what’s in a name ? ‘Ryan’ proves signiﬁcant for Madrigal family

Award-winning craftsman creates stringed instruments in Harmony By Charlie Warner There’s music being created in one of the two-story shops on the east side of Main Street in downtown Harmony, Minn. No, it’s not a recording studio. And no, it’s not someone composing the next great top-40 hit. Mason Weedman recently purchased one of the century-old storefronts in this Fillmore County community, where his primary focus is on crafting new violins, violas, cellos and double basses. He and his wife, Beth, and their six-year-old son, Elwyn, moved from the Twin Cities to Harmony this past year. Weedman has been immersed in the art of repair and the creation of stringed instruments since 2007. He fell into this vocation kind of by accident. He decided to try his hand at playing the cello. He acquired a used one that needed quite a bit of TLC. Being fairly good with his hands, he Googled “how to repair a cello.” He learned about the Southeast State Instrument Repair Program in Red Wing and enrolled in the one-year program. When it comes to husbands, Anna Madrigal’s exposure to her two brothers-in-law, both named Ryan, propelled her toward yet another Ryan. Jon and Marcia Madrigal’s youngest daughter followed the lead of her two older sisters by adding her new husband Ryan to the fold in 2023. Yes, all three Madrigal girls (Liz, Rachel and Anna) from Decorah have married men named Ryan. Liz, the oldest, got the party started by marrying Ryan Graf June 20, 2015. Rachel, the middle child, married Ryan Grenko Sept. 24, 2016. And, ﬁnally, Anna, the baby of the family, married Ryan Crum on May 13, 2023. Anna said her parents were in utter disbelief when they discovered Anna was dating a Ryan. “They wondered if I’d meticulously created a list of all the Ryans at Luther College and interviewed each one. Now while that’s deﬁnitely something I could see myself doing since I’m so Type A, it was completely a coincidence …It is crazy that all of the Ryans are so different and each have their own unique strengths. But it is fun when we’re all able to get back together because everyone gets along so well,” Anna smiled. Jon and Marcia said that they have nicknames for their three sons-in-law: Ryan Graf is “Doc”, Ryan Grenko is “Grenks” and the new Ryan is simply “Ryancrum”.

From there he landed a job at the Givens Violins Workshop in Minneapolis, where he repaired and restored violins for seven years. “I was able to reﬁne my skill and knowledge while working there,” Weedman noted. “I was lucky enough to work with a master craftsman, who had more than 40 years in the business.” Weedman then moved on to the Robertson and Son’s Violin Shop in Albuquerque, N.M., where he worked as a maker and restorer for ﬁve years. “I had the privilege of working alongside exceptional musicians and being entrusted with the maintenance and restoration of truly invaluable instruments,” Weedman commented about his stint in New Mexico. Mason and his wife decided to move back to the Midwest to be closer to family. Mason was from Plymouth, Wis., (about 45 miles north of Milwaukee) and Beth was from Farmington, Minn. So, the Driftless Region seemed like a workable solution. “We really didn’t want to relocate to a larger city,” Weedman recalled. “In a larger city, I would have way too much call to restore and repair. I wanted to create new instruments.” And that’s just what he’s been busy doing, along with

putting his workshop together. He’s under the gun right now to have three violins completed. One will go to a national expo in Los Angeles, one to a customer in the Twin Cities and another one to Albuquerque. Between a few repair projects and orders for new instruments, Weedman ﬁgures he’s got enough worked line up for the next year. While creating new violins is Weedman’s main focus, he

also has a number of cellos that are in various stages of completion, as well as a double bass and some violas. The tops of his instruments are made of spruce, mainly imported from Europe. The sides and the backs are maple, as are the necks. Weedman uses pear wood for the scroll ends (where the tuning knobs are located) on the cellos and double basses. It takes Weedman about 100 hours to complete each violin and viola. Cellos take about six weeks, and the double basses require 60 days or more. When asked about prices, Weedman said his prices are on the low side for new stringed instruments on the market. He has received a number of

national awards for his creations from the Violin Society of America, the Art of Sound Makers, and the International Society of Bassist Makers. The Weedmans feel the move to Harmony was a good one. Besides Mason’s workshop in the front of the store, Beth has set up a weaving studio in the back. And the large second-floor apartment provides them with comfortable living space. “This seems to be a good fit for us,” Weedman said looking around his spacious workshop. “We are happy we landed here.” And Harmony does seem like an appropriate burg for a fiddle maker, doesn’t it?

Kasemeier makes ﬁrst court appearance

Brandon Kasemeier of Waukon, accused of murdering his wife, Jami Kasemeier, January 22, at his Waukon residence, before ﬂeeing Iowa and being arrested in Larimer County, Colorado January 23, made his ﬁrst appearance before a Larimer County virtual courtroom Friday morning, Feb. 2.

Presiding over the hearing was the Honorable Stephen Jouard, to whom Kasemeier voiced his desire to waive extradition to Iowa. To represent Kasemeier, Judge Jouard assigned Deputy Public Defender Matt Mulch, who was also present at the hearing and had already been working with

Kasemeier prior to the court appearance. Mulch spoke briefly to the court, agreeing he would assist Kasemeier with the extradition waiver process. Kasemeier will again be back in court February 9 at 9 a.m., at which time the court will issue the appropriate order regarding Kasemeier’s extradition waiver

Artist offers series of free arts and nature events in Lanesboro

Lanesboro Arts welcomes back Annie Hejny, former artist-in-residence, for a week of art and nature-inspired winter activities. Hejny is returning to share new creative and outdoor practices including a forest bathing walk, artist talk, book swap and painting workshop. All activities are free and for ages 13 and up. The local AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP program cooperates with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) to provide free tax preparation and ﬁling services to low-income, senior and/or disabled members of the community. Iowa NRCS announces March 1 application cutoff for Organic Transition Initiative The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Iowa is now accepting applications for the Organic Transition Initiative. The Organic Transition Initiative is a USDA initiative that provides financial and technical assistance for conservation practices that support organic production. While NRCS accepts applications year-round, eligible applications received by March 1, will be batched and ranked for Fiscal Year 2024 funding. Before crops can be certified organic, farmers must carefully manage their land without using prohibited inputs like synthetic pesticides for 36 months. During this transition period and during the first years after certification, farmers often face many technical and market challenges. The Organic Transition Initiative provides funding to support producers transitioning to organic production by providing financial and technical assistance to farmers choosing to implement a new organic management standard. The Organic Transition Initiative furthers USDA’s objective of developing diverse food

systems while encouraging climate-smart agriculture by focusing funds on transitioning producers to organic production. This initiative dedicates financial and technical assistance to a new organic management standard. NRCS is dedicating funds to assist producers with a new organic management standard under the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). NRCS will help producers adopt the new organic management standard, which allows flexibility for producers to get the assistance and support they need. It supports conservation practices required for organic certification. Eligible producers include row crop farmers, livestock producers, forest landowners, and other farmers beginning or in the process of transitioning to organic certification. Higher payment rates are available for underserved producers including socially disadvantaged, beginning, veteran and limited resource farmers. To apply, contact a local NRCS Field Office. MnDOT encourages schools, communities to join Winter Walk to School Day Feb. 7

More than 60 Minnesota schools and hundreds of students are expected to participate in Minnesota’s Winter Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Feb. 7. The annual event, sponsored by Minnesota Safe Routes to School, encourages students and parents to celebrate the fun of walking while increasing their physical activity, reducing trafﬁc congestion around schools and practicing pedestrian and bicycle safety skills. “Many schools across the state are struggling to hire bus drivers and are expanding their walk zones to address the gap,” said Kelly Corbin, MnDOT SRTS coordinator. Motorists can help keep kids safe by stopping for people crossing at every corner, even those without marked crosswalks or stop lights, especially during school arrival and dismissal times. When driving through a school zone, slow down, scan the road for people walking and be alert for students.

Schools are invited to submit stories and photos to saferoutes. dot@state.mn.us by Feb. 16 to compete for the annual Golden Snow Boot Award. Winter Walk to School Day also encourages parents and community members to consider the walkability and bikeability of their neighborhoods because children walk and bike to other community destinations like playgrounds, libraries, parks and more. Keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice, especially at corners, helps make communities safer and more accessible to children and families going for a walk. Minnesota Safe Routes to School provides resources and grants to advance SRTS programs through planning, bike/ walk education curriculum and support for improving infrastructure on routes to school. The SRTS website also provides interested schools with more information about annual Walk to School days, including a toolkit to help plan an event.

Keystone AEA Planetarium coming to Ft. Atkinson Explore the stars, moon and night sky Winneshiek County Conservation in the Keystone AEA Planetarium, hosted by the Fort Atkinson Public Library. This program is for all ages and will be held in the Fort Atkinson Community Center gym.

Dairy Promotion Board seeking nominations The 61st Annual Winneshiek County Dairy Banquet will be held Friday, April 12, at the Festina Parish Center in Festina, starting at 7 p.m. Following the banquet, awards will be presented and the 2024 Little Miss Squirt, Little Mr. Herdsman and the Winneshiek County Dairy Princesses will be crowned. Tickets are available at the Winneshiek County Extension ofﬁce, from members of the Winneshiek County Dairy Promotion Board or the evening of the event. The board is seeking help in nominating county dairymen, dairy women and youth for their hard work and accomplishments.

Nominations are needed for the following awards: Outstanding Young Dairy Producer: The award honors young dairy farmers, age 40 and younger, who have excelled in management, production and respect within the dairy community. Distinguished Service: This award can be anyone who has made a huge impact or contributions to the dairy industry in Winneshiek County. Distinguished Dairy Family: A family award in which the entire family must be involved in the dairy farm, local youth programs and a strong supporter of the dairy industry. Pioneer Dairy Producer: The producer has made a significant contribution to the dairy industry. This person(s) must be no longer involved in the production of milk. ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO: A whopping $500 reward is being offered for any information leading to arrests made in conjunction with all the mysterious fires that have occurred recently in the northern parts of Winneshiek County. The members of the Winneshiek Norwegian Mutual Protection Association have voted to offer the reward to anyone who can provide proof that the fires were deliberately set. …FRONT PAGE NEWS: A marble tournament will be held on the playgrounds of the high school in the spring. The event promises to create a lot of fun and excitement. The tourney will be open to students in grades third through eighth, inclusive. A tourney for the girls has not yet been worked out. …Sever Olson suffered a net loss of about $1,500 as a result of the fire in one of his buildings on West Water Street the other morning. He was summoned to the blaze while enjoying breakfast at Shorty’s Café. …The Citizen’s Savings Bank building has now been sold. C.J. Madrigal/Crum continued from front History Anna was born and raised in Decorah. She attended Luther College, played on the womens basketball team, and majored in Economics. Ryan is from Mount Horeb, Wis., the son of Arnie and Lori Crum. His mom, the former Lori Hermeier, is originally from Waukon. When selecting a college, Ryan wanted to be close to his family in Waukon and in the Northeast Iowa/Driftless region to enjoy the outdoors. He attended Luther College, played on the men’s soccer team, and majored in Environmental Science. Ryan’s parents moved after their boys graduated high school and now live outside of Waukon. Ryan first saw Anna playing basketball at Luther College when they were both sophomores. One of Anna’s good friends on the basketball team, Carrie, was dating Ryan’s teammate on the soccer team, JW. JW planned to watch a game on a Saturday so Ryan tagged along. At one point, JW leaned over and said to Ryan, “What do you think about #32?” (Anna’s basketball number) to which Ryan replied with an en-

thusiastic, “Not bad” and so JW and Carrie planned a night for everyone to hang out and the rest is history. Even though he’s not a huge basketball fan, Ryan still attended many Luther College womens basketball games over the next few years. Ryan and Anna got engaged at the lookout point over Heritage Valley, featuring a stunning view of the Upper Iowa River, bluffs and woodlands of Northeast Iowa. During an internship with the Iowa Natural Heritage foundation, Ryan helped restore and care for the land. Recently, on a weekend trip to Decorah, Anna spotted a print at custom framing business The Perfect Edge of the exact view where they got engaged. The folks down at Perfect Edge helped get the print framed and now it is displayed in their home in Madison, Wis. The pair graduated from Luther in May 2017. Anna moved off to Minneapolis, starting to travel around the country to pursue a career in consulting. Ryan moved back to Madison and started working in environmental restoration and ecology. There were many four-hour drives both ways on Interstate 90, and pick-ups at the Madi-

Anna (Madrigal) and Ryan Crum were married at the Decorah Fish Hatchery under a tent. “People thought we were a little ambitious having an outdoor ceremony in the middle of May,” Anna said. “And we thought the same thing when it was downpouring at 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon . . . . but everything was clear for our events.”

son airport. Once, Ryan drove from Madison to Milwaukee at midnight to pick-up Anna after the last shuttle for Madison had already left for the evening. Their story continues after two years of long-distance dating. Anna made the move to Madison in September 2021, and while living there, they moved to Appleton, Wis., for Ryan’s job promotion. They were engaged on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 2021. Despite Ryan thinking he had planned the perfect surprise, Anna bumped into a few Decorah residents leading up to the weekend, and they just couldn’t keep a secret. They couldn’t have been happier to celebrate surrounded by their entire family. They started planning their wedding in 2022, as they welcomed their sweet dog, Honey, into their home. Their special wedding weekend started with a welcome party at Pulpit Rock Brewing Company Friday, May 12. They were married at a 3:30 p.m. ceremony Saturday, May 13, at the Decorah Fish Hatchery. A reception followed at Oneota Golf & Country Club. When asked about their wedding theme, Anna was quick to accentuate simplicity in her description. “Ryan and I are super simple people and I’ve never been someone who likes anything flashy –clean lines and classic touches; we kept things super natural with lots of white, different shades of blue, and pops of green,” she commented. “I was really inspired by my sisters’ previous weddings they had in Decorah – they leaned into a lot of greenery.” Anna continued, “We were really focused on just making the day as fun as possible –

from getting a live band for the adults and the photo booth for the kids.” The Crums appreciated the help from their parents in the planning. “My mom helped with so much; I tend to get super caught up in my work and at the time we were doing a lot of the planning, we were still living in Appleton, so it was tough to make the four-hour trip back to Decorah sometimes. She is so connected to the community in Decorah and has developed great working relationships with so many of those people through selling real estate – it made it incredibly easy,” Anna continued. “I’d also shoutout my friend Emily (Alcock) Henriquez. She’s a professional events planner (who has somewhat followed in her mother’s (Sherry Alcock) footsteps. I bounced the entire schedule for the day off her and got her advice on how to best structure the day to make sure everything flowed, and we were never rushed.” Their choice to have the wedding outdoors was an easy one. “We love the outdoors, especially the Driftless Region, and Siewers Springs/Decorah Fish Hatchery is really the embodiment of that. Plus, my sister Liz also got married there, and that was also a beautiful ceremony,” Anna said. Highlights Their wedding weekend was full of fun and food. From the rehearsal dinner/welcome party at Pulpit Rock on Friday night, to Impact coffee Saturday morning, an Oneota Coop brunch and a walk around Decorah for the women and Impact coffee and some disc golf on the Luther campus for the men.

They had their “first look” at the historic Luther College Barn and had more pictures near Lindeman Pond before heading to the wedding venue. Ryan was wearing a bolo tie that belonged his late grandpa, Harlan Hermeier. Anna was wearing specially-designed jewelry gifted from her uncle Peter Wolfe. Ceremony Anna said she really wanted to write their own vows; but since Ryan isn’t as performative as her, he was hesitant at first but ultimately obliged. “He absolutely crushed it!” Anna smiled. “I had my nephew and all my little nieces walk down the aisle before I came out, and they were incredibly cute. Oliver, the oldest, led the way; and each of the little ladies gave Ryan a huge hug.” “We had to have our friend, Alex Weber (fiancé at the time to the maid of honor – Moran Lonning), play music for the ceremony. He played all our favorite artists – the Lumineers, Zach Bryan and Caamp. “My aunt, Melissa Welsch, picked out the tree for the unity ceremony – a white pine (we later planted that tree on Ryan’s parent’s land outside of Waukon). “Marlon Henriquez (husband to bridesmaid Emily Henriquez)

was our officiant. We knew we wanted a friend to marry us, and Marlon was the perfect choice. As an elementary school principal, he definitely knows how to command a room and you would have never guessed this was his first time. He is incredibly charismatic and took the role so seriously. We are so thankful for him and were happy to launch his side hustle as an officiant,” the Crums agreed. Following the wedding ceremony the wedding party hopped on their party bus and headed to Toppling Goliath, where they took over the upstairs. The groomsmen boasted Hawaiian TG shirts for much of the evening to follow. The reception at Oneota Golf & Country Club was followed by a dance. “We had “Crum”bl cookies as a dessert and they were “Crum”believable,” Anna said. “The JayR Brink band played a little bit for everyone – DJ-ing some popular songs and then also playing country music like Zach Bryan and classics like Alabama.” Anna said one of the memorable highlights of the reception was her husband singing “Should’ve Been a Cowboy”. As previously noted, Anna is definitely the one that likes to be on-stage, but everyone wanted to see Ryan sing that song. “He was so happy up there, definitely outside of his comfort zone,” Anna reminisced, “but he had been talking about that being his one and only song he’d ever sing in front of a crowd. I was happy to be dancing and singing along in the front row.” A post-wedding brunch was held in the upstairs at Impact Coffee on Sunday morning for the wedding party, their close family and friends. Java John’s catered the event, serving up cinnamon rolls and quiche. The newlyweds realized how lucky they were to have beautiful weather for their special weekend. “People thought we were a little ambitious having an

Sammi Boyd and Matt Mendez aren’t a traditional married couple. The Spring Grove, Minn., couple grew up just ﬁve houses apart, were one grade apart in school and were in a relationship together for 10 years before they decided to tie the knot. So, it’s only natural that they wouldn’t have a traditional wedding. Instead, when they got married, they held a celebration for their friends and family — with a few per-

sonal touches just for them thrown in for good measure. Sammi and Matt were married Oct. 14, 2023, at Wold Strawberries in rural Mabel — a place sacred to Matt since he was a young boy. “I spent almost every day after school on

Boyd-Mendez the strawberry farm, because my grandparents (Wayne and Janet Wold) would watch me when my parents were working,” Matt said. “I just always clung to Wayne’s hip. We were inseparable. So, from the getgo, I knew it was important to have our wedding out there because without a doubt, it holds such a strong place in my heart. It’s bigger than words.” “We had to ﬁgure out how to get all the parts of the day and the party that we wanted at a farm; not an established venue. So, that was super fun,” Sammi said. “The farm is more representative of us working as a team. We’ve always joked that two of us make one Grandpa. Matt is the hard work and logic side of it, and I’m more of the dreamy green thumb who’s gonna plant whatever I want, because it’s pretty or it sounds fun. We’re the Yin and Yang of production.” But, just because they had the perfect location picked out, that doesn’t mean that it went off without a hitch. They planned for their wedding to be outside, but it rained prior to their wedding day, which caused a memorable experience in and of itself. “We called an audible,” Sammi said. “We asked everyone (125 people), except for those that needed a chair, to stand for our ceremony. The weather leading up to our wedding day was super rainy, so it would have caused the chairs to be soaked if they were out overnight, and the chairs would have sunk into the ground.” Standing for the ceremony wasn’t too difﬁcult, however, because the entire ceremony lasted just two minutes. “For us, the big part of the wedding was having everyone there, and we wanted that to be highlight of the evening,” said Matt. “The reason why it was so short is we’ve been together for, it’ll be 10 years this year, all through college, and we lived together,” added Sammi. “We knew people that had gotten together at the same age were getting married, but we wanted to

do it our way, and in our hearts, we didn’t need that ceremony.” The more-personalized ceremony wouldn’t have been complete without the couple’s dog, Poppy, making a contribution of her own. “She’s our baby,” said Sammi. “She walked down the aisle with my dad and I. About halfway, and I just let her go to go see Matt. And, when we were leaving, my dad handed the leash back to me, and we had just gotten past the end where everyone was standing, and she had to ‘go’, and so she went. I’d say half the people saw, and everyone was like ‘Oh my gosh’ and thought it was the funniest thing ever.” “We were talking about it later, and we were like, ‘Well, it happened, but at least it didn’t happen up front, during the exchanging of rings,’” Matt said. “Everyone thought it was hilarious.” “It was mortifying in the moment, but it’s funny now,” Sammi added. Also unique to their wedding was the exchanging of their vows. Matt and Sammi exchanged traditional vows during the ceremony, which was ofﬁciated by Elliot, Matt’s best friend since childhood, but after the ceremony, when everyone else was at the reception, the newlyweds escaped to a more-private location at which they exchanged the vows they’d written for each other. “It was just kind of our own moment set aside for just us,” Sammi said. “I don’t know if we planned it to be like that, but looking back on it now, it was nice,” Matt added. “The whole day up to that point had been so fast paced and nerve-racking that it was nice for us to be able to take a breath and kind of collect ourselves and have a one-onone moment of just ourselves. It was deﬁnitely nice to have that.” After they exchanged vows, it was time to celebrate, and even their choice of music wasn’t traditional. Instead of a band or DJ, the couple made a playlist using streaming music

and played it through amplified speakers. “We were looking for ways to save money,” Matt said. “We were already spending a fortune. So, I thought, ‘With all the streaming services out there, why don’t we pick music we like?’” “Part of that is that Matt’s top 10 most-hated songs are the songs played at every wedding ever,” Sammi added, “topped off by ‘Don’t Stop Believin’.’ So, that’s why we started looking at other options.” Matt explained that they made their own wedding playlist, but they also wanted to play songs their guests liked. So, their invitations contained a QR code, which directed friends and family to the playlist, so they could add songs they liked as well. And, of course the playlist included “Everglow” by Coldplay — which Sammi and Matt consider ‘their song’, which was the first song to be played at the reception … under a tent on the farm not far from where they exchanged vows. “In our earlier years, when we were best friends, before we decided to be together, Coldplay was our mutual favorite band,” Sammi said. “We had some other songs that were more like ‘our song’ but weren’t appropriate for our first dance.” Other songs from what Matt called the “multi-genre playlist” included “Party Rock Anthem” by the band LMFAO, the “I’m a Believer” cover by Smashmouth, “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC, The Foo Fighters, CCR and more. Additionally, the mother-son dance song was “Wildflowers” by Tom Petty, and the father-daughter dance song was “Only the Strong Survive” by REO Speedwagon. “The first half of the playlist was tailored to a wider audience, and then, as the night went on, we had more music for younger people,” Matt said. “There wasn’t any rap in the first 20 minutes. It was funny to be outside that night and realize that ‘This is the first time, in the history of the Earth, that this song was played on this piece of land.’”

Memorable vendors Sammi said that a big part of what made the night so memorable was their vendors. She said Oak and Olive Flowers of Decorah was their ﬂorist, they rented their tents from Decorah Rentals, and Fat Pat’s Brewery of Spring Grove was their caterer. Sammi’s bridal gown was from The Dress by Morgan Lynn of Decorah, and Skies the Limit Events of West Salem, Wis., provided “Gertie”, an old recreational trailer turned into a mobile full-service bar. “Overall, our vendors were just amazing,” she said. “Some of them were family friends, and some of them are new friends. Going through small, local businesses really makes a difference. The amount of personality and love you see coming through their work, and the friendships and relationships that come out of that, is night and day. We couldn’t have done it without them.” But, most importantly, the newlyweds agree their favorite part of their special day was celebrating all the people who helped make them who they are today. “Overall, we wanted it to be ‘our’ day with ‘our’ people,” Sammi said. “Being able to celebrate our love with the people we love in the place we love was the best feeling. We wanted the event to be not formal, not stuffy. We wanted it to be fun. We wanted people to leave it and look back and remember how fun it was.” “We wanted our wedding to be a time to celebrate the people we care about, who have helped us grow and develop over the years and have that be the focus,” Matt added. “Our families guided us, taught us and molded us to make us who we are today, and they also made our wedding what it was. So, our wedding was more about celebrating them.” “We will both remember the overwhelming outpouring of positivity and love from everyone attending,” Sammi added. “It was such a special feeling.”

“Gertie”, a mobile bar offered by Skies The Limit Events, of West Salem, Wis., was a fun addition to the Mendez wedding reception. “We had to ﬁgure out how to get all the parts of the day and the party that we wanted at a farm; not an established venue,” Sammi said.

Due to a state speech contest Saturday, the firetruck ride and bell ringing, along with a celebration rally was held Saturday — a night after the Vikings blew away the competition at the state wrestling tournament at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville. Decorah tallied 141 points, leaps and bounds ahead of East Buchanan and Raccoon River-Northwest who tied for second with 96 points. In addition the Vikings recorded 24 pins during the two-day tournament with two wrestlers in the finals and five place winners. Four-time champion The Viking team also boasts the first four-time state champion in girls’ wrestling history in Iowa — Naomi Simon. The senior pinned her way to the finals at 170 pounds. Lantigua of Marshalltown, throwing her in 1:13. Next in her way was Kensi Steele of Iowa City Liberty who Simon turned in 1:04 to advance to the quarterfinal round. It took the Viking 1:39 to pin Aleah Johnson of Raccoon River-Northwest and she kept the pin action going in the semifinal round against West Marshall’s Averie Wittkop, throwing her in 1:09. In her only non-fall action of the tournament, N. Simon took down Autumn Elsbury of South Tama County by a 15-2 major decision. Runner-up Junior Chloe Sheffield came up just short of the top spot at 100 pounds as she fell to returning champion Katie Biscoglia of Raccoon River-Northwest by a 5-1 decision and still walked off the mat with a smile. Sheffield began her trek to the finals with a 9-1 major decision over Addison Schulte of West Delaware in round one and threw Sophia Calpito of Charles City in 2:44 to advance to the quarterfinals. There she got the pin in 5:53 over Algona’s Harley Tobin. It was NEIC matchup between Sheffield and Mia Kurth of Waukon in the semifinals, with the Viking getting the fall in 5:57. Other Viking placewinners After qualifying for state last year, but not placing, Ana Simon was one of the many Vikings who put in an extra effort in the off-season and it paid off as the sophomore was on the mat for third place Friday night at 145 pounds, coming away with the fall in 44 seconds. Kamryn Steines also competed on the final night to place sixth at 190 pounds, falling by 3-0 decision to Charles City’s

Leah Stewart, who had knocked Steines out in the quarterfinal. Finishing eighth for the Vikings after falling 7-5 by sudden victory was Lauren Luzum at 155 pounds. South Winn’s wrestlers Two South Winn girls also saw action in Coralville — senior Kaydn Meyer at 125 pounds and Maddy Jansen at 135 pounds, both who competed at state a year ago as well. Meyer concluded her final season with an eighth-place spot on the podium and a 3810 record, while Jansen battled through an injury to qualify and went 1-2 at the tournament and finished 24-11. The paths Decorah is in Class 2A, District 5 and will compete at Independence. Other teams there include BCLUW-SH, Clarion-Goldﬁeld-Dows, East Marshall-GMG, Hampton-Dumont-CAL, Independence, Oelwein and Union. The Warriors are in Class 1A District 1 at Denver along with Beckman Catholic, Denver, Don Bosco, Edgewood-Colesburg, Hudson, North Linn, Springville, Tripoli and Wapsie Valley. New Hampton/Turkey Valley is also in Class 2A, but District 9 and will compete at West Delaware with the host Hawks, Benton Community, Center Point-Urbana, Maquoketa, Monticello, Northeast and Wahlert Catholic.

SW girls fall to Bulldogs

Facing the top of the conference is a tough enough battle let alone doing it on their own court as the South Winn girls’ basketball team (6-14, 5-10 UIC) found Friday night as the Warriors fell 53-34 to MFL MarMac (14-6, 14-2 UIC). The Bulldogs pulled together from the start with the home defense holding SW to three points in the ﬁrst and putting up 17. The Warriors picked up the offense in the second but still trailed 26-10 at halftime. Putting up 14 points, the Red and Gray won the third quarter but not by much as MFL MarMac held on to a 38-24 advantage and put the game further out of reach in the fourth. Seven Warriors scored in the effort with Karissa Wenthold leading the way with seven points. Alyssa Holthaus was there for six points and four steals, while Chloe Wiltgen provided six points and six rebounds. Trojans cap off week with wins

On the road Thursday In their second road game of the week, the Trojans stumbled in the fourth quarter to hand North Fayette Valley (16-3, 11-3 UIC) a win 61-45 Thursday night. The Trojans led off the game with 14-6 lead following the first eight minutes of play and maintained their advantage until the final minutes of the second quarter with NFV hitting the final six points of the half to lead 28-25 at halftime. Trailing by four, 45-41, with eight minutes of play remaining, the Trojans were held scoreless until the final minute as the TigerHawks rattled of a 16-0 run. The senior trio of Caleb Kurtenbach, Russell Nieman and Oliver Schmitt led the way with Kurtenbach putting up 15 points. Nieman and Schmitt each provided 11. A close one Turkey Valley got back in the win column with a 54-51 victory over Postville (13-9, 9-8 UIC) Friday night at home. After trailing in the early minutes of the game, the Trojans’ offensive pace picked up for a 13-11 ﬁrst-frame lead. Both ends of the ﬂoor were clicking in the second period for TV as

the home team outscored the visitors 16-7 and carried a 2918 lead into halftime. Building on that lead, the Trojans moved out front 44-29 with eight minutes remaining. The Pirates stormed back in the fourth with 22 points, leaving the Trojans scrambling to hold on for the win by three points. Schmitt carried the offensive burden with 19 points while Busta added 10. Easy victory In their third game in a row, the Trojans didn’t look fatigued as they bested Clayton Ridge (4-15, 2-12 UIC) at home 5742. Turkey Valley rolled out to an 18-8 lead in the ﬁrst and continued to set the pace with a 26-16 lead at halftime. Final games Monday, Turkey Valley host South Winn in yet another make-up game that was postponed in January. The Trojans will host Kee in the regular season ﬁnale that kicks off with the junior varsity boys at 6:15 p.m.

Dual season wraps up for Warrior matmen The late addition to the schedule put the South Winn boys’ wrestling team on the mats Friday at East Buchanan with the Warriors picking up three wins and finishing the season with a 21-9 dual record. “We were missing three of our starters due to injury or illness but this team figured out a way to get it done and each kid stepped up and did their part. We were down early in both the Sumner-Fred and East Buc duals but finished strong with some big time wins and some bonus point victories. Our seniors have led us all season long and are a big reason this team has finished strong,” said Coach Jacob Elsbernd. The Warriors bested Belle Plaine 49-21 with nine earning wins. Landon Schnuelle kicked off the dual with a fall at 150 pounds over Mason Spear in 1:05. Earning a 14-1 major decision, Kyle Kuboushek got bonus points for the Warriors over Derek Kressley. Pulling

out an 11-6 decision at 106 pounds over Bradlee Lewis was freshman Gavin Thuente. In 54 seconds, Aiden Feickert put the shoulders of Hunter Henry to the mat at 113 pounds and Collin Holm pinned William Sankot in 4:11 at 144 pounds. Receiving forfeits for South Winn were Gavin Feickert (157), Matthew Horstman (215) and Kolton Brummond (285). After a sluggish 0-5 start to the dual, South Winn bounced back to defeat the host Buccaneers 45-30. Thuente was the ﬁrst of three Warriors to pick up consecutive falls at 106 pounds over Nolan Peyton in 39 seconds. A. Feickert followed suit in 25 seconds at 113 pounds over Kaden Hepke. Then it was Jamison Zweibahmer’s turn at 120 pounds as the sophomore turned Tayton Elledge in 1:18. At 132 pounds, Bo Wangsness got the fall in 3:21 over Brody McGrath followed by a forfeit received by Eric Greve at 138 pounds. In 5:51, Lukas

Weiss got the pin over Trenton Elledge at 144 pounds. Holm, who had moved to 150 pounds, threw Jack Gericke in 1:08. Kuboushek’s 3-1 decision over Clay Wilgenbusch was the final nail in the Bucs coffin. A forfeit at 165 pounds were the only points South Winn got in the first six matches against Sumner-Fredericksburg in dual that started at 157 pounds. From that point it was the Warriors in control, winning all but two matches by fall. One of those losses was a forfeit in South Winn’s favor and one for the Cougars. Thuente took 3:36 to turn Michael Eimers at 106 pounds. Zweibahmer (126) got the fall over Trice Anderson in 36 seconds, followed by Bo Wangsness (132) throwing Ryder Larson in 2:52. Putting Brennen Blake flat in 2:24 at 138 pounds was Weiss. Holm threw Kyler Glenn in 1:48 at 144 pounds, while Schnuelle picked up the pin over Nolan Pagel in 1:13.

Twin wins for Decorah girls

Vikes celebrate seniors with “W” With a handful of games remaining before the postseason, the Decorah boys’ basketball team (16-2, 8-1 NEIC) picked up a win over Waukon Friday night, then dropped a heartbreaking game to Cascade in the final minutes Saturday in non-conference action.

Senior night Recognizing the dedication to the program of its seniors Friday, the Vikings shone bright against Waukon (6-11, 4-5 NEIC) at home with an 87-38 victory. Starting the game with a bang, Decorah led 31-18 after the first eight-minute segment and forged a 49-26 lead at the halftime break. Outscoring the Indians 22-9 in the third gave the Vikings more than enough cushion to win the game. Sophomore Cael LaFrentz

finished the night with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Matthew Bockman put up 18 points to go with five rebounds and four assists, while Ben Bockman also finished in double figures with 13 points.

Falling short Leading for most of Saturday’s game, the Vikings’ less-than-average fourth quarter doomed them against Cascade (13-4) as Decorah suffered its second loss of the season, 6057. After the Vikes led 15-10 after the opening quarter, the game came down to a battle for control with the score knotted at 28-28 as the teams went to the locker room. W-SR keglers fall to Vikings It was a familiar bowling alley for the Decorah bowling teams with yet another opponent as the Viking girls’ and boys’ teams defeated Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday night. A mere 98 pins separated the two squads after round one with Decorah dropping the first baker game. However, the Vikes put together four solid baker games to win 2,935 over the Go-Hawks’ 2,618. Baker scores were 159, 196, 194, 236 and 196. The second-best all-time score came from Jordan Sims who fired a 533 total (279, 254) to lead Decorah. Others on the lanes for the Vikes were Cade Averhoff (150, 155), Jace Buddenberg (172, 190), Bryce Elsbernd (189, 151), Beau Newhouse (190, 128) and Tyler Novak (233, 168). Four-game week wraps up for TV girls 1-2

Weather earlier in January forced a busy end to last week for the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (6-15, 5-10 UIC) who had three games in three days, going 1-2.

Overtime Missed free throws down the stretch and in overtime proved to be costly Thursday night in the first of three nights of basketball action for the Trojans girls. Ultimately, Turkey Valley fell in overtime 52-49 to North Fayette Valley (14-6, 11-4 UIC) on the road. TV kicked off the game with stellar play on both ends of the court with a 14-10 lead in the first quarter. In the second, the UIC teams combined for 10 points with NFV taking a 1816 lead at the break. The TigerHawks clung to a one-point advantage with eight minutes to play; however, TV managed to tie it up two minutes into the fourth and soon after took the lead. In the closing four minutes of play, the Trojans led by as many as eight before NFV rattled off seven unanswered points and tied the game at 47 at the end of regulation. In overtime, missed TV free throws took a toll as NFV pulled off the win over the Trojans. Addison Steinlage posted a double-double in the effort with 15 points and 10 rebounds. In one of the most competitive districts, the Decorah boys’ swim team managed to qualify four events for the state swim meet Saturday. As a team the Vikings finished fourth with 212 points behind Cedar Falls with 490, Ankeny with 465 and Marshalltown with 282. The state swim meet will be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9-10, at the University of Iowa Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City. Competition will begin Friday at 5 p.m., and Saturday at 12:30 p.m. “It was another outstanding performance by the boys’ swim team. We had significant season-best performances by all three relays and several swimmers continued their time drops from the conference meet,” said Coach Loran Storts. “We eagerly look forward to this week’s state meet. Layni Schuchhardt is a junior member of the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team. Off the court she is involved in volleyball and track. Through the first 16 games, Schuchhardt is averaging 5.1 points a game, but her claim to fame is her defense as she is second in steals on the team with 30 to go with 61 total rebounds (37 offensive, 24 defensive). The junior has also handed out 26 assists. “Layni will always give it her best effort no matter what she participates in and has developed into a lock-down defender,” said Turkey Valley head girls basketball coach Steve Hoffert. Layni is the daughter of Michelle Franzen and Tony Schuchhardt.

Isaac Knaack is a senior member of the Decorah boys’ swim team who also participates in soccer and winter activities leadership team. Last week at the North Central Swim Conference, Knaack won two titles including the 100-yard backstroke and as a member of the 200-yard medley relay. Last season, he qualified for state in four events and was a member of the 200-yard free relay team that broke the school record. “Isaac is a quiet leader for our team and simply puts the work in the pool each and every day,” said Decorah boys’ swim coach Loran Storts. Isaac is the son of Wes and Andrea Knaack.

Northeast Iowa Artists’ Studio Tour 2024 dates announced The 27th Annual Northeast Iowa Artists’ Studio tour will take place Oct. 11-13, 2024, with studios open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Artist’s applications for tour entry are juried, and participants are selected for their work’s technique, quality and vision, and their studios must reside within 40 miles of Decorah. Postmark deadline for submitting an application is April 1. Media considered is limited to fine art and fine craft, including: painting, sculpture, jewelry, photography, clay/ceramics, wood, glass, metal, printmaking, mixed media, handmade paper, fiber, etc. as appropriate at fine art fairs. All works must be original in concept and design and must have been executed by the applicant; works from molds or kits, commercial or manufactured items and buy/sell are not permitted. Tour exhibitors qualify as fine artists meaning they possess the skill to expand and adapt even a high-end craft with individual vision. The self-guided tour is specially timed to enjoy the fall color and travels in scenic northeast Iowa, for a behindthe-scenes view into the Artists’ personal workspace.
