After a WV turnover, the Red and White had a chance to make the final shot with 15 ticks on the clock and came up empty

It was Wenthold again from beyond the arc to start overtime with WV answering to keep the score tied 38-38 with 2:50 to play. Willey had a chance to push SW out front again with a pair of free throws, making just one to put SW up by one. A floater by Wenthold added another two. With time ticking off Ella Theis free throws made it a two-possession game and eventually the win 47-43. Wenthold set a new team record by making five threes and tallied 19 points in the contest
to lead the Warriors. Theis had quite a game with 11 points and eight rebounds while Aubrey Willey was there for 10 boards. Loleta Ryan led the defense with seven steals. (Driftless Multimedia photo by Becky Walz) It wasn’t the end to the season the Trojan fans wanted to see as the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team fell at East Buchanan Thursday night 63-40 in the first round of regional play. The Bucs (15-7) advance to face Edgewood-Colesburg (174) Tuesday, Feb. 13, in the quarterfinals. Turkey Valley ends the year 7-15. “I am very proud of how the girls competed. They didn’t back down they handled East Bucs press well. This team grew a lot throughout the season and never backed down from any challenge that was given to them,” said Coach Steve Hoffert. The Trojans had everything going for them to start the game Thursday. They started with a 10-foot jumper by Addison Steinlage, shot by Haylee Hanson and a pair of free throws by Mariah Throndson to lead 6-2 four minutes into the game. The Bucs fired back in the second 4:00 minutes of the first as the teams left the floor tied 12-12 after the first quarter. The Red and White continued to put up a fight in the second, leading by three at the 4:52 mark before the Trojan offense stalled, allowing East Buchanan
to take a 24-21 lead with 2:56 left before the break. Back-toback buckets by Bella Stika and Steinlage put the Trojans right back in it at 25-25 with 1:27 to play; however, the Bucs connected for four free throws in the closing minute to lead 29-27 at halftime. Free throws were the name of the game in the third with teams combining for 12 trips to the charity stripe, with six of Turkey Valley’s 10 points coming from the free tosses, giving the home team a 45-7 lead with
eight minutes to play. All three of the Trojans points in the final period again game from the free throw line as East Buchanan rattled off shot-after-shot to pull away. Annika Bodensteiner led the Trojans with 10 points with Throndson putting up nine. Adding eight points was Steinlage while Hanson and Layni Schuchhardt contributed four apiece. Also on the board were Hazel Nieman with three and Bella Stika with two. The Trojans will lose Mariah Throndson to graduation, with a host of youngsters who gained valuable varsity experience this season.

Friday’s 66-52 loss on the road at Class 4A No. 2 Waverly-Shell Rock (21-0, 10-0 NEIC) made it just two in the NEIC for Decorah girls’ basketball team (14-7, 8-2 NEIC) as the Vikes finished second in the league. Keeping up with the GoHawks Decorah trailed 2320 after the first quarter. The Vikings’ offense grew quieter in the second, allowing W-SR to go ahead 40-31 at the break. The home team pushed ahead further in the third, extending their lead to 55-41 which was enough to secure the win as both teams put up 11 points in the final eight minutes. Yazmeen Whitsitt put up a game-high 30 points and nabbed three rebounds. Adding nine points was Sydney Thompson, while Claire Storhoff contributed eight points and five boards. The Vikes now turn their attention to a postseason run that begins with the Class 4A Region 2 quarterfinal against Charles City at home Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. A win would move Decorah into the semifinals at Western Dubuque against the Bobcats Saturday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. The regional final will be held Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the highest remaining ranked team’s home court at 7 p.m.

Four events had fans cheering for the Decorah boys’ swim team in Iowa City over the weekend as members competed in the state swim meet, posting season bests in all the events and improving on seedings. “I am proud of how the boys responded at the state meet,” said Coach Loran Storts. “Overall, it was a great finish to a great season. We had our largest team ever, we had a lot of new swimmers this season that will return next swimmer, the future looks bright for Decorah boys’ swim team.” Senior Isaac Knaack was the first Viking in the water Friday in the 100-yard backstroke prelims, finishing one second of his seed time in 54.82 seconds in 23rd place. In 47.92 seconds, it was Pleasant Valley senior Owen Chiles winning gold.
The 200-yard medley relay was the first in the water Saturday afternoon. Knaack, Mason Cote, Simon Kutz and Dylan Hogan combined for a time of 1:40.88 to finish 17th overall. Iowa City West posted the winning time of 1:30.31. In 1:29.67, the 200-yard free relay broke the school record with the same quartet, finishing 16th. Winning the event in 1:22.95 was Pleasant Valley. In 3:20.60, the foursome of Knaack, Dominc Bigalk, Cote and Kutz shaved off nearly four seconds of their seed time (3.24:53) and finished in 17th. Pleasant Valley won the event in 3:03.06. Decorah will graduate a strong contingent of Bigalk, Cote, Hogan, Knaack, Kutz and Nathaniel Roberts.

Brooke Anfinson
Brooke Anfinson is a senior member of the Decorah girls’ basketball team who is also involved in FFA and National Honor Society. Sidelined with an injury, Brooke has continued to be a mainstay on the Viking bench, supporting Decorah to an 8-1 conference record with one NEIC game remaining. “I commend Brooke for her incredible journey back to the varsity team after a seasonending injury,” said Decorah girls’ basketball coach Shannon Quandahl. “Her unselfishness, caring nature, dedication and resilience are truly inspiring and embody the spirit of our team.” Brooke is the daughter of Tim and Sarah Anfinson.
Gabbi Dixon
Gabbi Dixon is a member of the Decorah girls’ basketball. Off the court, the senior participates in swimming, soccer and National Honor Society. Through her 20 games played, Gabbi is averaging 5.5 points and 4.1 rebounds a game and has a total of 27 steals and 25 assists for the Vikings as they prepare to head into the postseason this week. “I want to the Gabbi for her dedication and commitment to our girls’ basketball program. Over the past four years, I have witnessed her personal growth in understanding that she can overcome challenges and take risks with resilience and perseverance,” said Decorah girls’ basketball coach Shannon Quandahl. Gabbi is the daughter of Troy and Chris Dixon.
Bo Wangsness
Bo Wangsness is a senior on the South Winn boys’ wrestling team who is also active in cross country, FFA and 4-H. With a 26-11 record, Bo was one of eight Warriors in the finals at the Upper Iowa Conference tournament in January with a runner-up finish at 126 pounds. “Bo has been having a great year as a senior as he continues to find ways to win big matches for us. He has been a great leader by example for this team and I couldn’t be happier for him,” said South Winn boys’ wrestling coach Jacob Elsbernd. “I have been lucky enough to be a part of Bo’s life since he was in middle school and as much as I love him as a wrestler, I love him much more as a person. He will continue to do amazing things long after he leaves our program.” Bo is the son of Ryan and Rebecca Wangsness.

Well, time to look through all the fear mongering and exaggerations and examine the facts surrounding the Republican Caucuses here in Winneshiek County. It was blowout by President Trump. Overall, he received 54% of the vote, 3 points better than the statewide total. In his three highest precincts he received 76%, 71%, and 69% of the total. Nikki Haley, regardless of laudatory media reports, won two precincts, DEW 3B and 5. This, however, exposed some of its own facts and malevolence by those that believe government to be our master. We had 98 people here in Winneshiek County, 13% of the total turnout, that changed parties the night of the caucus for one reason, to try and fraudulently affect the outcome. Why, because their candidate, Joe Biden, is seen more and more everyday as weak, ineffective, and mentally failing. From the border, to the economy, to almost four years now of wars, he has nothing to stand on.
More importantly, Donald Trump is the person standing in the way of implementing their agenda. The one repeated again two weeks ago at Davos, where the worlds intellectually elite flew in on their private jets, wined and dined each other on the most extravagant of foods, and then discuss philosophies on how to control the “proletariat” and keep them from destroying the world with their ignorant peasant ways. Well, it did not work and with Trump’s record win here in Iowa and now in New Hampshire, I hope the message is heard loud and clear that this is, as Vivek Ramaswamy often repeated, our 1776 moment and We the People will see that Liberty, Justice, and Equality triumphs again this time.
