Unusual ﬁnd with WWII connections at thrift store The mortar-shell tubes in one of the munitions crates found at the Depot Outlet thrift store in Decorah. (submitted photo) Driftless Multimedia’s Zach Jensen never served in United States armed forces, but thanks his experience as a longtime Iowa newspaperman, he knew what he was looking at didn’t belong in a thrift store. Jensen visited the Depot Outlet in Decorah one day in October, to look for things to help decorate his new desk at the local newspaper ofﬁce. And, as he was standing in line to pay for his goods, he looked down and noticed something peculiar: A U.S. military munitions crate with original markings. “There were two crates — one in a bit better shape than the other,” Jensen said. “They made me curious, so I decided to look inside the top one, and what I found just about made me call 911.” Jensen found three tubes in each crate — all with markings indicating they were used

to haul something containing a military-grade explosive known as “Composition-B”, which he knew, from past interviews, was used in World War II. Upon further investigation, the local reporter was able to deduce that the tubes were used, speciﬁcally, to transport Composition-B mortar shells. According to the 1996 Paul Cooper book, “Explosives Engineering”, Comp-B was used in U.S. military explosives from World War II through the Vietnam War, and it had been used in mortars, grenades, tank shells and more. Comp-B is also named by Tom Hanks’ character in the movie “Saving Private Ryan”. “I hadn’t touched them yet, so I asked the cashier if she knew that these tubes contained highly explosive materials,” Jensen explained. “But, she said they’d all been checked

and were all empty. I still had to check for myself, and sure enough they were empty. But, I asked myself, ‘What would Comp-B mortar shell tubes be doing in the Depot?’ The crates were marked $100 each, so they knew they had something, but did they know what they actually had?” Not wanting the war memorabilia to fall into the wrong hands, Jensen immediately took photos of the crates and tubes and called VFW Post 1977 Treasurer Mark Stockdale and sent him the photos. Stockdale agreed the crates didn’t belong in a thrift store and assured Jensen that he’d try to ﬁnd them a new home. That new home turned out to be the new Allamakee County Veterans Museum at 40 1st St. SE in Waukon, which opened in 2022. Marsha Rush, who volunteers for the museum, said the

Depot didn’t charge them for the crates or their contents, but the museum made a donation to the Depot for its contribution. “We have them on display now,” said museum volunteer John Bauercamper. “I showed them to some Vietnam veterans, and we put them in the same Vietnam War display with a bunker and a mural of helicopters in the back. We already had a similar wooden crate, virtually identical, that Carl Johnson had purchased a long time ago. He donated most of his Vietnam stuff to us.” Bauercamper said Johnson, formerly the Iowa VFW President, was a decorated Vietnam Veteran from Waukon, who worked for the Decorah Post Ofﬁce for many years.

Holiday Lights raises $150,000 in support of Helping Services programs

The 19th annual Helping Services for Youth & Families’ Holiday Lights event raised over $150,000 in free-will donations and sponsorships to support Helping Services’ programs. The community event – and Helping Services’ most important fundraiser – brought 4,445 cars through Pulpit Rock Campground in Decorah, hosted 3,148 visitors for the opening Walk-Through event and enlisted the help of over 425 volunteers throughout the season. Helping Services recognizes and thanks all volunteers, sponsors and visitors who made Holiday Lights a success. Save the date for the 20th annual Holiday Lights opening Walk-Through Night held Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024. Helping Services for Youth & Families is a nonproﬁt organization with programs that promote healthier and safer families and youth in northeast Iowa. Masopust 2024: The Czech Mardi Gras will be Feb. 10 in Calmar The Czech Heritage Partnership is holding its 18th Annual Masopust celebration on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 10, at Pivo Brewery in Calmar. “We are very excited to again hold Masopust, the Czech Mardi Gras,” said Ken Zajicek, President of the Czech Heritage Partnership (CHP). “This Masopust event gives folks a glimpse of Czech culture and an amazing taste of old-world Czech food . . . Pivo’s signature Masopust Czech beers, live and silent auctions, a wild and crazy Czech theater skit, scholarship awards and the awesome chance for conversation with family and renew friendships.” This year’s entertainment features the well-known Malek’s Fishermen Band. Masopust event organizer Audrey Lensing said, “The Malek’s Band is one of the ﬁnest polka bands in the Midwest and continues the great tradition of dance music excellence started by Syl Malek in the 1930s.” The Czech village of Varvazov will be highlighted during the event and its descendants recognized. Varvazov is the origin of the Novak, Luzum and Humpal families to be recognized; these families came to northeast Iowa in the mid-1800s. Varvazov is a municipality and village in Písek District in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic with about 200 inhabitants. The historic center of the village is well-preserved and is protected by law as a village monument

Originally, Johnson was a “tunnel rat”, and Bauercamper said Johnson worked his way up to become a sniper during the Vietnam War. “He and several other Vietnam vets identiﬁed them as a Vietnam-era munition; the kind of thing that was used in mortars,” Bauercamper said. “Several remember carrying them around. We haven’t had anyone who was a mortar man, but there was a mortar outﬁt in every company. “So, we’ve set those two onend and used them to display things,” Bauercamper continued. “If we had a mortar, we use them for what their purpose was, but we don’t have a mortar, because they’re fairly hard to come by. I don’t know if that would even be legal.” It may be legal for someone to own the crates, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re safe to handle. “Now that they’re empty, they’re legal,” Bauercamper said. “But, when I opened the tubes up to look at them, my hands kind of burned afterward, so I think there’s some debris left over inside those tubes. We didn’t think it was a good idea to have them open or have

So, we’re using the crates to display the tubes, and we’ve displayed them in such a way that you can read all the stenciling on them.” Bauercamper said it’s unlikely that a Veteran would bring home two crates of mortar shell tubes, but the possibility isn’t entirely foreign. For example, most of the items Johnson donated he’d found in thrift stores and other similar venues. Bauercamper added that everything the public can contribute to the museum helps tell

the story of the conditions and events Veterans experienced and what they used in their daily lives. “It’s not easy to get many things for exhibits,” he said. “Every time we get something like this, it helps augment an exhibit we already have, or it might give us an idea for another exhibit. So, we very much appreciate the interest and support we get from people, because they help us tell that story better.” “I’m just glad they went to

someone who really appreciates them,” Jensen said. “A lot of people might think it’s cool to own something like those crates and mortar tubes, but they’re literally a part of our Veterans’ history. To me, not revering them is the same as disregarding our Veterans’ experiences, and that’s just not how I was raised.” The Allamakee County Veterans Museum is open Fridays and Saturday mornings throughout the winter months and by special appointment. Drinking water testing available Jan. 13 in Preston

A free well water screening clinic will be held Saturday, Jan. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Fillmore Central Elementary School in Preston, Minn. Free nitrate and chloride screenings will be offered onsite, with results available in 15 minutes. The event is hosted by The Land Stewardship Project, Responsible Ag in Karst Country and the Minnesota Well Owners Organization. Water experts and well-owners will be available for one-onone discussion regarding results or questions while test results are processed. This consultation is free and confidential. If further testing is advised, a voucher for a free certified test will be provided. Water collection Participants are encouraged to collect at least one cup of water in a clean (preferably glass) container or new plastic baggie from the tap where they usually drink. If they have a water treatment system, take two samples: one from untreated water and one from the sink. Take the samples within 24 hours of arriving at the clinic. If the drinking water has an unusual taste, smell or color, participants may choose to bring pictures of their well and any information available about the well construction. IDR issues new income Sons of Norway meeting to feature withholding tax tables Iditarod presentation The Iowa Department of Revenue (IDR) is issuing updated income tax withholding formulas and tables for 2024. The Department updates withholding formulas and tables when necessary to account for inflation and for changes in individual income tax liability resulting from changes in Iowa law. New for 2024 - The Iowa withholding formula and the IA W-4 have been revised to accommodate certain changes enacted by the Iowa legislature in 2023 under Senate File 565. Regarding withholding, SF 565 replaced “number of allowances” with “amount of allowances” to be in line with federal withholding. Because of changes under SF 565 reflected on the 2024 IA W-4 form, employees should be encouraged to file an updated Iowa W-4 using the 2024 IA W-4 form. For employees who do not file an updated W-4 using the 2024 IA W-4 form, employers should use $40 as the total allowance amount and $0 as the additional withholding amount when calculating these employees’ Iowa withholding amounts. Employers can view the Iowa 2024 withholding formulas and tables online. The Department has updated the online Withholding Estimator to help individuals calculate their 2024 withholding amounts. As a reminder, employers must update withholding amounts starting January 1, 2024 but employees can also make changes to their Iowa W-4 (withholding) form by contacting their employer. Traveling in Alaska from Anchorage to Nome, the greatest challenge of the Iditarod is putting together a team of 12–16 dogs and a musher capable of overcoming all the obstacles and unexpected problems along the course. Back on the mats; Vikes second at Flanagan Following a disappointing loss in NEIC action Thursday, the Decorah boys’ wrestling team bounced back Saturday with a runner-up finish at the Flanagan Invite Saturday in Crestwood. It was another incredible night of bowling Friday as the Decorah girls’ and boys’ bowling teams came out on top of Charles City at King Pin Entertainment. The boys squad moved to 5-0 winning 3,309 to 2,705. Baker scores were 208, 217, 213, 172 and 247. Leading the Vikes were Cade Averhoff with games of 212 and 245, followed by TJ Round who rolled a 184 and 268. On their heels was Brock Christensen with 216 and 234 scores. Also on varsity were Bryce Elsbernd (215, 234), Tyler Novak (211, 233) and Jordan Sims (225, 204). “The baker round was just average for the guys with a 1,057; however, their score of 3,309 was the second-highest match score in school history,” noted Coach Keith Bruening. In junior varsity boys’ action, the Vikes ﬁred a 2,830 — a score above the Charles City varsity team with Jace Buddenberg leading the way with a 415 tally. The Viking girls also improved to a 5-0 record with a win over Charles City, 2,686 to 1,966. Baker scores were 192, 221, 151, 147 and 183. “I’m so proud of our girls as they move into a position to win the conference,” said Coach K. Bruening. “We started slow but came on strong with great energy.” Sophomore Karlie Einck was the top bowler for the girls with a 222 and 182. SW girls return to mat action in Elkader With several members of the team not in action, the South Winn girls’ wrestling team competed at Central Friday, finishing with 47 points in 15th place. Southeast Polk claimed the team title with 210, with Sumner-Fredericksburg in second with 151. Kaydn Meyer, Abby Wagner and Maddy Jansen all claimed the fifth-place spot on the podium, while Isabelle Goltz finished eighth. Decorah girls have five crowned champs at Anamosa

The Decorah girls’ wrestling team rebounded from a close conference dual loss Thursday to finish second at Anamosa Saturday, crowning five grapplers as champions. Complete results from the dual and Anamosa tournament will be posted online at driftlessjournal.com.

Close dual Back on the mats Thursday, the Vikings came up short in a conference dual with Waverly-Shell Rock falling 42-33 at home. Decorah picked up five wins and a forfeit against the GoHawks. At 100 pounds, Chloe Sheffield threw Amber Hoth in 4:50. Then Ellie Adams was on the right side of a 5-2 decision against Addison Buseman at 115 pounds. Ana Simon needed just 1:49 to record a fall over Kasey Stone at a 145 pounds. At 155 pounds, Lauren Luzum put Evie Wagner on her back in 3:00 and Naomi Simon turned Ava Soesbe in 1:31 at 190 pounds. with four falls. In 2:40, she turned Irelan Brown of Center Point-Urbana before pinning Bettendorf’s Izzy Giza in the quarterfinals in 5:11. Wadsworth then threw Andelyn Cabalka of East Buchanan in 3:19 to advance to the finals. There the Viking earned the title with a fall recorded in 2:59 over Adeline Whisner of Mt. Vernon. Sophomore A. Simon pinned her way to the finals and capped off the day with a decision for the 145-pound title. In round one, she took just 15 seconds to throw Dakota Pederson of Iowa Valley. She followed it up with a fall in 3:23 over Haylee Karr of Vinton-Shellsburg in the

quarterfinals. Putting the shoulders of Emerson Bartlett of Cedar Falls on the mat in 1:43, put the Viking in the finals against Tayla Stiefel of East Buchanan. In her only match to go all three periods, A. Simon won the final by a 7-1 decision. Luzum won her four matches by fall Saturday for the championship at 155 pounds. In 26 seconds, the sophomore pinned Clair Priebe of Independence. In the quarterfinal match against Shaona Emmanuel of City High, the Viking threw 3:06. Facing Cedar Falls’ Macie Graves in the semifinal, Luzum turned her opponent in 3:45. In the final against Miley Walz, the Decorah grappler pinned her way to the top of podium in 3:08. With none of her four matches reaching the second period, top-ranked N. Simon won at 170-pounds. She threw Rylee Froh of Bettendorf in 36 seconds. In the quarterfinals, the senior put Camryn Cothrell of Cedar Rapids Prairie on her back in 1:33. It was a fall in 42 seconds in the semifinal against Raelene Hawkins of Iowa Valley. Independence’s Izzy Strickert fell to N. Simon in the finals in 1:40. One match The Vikings will only see action once this week as Decorah will compete in a NEIC dual at Crestwood Thursday, Jan. 11, at 6:15 p.m.

Swimmers pick up two wins, set meet records The Decorah swim team got back in the water last week, competing at Vinton-Shellsburg Thursday and the Wahawk Invite Saturday. Complete results from both events will be posted online at driftlessjournal.com. “I am proud of how we swam this week coming off a 20-day break from our last competition. We are swimming much faster this year as compared to the same meets last year. We set two meet records at Waterloo and narrowly missed a third record. Our team depth has also improved this season. In all three of the relays, we placed two teams in the top-six overall, which earned us a lot of “bonus” points on Saturday,” said Coach Loran Storts. “January is an exciting time as we are preparing for the championship phase of our season. Our senior leaders are doing a great job this season, not only are they swimming fast, they are pushing our

younger swimmers to get better as well.”

First races of 2024 Decorah placed first in 10 of the 11 events in a 20-yard, fourlane pool built back in 1941 at Vinton-Shellsburg, winning 6334. All three relays won gold. Isaac Knaack, Dom Bigalk, Mason Cote and Simon Kutz won the 160-yard medley relays in 1:23.33. Dylan Hogan, Bigalk, Ian Giddings and Knaack combined in the 160-yard free relay to post a winning time of 1:16.66. In the final event of the night, the 320-yard free relay it was Reid Kuehner, Bigalk, Cote and Kutz winning gold in 2:52.15. Individually, Knaack was a two-time champion, as was Cote. Knaack won the 160-yard IM in 1:40.45 and came back to win the 100-yard backstroke in 55.91 seconds. Competing in the 100-yard butterfly, Cote

touched the wall first in 1:01.40, then took the top spot in the 100yard breaststroke in 1:05.52. Bigalk took home the 200yard freestyle title in 2:00.96. Giddings captured the 100-yard freestyle gold in 57.33 seconds with Kutz posting a time of 5:35.38 to win the 500-yard freestyle. Wahawk champs Diving back into the water Saturday, the Vikes swam away with the team title at the Waterloo Wahawk Invite, posting 365 points, well ahead of Newton-Colfax-Mingo-Pella’s 251. In all, Decorah won four golds and set two meet records with all three relays coming out on top Saturday. Non-conference The Trojans kicked off the new year against Class 1A No. 5 Riceville (12-0), dropping the contest 48-31 Thursday night on the road. “I liked the way we attacked the basket hard. We were able to get into the lane, we just need to convert on those opportunities. We also did a good job on the boards,” said Coach Steve Hoffert. The Wildcats rolled out to a 21-6 lead after the first frame and was in charge of the contest 33-15 at the break. While TV “won” the second half, outscoring Riceville 16-15, it wasn’t enough to cut into the lead the Wildcats had built early on. Nine Trojans contributed at least two points, led by junior Layni Schuchhardt with eight. Annika Bodensteiner and Haylee Hanson were strong under the basket, coming away with 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

Three wins for SW at UIC duals In the wake of the long holiday break, the South Winn boys’ wrestling team was back in action Thursday and Saturday. Complete results from the UIC duals and Tripoli tournament will be posted online at driftlessjournal.com. UIC duals Teams in the Upper Iowa Conference completed the first half of the team dual competition Thursday at North Fayette Valley with the Warriors securing three wins. South Winn first picked up a 72-12 win over Central Elkader with just five matches taking place against the small squad. Gavin Thuente (106), Aiden Feickert (113) and Collin Holm (144) all picked up falls with nine other Warrior grapplers receiving forfeits. Wrestling Tripoli next, the Warriors had just three matches as they shut out the Panthers, 84-0. Pinning their opponents were Parker Timp (215), Feickert (113) and Landen Schnuelle (150), with all others collecting forfeits. It was a close match between South Winn and MFL MarMac, with the Bulldogs coming out on top 48-36. Timp (215), Thuente (106), Feickert (113) and Bo Wangsness (126) all threw their opponents, while Holm (144) and Eli Higgins took forfeits. Against Postville, it was a 70-9 win for the Warriors with five falls, a decision and six forfeits. Turning opponents for the pin were Thuente (113), Lukas

Fifth at Tripoli Rounding up 124.5 points, the Warriors finished fifth Saturday at the 57th annual Tripoli invitational. Nashua-Plainfield took home the team title with 277 points, followed by Wapsie Valley with 207. South Winn had two individuals in the finals, finishing runner-up. Holm suffered his first loss in his senior campaign in the finals against Denver’s Boden White by a 4-2 decision. In his only other match of the day, Holm pinned Devon Blanchard of Nashua-Plainfield in 2:48 in the semifinal. Timp was also in the championship bout. In the quarterfinal, the Warrior senior took 28 seconds to pin Greyson Miller of Wapsie Valley and secured a 10-6 decision in the semifinal against Grant Henderson of Sumner-Fredericksburg. Nashua-Plainfield’s Aiden Sullivan edged Timp in the final by a 8-5 decision for the 215-pound title. Finishing with bronze were Feickert (113), Schnuelle (150) and Kuboushek (165). Busy week ahead The Warriors will host Crestwood for a dual Tuesday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m., before heading to Clayton Ridge Thursday, Jan. 11, for the second-half of the UIC team duals at 6 p.m.

Overtime loss A five-point halftime lead wasn’t enough cushion for the Trojans as Riceville (3-7) battled back in the second half to tie the score in regulation and took the 59-57 win in overtime Thursday. With the score 10-9 after the opening quarter in favor of the Wildcats, Turkey Valley stepped it up in the second to carry a 2621 lead into halftime. Riceville cut into that lead to three in the third, making it 38-35 as the Trojans fought to maintain control. However, the Wildcats not only took the fourth quarter to force overtime but outlasted the visitors for the two-point victory. Caleb Kurtenbach poured in 15 points to go with three rebounds to lead the Trojans. Braylen Byrne and Logan Busta put up 10 points apiece with Byrne grabbing nine rebounds and three steals. Busta added seven assists to the stat sheet. JD Kruse was active around the basket pulling down five boards.

UIC road game Friday was yet another battle as the Trojans wrangled with Class 1A No. 8 Kee (12-0, 8-0 UIC) on the road, falling 78-49. The Hawks set the pace in the first quarter to lead 24-10. Turkey Valley nearly equaled Kee in the second in scoring 16 points but continued to trail 4126 as the two teams went into the locker rooms. In the third, the Kee defense buckled down on the Trojans, holding the visitors to just eight points and going on top 61-34. Three Trojan seniors scored in the double figures. Kurtenbach put up 13 points, while Braylen Byrne added 11 and Oliver Schmitt provided 10. Off the rim Russell Nieman and Logan Busta each nabbed six rebounds with Busta and Schmitt added five steals apiece.

New scholarship honors farmer who dedicated career to conservation

High school students in northeast Iowa who plan to pursue agriculture-related studies after graduation are encouraged to apply for Iowa Farm Bureau’s Robert H. Rewoldt Scholarship. This new scholarship awards two students $3,000, renewable for two years, up to $6,000. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a two or four-year agriculture-related program at an Iowa-based institution and reside in one of the following

counties: Allamakee, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Chickasaw, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Howard or Winneshiek. Robert H. Rewoldt, a Bremer County farmer, was a passionate advocate for agriculture and conservation. This scholarship honors his legacy by supporting the education of young individuals who embody his values of hard work, dedication to agriculture and stewardship of the

land. The scholarship aims to bolster rural communities by encouraging recipients to apply their skills and knowledge in northeast Iowa upon graduation.

Bull Bash gives $10,000 to county’s Firemen’s Association

The Winneshiek Firemen’s Bull Bash committee recently presented a check in the amount of $10,000 to the Winneshiek County Firemen’s Association. Over the past 15 years, over $73,000 has been given to the association to use at its discretion. Funds raised by the Winneshiek Firemen’s Bull Bash have provided much needed support for area fire departments. This year’s funds will support training and equipment for Electric Vehicle battery fires. Currently, one of the greatest risks is thermal runaway of a battery in an all-electric vehicle. These fires are hard to put out, because

the battery is located under the vehicle and is encased in a shell that prevents water penetration and damage from crashes. It is even more difficult if the car is located in a garage when the short happens. If these batteries short out or have severe damage, the batteries could cause an electrical fire that continues to build. Keeping Winneshiek County Fire and EMS personnel safe is key to helping those injured in an accident. The public is encouraged to show their appreciation for volunteer firefighters at the next Winneshiek Firemen’s Bull Bash on Friday, June 7.

Iowa Museum Association (IMA) Executive Director Cynthia Sweet announced that Janet Bodensteiner and Kathryn Kuennen of the German American Museum, Library and Family History Center in St. Lucas have been chosen to be part of the 24-month learning group utilizing a national-level museum staff training program. As the leading authority on the museum industry in Iowa for almost 50 years, the IMA has offered a range of programs to support museums in building their organizational capacity. One such program is STEPSIMA, a learning cohort utilizing the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) STEPS curriculum that supports museums in meeting national museum standards. The purpose of STEPS-IMA is to provide content, training, mentoring and peer support to enable Iowa museums to work toward basic, good or better standards as defined in a national curriculum, and thus better serve their communities as stewards, educational partners and community anchor organizations. The STEPS-IMA provides professional development for staff and volunteer leaders who grow in capacity to serve their organization, grow their network of colleagues and form attachments with dedicated mentors. Each participating museum grows in key areas of learning, develops basic museum policies or documents based on organizational needs. Their training will help the German American Museum grow its capacity to demonstrate good stewardship to donors; improve capacity to demonstrate good governance to community and potential funders; increase the museum’s ability

Deadline approaching for WCCF’s grant cycle

The deadline to submit grant applications to the Winneshiek County Community Foundation’s 2024 grant cycle is Monday, Jan. 15, at 5 p.m. Technical support will be available to applicants until 5 p.m., on Jan. 15. The online grant application can be found on the Community Foundation’s website at www. winneshiekccf.org. Grants are awarded to projects within the program areas of arts and culture, community betterment, education and youth development, environment and animal welfare, health and human service.
