Welcome to The Gavel: 2025 Drake Law School Donor Impact Report. This publication celebrates the remarkable community that empowers Drake University Law School — our alumni, faculty, staff, and partners whose generosity, mentorship, and advocacy sustain our mission. We recognize and thank all who contribute their time, talent, and resources to ensure that Drake Law continues to thrive.
This year marks 160 years of excellence in legal education at Drake Law. That milestone is more than a number — it’s a reflection of generations of leaders, scholars, and advocates who have advanced justice, strengthened communities, and elevated the legal profession. The name The Gavel pays tribute to the student newspaper that once chronicled the voices of our community and symbolizes the
enduring spirit of leadership and engagement that defines Drake Law today.
The past year has been one of growth, innovation, and momentum. This fall, we welcomed 142 firstyear students — our largest entering class since 2011. In 2024, we had a remarkable 40% increase in applications and another 17% rise in 2025. These trends speak to the growing recognition of the value and impact of a Drake Law education.
Our outcomes remain strong. Drake Law is again ranked among the top 100 law schools nationally by U.S. News & World Report , with 94% of the class of 2024 employed in positions requiring or preferring a JD within 10 months of graduation. Our graduates continue to excel on the bar exam, achieving an average 89% overall pass rate over the past three years.

We are also developing a new strategic plan, built around five guiding pillars — Sustained Investment, Excellence and Inclusion, Place of Big Ideas, External Engagement, and Leadership. This plan will guide us as we strengthen our programs, foster innovation, and expand opportunities for students and faculty alike.
Your generosity makes this progress possible. Every scholarship awarded, every new course developed, and every student success celebrated reflects your belief in this institution. We are building on 160 years of tradition while shaping the next century of excellence at Drake Law. Together, we will continue to do great things.
With gratitude,
Roscoe Jones, Jr., Dean and Professor of Law Drake University Law School

The past year has been one of remarkable momentum for Drake Law. From new academic programs to national recognitions and signature events that brought our community together, these moments reflect the strength and spirit of our students, alumni, faculty, and friends. Here are some of the highlights you helped make possible.

The Dean’s Speaker Series on Leadership in the Legal Profession continues to bring nationally recognized leaders to campus for conversations that connect legal education with real-world leadership. In just the past year, the series has welcomed mayors, state supreme court justices, business executives, state and federal legislators, a national security lawyer, and other distinguished public servants — including a state attorney general — and will soon welcome a former White House official and the co-host of a popular podcast about the U.S. Supreme Court and the legal culture that surrounds it. Guest speakers, interviewed in a fireside chat format, reflect on their personal journeys, challenges, opportunities, and strategies for effective leadership.
In spring 2025, the program Leadership in Corporate America featured Natalie Lamarque, former
Executive Vice President, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary at Principal Financial Group, and Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. (JO'91, JD'92), President & CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management. Their lively discussion offered practical wisdom, personal insight, and powerful inspiration for students preparing to lead in law and business.
The fall 2025 event, themed Leadership and Civility in the Legal Profession, highlighted public servants whose careers exemplify integrity and impact. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison shared lessons from a lifetime in civil rights and public service; Renn Gade (LA'82, JD'85) offered a rare perspective on national security and intelligence law; and Dennis Taylor (BN'71, JD'74) reflected on a career spanning public administration and international development.

The conversation continues in spring 2026 with Rule of Law and Preserving Democracy, featuring Stuart Delery, partner at Gibson Dunn and former White House Counsel, and Melissa Murray, NYU Law professor, women’s leadership expert, and co-host of the acclaimed Strict Scrutiny podcast.
Through these events, Drake Law connects students with the visionaries shaping law, leadership, and justice today.

Artificial Intelligence is transforming industries, governments, and daily life. Drake University Law School is ensuring its students are ready to lead that future. This year, Drake launched its innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Law Certificate Program, positioning students at the forefront of one of the most significant shifts in modern legal practice.
From his first day on campus, Dean Roscoe Jones, Jr. made AI advancement a strategic priority, starting with the creation of the Law School’s AI Task Force. “Thanks to Dean Jones’ leadership, we can offer this unique opportunity to Drake Law students,” said Sayoko BlodgettFord, program director and Sease Faculty Research Scholar.
Dean Jones added, “The AI Law Certificate empowers students to lead at the intersection of law and technology — whether in private practice, government, nonprofit, policymaking, or academia.
AI isn’t just changing industries; it’s reshaping governance, ethics, and the very framework of legal systems. At Drake Law, we prepare our students with the insight, rigor, and vision needed to meet this moment.”
The certificate stands out for its interdisciplinary approach, drawing on partnerships from across campus and beyond. Collaborators include the Institute for Justice Reform & Innovation; Drake’s pioneering undergraduate AI program led by Dr. Christopher Porter; and faculty whose expertise bridges law, technology, and the arts.
Open to second- and third-year JD students, the program emphasizes hands-on, forward-looking learning. “From exploring color and object theory in machine vision and trademark law, to analyzing quantum computing threats in cybersecurity, we push students to look past the
headlines and deeply examine AI’s promises and risks,” said Professor Blodgett-Ford.
Students are already seeing the payoff. “The AI Law Certificate is an amazing opportunity,” said 3L Nicholas Romano. “Working on realworld scenarios gave me directly transferable skills. I feel much more prepared to advocate for AI-related legal issues — and I’m so happy Drake is leading the charge.”
With AI accelerating change across the legal landscape, Drake Law isn’t just keeping pace. It’s preparing graduates who will shape what comes next.

JACK NORTON, CLASS OF 2026
As part of Drake Law’s new AI Law Certificate program, 3L Jack Norton completed an innovative Individual Study that merged law, technology, and studio art. Guided by Professor Sayoko Blodgett-Ford and collaborating with Professor Jamey Hart from Drake’s Art and Design Department, Jack examined how AI and machine vision interpret color in trademark law — particularly in products like Nexium, known for its distinctive purple hue.
To inform his legal research, Jack enrolled in Painting I, where handson work with color theory shaped how he analyzed machine perception.
“Observational painting offered such a unique and fresh perspective,” Jack said. “It helped me better understand how AI ‘sees’ the world and what that means for intellectual property law.”

The project strengthened Jack's interest in AI and IP work. “AI is
In Professor Sayoko BlodgettFord’s Privacy and Cybersecurity Advanced Writing class, 3L Nicole Frazier tackled a cuttingedge question in law today: how autonomous surgical robots might one day support trauma care on the battlefield — and what happens if those robots fall into the wrong hands.
Her paper examined the promise and risks of emerging surgical robotics, from treating timesensitive injuries in combat zones to the privacy and cybersecurity threats posed if such a device were captured. Nicole also analyzed the complex legal landscape governing Department
of Defense procurement, focusing on data protection requirements and proposing recommendations tied to security regulations.
“The project showed me how interconnected law, science, and business really are,” Nicole said. “Privacy and cybersecurity are constant in their goals but dynamic in their methods. There’s always something new to consider in an ever-changing world.”
Nicole’s research deepened her interest in privacy and cybersecurity law, and she recently had the opportunity to speak at the Iowa Intellectual
everywhere,” he said. “Whatever area of law we practice, we need to be ready for the questions clients will bring. This program helped me build that foundation.”

“It’s so important for law students to understand IP and AI because they touch every practice area,” she said. “Being open to new possibilities and advocating for yourself and others can lead to incredible opportunities.”
Distinguished Lecturers in 2024-2025.
2024 CONSTITUTION DAY LECTURE:
Guy-Uriel E. Charles, the 2024 Order of the Coif Distinguished Visitor and Charles Ogletree, Jr. Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, delivered the 2024 Constitution Day Lecture, Charting the Future: Equality at the End of the Civil Rights Consensus. His remarks challenged students and scholars to consider how the nation’s evolving understanding of equality will shape the next era of civil rights.

Hon. Leondra Kruger, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California, joined Constitutional Law Center Director Mark Kende and Dean Roscoe Jones for a fireside chat reflecting on her path to the bench, her approach to judicial decision-making, and the role of state supreme courts in shaping justice. Before joining the California Supreme Court, Justice Kruger served in senior roles at the U.S. Department of Justice and argued 12 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court — earning the Attorney General’s highest honor twice. A former Yale Law Journal Editor-in-Chief and clerk to Justice John Paul Stevens, she was also widely regarded as a leading contender on President Biden’s Supreme Court shortlist.
2025 SYMPOSIUM:
The 2025 Constitutional Law Center Symposium, A Global Comparison of Presidential Immunity in Democracies, examined how nations balance accountability and executive authority. Featured speakers included Penelope Andrews (New York Law School), Carlos Bernal (University of Dayton and former Justice of the Colombian Constitutional Court), Stephen Vladeck (Georgetown Law), and Kieran Williams (Drake University).
Todd Pettys, Interim Dean and Professor of Law at the University of Iowa College of Law, explored the provocative theme Abusing the Right to Speak. His lecture examined how First Amendment protections can be stretched—and sometimes weaponized—in today’s polarized discourse.
Drake University Law School continues to earn national recognition as a leader in shaping the next generation of lawyers and advocates. Over the past year, National Jurist’s preLaw magazine once again spotlighted Drake among the nation’s best in multiple disciplines, honoring the Law School for excellence in:
• Child and Family Law
• Criminal Law
• Government Law
• Human Rights Law
• Trial Advocacy
• Practical Training
• Women in Leadership
Drake Law is proud to be ranked among the top 100 law schools nationwide by U.S. News & World Report — only the third time in our history and the third consecutive year achieving this distinction. This ranking reflects our students’ strong bar passage success and outstanding employment outcomes. Our Legal Writing program continues its long-standing position in the top 20 nationally, and our clinics rank within the top third of all U.S. law schools, underscoring the depth and quality of our experiential education. The Law School also earned recognition from The Princeton Review as one of the nation’s Best Law Schools.
As a premier capital city law school, Drake offers students unmatched access to the courts, legislature, and legal community — turning classroom learning into real-world experience. These honors affirm what our community already knows: at Drake Law, excellence isn’t just recognized — it’s lived every day.

Fiscal year 2025 marked the conclusion of Drake’s most successful fundraising campaign in the University’s history — The Ones: Drake’s Campaign for the Brave & Bold The Law School played a powerful role in this success, exceeding its $20 million goal and raising over $23 million to support scholarships, faculty excellence, and student programs.
The gifts below represent just a sampling of the transformational support that helped the Law School surpass its campaign goal and expand opportunities for students, faculty, and the communities we serve:
• Sheldon (JD'76) and Terry Fleck (PH'74) established the Sheldon T. and Terry K. Fleck Endowed Law Scholarship, creating the Fleck Scholar Program — a renewable, full-tuition merit scholarship with an annual stipend awarded to one entering student each year.
• Karen Shaff (JD'79) and Steven Jayne (JD'78) secured the future of the Drake Law Refugee
Clinic with a permanent endowment that ensures ongoing legal services for asylum seekers and vital training for second- and thirdyear student attorneys.
• A leadership gift from McKee, Voorhees & Sease, PLC established the Edmund J. Sease Faculty Research Scholar, supporting faculty excellence and innovation in legal education.
• Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. (JO'91, JD'92 ) made the capstone gift that pushed Drake Law to its elevated goal of $23 million.
The Law School’s success in The Ones campaign reflects the commitment of alumni, friends, and partners who believe deeply in the impact of a Drake Law education. Their generosity ensures students have the resources, mentorship, and opportunities to become the next generation of leaders, advocates, and innovators.
Drake Law School extends heartfelt gratitude to every donor who helped make this historic campaign a resounding success.

If you told Scott Wadding (JD'10) at his graduation that he would become a champion for children’s justice, he might have been surprised. What he did know was that Drake Law School gave him the knowledge and tools he needed to thrive in a legal career.
“I worked hard during law school. I had cowritten appellate briefs and participated as a student attorney in a jury trial, a bench trial, and an oral argument in the Iowa Court of Appeals. I felt confident, ready to go,” Scott said. “My Drake Law education gave me the confidence to step into the courtroom and advocate for clients the minute I graduated.”
That confidence took him far. After clerking for Justice Brent Appel of the Iowa Supreme Court, Scott practiced high-stakes intellectual property, business tort, and constitutional law in Kansas City. In 2017, he returned to Iowa to build a practice at Sease & Wadding.
“There was a whole world that I didn’t know existed at the time. But I saw that these children needed an advocate who would put in the work, peel back the layers, make one more call, ask one more question.”
Scott Wadding, JD'10
To reacclimate himself to the local legal landscape, Scott signed up for court-appointed cases in Dallas County. “I had been away from Iowa courts for a while and wanted to get back in Iowa courtrooms to get a feel for the county courthouses,” he explained.
“I felt there was no better way to do it than jump on the court-appointed list and represent folks from all walks of life who couldn’t otherwise afford a lawyer.”
Fate intervened immediately. One of his assigned cases set off a series of events that can only be described as "straight out of an episode of Law & Order," eventually leading him to represent the siblings of Sabrina Ray, a 16-year-old whose death in 2017 reinforced the need for continued evaluation and improvement of Iowa’s child welfare system. Despite the legal and factual complexities of the case, Scott relied on his training.
“There was a whole world that I didn’t know existed at the time,” Scott reflected. “But I saw that these children needed an advocate who would put in the work, peel back the layers, make one more call, ask one more question.”
After the case concluded, Scott was determined to honor Sabrina Ray and ensure “something good comes out of this tragedy.” With support from his firm, he established the Sabrina Ray Endowed Fund to benefit student attorneys in the Drake Children’s Rights Clinic.
The fund supports two initiatives that directly impact students and children alike: the Ray of Hope Award, recognizing a Children’s Rights Clinic student whose advocacy inspires hope, and the Sabrina Ray Justice for Children Summer Fellowship, which provides stipends for students to pursue internships with child-focused organizations and attend national training conferences. By removing financial barriers, the fellowship ensures that passionate students can dedicate themselves fully to protecting society’s most vulnerable.
“I know it isn’t just an intellectual exercise for these students,” said Scott. “They know they are helping real children, with real issues, who need a real advocate. And those students will be a part of Sabrina Ray’s legacy as they go out and continue to be the voice for children who not only need but deserve one.”

For Anjie Shutts (JD'96) and Peter Kitundu (JD'00), Drake Law is where their story began and where their shared commitment to service continues to grow. The couple met on Peter’s second day of law school, forming a partnership built on mutual respect, a love for the law, and a belief in giving back.
Anjie, a shareholder at Whitfield & Eddy, has built a distinguished career marked by professional excellence and community engagement. She was named Drake Law Alumna of the Year in 2025, recognizing her outstanding leadership in the legal profession and her long-standing support of the Law School. Anjie currently serves on the Drake Law Board of Counselors, continuing her history of service that began in the early 2000s.
Peter is Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer at Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, where he leads the company’s ethics, privacy, and compliance programs, as well as its Special Investigations and Special Inquiries teams. A committed supporter of Drake Law, Peter also serves on the Board of Counselors, where he helps guide
the school’s strategic direction — continuing his service that began shortly after his graduation.
Over the years, Peter and Anjie have remained steadfast supporters of Drake Law’s mission. They contribute annually to the Law School Annual Fund and scholarship programs, host student gatherings in their home, and serve as mentors to current students navigating the early stages of their careers.
“Drake Law gave us so much — not just an education, but a community that’s been part of our lives ever since,” Peter said. “Supporting students and staying involved feels like the most natural way to give back.”
“Drake Law taught us the importance of using our skills to serve others,” Anjie added. “We’re proud to invest in the next generation of lawyers who will continue that tradition.”
Together, Anjie and Peter embody the spirit of Drake Law — generous, engaged, and deeply committed to helping others succeed.
When Maggie Ferrentino (AS'06, JD'13) chose Drake Law, her decision came down to something simple and practical: graduating with less debt. “I went back and forth between going to the ‘best’ school I could get into or the one where I’d come out with the least amount of debt,” she said. “Drake offered me a generous scholarship package so I chose the latter — and it turned out to be the best decision I could have made.”
What began as a financial choice quickly became a lifechanging experience. “I didn’t realize until I got here how many incredible opportunities Drake Law offers,” she said. “The hands-on training, the access to courts, agencies, and firms right here in Des Moines — it’s unmatched. I felt ready to practice law the day I passed the bar.”
Drake didn’t just prepare Maggie for her career; it shaped nearly every part of her life. She found mentors who invested in her success and lifelong friends who still cheer her on.
“Other than my parents, Drake has probably had the biggest influence on where I am today,” she said.
That gratitude inspired her to include Drake Law in her estate plans, a way to make a meaningful impact without changing her current finances. “I just made Drake a partial beneficiary of my life insurance,” she explained. “It took five minutes, and it lets me make a gift I couldn’t afford otherwise at this point in my career.”
Maggie hopes her future gift will help another student make the same smart — and life-changing — choice she made. “I wouldn’t have come to Drake without the scholarship I received,” she said. “That decision opened every door for me. I want someone else to have that same chance.”

“I just made Drake a partial beneficiary of my life insurance. It took five minutes, and it lets me make a gift I couldn’t afford otherwise at this point in my career.”

CEDRIC ADAMS
For Cedric Adams (JD'17), giving back isn’t about recognition — it’s about gratitude. Drake Law opened the door to a legal career he once doubted was possible. “Drake gave me an opportunity and the tools to succeed,” he said. “I learned that with hard work, dedication, determination, and resilience, anything is possible.”
Now Claims Manager for the Washington State Transit Insurance Pool, Cedric oversees complex claims and leads with the same values he learned at Drake: fairness, equity, and responsibility.
Those values were shaped by the people and experiences that defined his time on campus — Professors Anthony Gaughan and Shontavia Johnson, long hours with his Drake Law Library family, peers who became lifelong friends, and handson work from clinics to internships to running athletic events. “When you find your niche, as I did at Drake, work can be challenging, rewarding, and enjoyable.”
Since graduating, Cedric has given $100 to the Law School Annual Fund for each year since graduation ($100 his first year out, $200 the second, $300 the third, and so on), earning him Associate President’s Circle status every year.
His motivation traces back to a single moment of generosity. When Cedric received the K.M. Waggoner Peer Mentoring Award at the 2017 Supreme Court Banquet, award sponsor and fellow alumnus Philip De Koster (JD’10) encouraged him to pay it forward. “I’m still paying student loans,” Cedric laughed, “but Drake accepted me, challenged me, encouraged me. I hope the small amount I can afford helps ensure today’s students feel the same sense of support and possibility I did.”
Through his steady generosity, year after year, Cedric is helping ensure future Drake Law students find their footing, find their people, and find the moments that shape a lifetime. His advice to recent graduates: stay connected, stay generous, and don’t wait for a reunion to reach out. “It’s a small world. A friendly face and shared experience can go a long way. When one of us succeeds, we all succeed.”

From courtroom battles to classroom breakthroughs, Professor Sally Frank has spent her career turning principles into action. A trailblazer in equality, civil rights, and community advocacy, her influence has shaped generations of Drake lawyers. This year, two major honors celebrated the depth of her impact.
Princeton University recently named a campus café in Professor Frank’s honor, recognizing her landmark sexdiscrimination case challenging the university’s all-male eating clubs. She began that fight at just 19 years old as an undergraduate; 13 years later, as a young professor at Drake Law, she saw it through to a precedent-setting victory for gender equity on Princeton’s campus.
Closer to home, Professor Frank was named a 2025 Woman of Influence by the Des Moines Business Record, celebrating her decades of leadership, mentorship, and advocacy in Iowa. Through her litigation, guidance, community work, and unwavering commitment to her students, she continues to inspire future lawyers to not only understand the law, but to use it for meaningful change.
PROFESSOR HUNTER R. CLARK
Drake Law School proudly celebrates the retirement of Professor Hunter R. Clark, whose extraordinary 33-year career has shaped generations of students and strengthened the Law School’s commitment to justice, scholarship, and inclusion.
Joining the faculty in 1993, Professor Clark became the first Black tenured professor in Drake Law’s history — a milestone that opened doors for others to follow. A noted scholar on Justices Thurgood Marshall and William Brennan, his work deepened national understanding of two of the Supreme Court’s most enduring champions of justice.
Professor Clark credits both the Law School’s evolution and Des Moines’ growth for keeping him rooted here for more than three decades.
At Drake, Professor Clark built and led the International Law and Global Citizenship Certificate program, helping to position the Law School as a national leader in human rights education. Through his teaching in International Law, Human Rights, and the U.S. Supreme Court, he challenged students to think critically, question assumptions, and approach the law as a force for global good.
Reflecting on his time at Drake, Professor Clark credits both the Law School’s evolution and Des Moines’ growth for keeping him rooted here for more than three decades. “When I arrived, Drake was primarily focused on producing trial lawyers,” he said. “Over time, it opened up to the world, globalized, and gained the national recognition it deserves.”
Professor Clark’s legacy is one of intellect, integrity, and inspiration. As a mentor and colleague, he strengthened the Drake Law community through wisdom, humility, and unwavering faith in the power of education to transform lives.

At Drake Law, faculty achievements reflect not only individual expertise but also a shared commitment to academic excellence, community engagement, and legal innovation. Each award, publication, appointment, and grant highlights how your support empowers our faculty to lead in their fields and offer transformative learning experiences for our students.

Meet the accomplished professionals who recently joined the Drake Law faculty. These newest members of our community offer expertise that bolsters our curriculum and strengthens student experience.
Kristi
With nearly 20 years of legal experience, Kristi Harshbarger has built a career at the intersection of law and public service. A proud Drake Law alumna (JD'06) and University of Iowa journalism graduate, Harshbarger combines sharp legal insight with a passion for advocacy.
Her journey began at BrownWinick, where she spent five years navigating complex secured transactions — often tied to Iowa’s ethanol and biodiesel industries — while also advising clients on estate planning and business law.
Dean Strang,
In 2011, Harshbarger took her expertise to the Iowa State Association of Counties, a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening local government. As General Counsel, she became the go-to legal resource for county officials statewide, guiding them through compliance challenges and legislative changes. Beyond legal counsel, Harshbarger championed education and training initiatives that empower Iowa’s counties to serve their communities effectively.
From courtroom strategy to policy advocacy, Harshbarger’s work
Dean Strang brings a blend of courtroom experience, teaching, and scholarship to his role at Drake Law School. His distinguished career spans five years as Wisconsin’s first Federal Defender, private criminal defense work, and visiting professorships at several law schools, most recently as Distinguished Professor in Residence at Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
He has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, five federal Courts of Appeal, and the Wisconsin Supreme Court. A co-founder of the Center for Integrity in Forensic Sciences
and a member of the American Law Institute since 2004, Strang has long championed fairness and integrity in the justice system.
Strang is the author of two books on legal history: Keep the Wretches in Order: America’s Biggest Mass Trial, the Rise of the Justice Department, and the Fall of the IWW and Worse Than the Devil: Anarchists, Clarence Darrow, and Justice in a Time of Terror He has written and co-authored numerous law review articles and book chapters as well. Strang is widely recognized for his role in a trial featured in Netflix’s Making a

Drake Law students are driven to make a difference both in and beyond the classroom. Their dedication is bolstered by an alumni and legal community that provides support in countless ways, from mentoring and networking opportunities to providing handson practical experience and funding programs and scholarships. This support empowers students to lead change within the Law School and excel through practical, real-world experiences that shape their education and future careers.

Imagine a world where consumer rights are ignored and market power goes unchecked. That’s the world the Consumer and Antitrust Law Club is working to change. Founded to help students explore careers in these vital fields, the club combines intensive networking, education, and professional development to prepare members for meaningful work in corporate accountability and economic fairness.
The club was founded by 3L Anna Olson whose personal experience ignited a passion for the field. “While an undergraduate intern for the Iowa Attorney General and a U.S. Senator, I developed a deep interest in the field,” Anna explained. “Those experiences showed me how consumer protection shapes everyday life and advances economic justice. I founded the club to build a
student community around this area of law.”
Although newly established, the club has already achieved an impressive milestone: recognition as a Consumer Law Advocate Student and Scholar organization. This designation links members to the National Association of Consumer Advocates and the UC Berkeley Center for Consumer Law and Economic Justice, giving them direct access to a national network of experts and resources for career development.

Through regular discussions, members are encouraged to “pursue economic justice careers, connect with nationally recognized programs, and explore scholarships and fellowships.” Another member noted that being part of this club has shown them how law can make a real difference in people’s lives. They believe the connections and opportunities are already shaping their career path.
The Consumer and Antitrust Law Club is transforming student passion for justice into practical, career-shaping action, ensuring that Drake Law students are ready to be the next generation of consumer advocates.
Formed in spring 2025, the Drake Sports and Entertainment Law Society (SELS) is giving students a front-row seat to the dynamic world of sports, media, and entertainment law. The group connects students with hands-on experiences and professional networks, helping them

explore a field where contracts, civil rights, and advocacy intersect with their passions.
Spencer Warfield, a 3L from Peoria, Illinois, is a co-founder and currently serves as president of SELS. A former Division III football player and theatre scholarship recipient at Augustana College, Spencer came to Drake Law to combine his love of performance and athletics with a first-rate legal education. Along with co-founders Mason Holland, Kelly Donnellan, Will Terry, and David Wade, he saw a clear need for a
student outlet in this rapidly evolving area of law. “The time for sports and entertainment law is now, and SELS is the student body’s response to that,” Spencer said. “We’re thrilled to be in on the ground floor where we can blaze a trail for the Bulldogs who come after us.”
Already, SELS has fielded its first teams for the University of Iowa NCAA Infractions Hearing Competition and connected members to opportunities with Drake and Iowa State athletics compliance departments and the

Iowa Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.
Dean Roscoe Jones celebrated the launch, noting, “This new organization empowers students to explore the complex legal issues shaping sports, media, and the arts — a field that connects passion, performance, and policy. As a former student-athlete, I'm especially proud to support the launch of SELS at Drake Law.”

By Mackenzie Roberts, Class of 2026
After my 1L year, I felt burnt out. The cold calls, casebooks, and curve-induced self-doubt had me wondering if the version of me who came to law school — driven by a desire to fight for others — had gotten lost somewhere along the way. Then I joined the Children’s Rights Clinic, and everything changed.
The clinic gave me more than practical experience. It gave me purpose again. I worked directly with children whose lives were shaped by systems that often failed them, and suddenly everything I had learned in the classroom took on weight. Every motion, every phone call, every hearing mattered. I wasn’t just a student — I was an advocate.
I learned how to center the client in every decision, to listen deeply,
and to adapt strategies to meet their needs. Some days were emotionally heavy, but through Professor Nickole Miller’s guidance and team debriefs, I realized that empathy isn’t a liability in this profession — it’s a strength.
Most importantly, the clinic reconnected me with the reason I came to law school in the first place: to stand beside vulnerable people navigating complicated systems and to use the law as a tool for empowerment. Saying goodbye to clients who were genuinely sad to see us go reminded me that even small efforts can make a hard situation just a little less hard. That’s the kind of impression I hope to keep making throughout my career.
This experience didn’t just prepare me for the future — it renewed my belief in it. And for that, I am deeply grateful.
The Board of Counselors is a group of alumni who serve as advisors to the dean. They meet three times each academic year to discuss issues and promote the interests of Drake Law School.
