My 2026 Sturgis Rally B Y D O N E M D E

A

s always, this year’s Sturgis Rally was a massive gathering of motorcyclists, just as they have been doing since Clarence “Pappy” Hoel and his wife Pearl got it started there in South Dakota’s Black Hills in August of 1937. Most of the hundreds of thousands of riders were Harley mounted, with others on Indians and various metric bikes. Usually, my trips to the Rally have involved both riding and making business connections with many leaders in the motorcycle industry

and aftermarket. The riding part didn’t come together this year, but I was there on business and two very special events. On Monday, August 10th, I was at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame on Main Street for a day that is annually dedicated to women in motorcycling, both from the past and currently. The event is appropriately named “Pearl’s Jam,” in honor of Pappy Hoel’s supportive wife Pearl. She worked behind the scenes back in the early years to help her husband with his successful annual event. This year, I was invited to make a presentation there about my mother, Florence. She played a similar supporting role with my father, starting in the late-1930s when he began his legendary motorcycle racing career. By the 1950s, their constant road trips to races around the country had been replaced by the opportunity to start a motorcycle retail business in the San Diego area. They eventually had a three-store operation going until they retired in 1980.

Telling the story of Florence Emde at Pearl’s Jam.

Two days after Pearl’s Jam, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame held its annual Hall of Fame induction breakfast at the Lodge at Deadwood. One of this year’s inductees was none other than Paul Langley, Chairman and CEO of LeMans Corporation (parent company of Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited). Most of you probably know that Paul was hand-picked by the late founder of LeMans, Fred Fox, to lead the company forward when Fred knew the time had come for him to pass the torch. His choice to hire Paul was not made without many years of knowing and working with him at companies that LeMans did business with – Dynojet, SuperTrapp, Vance & Hines and S&S Cycle.

Proud to stand next to Paul after his Hall of Fame induction.

Still an avid motorcyclist, Paul’s focus throughout his successful career has been about performance. He was quoted recently, saying: “It’s always been about making things better, faster, and more efficient for the person in the saddle.” I was happy to be there for Paul’s induction to the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. I know Fred Fox would have been very proud of Paul Langley and pleased to know he made the right decision when he asked him to take the reins at LeMans. ■

NEWS EVENTS On the Ground in Oregon DRAG ROLLS INTO WILLAMETTE VALLEY HARLEY-DAVIDSON OPEN HOUSE Eric Baumgardner photos

T

he Drag Specialties Dealer Open House Program made a Fourth of July weekend stop at Willamette Valley Harley-Davidson in Eugene, Oregon, bringing the Drag truck, industry reps, custom motorcycles and new products together for local customers.

For the dealership, the Drag truck’s visit brought products, brands and product knowledge together in one place. For customers, it offered a chance to turn ideas for their motorcycles into plans for what comes next. ■

The visit was a natural fit for a dealership and riding community built around parts, performance and motorcycles made for real miles. Eugene sits at the edge of the Cascades, with McKenzie Pass and the Oregon Coast within a morning’s ride. Riders in the area build their motorcycles for those roads, whether that means adding comfort for long days, performance for mountain riding, or accessories suited for changing Oregon weather. Drag rep Benny Harwell and Drag RSM Eric Baumgardner joined the dealership crew for the event along with Ryan Evans of Progressive Suspension, Justin Masri of Saddlemen and Tom Trobaugh of Vance & Hines. Riders could check out the Drag truck, talk directly with product specialists and check out products from GBrakes, Progressive Suspension, Saddlemen, THRASHIN’ and Vance & Hines. The motorcycles provided plenty to see, too. The display included a selection of FatBook customs along with FatBook and OldBook cover bikes, giving customers a close-up look at builds featuring products available through Drag Specialties. More important, the stop gave riders a chance to do some hands-on research for their own motorcycles. Customers could sit on seats, handle products, compare options and talk with Drag representatives and the Willamette Valley Harley-Davidson Parts team about their next build. “Our customers know what they want on their motorcycle,” Parts Manager Shalee LaCount said. “Having the truck here meant they could put their hands on it, ask the right questions, and walk out with a plan instead of a maybe.” The Drag Truck Takeover added to the Fourth of July weekend activity with food, a bike wash, custom motorcycles and a loudmouth competition. The event drew a strong turnout as riders spent the afternoon talking bikes, checking out parts and accessories and getting ideas for future projects. Willamette Valley Harley-Davidson has served riders in Eugene since 2018. Owners Bob Thomas and Joshua Sklaroff operate the dealership as part of the Willamette Valley Motoplex campus, which also includes Indian and Royal Enfield motorcycles and Polaris Off-Road.

The Mission King of the Baggers lineup brought Harley-Davidson and Indian racers together at Laguna Seca for two races in the summer championship run.

T

he Mission King of the Baggers championship continued its summer run with back-to-back rounds at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in California and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Ohio. Across four races, Harley-Davidson and Indian riders traded wins while Hayden Gillim strengthened his hold on the championship. At Laguna Seca July 10-12, Harley-Davidson x Dynojet Factory Racing’s Bradley Smith scored his first King of the Baggers victory. Troy Herfoss grabbed the early Race 1 lead aboard his J&P Cycles/Motul/Vance & Hines Factory Indian, but Smith made his move and pulled away to win by more than four seconds.

Herfoss finished second with teammate and championship leader Gillim third after Tyler O’Hara ran wide while attempting to take second from Herfoss on the final trip through the Corkscrew. The Harley-Davidson factory team returned to the front in Race 2. Kyle Wyman and Smith jumped into first and second and stayed there, with Wyman taking his first Baggers feature win of the season. Smith finished second and Herfoss took third. The results left Gillim leading Herfoss by 13 points as the series headed east to Mid-Ohio. That trip proved much more productive for Gillim.

The J&P Cycles/Motul/Vance & Hines Factory Indian rider started the Mid-Ohio weekend on pole, but Race 1 was disrupted by a pair of crashes. Wyman went down while leading on lap two, bringing out a red flag. Smith then crashed on the ensuing sighting lap, leading to another stoppage. Both Harley-Davidson riders recorded DNFs. When racing resumed for a shortened five-lap contest, Herfoss took the early lead before Gillim moved past his teammate and pulled away. Gillim won by 3.3 seconds over Herfoss, with Big Diehl x Harley-Davidson Factory Racing’s James Rispoli finishing third.

Fans packed WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca to watch the Mission King of the Baggers field battle through two races at the California circuit.

Race 2 required a comeback. Gillim started from pole but slipped to sixth as Herfoss took the lead. Gillim worked his way through the field, passing Rispoli, O’Hara, Smith and Wyman before closing on his teammate. With three laps remaining, Gillim took the lead in Turn 1. He held off Herfoss to win by just 0.25 of a second and complete the Mid-Ohio sweep. Smith rounded out the podium in third.

Market Momentum MOTORCYCLE SALES CONTINUE 2026 GROWTH

T

he Motorcycle Industry Council is reporting that new motorcycle sales among leading brands increased 1.9 percent through the second quarter of 2026, compared with the same period last year.

“This marks the second consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth, which is encouraging to see,” said Buckner Nesheim, MIC Director of Research and Statistics. “One of the trends we’ll continue watching is the strength of smaller-displacement motorcycles, particularly in cruiser and adventure categories, as the market evolves through the rest of the year.” The latest MIC Tire Sales Report provides another positive indicator, showing a 3.8 percent increase in motorcycle and

scooter replacement tire shipments among leading brands through the first half of 2026. The report tracks tire manufacturer and distributor shipments of replacement tires in the U.S. and does not include shipments to original equipment vehicle manufacturers. “Manufacturers, dealers, and suppliers continue to navigate a complex business environment,” said Christy LaCurelle, MIC President and CEO. “But sustained retail growth and increased replacement tire sales point to continued enthusiasm for riding. We’ll take a closer look at the trends behind these numbers during our upcoming MIC Symposium and discuss what they could mean for the rest of the year.” ■

hen we last left the Drag Specialties Battle of the Baggers Presented by Memphis Shades, the opening rounds at Motorsports Park Hastings had set the stage for a competitive 2026 season. Championship contenders were emerging, new riders were making their mark, and the series was headed to GingerMan Raceway for its next stop. A month later, in late June, the Bagger Racing League arrived in South Haven, Michigan, for Rounds 3 and 4. This time, a number of riders left little room for doubt. Tucker Speed’s Seth Dahmer delivered a perfect weekend in Andrews Products Bagger GP, winning both races. Drew Jankord finished second overall for the weekend while Cody Gilmore took third.

Foley again found himself battling teammate Jake Masters early before pulling away. Levi Badie finished second in the Pro Stock weekend results with Tony Tucker third. The winning streak continued in Barnett Super Street Bagger, where Shawn Hoffman completed his own GingerMan sweep. Jake McGuire took second in both races and Joe Robinson finished third. There were plenty more sweeps throughout the GingerMan paddock. Bill Kane went undefeated in Drag Specialties Air-Cooled Twins, taking back-to-back victories over Carl Wilhelm. olving customers’ problems today is about more than providing information. It’s about context. A website can provide endless information, but welltrained people can put that information to work. That creates a conversation customers can trust. The LeMans Growth Academy helps turn that idea into practice, giving salespeople training and information they can use to find solutions that fit their customers’ needs. “I’m a big believer that a brand’s responsibility is to create value. A retailer’s responsibility is to communicate value and the distributor’s responsibility is to make sure those products are where they need to be at the right time,” says Kurt Kaufmann, with the LeMans Growth Academy. Sales reps who have been in the industry for years know the value of being on the road and talking with dealers face to face. They also know the time and expense involved.

For Drag Specialties reps, that training can translate directly into more informed conversations with dealers. “The Growth Academy training courses give me better knowledge of the products that I sample to dealers. This includes a lot of good information about the companies and products,” says Nick Stofle, Arizona territory sales rep for Drag Specialties. “I can be specific as to what the item does and why it is relevant. And, I’m able to elaborate on the history of

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

Reps have a lot to keep track of, including hundreds of brands in the FatBook and OldBook, along with their dayto-day sales responsibilities. The LeMans Growth Academy offers another way to deliver product and sales training beyond dealer visits and scheduled webinars. Those meetings still have value, but they do not have to carry the full training load. “The training courses open up a new way to get excited about the product and to improve the conversations I have with salespeople,” says Rudy Muller, a Drag Specialties rep in Colorado. “I feel the courses give dealer personnel more purpose and pride in their work. After taking the course, you feel way more in touch with the company and more confident when talking about their products.” The results can also show up in sales.

“The LeMans Growth Academy was born from experiences out on the road,” adds Kaufmann, who had experience as a brand salesperson visiting dealers and attending events like Sturgis. “The question was not, ‘Hey, is there value in training and supporting both reps and retailers?’ I think the question was, ‘How do we do that at scale?’”

companies and where their products and ideas come from.”

“We’re seeing two-times increase in sales all the way up to 30-times increase in sales,” says Paul Devine, VP of sales and marketing for LeMans Corporation. “This is not going to fix everything. But we’re learning that good dealers use the Growth Academy, and the Growth Academy helps create even better dealers.”

CHANGING THE CONVERSATION Because the training courses are available online, salespeople can view them when their schedules allow. “You don’t have to train the sales staff over and over,” explains Devine. “The Growth Academy can do that for you.” That also makes Growth Academy training part of the regular conversation between reps and dealers.

★ O c t o b e r 2 0 2 6 • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

LEMANS GROWTH ACADEMY

The LeMans Growth Academy gives reps another way to build product knowledge and support dealers with more informed conversations. For dealership staff, flexible online training fits around busy schedules while building the knowledge and confidence to better connect products with customers’ needs.

“I casually ask them if they have learned anything from the modules, then give them examples of what I have learned from the modules,” says Joe Sanderson, a Drag Specialties rep in Ohio. “This creates more interest in getting their employees educated on the products they sell.”

Then we discuss how the product would be beneficial to the dealer,” says Muller. “Oh, and what quizzes stumped us!”

Stofle takes a similar approach, introducing dealership staff to the program and following up during later visits.

Kaufmann knows that it’s easy for salespeople to get frustrated with the current state of retailing, particularly the disconnected nature of online selling. This, he says, is the industry’s chance to do better. For salespeople, this means creating a meaningful experience, better value and more community than customers cannot get simply scrolling through products on a phone.

“I have been starting the conversation with salespeople by showing them the link and how to sign up. I tell them about the perks of the training and benefits to the individual and the dealer,” says Stofle. “When I receive the reports on who has taken courses and who has not, I use that on my next visit and remind them that the courses are there. Usually, they haven’t finished because they had a customer or something urgent to take care of and forget to go back in. Once they realize that there is great information in there and it’s relevant, they are excited to complete the training.” Muller also uses completed courses to get sales teams talking about products and how they fit customers’ needs. “When I visit a dealer sales team, I ask what courses they’ve taken. We talk about the company history and the products.

RETAIL SHIFT

“If you are not adding value at your retail store, why would somebody spend the time and effort to go to your brick and mortar to purchase when they can do so from their couch? It’s not that retail is dying, valueless retail is dying,” says Kaufmann. “An online retailer can say, ‘Here are 5,000 options and here’s what’s on sale.’ Online retailers serve a purpose. But the real solution comes from having conversations with customers and improving their experience. Consumers are looking for that.” ■

86 Years and Counting Business stays brisk in the Black Hills

By Marilyn Stemp Photos by Don Emde, Rod Olson and Marilyn Stemp

A

nnual motorcycle rallies, no matter the size or location, tend to share one truth: Anniversary years — the zeroes and fives — draw bigger crowds than those ending in ones and sixes. Some would say that’s the story of the 2026 Sturgis Rally, the 86th annual gathering. But that’s the easy answer, and the easy answer is seldom the whole story. Yes, initial reports from the South Dakota DOT indicate traffic was down 10 percent from last year, and the boots-on-the-ground view suggested a “lighter” Rally. Look a little closer, though, and the picture changes. Vendors reported full install schedules, bike shows posted record numbers and charity events far surpassed prior-year fundraising totals. As always, the Sturgis experience starts on Main Street, with its bike-only parking, city photo platform and vendors lining Lazelle Street. Beyond the usual industry parties and hall of fame meet-ups, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame held its second annual Pearl’s Jam, a celebration of women in motorcycling. Drag Specialties Magazine Publisher and Editor-inChief Don Emde joined the event to speak about his mother, Florence, one of three pioneering women recognized alongside Bessie Stringfield and Mary McGee. Attendees learned that Florence was riding motorcycles well before she met Don’s father, Floyd. Yes, Floyd and Don would become the only father and son to win the Daytona 200, 24 years apart, but none of that might have happened without Florence! The industry’s history was also front and center at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame induction. FDNY firefighter Tim Duffy — the man who rode his Harley into the fray 25 years ago on 9/11 — received the American Hero Award as part of the museum’s 25th anniversary celebration. Duffy also served as the city’s grand marshal. Other notable inductees included John Andrews, Denis Manning, Robert Patrick, Bessie Stringfield, Rusty Wallace, and LeMans Corporation Chairman and CEO Paul Langley. Langley’s career has crossed the aftermarket landscape through leadership roles at Dynojet, Vance & Hines and S&S Cycle, helping shape the V-Twin

performance arena while mentoring others along the way. It was well-deserved recognition! Back on Main Street, Spaz Cycles owner Bill Usher was focused on seats for a broad range of motorcycles, including offerings from Drag Specialties Seats, LePera, Mustang and Saddlemen — all familiar names in the Drag Specialties realm. “Our part number selection is broad,” he said. “We try to have seats for bikes over the last 30 years including Sportsters and FXRs,” said Usher. Also downtown, the Lil Evil Performance Bike Show presented by Nowaskey celebrated its 10th year at the Iron Horse Saloon. The show did more than bring out bikes. Show spearhead Kurt Petersen says, “Through sponsorships and donations we were able to raise $10,000 to support veterans and their families through Magnus Veterans Foundation.” Performance junkies and go-fast gurus had another chance to show off at the Trask Performance Invitational Show at Full

Throttle Saloon. And boy, did the purpose-built machines turn up in droves! Serious players made the scene, putting creativity, craftsmanship and, of course, horsepower on full display. Speaking of horsepower, the ninth annual Baker Drivetrain Drags at Thunder Road Raceway kicked up dust and blew out eardrums as riders on just about anything took their shot at the track. Touted as “powered by the industry and free for the people” and sponsored by Drag Specialties and brands including Andrews and Trask, it was a free-for-all in the best possible way. Then there were the numbers coming out of Sturgis HarleyDavidson. The dealership had an expanded footprint on Junction Avenue, right across from Gas Monkey Garage, and in only its second year selling motorcycles, the store exceeded expectations. Together with sister store Black Hills Harley-Davidson in Rapid City, 1,135 motorcycles were sold — a new all-time Rally record in a year many acknowledged felt smaller.

Simply remarkable! Of course, no trip through the industry side of Sturgis would be complete without a stop at Black Hills Harley-Davidson. Long known as “the Rally at Exit 55,” the dealership once again brought together a long list of brands found in the Drag Specialties FatBook, including Custom Dynamics, ICON, Khrome Werks, Klock Werks, Legend Suspension, Nelson-Rigg, Rekluse, S&S, Saddlemen, Vance & Hines, Wild Ass and Z1R. For riders, that meant plenty of opportunities to check out VTwin products, talk directly with the people behind them and get upgrades installed before heading back into the Black Hills. Suspension, seats, clutch components, performance parts, and protection were all part of the mix, with vendor crews staying busy throughout the Rally. And there was plenty to catch the eye. Saddlemen’s Dylan Jones says some customers buying new motorcycles swapped out the stock seat before even taking possession. Over at Burly, a motorcycle intentionally lying on its side in

front of the booth demonstrated the company’s Brawler Kits and was good for more than a few double takes. Taken together, Exit 55 offered a pretty good snapshot of the V-Twin aftermarket at work: new motorcycles rolling in, parts going on and riders heading back out with bikes a little more their own. In short, Black Hills Harley-Davidson was an all-call for the brands that help make the V-Twin aftermarket run. And maybe that’s the real story of Sturgis in 2026. Traffic numbers might have been down and the streets might have felt a little lighter, but motorcycles were selling, parts were going on bikes, shows were drawing crowds and money was being raised for good causes. Add in the Black Hills riding, industry recognition and the annual gathering of the V-Twin world, and Sturgis still stands tall. One year past the big 85th anniversary, there was definitely plenty of life left in the Rally. ■

Don Emde answered questions following the talk he gave at the museum about women in motorcycling. His father, Floyd, was a well-known pro racer of the 1940s, but this presentation was about his mother Florence, who was recognized for her support of Floyd’s racing career, as well as thirty years more when they became motorcycle dealers. taying competitive in racing means constantly swapping out parts to keep a bike’s performance at its peak. Saddlemen has been racing V-Twin Baggers since 2020, which means the racing department had a lot of spare parts sitting around. Some of those parts wound up on a custom 2021 Harley-Davidson Softail Street Bob, which blends style and performance. The Softail was another one of those “spare parts” after the end of the racing season. “We thought it would be fun to make a ridiculously high-horsepower street motorcycle out of it,” says Saddlemen CEO David Echert. In addition to the in-house racing division, Saddlemen also has seat and bodywork departments. All those aspects came together to create a bike that couples modern West Coast styling with the brutal horsepower of a pro-level race bike. The Softail includes a number of pieces from Saddlemen’s Performance Carbon Fiber line. The front and rear fenders, side covers, dash and coil cover all add a racing-inspired look.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

For this build, the team at Saddlemen opted for the highgloss finish, though the parts are also available in matte. Team Saddlemen competes in King of the Baggers and Super Hooligans, and in the early days of V-Twin racing, performance parts weren’t readily available for the team’s Road Glides. So, Saddlemen launched a carbon fiber department to produce lightweight bodywork for the race bikes. Now, those same parts are available to riders. Each carbon fiber piece in the line is made in-house at Saddlemen’s headquarters in Southern California using matching-weave, aerospace-grade 3K and 12K twill prepreg carbon fiber. Everything is vacuum bagged and cured in an autoclave, resulting in parts that are as strong as they are gorgeous. Riders who add carbon fiber parts to their own V-Twin will be using the same technology seen on every bike in the HarleyDavidson Bagger World Cup. Saddlemen is supplying both the spec seats and bodywork for the new international series.

And, by using injection-molded ABS, every piece is perfectly formed for an OEM-quality finish and a flawless fit on the bike. Perhaps the most dramatic change to the Softail is the seat. Saddlemen designed the Step-Up seat with performance in mind. The sharp vertical step-up design

For Saddlemen, though, it’s not enough to simply look like a fast bike. The motor was built to a race-spec 131 cubic inches, cranking out 185hp. If you get a whiff of the fuel, you’ll know it’s not ordinary gas from the pump. The Softail runs on T4 race fuel. To complete the Softail, the team turned to its trusted partners. The performance features are capped off by Öhlins suspension, Brembo racing-grade brake calipers and a handlebar/riser combo from THRASHIN Supply Co. The Softail build was more than an excuse to use up some spare parts. It’s also designed to show dealers and riders alike how easy it is to transform a stock bike with some key Saddlemen products. “This Street Bob is part of a small fleet of motorcycles that Saddlemen sometimes lends out to dealerships to provide on-floor inspiration for customers, right there next to the parts counter,” notes Saddlemen’s Tom Monroe. “Other Saddlemen displays like the Performance Carbon Fiber dealer display or Seat Center can perform a similar function all year long, offering a chance to see and feel Saddlemen quality.” Additionally, Saddlemen’s sales team brings custom motorcycles like this to rallies and dealer events around the U.S. as part of their very full annual calendar of events, from Laconia to Sturgis to Born Free. ■

50 Years of Control ÖHLINS PUTS SUSPENSION WITHIN REACH FOR DRAG DEALERS

F

ifty years is worth celebrating. For Öhlins, though, its 50th anniversary is also a chance to look at how an idea born from racing in 1976 continues to reach riders today.

The Drag Specialties supplier got its start when Kenth Öhlin saw a need in motocross. Engine performance had advanced faster than suspension capability, creating a need for better control. Solving that real-world performance problem became the foundation for Öhlins and established a pattern the company still follows: Racing uncovers problems, engineers work to solve them and that knowledge ultimately makes its way into products for riders. Half a century later, the Öhlins name has spread far beyond motocross. That includes the V-Twin market, where Harley-Davidson is now one of the company’s strongest U.S. growth areas. The anniversary celebration itself is reaching across the Atlantic. Members of the Öhlins USA team and key partners will take part in the company’s global celebration in Sweden. Back home, the milestone will be tied into dealer, distributor, racing and customer activities throughout the year. For Öhlins USA CEO Scott MacDonald, that makes the anniversary more than a look back. It is also a recommitment to the U.S. market.

40

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

“For us, this is not just a corporate milestone; it is an opportunity to show how the Öhlins story lives in the U.S. market through technical support, racing involvement, dealer education, and premium aftermarket growth,” MacDonald says. It is also an opportunity for the Öhlins USA team to reconnect with the thinking that launched the company. Öhlins began by solving performance problems, and MacDonald wants that mindset to resonate throughout the company, from engineering and product management to sales, service, operations and customer support. For Drag Specialties dealers, one place that history meets the present is the growing performance focus within the Harley-Davidson market. Öhlins sees opportunity across Touring bikes, Performance Baggers, club-style builds and performance cruisers as more riders look to suspension to change how their motorcycles feel and respond. The opportunity goes beyond customers chasing outright performance, too. “The biggest opportunity is to broaden the conversation from performance to ride quality, comfort, safety, and confidence,” MacDonald says. “Many customers do not walk into a dealership asking for a premium suspension upgrade, but they do

★ O c t o b e r 2 0 2 6 • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Those concerns give dealers an opening. Suspension becomes relevant not only to the performance-minded rider but also to Touring customers, commuters and riders carrying passengers or loaded bags. Dealers can start by asking how a customer actually rides. Does the rider travel solo or two-up? Carry luggage? Spend most of the time around town or on long trips? Is the problem harshness, bottoming, brake dive, cornering feel or comfort? Is the goal simple improvement or more adjustability? The answers can help shift the discussion away from price and toward matching the suspension to the rider and the motorcycle. “Öhlins is a premium brand, but premium cannot mean complicated for the dealer,” MacDonald says. “Our job is to help dealers turn technical suspension benefits into practical customer value: better control, better comfort, more confidence, improved traction, and a motorcycle that feels more connected to the rider.”

Öhlins National Sales Manager Roberto Santiago connects with two dealers at NVP. Face time with dealers supports the company’s growing V-Twin presence and helps bring its suspension knowledge to Drag Specialties dealers and their customers.

That customer value is backed by the engineering that has developed throughout Öhlins’ five decades. The company’s technologies include TTX twin-tube damping, STX monotube shocks and NIX cartridge systems, all built around managing damping, consistency, serviceability and adjustability.

talk about problems suspension can solve. They say the bike feels harsh, bottoms out, dives under braking, wallows in corners, feels unstable with a passenger, or does not feel as planted as they expected.”

Racing remains a major part of that development process. Today, disciplines including Bagger Racing League, King of the Baggers, MotoAmerica and American Flat Track are among those providing the demanding environments that feed the company’s engineering culture. “That does not mean every customer needs a race shock,” MacDonald says. “It means the same engineering culture that solves racing problems also improves road-going products. Better damping control, more consistent performance, reduced fade, improved traction, and useful adjustability all come from that racing foundation.” Getting those technical benefits across to customers is where MacDonald sees the relationship between Öhlins USA, LeMans Corporation and the Drag Specialties sales force playing an important role. Drag reps already work directly with dealers, giving Öhlins another way to provide product education and help shops identify suspension opportunities. “For a technical product, that field connection is critical,” MacDonald says. “Suspension is not always an impulse sale. It often requires education, confidence, and the ability to explain why the upgrade matters.” As the anniversary year continues, MacDonald says Öhlins USA plans to build on that dealer connection with stronger training, clearer product positioning and better tools for

matching suspension to riders. Setup, serviceability and technical guidance after the sale remain part of that equation as well. That makes 50 years both a milestone and a starting point. The racing-driven approach that began in 1976 still shapes Öhlins, while MacDonald and the Öhlins USA team are using the anniversary to strengthen the relationships that bring that technology to riders. For Drag dealers, that puts a half-century of suspension experience behind a simple conversation at the parts counter: How does your customer want the motorcycle to ride? Performance Data Meets the Riding Experience FPX goes beyond fuel tuning devices like FP4 and its Fuelpak predecessors. With FPX Trak & Tune, the Vance & Hines team tapped into decades of experience to expand traditional aftermarket tuning capabilities beyond performance. Horsepower and torque curves remain important, but they’re only part of the riding experience. “FPX Trak & Tune opens the door to a new world of features for riders,” says Robert Martinez, Sales Manager. “Now, customers can analyze, improve and enjoy their ride at a new level with live data logging capabilities, crash detection, theft deterrent and even an achievements and challenges experience.” Several layers of functionality put the “Trak” in Trak & Tune. First is the ability to run navigation directly in the FPX app. With a few taps on a phone, riders can search routes, track trips and get turn-by-turn directions in the app while it tracks data from the motorcycle.

Vance & Hines’ FPX Trak & Tune logs speed, rpm, temperatures, pressures and other selectable data, helping riders better understand their motorcycle’s performance while they’re out riding.

R

iding isn’t just about twisting the throttle and burning fuel. It’s about the experience, community and connection. Rooted in drag racing and focused on evolving two-wheel performance, Vance & Hines continues to expand what it offers riders. Case in point: *(EMIS Code 2)FPX Trak & Tune.

Riders don’t need to be racing on a professional circuit to benefit from data logging. Tracking key figures can provide information they can use to analyze the bike, their riding or both. Pairing navigation information with the motorcycle’s logged data provides additional context about where and under what conditions that data was recorded.

FPX Trak & Tune’s Quick Ride function simplifies that data acquisition. Riders select Quick Ride, head out and let the FPX system collect data, including speed, rpm, temperatures, pressures and other selectable parameters.

*Products with EMIS Code 1 are emission compliant in all states, including California. Products with EMIS Code 2 are emission compliant in all states except California. Products with EMIS Code 3 are “Competition Use” only, and not legal in any state for street use on any pollution-controlled vehicles. Products with EMIS Code 4 have no U.S. territory restrictions. “If the FPX app detects forces that are synonymous with an accident, it will automatically deploy a notification that has a time-limited response feature and will ring your emergency contact person unless the rider manually cancels the notification. A safer ride is always a better ride,” says Martinez. The system also offers theft deterrence. Vance & Hines engineers integrated a feature that deactivates the fuel pump when theft deterrence is engaged through the FPX app. Even if a thief has the motorcycle’s keys, the bike cannot be started until the rider unlocks the system from a phone. Riding is as much about enjoying time on the road with friends as it is about the bike, and that can come with some friendly competition. The FPX app builds on that community element with digital badges and achievements riders can share with friends. From checking off destination visits to logging miles, the feature gives customers another way to engage with their rides through the app. Vance & Hines’ FPX Trak & Tune combines turn-by-turn navigation with motorcycle data logging, giving riders added context about where and under what conditions performance data was collected.

For customers who have invested in additional engine modifications, that information can help them better understand how the motorcycle is performing. Simultaneous performance and geographic data logging can also extend beyond an individual rider or bike. Whether it’s a Saturday breakfast run or a weeklong trip to Sturgis, customers often ride with friends. FPX Trak & Tune lets riders create groups within the app to share and compare data, adding another element to the ride and to the afternoon’s bench racing. FPX’s tracking functionality isn’t limited to performance. FPX Trak & Tune also features crash detection, adding a safety

With so many functions tied to each ride, FPX can also help customers keep tabs on their motorcycles as the miles add up. Riders can customize and track maintenance intervals, gas stops, rest points and more to help keep important milestones on their radar. For dealers, those maintenance notifications can also help keep parts and service needs visible to customers. FPX Trak & Tune expands the role of the traditional performance tuner by bringing motorcycle data, navigation, safety, security, maintenance and community features together in one system. ■

Rolling at Sturgis

Tire Sales and Crowds Were Up One of the best compliments a brand can get is repeat customers, and some riders were back for their second or third set of Cruisetec tires. Being able to get fresh rubber installed on-site at Sturgis was a big advantage for those who had ridden hundreds of miles to the rally and were ready for a new set to get them home again with confidence.

Riding on Metzeler Cruisetec tires, Manic Cycles’ “Disco” added another Sturgis trophy to the collection with Best Dyna honors at the FXR Show & Dyna Mixer.

Metzeler Cruisetec tires helped complete the performance-focused look of “Dough Boy,” Patrick Santosuosso’s custom HarleyDavidson that picked up multiple awards during the Sturgis rally.

E

ven before this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally got started, Patrick Santosuosso of Manic Cycles was earning accolades for his “Dough Boy” custom shod with Metzeler Cruisetec tires. The bike took top honors at the Pre-Sturgis party hosted by Klock Werks in Mitchell, South Dakota. It was just the start of an outstanding Sturgis experience for Metzeler. That same custom Harley-Davidson went on to win Best of Show at the V-Twin Visionary Performance Bike Show and Best in Show at the Proper Baggers Performance Show. Santosuosso’s Dyna, named “Disco,” rolled into the FXR Show & Dyna Mixer on a set of Metzeler Cruisetec Tires, where it won Best Dyna. While the awards are something for the Metzeler team to brag about, the real value of Sturgis wasn’t collecting trophies. Rather, it was the chance to talk face-to-face with riders about their V-Twins and, of course, their tires. The Metzeler team was set up at J&P Cycles in Deadwood, selling and installing tires on site. Right from the start, it was clear that things were even busier than last year, with techs working from sunup to sundown to accommodate everyone who wanted to ride home on a new set of Metzeler Cruisetec tires. All of that interaction with riders was a chance to talk to both first-time Metzeler customers as well as die-hard enthusiasts of the brand. The consistent feedback was that Cruisetec tires provide classic V-Twin looks with the modern characteristics necessary for the performance V-Twin segment. Riders praised Cruisetec tires for their grip, feel and confidence in the corners.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

“When riders come back for their second or third set of Cruisetec tires, that tells us more than any test could,” said Jordan Jones, Sales Manager, Metzeler. “Sturgis puts us face-to-face with some of the most passionate V-Twin riders in the country, and those conversations show us what really matters to them. That’s why we show up; to listen to riders, and to make sure our dealers have what those riders are asking for.” Overall, the vibe at Sturgis was overwhelmingly positive. Attendance was high, and the bikes rolling through the Black Hills were an impressive mix of one-off customs, vintage rides and brand-new Harleys. fit kits, creating true bolt-on installation experience for builders. To protect against rust and corrosion, every fender also receives an electrostatic surface coating while providing a solid foundation for paint. That level of fit and function detail carries across the Klock Werks fender lineup, including its Benchmark and Tire Hugger Series front fenders.

Klock Werks rear fenders feature durable steel construction and clean lines, with many applications offering a Frenched design that provides a streamlined home for the license plate.

F

enders do more than cover a wheel. They play a big role in defining a motorcycle’s silhouette, stance and overall style. With roots in the garage-built custom scene, Klock Werks takes a purposedriven approach to fender design. Its steel fenders combine fit, function, style and long-term durability.

The Benchmark Series takes a different approach, featuring signature smooth sides, an extended rear tail and a lower profile than many stock fenders for a more slammed appearance. Fitments are available across a broad range of Touring and Softail models, giving builders a clean foundation for custom builds.

For builders, quality is something you can feel and see. Klock Werks’ fenders are cold-stamped from 14-gauge steel and made in the USA. They deliver strength and torsional rigidity that allows the front fender to function as a fork brace, helping create a more planted front end that gives riders confidence when carving sweeping corners. “The advantage of our fenders is that they use a cold-stamped steel forming process. That means they don’t just hold their shape, they’ve got added strength and rigidity compared to heat-formed ones,” says Josh Lutter, Klock Werks Engineer. “Plus, they’re precision-fit for a clean, sharp look, so builders won’t need to mess with unnecessary fabrication or alterations during installation,”

Klock Werks Tire Hugger fenders closely follow the tire to create a lower, streamlined stance, with several styles giving builders options for dialing in a bike’s look.

Klock Werks fenders are manufactured using a deep-draw stamping process to create a smooth, consistent surface, while five-axis laser cutting maintains precise dimensions and mounting points. Most Klock Werks fenders are offered as application-specific

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

For riders looking to move away from a full-coverage fender, the Tire Hugger Series is designed to closely follow the tire and accentuate the wheel. Tire Hugger fenders create a lower, more streamlined stance without sacrificing strength and precision. Available in a wide range of applications, the lineup includes styles such as the Henry, La Ventana and Performance Bagger, giving builders plenty of options to dial in the look of their bike.

Klock Werks rear fenders are engineered to the same standard as the company’s front fenders. Clean lines and durable construction give builders a solid foundation for everything from straightforward replacements to fully customized builds. Many applications feature a Frenched design and are ready to accept Klock Werks license plate frames or other custom touches.

From Harley-Davidson Baggers and Sportsters to Indian Challengers and Roadmasters, Klock Werks fenders are available for a wide range of applications. ■

hink of the Chicane™ Mini Floorboards less as a floorboard and more as a footrest — a purposebuilt peg upgrade rather than a full driver floorboard. The Mini Floorboards are the newest addition to the Chicane lineup for Harley-Davidson models. Designed primarily as an upgrade for the passenger’s foot position, the Mini Floorboards give riders a wider, more comfortable platform than the stock passenger pegs found on most models. The same mount also works on the driver side for highway peg applications, though passenger use is where dealers will most often see the mini floorboards go to work. Like the rest of the Chicane collection, the mini floorboards carry the line’s aggressive, angular styling. They’re forged from aluminum and topped with EPDM rubber inserts that grip and dampen vibration without wearing, cracking or hardening over time. This is a real upgrade over the stamped-steel pegs many of these customers are looking to replace. A raised side lip helps keep the foot in place, and three mounting points give riders 2 inches of total front-toback adjustment along with an adjustable pitch, so fit can

be tuned to each rider’s preference. Installation is simple: The mini floorboards use a half-inch D-shaped male mount compatible with most Harley mounts. Each kit includes left and right floorboards, a pair of male adapters and all mounting hardware, and no drilling is required, so a set can go on in about five minutes per side, Ciro says. The Chicane line of comfort accessories gives customers an easy way to build a cohesive, matched look across their bike. With multiple pieces sharing the same design language, dealers can help customers create a coordinated setup without relying on mismatched accessories. The mini floorboards show how the Chicane line has expanded from its original footpeg and floorboard design into a family of matched accessories. The lineup includes driver floorboards, footpegs, footrests, passenger floorboard inserts, convex mirrors, grips, a shift peg, shift linkage and a brake lever pad. Available in chrome or black, the mini floorboards give dealers another option for customers who want to carry the Chicane look across their bike. ■

Inherited Passion

Tires to Keep a Family Legacy Rolling

One of Nikki Martin’s customs took its place among the featured machines at the Motorcycles as Art exhibit during the 2026 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Photos by Atijana Martin

“You want to be taken seriously as a female and not just be a pretty face. I’m very super girly and don’t fit the typical biker mold.” Nikki Martin continues the family’s custom V-Twin tradition with builds that reflect her own style and a longstanding connection with Avon tires.

P

Nikki’s builds don’t fit the typical mold, either, and they continue to garner accolades at bike shows. Most recently, Nikki’s Kraft Tech Softail Chopper, Lucky 13, turned heads at Sturgis.

lenty of riders inherited their passion for motorcycles from the previous generations. For Nikki Martin, fueling that passion in her kids is about more than creating a family legacy of V-Twin builders. It’s also about keeping the industry alive and forging new paths. And, wherever the Martin family rides, they’re getting there on Avon tires.

The chopper has Avon Cobra Chrome tires mounted to a 21-inch, 40-spoke front wheel and a 16-inch solid rear wheel. The Cobra Chrome tire is available in hard-to-find sizes that builders love, so the Roy’s Toys family uses them often. In fact, the relationship between the shop and Avon began over a discussion about a build with a 330 Avon Cobra Chrome rear.

Nikki inherited her love of customs from her dad, Roy’s Toys founder Roy Martin. Following in her father’s footsteps was natural.

It’s not just the sizes that make the Cobra Chrome tire a smart choice, though. Nikki says other factors include, “The appearance, the handling, the price point.” In other words, the Cobra Chrome tire checks all the right boxes.

“I think it was that I wanted to spend time with my dad at a very early age,” Nikki recalls. “Dad started with hot rods back in the day, so there’s photos of me as a baby there with him tinkering in the garage. As he transitioned to bikes, I transitioned with him. I like doing something with my hands, and it’s something unexpected for a girl to be doing.”

Lucky 13 now heads to SEMA for Battle of the Builders, and Nikki is working on a custom Sportster that will debut there. It, too, will roll into the show on Avon Cobra Chrome tires.

That latter point is something Nikki celebrates. As a pioneer for women in the custom V-Twin scene, she gets a kick out of the surprised look people get when she points at a bike and says, “I built that.”

Just as Nikki learned her love of custom V-Twins from a parent, she has passed it on to her kids. Her son, 19-yearold Adrian, will compete in the Young Gun Division of Battle of the Builders with a 30-inch Bagger. And, of course, it also rolls on Cobra Chromes. ■

“As a female I think it’s really important that we grow the industry and get more young riders out there,” Nikki says.

Boosting Visibility for 2026 Models Available in white or selective yellow, Custom Dynamics’ Shark Demon LED Fog Lights pair added lighting with industrial styling for 2026 Touring models. Custom Dynamics’ saddlebag lights and All-In-One Auxiliary LED License Plate Frame add run, brake and turn lighting for increased rear and side visibility.

O

ne small change to a bike model can mean a lot of work, and part numbers, for an aftermarket manufacturer. When the 2026 Harley-Davidson Street Glide and Road Glide models debuted, a redesigned main connector underneath the seat required new part numbers for some of the top-selling products from Custom Dynamics. Now, those popular products for the 2023-25 models are available for 2026 models. “As soon as new models start rolling out, we’re already looking at what’s changed and figuring out how to build products that fit and perform the way riders expect. The 2026 lineup is a perfect example of that commitment,” says Custom Dynamics Chief Sales Officer Rob Bluma. “We work hard to stay on top of every update so our customers can spend less time searching for their next upgrade and have more time riding.” And there are plenty of those upgrades available for the 2026 Street Glide and Road Glide models, all delivered with easy plug-and-play functionality.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

Custom Dynamics’ Magic Strobes Brake Light Flasher plugs into the wiring harness under the seat and offers 10 rider-selectable flash or strobe patterns.

While the Shark Demon headlight kit didn’t require a new part number, the Shark Demon High-Performance LED Fog Lights did. Available in white or selective yellow options, the fog lights complement the Shark Demon headlights, featuring fins and exposed screws. The industrial styling is topped with a gloss black finish. When it comes to lighting up the saddlebags, the Low-Profile LED Saddlebag Lights come in several configurations, including a red or smoked lens, as well as a red LED or a red and amber combination. Either choice gives extra visibility for run, brake and turn functions. On top of that, a rider can choose from three selectable lighting patterns. Because the low-profile saddlebag lights are just a single row of LEDs, they look clean and streamlined on the bike for a gorgeous custom touch in addition to providing additional lighting. Similarly, the LED Saddlebag Latch Light has LED and lens options, and it seamlessly replaces the factory reflector in the saddlebag hinge faceplate. It’s a small but significant upgrade for improved visibility from the side and rear. Riders who want to amp up the lighting on the rear of the bike even more can go for the All-In-One Auxiliary LED License Plate Frame. Available in a gloss black or chrome housing, the 6 white LEDs show off the license plate while the dual-intensity red LEDs act as run and brake lights. There are amber LEDs on each side that function as turn signals. The popular Magic Strobes Brake Light Flasher is now available for the 2026 models, too. This module plugs into the wiring harness underneath the seat, and it allows the rider to choose one of 10 flash or strobe patterns. A dial control makes it easy to switch between the options. ■

etter cooling, more functionality, advanced electronics – all selling points of 2024+ HarleyDavidson Touring bikes. But, with more systems comes more parts and more potential failure points. The last thing customers want is to be stranded on the side of a remote highway, which is why THRASHIN Supply eliminates another risk point with its Touring Skid Plate, now available in a vented steel option. A quick glance under the front of a 2024+ Road Glide or Street Glide and you’ll find the water pump, coolant lines and wiring exposed to the elements and road debris. Between clocking daily miles themselves and direct customer outreach sharing their water pump casualty story, the THRASHIN crew developed its line of skid plates providing complete protection with simple installation. “We had a customer email us their story of their water pump being damaged hundreds of miles away from home, leaving them stranded and ruining their trip,” says Juan Arceo, Lead Mechanical Engineer. “We quickly developed our aluminum skid plate to protect all those vital components and keep customers on the road. Shortly after, we took it a step further with our carbon fiber skid plates and now we’ve added to the line with our vented steel option.” THRASHIN’s new steel-constructed Skid Plate is an option for customers looking to stay protected at an entry-level

This new option also features an air scoop to promote efficient airflow and cooling. THRASHIN’s steel Touring Skid Plates are a stamped, single piece design. Each mounting point is directly integrated, allowing customers and DIY dealers to quickly and easily install with factory mounting hardware. With a well-rounded selection of materials for THRASHIN Touring Skid Plates, your Touring bike customers can get the protection they need with the looks, characteristics and price point that best fits their build. This new steel option is the heaviest duty and easiest on the wallet, but weighs the most of the three. Carbon fiber is the lightest and always looks custom, but it’s not as stout as steel and it comes at a premium price point. The aluminum option walks the line between the two. Whichever option they choose, a THRASHIN Touring Skid Plate should be one of the first modifications customers make to keep their ride protected from easily avoidable mishaps that could leave them stranded on the highway. ■

Designed for 2018–2026 Harley-Davidson M8 Softail models, it delivers greater high-speed stability, a more planted feel through corners and the confidence that comes from riding a well-built motorcycle. As your customers continue upgrading their motorcycles, the chassis becomes an increasingly important part of the overall package. “I’M LIVING

MY DREAM”

GOOD TIMES MOTORCYCLE SALES & SERVICE HAYS, KANSAS

B

Kael Bloom photos

J Rupp’s path to becoming an independent dealer and service specialist for Harley-Davidson motorcycles was a long one. But motorcycles were always part of the plan. Rupp, owner of Good Times Motorcycle Sales & Service, a Drag Specialties dealer in Hays, Kansas, developed a love of motorcycles as a kid, then worked to build a career around that early passion. “I was a little boy with uncles who rode motorcycles - from Harley-Davidsons to dirt bikes to Yamaha cruisers,” he tells Drag Specialties Magazine. “My uncle Fred had the long hair, the black T-shirt, the Levi’s jeans, the engineer boots, the tattoos and the Harley. That, to me, was so cool. I still remember being at my grandma’s, and when he would pull in, I would run over to him and he’d pick me up and set me right in front of him with my left foot on his horn cover and my right foot on his air cleaner cover and I’d hold on while he’d ride around a couple of blocks. That grabbed me. That was cool. After that, I always had my sights set on getting a Harley-Davidson.” But as he got older, his focus shifted to sports. In high school, Rupp was a standout baseball player being courted by colleges and even professional teams. His future looked as if it would be spent on the diamond until a severe shoulder injury late in his high school career cut that dream short. While he went on to play ball at the local community college, he felt disheartened, eventually left school and returned home. On his way, he passed a group of motorcyclists on Interstate 70. The encounter helped put his next chapter into focus.

ENTERING THE INDUSTRY All about family. The Rupp crew at Good Times Motorcycle Sales & Service, from left: Madisyn, Dena, BJ and Kinley.

“Looking back, that’s when I set my sights on doing this the rest of my life,” Rupp says. “After … getting that motorcycle and realizing I wanted to be a part of this industry, every chance I could get, I’d come into the dealership, grab an application, bring it home to fill out and bring it back. I wanted to work for them so bad.” In the summer of 2003, Doerfler Harley-Davidson moved out of its original location and into a large new building alongside I-70. Knowing that they were expanding and would need additional help, Rupp kept submitting applications, but never received a reply.

Beyond motorcycles and service, Good Times gives customers a place to shop for merchandise, parts and accessories at its 6,100-square-foot Hays location.

After arriving home on a Friday, Rupp told his father he planned to visit Doerfler Harley-Davidson the next day to buy a motorcycle. That dealership in Hays was opened in 1975 by brothers Alex and Donnie Doerfler, then was purchased in 1990 by Alex’s son Brian and his wife, Deanna. With help from his father and financing through HarleyDavidson Financial Services, Rupp rode away from there that Saturday on a 1200 Sportster. He was hooked.

“At the same time, I’m working in the oil fields, making more money than I could spend and thinking about going to MMI as a way of getting my foot in the door as a tech,” he says. “Well, in late 2005, I got hurt out in the field. And as I’m leaving rehab, I get a phone call from the Doerflers offering me a position as a Chrome Consultant – a salesman in the parts department selling accessories.” Rupp’s passion for the business helped him advance through the dealership. He became head of the parts department, moved into sales and finance in 2016 and became sales manager in 2018. Eventually, he served as Brian Doerfler’s right-hand man. By 2019, the Doerflers were considering retirement and offered Rupp the opportunity to buy the dealership. Rupp didn’t have the capital to purchase a franchised Harley dealership, and he wasn’t interested in continuing a relationship with the manufacturer.

“I wasn’t into the direction Harley-Davidson was going, what they were doing, and what was going on with Harley dealerships,” he says. “So, I decided to go independent with the business and sell pre-owned Harleys.” Rupp wanted to operate the business much like the Doerflers had, with him taking on Brian’s role and his wife, Dena, stepping into the role Deanna Doerfler had filled for years. At the time, Dena was working as a surgery tech. “I wanted to scale the business down to the grassroots mom-and-pop shop it had been prior to moving into that big new facility they purchased in 2003,” he says. The Doerflers officially closed Doerfler Harley-Davidson on June 30, 2020, and Rupp opened Good Times Motorcycle Sales & Service the next day. Rupp operated from the larger facility for a year while remodeling the dealership’s original location. He then liquidated the larger facility and moved Good Times into the refurbished building. Today, Rupp has a clear description of what customers can expect. “We’re known for our customer service, our grassroots mom-and-pop, family-owned and operated dealership that specializes in quality pre-owned Harley-Davidsons, full service, diagnostics, customization and accessories,” Rupp explains.

The open floor plan includes exposed wood rafters, a sanded and cleared floor and paintings and photographs throughout the shop. “Imagine walking through a motorcycle shop/art gallery,” Rupp says. “People will stop here and say, ‘Dude, this place belongs in New York City’.” Customers entering the front door step directly onto the sales floor among the motorcycles. The parts and service counters border the sales area, a loft provides parts storage and a 4,000-square-foot service area occupies the back of the building. The shop has six lifts, along with tools and equipment Rupp purchased from the Doerflers. It’s a family operation, too. In addition to Rupp, Good Times has six employees: his wife, Dena, daughters Kinley and Madisyn, and three technicians. Dena handles bookkeeping, Kinley works on everything from service scheduling to detailing and paint repair and Madisyn works with customers and staffs the counters. Good Times generally keeps about 30 motorcycles on its sales floor, sourcing units through local trade-ins and National Powersports Auctions.

“We do rides,” he says. “And I don’t mean we ride 30 miles to a bar and then go home. We’ll do 250 miles in one direction and 250 miles back home, and sometimes even do 1,000mile rides. And it’s not just 10 or 12 bikes; we usually have a pack of 50 or more motorcycles.”

DRAG AS A PARTNER Parts and accessories are another key piece of the Good Times business, and Rupp sees Drag Specialties and its vendors as important partners in serving his customers. Dena and BJ Rupp run Good Times as a family operation, building the grassroots, mom-and-pop motorcycle shop BJ envisioned when he became an independent dealer.

“I can buy anything, even brand-new 2026 models,” Rupp says. “I just had a guy come in a month ago and ask for a 2026 Blood Orange Low Rider ST. I told him to give me 30 days, and I ended up finding him a repossessed 2026 with nine miles on it.” Touring motorcycles, including Road Glide models like the Road Glide Special and Road Glide Ultra, are strong sellers for the dealership. Rupp says Good Times also sells plenty of Trikes and keeps Low Rider ST models in stock. “Ever since the Low Rider ST came out, I feel it has become the best performing platform Harley is producing right now,” Rupp says. The business is split roughly evenly between motorcycle sales and service, giving customers reasons to return after the sale.

CUSTOMERS AND COMMUNITY Hays has a population of about 26,000, but Good Times draws from a much larger area. There’s more to riding in Kansas than what travelers see from I-70. “The topography of Kansas is very diverse — we have high-rolling prairie hills, river valleys, and a lot of fun roads,” Rupp says. That puts Good Times at the center of a much larger riding community than Hays’ population might suggest. “My territory would be all of western Kansas, a big portion of western Nebraska, the Panhandle of Oklahoma, the Panhandle of Texas, and eastern Colorado,” he says. “It’s a very large population dispersed between rural communities.” For a dealership serving customers across such a broad area, building relationships matters. Good Times holds a 4.9 Google rating with more than 250 reviews, something Rupp credits to the way the dealership treats its customers. “My loyalty [is] to the customer,” Rupp says. “I can’t keep everybody happy, but for the most part we go above and beyond for our customers.”

“They are everything to us,” Rupp says. “The companies that Drag Specialties has for us to use are our lifeblood – the products that they offer allow us to do business. I’m big about my customers getting taken care of, and I really align myself with the companies that get that too.” That relationship extends to Good Times’ Drag Specialties sales rep, Gary Gibbs. For Rupp, having a rep regularly walk through the dealership door makes a difference. “Gary is the best of all the Drag reps I have had over the years,” Rupp says. “When I was at Doerfler’s I had a phenomenal rep, but I had never met him. He always did business over the phone. So, what really speaks to me is to actually have Gary walk through the door every couple of weeks. That says everything to me. “Gibbs is awesome, and we are so grateful to have him as our rep.” The respect goes both ways. Gibbs sees in Good Times the kind of dealership where product knowledge is matched by a personal approach to customers. “The Rupps run a really unique store in central Kansas with a real knowledgeable staff up to date on the newer bikes and products as well as anything old school,” says Gibbs. “Ever since meeting them for the first time, I realized BJ and Dena were a couple of the nicest people you will ever meet. There’s always a ‘Hello, how are you,’ or as I have witnessed, customers coming in greeted with a handshake or hug. Stopping in really makes you feel welcome.” For Rupp, the independent dealership represents the result of a path that began with childhood rides around the block, continued with repeated job applications and eventually led him to owning the kind of motorcycle shop he had envisioned. And he hasn’t forgotten the people who helped him get there. “With the help of everyone involved – family, employees, customers and suppliers – I’m living my dream,” he says. ■

HELMETS

Scaling Up

A Subtle Helmet Worth a Closer Look

The Threshold Nocturnal 2 might look understated from a distance, but up close its dragonscale pattern reveals a raised, tactile finish across the handcrafted composite fiberglass shell.

T

With the Threshold Nocturnal 2, ICON adds everyday function to a performance-styled helmet. The chin bar flips up with a button that’s easy to operate while wearing gloves.

he difference between V-Twin riders and other segments of the industry isn’t just about the kinds of motorcycles being ridden. There’s a significant difference in style, too, when it comes to gear. V-Twin riders tend to gravitate toward more understated looks, and ICON delivers that with the Threshold Nocturnal 2 helmet. The closer you get to the helmet, though, the more it’s apparent that not everything is what it seems.

look that goes hand-in-hand with Performance Baggers and speed-minded riding styles.

“For a lot of V-twin riders, the bike is an extension of their personality, so they tend to gravitate toward gear that reveals itself over time instead of demanding attention from across a parking lot,” says ICON Senior Designer John Whitaker.

Just the touch of a button allows the chin bar to lift, and it can easily be done with gloves on. The Fog-Free Threshold Shield gives riders a wide view of the road ahead, and the internal Dropshield can be lowered when the sun gets to be a little too bright.

That was a lesson the team at ICON learned with the debut of the Airflite Nocturnal helmet. The helmet appeared to be like any other plain-black helmet at a glance, but up close, it revealed a dragon-scale pattern.

Dragons might breathe fire, but that doesn’t mean a rider wants to feel the heat. Oversized intake vents and exhaust ports keep air flowing through the EPS liner to keep things comfortable inside the helmet.

The Threshold Nocturnal 2 takes that original concept and elevates it – both figuratively and literally. “With Threshold Nocturnal 2, we wanted to evolve that idea,” says Whitaker. “The pattern takes on a more aggressive, almost dragon-like character, with a raised tactile finish that lets you actually feel the scales as your hand moves across the shell.”

Additional features of the Threshold helmet include an emergency release system and instant compatibility with the ICON Helmlink Bluetooth communication system.

The subtle dragon-scale pattern has a 3D lift baked into it, which is what creates the textured finish on the handcrafted composite fiberglass shell. Underneath that textured pattern is the Threshold helmet platform, which provides the convenience of a modular helmet coupled with the more aggressive performance

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

“Combined with Threshold’s performance modular platform, the Nocturnal 2 creates something that feels equally at home on a Performance Bagger, a club-style Cruiser, or any V-twin built to be ridden hard,” Whitaker explains. “It’s less about following a trend and more about creating a helmet with the same depth of character as the motorcycles and riders it’s designed for.” ■

very year, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is an “all hands on deck” event for the team at Legend Suspensions. Everyone in the company of about 30 employees has a role for the annual event, whether that’s installing suspensions, selling or engaging with the riding community. Like the rally, Legend Suspensions is at home in Sturgis. Every product produced by them is developed and built at Legend’s Sturgis headquarters. “The Legend team takes tremendous pride in crafting products that enhance every rider’s experience,” says General Manager Sheryl Eisenbraun. “Our success has always been about more than the products we build. It’s also about the relationships we’ve developed with our dealer network across the country, the dedicated Drag Specialties sales representatives who support them, and our partnership with Drag Specialties.” Legend Suspensions is celebrating more than 25 years as a Drag Specialties exclusive supplier. The story began with Legend founder Jesse Jurrens, who started Legend in a basement and built it into an award-winning company. “The relationship with Legend Suspensions started with Jesse Jurrens’s Lowlife frame and award-winning Softail air shock,” recalls Drag Specialties National Sales Manager Greg Matter. “In that time, Jesse landed in the Sturgis Hall of Fame, and the Legend product line has expanded to include a broad range of premium coil shocks, front end cartridge kits, and air shocks.” Today, Eisenbraun leads the company with a focus on quality American-made parts and production. Legend refuses to compromise when it comes to materials or manufacturing processes, and the company is best defined by the words pride and quality. That’s something Legend customers know firsthand.

From AXEO front cartridge kits to REVO A and ARC rear shocks, Legend Suspensions gives riders options for dialing in suspension performance, adjustability and comfort.

The AXEO Front Cartridge, now available in an external adjustability version, is a front suspension upgrade for riders who want maximum adjustability and control. It is especially popular with riders who have a more aggressive riding style and need confidence in the front end. There are plenty of rear shock options from Legend, including the Revo A and ARC Remote Reservoir Shock. Each product provides a blend of adjustability, performance and all-day comfort that defines Legend Suspension’s components. Riders who want to dial in the ride height and performance know Legend’s air suspension products will get the job done, while Trikes get an upgrade in handling, stability and ride quality with dedicated suspension products. Eisenbraun and the Legend team know the importance of keeping the powersports industry going, and they have been able to do that through the Drag Specialties Growth Academy. In addition to educating LeMans and dealership staff about Legend products, the outreach also helps younger industry professionals learn the ins and outs of helping riders customize their motorcycles. Legend also gives back through a variety of community and charitable partnerships, including supporting veterans and veteran motorcycle organizations. Ultimately, it’s about so much more than suspension products for the team at Legend. ■

A Lifetime of Trust

V-Twin Oils with a Long History “With the Drag Specialties name on a bottle of oil, you’re putting nearly 60 years of hardearned trust into your engine,” says Drag Specialties National Sales Manager Greg Matter. “Since 1968, we’ve served the V-Twin community by delivering products riders and dealers can depend on. We know what these machines demand, and this oil is specifically formulated to ensure your engine is taken care of the way we take care of our own.” Harley enthusiasts who want an exceptional level of performance and protection will appreciate the benefits of DS3 Premium Full Synthetic 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil. Suitable for all three cavities of a Harley V-Twin engine, including the engine, transmission and primary cases, this oil features an additive package that combines with the synthetic oil to provide high levels of viscosity and stability. There are also additives to protect against the extreme pressures found inside Harley engines. Drag Specialties V-Twin High-Performance Mineral Engine Oil also has additives that promote excellent wear protection and durability while keeping sludge buildup at bay. A bonus of this 20W-50 mineral oil is that it excels at protecting the engine during cold starts.

From DS3 Premium Full Synthetic to V-Twin High-Performance Mineral 20W-50, Drag Specialties gives Harley-Davidson riders oil options formulated to provide engine protection, durability and smooth operation on the road.

D

ealers know that for their riders, a Harley-Davidson is a lot more than a form of transportation. It’s a lifestyle and a statement of personal taste, which means riders care a lot about the oil that keeps their Harleys running. Drag Specialties lubricants formulated specifically for Harley V-Twin motorcycles feature high-quality base oils and premium additives to protect engines and keep bikes performing at their best. Drag Specialties offers mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic oils for V-Twin applications to suit both a bike’s needs and a rider’s preferences. All of the choices are designed to protect V-Twin engines against high heat and rpms, reducing wear and oil breakdown while keeping things running smooth and clean. Plus, because the oils are optimized for motorcycles, that means riders can feel the difference with smooth shifting and clutch engagement.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

Drag Specialties oils meet all the warranty criteria for Harley engines, so making the switch to Drag oils will not void new vehicle warranties. Additionally, Harley riders understand the value of an American-made product, and they can ride easy knowing Drag Specialties lubricants are made in the USA. In addition to oils, Drag Specialties has everything a dealer or rider needs to perform an oil change. A Drag Specialties oil change kit contains all necessary components in one part number, right down to a funnel for pouring the oil. Additionally, Drag has a full line of oil filters in both black and chrome finishes. Specialty options include a filter with magnetic rings to collect metal shavings and a filter with an included nut on the end for easy installation and removal. ■

3-Phase Charging System Kits

O

lder Harley-Davidsons are still popular, but their OE single-phase charging systems have limitations, especially when it comes to low-rpm output and heat. RMSTATOR is addressing those issues with new 3-phase charging system upgrade kits for a broad range of Evolution, Shovelhead, Sportster and Twin Cam models. The kits mark another step in RMSTATOR’s expansion into the V-Twin market. Since entering the segment in January, the company has added stators, flywheels and regulators for Harley-Davidson applications. Now, the new conversion kits deliver a complete charging system upgrade through an innovative, purpose-built design. “Our expansion into the V-Twin market has been a tremendous success, and we couldn’t have asked for a better partner than Drag Specialties to help bring RMSTATOR to this community of riders,” says Mark Meyer, Senior Account Manager. “With these conversion kits, the exciting part really begins. We’re bringing together decades of engineering expertise, proven charging system technology, and a deep understanding of rider needs to deliver complete solutions.” RMSTATOR is drawing on its charging-system experience in other vehicle segments for the new kits, which are designed and developed in-house. And, RMSTATOR hasn’t limited development to the workbench. According to the company, those kits have been road-tested over thousands of miles in real-world conditions. The benefits start with power. Riders get better charging output at low rpm along with a boost in overall output, helping the electrical system stay ahead of demand. A direct-to-battery wiring harness helps deliver that power efficiently, while the modern regulator design runs cooler than older setups. The stator is wound with high-grade copper rated to withstand heat, and connectors and a rubber grommet are included to simplify installation. RMSTATOR’s heavyduty flywheel is built to OEM size for a precise fit, while epoxy paired with steel capping helps keep the magnets securely in place. Each kit brings those components together with a 3-phase upgrade stator, a 50A machined aluminum series regulator, a conversion harness, an improved capped flywheel and a regulator mounting bracket. It is backed by extensive inhouse quality control and includes a two-year warranty. ■

RMSTATOR’s kit combines a 3-phase stator, 50A series regulator, conversion harness, capped flywheel and mounting bracket, helping deliver better charging output at low rpm.

TECH EXPLAINED A single-phase stator produces one output that rises and falls with engine rpm, limiting charging at idle and overall output. A 3-phase stator uses three coils spaced 120 degrees apart. As one phase drops, another peaks, creating a steadier, higher overall output that is less dependent on rpm. RMSTATOR pairs the 3-phase stator with a series regulator. Unlike a shunt regulator, which controls voltage by grounding excess output and turning it into heat, a series regulator temporarily disconnects the stator when power isn’t needed. According to RMSTATOR, this reduces current flow through the stator under low demand, lowering operating temperatures and improving voltage control and charging-system reliability. The machined billet-aluminum housing also dissipates heat 33 percent better than a standard molded casing, and its compact size makes it easy to mount.

Dealers know the importance of an efficient service department. The Hog Wild kit’s easy installation means customers can be back on the road quickly. The internal speaker cabinets don’t need to be removed (except in rare cases, when custom bars might make it necessary). Instead, simply remove the fairing grilles and swap out the speakers. The kit’s included T-harness means there’s no need to remove the fuel tank or seat to access the battery. That convenience keeps both dealers and customers happy, and since everything needed for installation is included, even ordering is simple. As with any Wild Boar Audio kit, the team at Hogtunes took a thoughtful design approach to ensure quality, durability and ease of use. For 2024 and newer models, Harley uses a separate amp and digital “A2B” signal. That means switching to an aftermarket setup could require the use of an expensive A2B adapter. The Hog Wild kit, though, retains the factory amp, so there’s no need for the adapter or the added expense. The Hog Wild kit features the premium components that dealers have come to expect from the brand. The speakers, which have large internal neodymium magnets, were completely redesigned for the kit. Their ultra-slim profile simplifies installation and integrates beautifully with the bodywork on 2024 and newer Road Glides and Street Glides. “As a distributor, we’re always looking for products that deliver real value to our dealers and riders, and this new amp and speaker kit from Wild Boar delivers value and performance,” says Greg Matter, Drag’s National Sales Manager. “The Hog Wild amp and speaker kit combines straightforward installation, superior performance and the quality our customers have come to expect from a trusted long-term partner like Hogtunes.” ■

G

rips are one of the few motorcycle components riders interact with every mile of every ride. Comfort, control and confidence all start at the handlebars. That’s the thinking behind Avon Grips’ K25 series. Built for 1-inch handlebars, the K25 grips combine billet aluminum construction with Avon’s proprietary Kraton rubber. The material features a soft, tacky feel designed to provide a secure grip while helping riders stay comfortable on longer rides. A diamond-knurled pattern adds texture and visual appeal without sacrificing comfort. The K25 series features a closed-end, no-flange design that complements a wide range of V-Twin styles, from traditional builds to modern customs. Riders can choose between chrome and

black anodized finishes to match the look of their motorcycle.

Avon’s K25 grips feature a diamondknurled Kraton rubber surface designed to provide comfort, control and a confident feel on the road.

Brake Upgrades with a Lasting Finish

GBrakes’ WAVE Reaper rotor combines a durable black finish with Cryo-Tech® treatment for customers looking to upgrade their V-Twin brakes.

G

Brakes is adding the WAVE® Reaper rotor to its V-Twin lineup, giving dealers another option for customers looking to upgrade their brakes with a rotor built custom or installed as a direct bolt-on replacement. The Reaper is now available in a new black finish, giving customers building blacked-out or custom projects another way to match their bike’s look. Like the rest of the GBrakes catalog, Reaper rotors are laser-cut, parallel double-disc ground and heat treated, then run through the company’s Cryo-Tech® process at its U.S. facility for added durability, longevity and strength.

Reaper rotors also use GBrakes’ floating rotor design, which lets the rotor expand independently of its carrier as it heats up, keeping pad contact flat and consistent. Every Reaper rotor comes in black via a coating process that penetrates the rotor rather than sitting on the surface, so the finish holds up over time under extreme braking conditions instead of wearing through to bare metal. Reaper rotors can be built to match a custom project through Drag Specialties’ custom rotor program. They are a direct bolt-on replacement for the front or rear. “GBrakes is just getting started; new designs, new color options, Cryo-Tech treatment and performance are always at the forefront for us,” says Alessandro Milesi, CEO, GBrakes. “This is just the beginning.” For your customers looking to upgrade their brakes with a rotor built to hold its color and its shape, the Reaper is worth a look. ■
