Sturgis Museum to Honor Women in Motorcycling B Y D O N E M D E

Starting at 12:45, I will have a presentation that covers numerous experiences that Florence had with my father back in the 1940s when they were traveling constantly on the motorcycle racing circuit. They were at the Sturgis rally in 1947 and on August 10th, Floyd battled in the Main event in 106-degree heat with Illinois rider Bill Tuman. Floyd led to the last lap until Tuman was able to get past and take the victory. The next week they were at a National Championship race at Springfield, Illinois where Floyd was in a terrible 4-rider crash in his Heat race. Tragically, one of the riders was killed and someone mistakenly identified Floyd as that rider. He was down on the track, and being attended to, but my mother waiting in the pits was led to believe that Floyd was dead. After an agonizing half hour for her, the mistake was finally clarified that he was okay.

W

ith the Sturgis Rally happening soon, I wanted to share some details about an event happening there that I am both excited about and involved with. As they do annually, on Monday, August 10th, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame will pay tribute to the late-Pearl Hoel, wife of Sturgis Rally founder Clarence “Pappy” Hoel. Pearl’s Jam, as it is known, is a celebration of women who continue to shape motorcycling, while honoring those who built its legacy. Beginning at 9:00 a.m., the day will kick off with the Buffalo Chip Pearl Hoel Legacy Award. Presentations will follow to recognize three women from the past with notable histories and contributions to the sport: Bessie Stringfield, Mary McGee and my mother, Florence Emde.

Despite this scare, after Springfield Floyd and Florence were again back on the road, heading to another National Championship race the following week at Milwaukee. Fully recovered from his crash the week before, Floyd sped to victory that day ahead of his Sturgis rival Bill Tuman and other top riders. What an incredible reversal of emotions she must have felt from the week before. My presentation will go into more details about the numerous highs and lows my mother realized in her years of traveling with my father Floyd during his racing career. I will also have copies there for sale of my latest book, Flying Floyd, and be happy to sign a copy for anyone. Looking forward to the rally. ■

hen Performance Bagger racing debuted at Laguna Seca during the COVID pandemic, the future of the fledgling series was still unwritten. Fast-forward to Memorial Day weekend 2026, and the opening rounds of the Drag Specialties Battle of the Baggers Presented by Memphis Shades arrived at Motorsports Park Hastings with a growing roster of teams, riders, sponsors and fans eager for another season of racing. Following Cody Gilmore’s second consecutive championship for Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson in 2025, the stage was set as teams and riders convened for the start of the new season. Familiar faces returned alongside new riders and team rosters, all looking to challenge the defending champion and take home the No. 1 plate.

The BRL prides itself on its grassroots, club-style platform that provides opportunities for teams of varied configurations to join in the fun and challenges of road racing. BRL has become the proving ground where pilot talent is focused and mechanical prowess is honed, in an atmosphere of camaraderie tinged with just enough competitive spirit to keep it intense. The opening weekend at Motorsports Park Hastings – described by Forbes magazine as “one of the top 10 places to speed legally” – featured nonstop racing action in 10 classes, including Bagger GP, Pro-Stock Bagger, Super Street Bagger, and American Twin Unlimited, plus liquid- and air-cooled twins. The facility’s road-racing course, camping options and fan-friendly atmosphere helped create a busy holiday weekend for racers and spectators alike. Like every season opener, Hastings featured plenty of adjustments. Riders tested new bikes and revised setups, some

joined new teams, and others tackled the circuit for the first time. Practice sessions proved critical as crews worked through setup changes and riders searched for speed. The Barnett Cables & Clutches Super Street Bagger class delivered immediate drama. Levi Badie, riding for HHI, led early in Round 1 before crashing midway through the race. Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson riders Joey Robinson and Shawn Hoffmann capitalized, finishing first and second, while two-time Air-Cooled Twins champion Jake McGuire rounded out the podium in third. Badie rebounded in Round 2, taking the victory ahead of Hoffmann in second and Robinson in third. The results immediately established Super Street Bagger as one of the classes to watch heading into the next rounds. The Andrews Products Bagger GP class was not without drama. Defending champion Cody Gilmore came in fourth

in Round 1, and then crashed in Round 2, apparently fighting tech issues with the bike. This opened the door for Seth Dahmer, a rising talent who appeared in several classes in 2025, riding for Tucker Speed after Tony Tucker elected not to compete in the class. Dahmer finished second in Round 1 behind TAB Performance/Indian Motorcycle rider Kyle Ohnsorg, before claiming the Round 2 victory. By the end of the weekend, Dahmer sat atop the class standings. Watch this class for shake ups as the season moves forward; it’s far from done! In Pirelli Pro Stock Bagger, Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson riders dominated as Brendan Foley and Jake Masters made the team proud, taking first and second respectively in both rounds. Foley, who rode essentially undefeated in 2025 to win the Super Street Bagger Championship, opened the series perfectly with two wins. Defending

Pro Stock Bagger Champion Masters is poised to push the envelope in subsequent rounds. Tony Tucker placed a respectable third in both rounds. With plenty of riders populating this class, it’s another one to watch. Caleb Childers of Buffalo Thunder Racing proved that racing undoubtedly has its up and downs. A military veteran, Childers joined BRL this year as a privateer, riding a bike he bought at the Lemans/Drag Specialties NVP and redesigned. Racing in Super Street Bagger and American Twins Unlimited, he endured multiple crashes, but in Round 2, it all came together and he took third place in American Twins Unlimited. HHI/Speed Farm’s Badie also went on to win both rounds of the Zipper’s American Twins Unlimited class, topping the standings in the points race. Also new to BRL, USMC veteran Carl Wilheim competed in the Air-Cooled Twins Class. Riding a Low Rider ST as a privateer under the banner Team Reckless, Wilheim wrapped up the season opener with two runner-up finishes, just behind independent rider Chase French, who swept the weekend. The action-packed opening rounds of the 2026 season stand in testament of the continued success and expansion of the motorcycle road racing culture surrounding BRL. Fans filled the grounds all weekend long as racers, vendors, teams and spectators gathered to celebrate the season opener.

That growth is reflected not only in attendance but also in the series’ expanding roster of aftermarket sponsors – a veritable who’s who of FatBook favorites. The paddock continues to attract companies that value real-world racetrack testing and rider feedback as part of product development. Sponsors include: All Balls Racing, Alloy Art, Alpinestars, Andrews High Performance Cams & Gears, Barnett Clutches & Cables, Bridgestone, DP Brakes, Drag Specialties, Dunlop, Figurati Designs, ICON, Lifestyle Cycles, Memphis Shades, Motion Pro, Pirelli, Red Line Synthetic Oil, Rox Speed FX, RWD V-Twin, S&S Cycle, Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson, Supersprox, UltraCool, Vance & Hines, Yuasa Battery and Zippers Performance Products. With championship contenders already emerging across multiple classes, the opening rounds set the stage for a competitive season ahead. “What a way to kick off 2026!” says series founder Rob Buydos. “I can’t wait to see what the rest of this season offers fans.” He’s not the only one. ■

BETTER TEAMS, BETTER BUSINESS WHY KNOWLEDGEABLE STAFF MATTER MORE THAN EVER

Many customers compare products, prices and reviews well before visiting a dealership. Expert guidance in the showroom helps turn that research into confident buying decisions.

“The LeMans Growth Academy helps dealerships turn team members into trusted advisors, creating a better experience for riders and stronger business results for dealers. And, because it’s provided free of charge, there’s simply no downside to taking advantage of it.” — Paul Devine LeMans Corporation Vice President of Sales & Marketing

F

or today’s powersports customers, the buying process often starts long before they visit a dealership. Research, product comparisons and recommendations increasingly happen online, raising the bar for what customers expect once they arrive in the showroom. “Customers are coming into motorcycle dealerships expecting more information, and they want it presented better, more focused on their needs. If they’re not getting that, what are they doing? They’re either buying this stuff online or they’re saying, screw this, if you can’t tell me about the best suspension and tires and seats for my bike, if you can’t solve my problem, I’ll go buy somewhere else,” says Kurt Kaufmann, with the LeMans Growth Academy.

22

on social media increasingly shape their buying decisions. By the time customers walk into your dealership, they’re often better informed or at least much closer to making a purchase. That changes the job for both dealership staff and the manufacturers supplying product information. First, customers need to be able to find your dealership online, know when you’re open and see the products you carry before they ever arrive. Then, once they’re in the store, your staff needs to know those products well enough to answer questions, solve problems and give customers a reason to buy from you instead of somewhere else.

PEOPLE POWER

Why? Because the dealership is still where most sales are made. The difference is that today’s customers often arrive after researching products online, comparing prices and narrowing their options. Estimates suggest about 80% of shoppers research online before ever walking through the door.

Outside of the retail powersports world, some restaurants and big-box stores think they can solve this information problem with more computers.

Customers do that research for several reasons. Economic pressure has shoppers comparing prices before they visit a store. They’re also looking to save time by using their phones or computers to narrow their choices. And recommendations from friends, influencers and others they follow

“Do powersports customers want to walk in and order their exhaust off a kiosk? Probably not,” says Kaufmann. “But in the absence of better trained staff, a decision is going to happen in this space, no different than what’s happening in these other retail spaces.”

LEMANS GROWTH ACADEMY BUILDING BETTER TEAMS Available anytime at no cost, the LeMans Growth Academy helps dealerships develop knowledgeable teams that build customer trust and support long-term business growth. Product knowledge builds confidence at the counter. The LeMans Growth Academy gives dealership teams practical training they can apply in every customer conversation.

The advantage dealerships still have is the human element. Staff who can answer questions, solve problems and build relationships give customers a reason to buy in person. But he also warns that dealers who fail to invest in the in-store experience risk losing the value that has traditionally set brick-and-mortar retailers apart. “As retail continues to evolve, the customer experience inside the dealership becomes even more important,” says Paul Devine, Vice President, Sales and Marketing for LeMans Corporation. “Consumers can research products anywhere, but they still value expert advice and personal service when making buying decisions.” LeMans created the Growth Academy to help dealerships build on one of their greatest strengths: knowledgeable people. Caleb Schillo, a salesperson at RJ Sport & Cycle in Duluth, Minnesota, has been putting the training to use. “The big immediate difference is confidence at the counter. Instead of guessing or second-guessing, you can speak clearly on a product and help guide someone to the right choice,” Schillo says. “On the tangible side, it leads to better conversations and more complete sales. Customers aren’t just buying one item; they’re getting everything they actually need the first time.” Kaufmann believes that confidence comes from a combination of personal commitment and industry support. Dealership staff have to invest in improving their knowledge, he says, and the industry has a responsibility to provide the training and resources to help them succeed. According to Schillo, the payoff extends beyond the sale. Using the Growth Academy training tools has also helped him build trust with customers. “Customers can tell when you know what you’re talking about,” he notes, “and that usually brings them back.”

Kaufmann believes the Growth Academy is about more than product knowledge. It’s also about rebuilding one of the industry’s greatest strengths: knowledgeable people. “A big part of this effort is reviving a community within the powersports marketplace. I would argue there’s been a degradation of that over the years as cheap knockoff products have come in, say through Amazon or promoted by ‘experts’ on YouTube,” says Kaufmann.

The goal, he says, is to strengthen the human capital inside dealerships by giving employees the tools to become informed, credible team members who are more likely to stay and succeed. For Jesse Barnes of Pro Motorsports in West Burlington, Iowa, one of the biggest benefits is that the training goes beyond individual products. “The training from the different brands in the LeMans Growth Academy has specifics on identifying different customer types and needs. It helps with ways to approach customers and ask questions to help them find the right products, which a salesperson can then apply across different brands and products,” says Barnes. “AMS Tires, for example, specifically teaches you ways to ask a customer questions and present a product from there based on their needs and wants.” Devine says that’s the larger objective. “The LeMans Growth Academy helps dealerships turn team members into trusted advisors, creating a better experience for riders and stronger business results for dealers,” he says. “And, because it’s provided free of charge, there’s simply no downside to taking advantage of it.” Available around the clock, the Growth Academy gives dealership employees the flexibility to complete training whenever it best fits their schedules. As the program continues to grow, Kaufmann says the Growth Academy can help dealerships: • Prepare for the next phase of retail’s evolution. • Inform the next generation of salespeople. • Turn workers into experts. • Create career pathways for more confident team members. ■

DEADWOOD CELEBRATES MOTORCYCLE CULTURE

A huge range of custom styles filled the show floor as builders and riders gathered for the fourth annual Black Hills Motorcycle Show in Deadwood, South Dakota over Memorial Day Weekend.

T

he fourth annual Black Hills Motorcycle Show brought riders, builders and enthusiasts to Deadwood, South Dakota, over Memorial Day Weekend for another celebration of custom motorcycles and the riding lifestyle. Hosted by longtime Drag Specialties dealer Deadwood Custom Cycles, the event once again filled the upstairs venue at the Deadwood Mountain Grand. What began as a local gathering has continued to grow into a regional destination, drawing motorcycle enthusiasts from across the area for a day centered around custom bikes, community and a good cause. Held just a few months ahead of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the show has carved out its own place on the calendar as an unofficial kickoff to the riding season in the Black Hills. “The Black Hills Motorcycle Show is for all of us that live in the Black Hills, love motorcycles, and work in the motorcycle or service industry,” says Jason Mook, owner of Deadwood

Meticulously restored classics shared space with radical customs and one-off creations. Builders and owners spent the day swapping stories while attendees examined the details that make each motorcycle unique. With a wide variety of classes available, the event welcomed motorcycles from across the spectrum of the riding world. More than 45 awards were presented, including 15 specialty awards and the coveted Best in Show honor, which carried a $1,000 cash prize. One of the day’s biggest draws was celebrity builder Luke Leatherman of Feuling Parts. Throughout the event, attendees had the chance to meet Leatherman, talk motorcycles and check out the impressive collection of bikes.

DEADWOOD MOUNTAIN GRAND – DEADWOOD, SOUTH DAKOTA: MAY 23RD

The Black Hills Motorcycle Show celebrated every era of motorcycling, with vintage Indians, restored classics and contemporary customs all drawing enthusiastic crowds.

A full slate of awards celebrated craftsmanship, creativity and attention to detail across dozens of classes at the Black Hills Motorcycle Show.

But the Black Hills Motorcycle Show has always been about more than trophies. From left: John Allan, winner of the Best in Show award for his 1995 FXSTC. He recieved his trophy while joined on stage by builder Paul Yaffe, Dana Tilling from Metal Wood Garage, who designed the trophy, Charlie Mook and Jason Mook.

Families moved through the venue together. Friends who hadn’t seen each other since last season reconnected. The atmosphere reflected the close-knit motorcycle community that continues to thrive throughout the Black Hills region. Outside of the bike show itself, the weekend featured free concerts, giveaways, raffles, tattoo artists and family-friendly activities. The Kids’ Corner once again gave younger attendees a place of their own, helping ensure the event remained welcoming to riders and non-riders alike. The show’s growth over the past four years reflects that broad appeal. Combined attendance since the event’s launch has surpassed 11,000 visitors, while more than 100 vendors and hundreds of custom motorcycles have participated along the way. Perhaps most importantly, the Black Hills Motorcycle Show continues to serve a larger purpose. As a nonprofit event,

proceeds from the 2026 show will stay local, benefiting the Lead-Deadwood School District and helping support school lunches and other classroom needs. As the crowds dispersed and another successful show ended, the focus naturally began to shift toward the busy riding months ahead and next year’s event. “Next year will be five years that we’ve held this show in Deadwood on Memorial Day Weekend, and there’s no sign of it slowing down,” Mook says. “We’ve got people who are now building bikes just to debut at our show. I think people are now starting to look forward to the show every year. As long as they let me, I’ll keep doing it.” ■

This 2023 Harley-Davidson Low Rider S travels with the Drag Specialties Open House Tour, showcasing how FatBook components can transform a modern performance cruiser.

rom his corner of the shop at Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson in metro Milwaukee, Joe Houpt has built everything from race machines to ground-up customs. He’s also developed a reputation for breathing new life into existing motorcycles, using components from Drag Specialties vendors to create fresh takes on familiar platforms. Many of those builds find a second life on the Drag Specialties Open House Tour, where they serve as rolling examples of what dealers and riders can accomplish with products found in the FatBook. The 2023 Harley-Davidson Low Rider S featured here is one of the bikes currently traveling on the Drag Specialties semi as it makes stops at dealer events and rallies across the country. “Dealers place an order of product from the

brands on the tour in order to have inventory at their event,” explains National Drag Sales Manager Greg Matter. “It gives consumers the opportunity to purchase after having direct access to the brand representatives they meet on the tour.” The bikes themselves play an important role in that effort. “The customized bikes support this effort by giving consumers a hands-on experience with the parts and a chance to see them live on a bike,” Matter says. That’s where Houpt and the team at Suburban Motors come in. Founded in 1975, Suburban Motors maintains a broad inventory of Harley-Davidson models, giving Houpt plenty of options when the Drag team needs a bike to showcase a vendor, product category or customization theme. Most

The rider cockpit combines THRASHIN controls, Drag Specialties by Gilles mirrors and an Arlen Ness Method speedometer mount for a streamlined setup.

projects begin with a suggested motorcycle model and a list of participating vendors. From there, Houpt develops a concept that complements the character of the bike while showcasing the products involved. It requires a strong understanding of both the platform and the extensive selection of parts available through the FatBook. For this project, the starting point was Harley-Davidson’s Low Rider S. The Low Rider name carries decades of history. Its roots trace back to Willie G. Davidson’s 1977 FXS Shovelhead, followed by the FXR models of the early 1980s. The Dyna Low Rider continued the lineage beginning in 1993 before Harley-Davidson consolidated the Dyna and Softail platforms in 2018. The Softail-based Low Rider S arrived in 2020, bringing a more performance-focused approach to the long-running model.

The result is a coordinated mix of carbon fiber and black finishes throughout the motorcycle. Arlen Ness supplied a 19-inch Qualifier carbon fiber front fender, Stage 2 *(EMIS Code 1) Method carbon fiber air cleaner kit and black coil cover. Saddlemen contributed a gloss carbon fiber rear fender, side cover set and dash panel, while Slyfox added carbon fiber shift and brake linkages.

To carry the theme throughout the bike, the stock fivegallon fuel tank, bikini fairing and struts were hydro-dipped to match the carbon fiber components. (Hydro dipping applies a printed film to a part’s surface, creating the appearance of materials such as carbon fiber.) Black finishes continue throughout the rest of the build. Arlen Ness Speed-5 wheels wrapped in Dunlop AE2 tires. Braking upgrades include Arlen Ness six-piston Differential Bore calipers front and rear, paired with GBrakes full-floating rotors and Ness Holeshot titanium black mounting bolts.

Its combination of aggressive styling, strong performance and customization potential made it a natural choice for this build. Playing to the model’s performance-oriented DNA, Houpt developed a concept that emphasized attitude without relying on the all-black look that has become common in recent years. Arlen Ness and Saddlemen helped establish the direction with a range of carbon fiber components. “Carbon fiber is really popular right now … so we tried to blend the carbon in all we could,” Houpt says.

LePera’s Kickflip Track Pleat Basketweave seat complements the Low Rider S build while maintaining a familiar riding position for long days in the saddle.

2023 HARLEY-DAVIDSON LOW RIDER S

2023 HARLEY-DAVIDSON LOW RIDER S CUSTOMIZED BY SUBURBAN MOTORS H-D Carbon fiber bodywork, Arlen Ness rolling stock and Kodlin Elypse indicators and Neowise LED turn signals help give the Low Rider S a clean, modern look.

exhaust system is paired with an Fi2000R *(EMIS Code 3) O2 fuel processor, while the Milwaukee-Eight 117 engine remains internally stock. THRASHIN components appear throughout the build as well. Those additions include a 1-inch Mid-Bend black handlebar, TSC black bolt grips, 1-inch knurled black throttle tube, points cover, shift linkage and Twice Cut master cylinder covers. Comfort and rider positioning received attention, too. Houpt selected a LePera Kickflip Basketweave seat that complements the carbon fiber theme while maintaining the stock 27-inch seat height. A Progressive Suspension 465 Series 12.6-inch shock with remote preload adjustment handles rear suspension duties, while the stock inverted fork remains in place. Up front, a Ness Method 7-inch Kickback riser kit helps complete the cockpit. Lighting upgrades include Kodlin Elypse LED 2-in-1 turn signals, Neowise 3-in-1 mini fender strut indicator lights and a Custom Dynamics ProGLOW color-changing LED engine and ground effects kit. Additional finishing touches come from Drag Specialties, including a steering damper kit, large-radius license plate mount assembly, custom black lever set, brake lines and clutch cable. Black and gold short-stem mirrors from Drag Specialties X Gilles complete the package. For Houpt, builds like this serve a purpose beyond displaying parts. “Not everyone can imagine it in your head without seeing it first. I run into that a lot. That’s what we’re showing people with these bikes we build.” The result is more than a customized Low Rider S. It’s a rolling example of how the right combination of parts, planning and vision can help riders and dealers turn an idea into a finished motorcycle. ■

very fall, Drag Specialties dealers, sales reps and vendor partners make their way to Milwaukee for one of the most important weekends on the V-Twin calendar. The North American NVP Product Expo returns to the Baird Center in Milwaukee Sept. 12-13, bringing together the people, products and training that help dealerships prepare for the seasons ahead. The annual event gives dealers an opportunity to get an early look at the newest products headed to dealerships while connecting directly with the manufacturers behind them. It’s a chance to ask questions, learn about upcoming releases and gain product knowledge that can help drive sales long after the show wraps up.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

As in recent years, Drag Specialties, Parts Unlimited and Parts Canada are joining forces at the North American NVP Product Expo. The combined event creates a packed show floor experience with products spanning nearly every corner of the powersports industry, making the Baird Center the place to be for dealers looking to stay current on what’s new. Of course, the products are only part of the story. Dealer Training remains a key part of the NVP experience, giving attendees valuable insight into new products, technologies and selling opportunities. Those sessions help dealers build product knowledge they can take straight back to the showroom and use to better serve riders and customers.

The NVP Product Expo has also long been valued for the faceto-face connections it creates. Dealers can spend time with vendors, catch up with sales reps and exchange ideas with fellow industry professionals from across North America. Those conversations often prove just as valuable as what is on display in a booth. When the show floor closes for the day, the fun continues. The popular Meet & Greet/Bike Show gives attendees a chance to relax, reconnect with industry friends and enjoy an evening away from the booths. After a day of walking the show floor, the Bike Show offers a chance to slow down and enjoy the motorcycles themselves. Expect everything from clean daily rides to radical custom builds brought by dealers, reps and LeMans personnel.

New products, dealer education and industry camaraderie combine to create an atmosphere that keeps attendees coming back year after year. Whether the goal is discovering new products, strengthening business relationships or preparing for the next selling season, the North American NVP Product Expo delivers a full weekend dedicated to helping dealerships succeed. Mark your calendar for Sept. 12-13 and plan to join the VTwin industry at the Baird Center in Milwaukee for the 2026 North American NVP Product Expo.

RED ROCK HARLEY-DAVIDSON’S ODE TO AMERICA’S 250TH Taylor Cifuentes photos

Red Rock Harley-Davidson unveiled its custom America 250 Road Glide at the grand opening of the Evel Knievel Experience in Las Vegas’ Arts District, showcasing patriotic styling and premium Drag Specialties components.

A

merica’s 250th anniversary deserves a memorable tribute, and Red Rock Harley-Davidson delivered one on two wheels. Starting with a 2026 Road Glide, the Las Vegas dealership transformed HarleyDavidson’s popular Bagger into a rolling salute to the nation’s milestone birthday.

The dealership started with a standard 2026 Road Glide from inventory, then Plehn contacted JC Mason, owner of Rolling Art Custom Paint in Phoenix, Arizona. Red Rock and Rolling Art have worked together for years, and Plehn’s direction was straightforward: red, white and blue, American flags and a design that left no doubt what the bike was built to celebrate.

The dealership, a three-time Platinum Bar and Shield Award winner, originally planned nothing more than a custom patriotic paint scheme. It didn’t stay that simple.

Rolling Art is known for its exchange program, where owners and dealers send in complete sets of take-off components in exchange for custom-painted production sets. But before any design becomes part of the program, it starts as a oneoff. America’s 250th was no exception. Mason developed sketches, Plehn approved the concept, and the first set was painted by hand.

“When Harley first came out with three Liberty models for America’s 250th, they didn’t include a Liberty version of the Road Glide,” says Red Rock H-D General Manager Mike Plehn. “But, since that’s such a popular model, I thought we needed to do one that would really stand out to celebrate the country’s big anniversary.”

“He’s the artist and I trust him,” Plehn says.

DRAG DEALER BUILD

The LePera TailWhip seat continues the red, white and blue theme with custom contrast stitching that ties the entire build together.

Mason was quick to credit Matt Andrews, one of the employees at Rolling Art. “Matt is one of my artists and he’s equally as responsible for the art as I am,” Mason says. Unlike the production version, this motorcycle wears its original bodywork. “The parts on this bike are the originals,” says Mason. “It has a mirror-chrome blue pearl base, and all the airbrush work was done by hand. It’s the very first one and it has some unique elements.” The gas tank features a Harley-Davidson emblem filled with a waving American flag. One saddlebag depicts the current 50-star flag while the other displays the Betsy Ross flag representing the original 13 colonies. A Harley 250th emblem completes the theme. To preserve the design’s exclusivity, Rolling Art limited production to just 50 paint sets – one for each state. While the paint launched the project, the motorcycle itself soon took on a life of its own. “Earlier in the year, we had a three-day Drag Specialties event at the dealership and our Drag Rep James ‘Woody’ Wood started talking to the guys in service about going bigger with the build,” says Marketing Manager Brandi Moya. “He could toss out the idea to top companies in the Drag Specialties FatBook and see who wanted to be involved.” With Plehn’s approval, Service Manager Dustin Ragan and Service Advisor John Wilson took over. Working against a tight deadline, they assembled a build around companies and products they know firsthand. That’s because at Red Rock Harley, 90 percent of the people in the shop ride – including all the guys in the service department.

A Klock Werks Sport Flare Windshield, THRASHIN cockpit components, Arlen Ness controls and Custom Dynamics lighting give the Road Glide a distinctive patriotic presence.

“Most of us here put thousands of miles on our own bikes and we’ve learned what works,” Ragan says. “We don’t recommend anything we won’t put on our own bikes.” That philosophy guided every decision. “We went to THRASHIN Supply for the bars and controls,” he says. “I mean, they have ‘Made in USA’ stamped directly on the product.” The cockpit centers around THRASHIN’s 9½-inch Pull Back OG Risers, 1-inch Mid Bend handlebars, chrome brake arm, P-54 Slim Brake Pedal, P-54 foot pegs and Bagger floorboards. Harley-Davidson Genuine Parts supplied the chrome front end kit and chrome hand controls, while Arlen Ness added Forged Mini Stocker mirrors along with Method grips and hand levers. Klock Werks completed the front end with a red Sport Flare Windshield and matching Flare Hand Guards.

Power comes from a Vance & Hines *(EMIS Code 3)Gaslighter 2-1 exhaust paired with a Feuling Chrome *(EMIS Code 1)BA air cleaner – with a red filter, of course – and Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Pro Street Tuner. Harley-Davidson Audio powered by Rockford Fosgate Stage III Fairing Speakers handles the soundtrack. Custom Dynamics Shark Demon LED turn signals, and a Shark Demon 2 Dual headlight modernize the lighting. “Custom Dynamics is a company we’ve always dealt with so that was the call,” Ragan says.

The hand-painted Betsy Ross flag honors America’s beginnings, while the Vance & Hines *(EMIS Code 3)Gaslighter 2-1 exhaust” reinforces the build’s performance-focused approach.

A LePera TailWhip seat with red, white and blue contrast stitching ties the patriotic theme together. Slyfox Track Pro Performance Wheels wrapped in Metzeler Cruisetec tires finish the build. “I’ve had my eye on those wheels, and I’ve been wanting to see them on a bike,” Wilson explains. “Now I’m gonna have to see them all the time - and want them myself.” For Ragan, the finished motorcycle represents more than a collection of premium parts. “The way this bike is set up… well, if any of us had a blank slate and unlimited funds, this is the bike we would build, and ride,” he says. “It represents the products we believe in, what we ride, and what we trust.” The completed Road Glide brings together products from more than a dozen companies, including Harley-Davidson Genuine Parts, into one cohesive custom build that celebrates America’s 250th anniversary.

The opposite saddlebag carries today’s 50-star American flag, balancing the Betsy Ross artwork while celebrating the nation’s past and present on one custom Road Glide.

Ride quality was another priority. “Legend Suspension is something we heavily believe in and we all ride it,” Ragan notes. “They make super solid product.” Legend Suspensions supplied REVO ARC rear suspension

The bike made its debut as the new Evel Knievel Experience opened in Las Vegas, taking its place among a collection of standout customs. What began as a patriotic paint project ultimately became something much bigger: a collaborative build that reflects the craftsmanship, creativity and pride that inspired it. Appropriately loud, proud and full of braggadocio, the finished Road Glide is a fitting tribute to America’s 250th anniversary. And if Evel were still around, who wants to bet he would have asked for the bike’s keys? ■

Quick-Detach Saddlebags for a Range of Bikes

T

housands of miles on the road and countless hours in the shop are the only way to take a complex idea from a concept to a finished product worthy of being stamped with the THRASHIN Supply Co® name. After years in the making, THRASHIN Sport Saddlebags are here for Dynas, FXRs and M8 Softails, and they feature a highly versatile and functional quick detach system. Like many successful products, THRASHIN Sport Saddlebags were born from riders looking for a better solution. The THRASHIN crew wanted versatile storage that worked across multiple models without being bulky or awkward. From there, the team began designing, testing and refining prototypes until every detail was dialed in.

Anyone familiar with THRASHIN’s social media channels or YouTube vlog knows the brand is built around riding. That rider-first approach carries through to product development, and the Sport Saddlebags are no exception. With plenty of miles available for real-world testing, the team spent years refining the design.

THRASHIN Sport Saddlebags combine streamlined styling with practical cargo capacity, giving riders expandable storage without interfering with most exhausts, shocks or backrests.

“Five years ago, I had an early prototype of this mechanism on my Dyna on the way to Sturgis, so we’ve been testing and developing for a long time,” says Juan Arceo, Lead Mechanical Engineer at THRASHIN Supply. The result is a saddlebag that balances functionality, durability, style and convenience, shaped by years of testing and development on the road. “Last year to Sturgis, we had five sets of 90 percent finished Sport Saddlebags on the road on different riders’ bikes,” says Lance Coury, THRASHIN’s Founder. “We took them through various weather changes and road conditions across thousands of miles, and we’ve been continuously testing them since. That led to the finished product we’re incredibly happy to share with everyone today.”

Sport Saddlebags make it quick and easy to add functional storage to 1996-2017 Dynas, FXRs and most M8 Softails (separately available mounting bracket required for FXR only). The included stainless-steel bungs and the spacers simply screw into the existing strut bolt locations, then the assembled Sport Saddlebags are ready to drop on. A standout feature of the Sport Saddlebags is their quick-detach design. Each bag uses an ABS-molded backing plate reinforced with a steel bracket, allowing the bags to maximize storage capacity while maintaining a close-to-the-bike profile. The mounting system uses a stationary front mount and a quick-detach rear mount with an adjustable range from 7 to 10.5 inches. That flexibility allows the bags to fit a wide range of motorcycle models and years. The patented quick-detach mechanism features CNC-machined billet construction and five points of contact when seated on the mounting bungs, helping to keep the bags securely attached. Each pair of Sport Saddlebags includes the quickdetach hardware, spacers, stainless steel mounting bungs and a thread-in lock installed from inside the bag to help deter theft. Riders can add luggage locks to the zippers for additional security.

A high-visibility interior liner helps riders quickly locate gear, while integrated storage pockets and a tether strap keep essentials organized and secure.

The Sport Saddlebags are durably constructed from 1680 D ballistic nylon for the primary body, YKK zippers throughout and genuine leather lids. Combined, the bags offer 40L of capacity standard, or 60L with the 2-inch zipper expansion opened. That’s quite a bit of room for a pair of bags that are less then 2 feet long, 13½ inches tall and only about 7 inches deep. The interior of the Sport Saddlebags feature a high-vis interior liner that makes it easier to see what’s inside, plus an inner side pocket and tether strap so nothing falls out by accident. To make sure riders are covered for anything the trip throws at them, Sport Saddlebags include rain covers complete with an elastic cinch, safety strap and reflective THRASHIN logo for added visibility. “Another great feature, something we really enjoyed on the way to Sturgis, is that customers can attach the THRASHIN Passenger bag directly to Sport Saddlebags with our accessory Molle strap kit and be ready to hit the road for weeks if they want to,” says Lance. The mounted position of Sport Saddlebags also takes into account other bolt-on accessories that customers might

have. They leave plenty of clearance for THRASHIN and other exhaust systems because they sit higher than traditional sport-touring saddlebags. Plus, they don’t interfere with piggyback shocks or quick-release backrests and work with most sissy bars. ■

or many riders in the Northwest, a trip to Boise also means a stop at High Desert Harley-Davidson.

That kind of destination dealership doesn’t happen by accident. After acquiring Cycle Nuts & Bolts in 2005, the TMI Group set out to build a Harley-Davidson dealership unlike any other in Idaho. High Desert HarleyDavidson opened in 2008, and today the 54,000-square-foot dealership employs more than 60 team members while serving customers from several neighboring states. Located just west of downtown Boise, the Drag Specialties dealership serves a region where powersports and outdoor recreation are woven into the local lifestyle.

“Since opening our doors … our mission has been to create a space where riders feel at home,” says GM and Owner Mark Dukes, “where the love of the open road is shared, and where every visit feels like reconnecting with old friends.” Judging by the number of riders willing to make the trip, that vision has become reality. High Desert Harley-Davidson has become a destination for riders across the Northwest. Customers travel from Washington, Oregon, Montana, Utah and beyond to shop one of the region’s largest selections of new and pre-owned Harley-Davidson motorcycles, with more than 500 units on the showroom floor at any given time.

Riders from across the Northwest make the trip to High Desert Harley-Davidson, where a wide selection of motorcycles, parts and apparel makes every visit worthwhile.

The draw goes well beyond inventory. Riders can compare models, take a test ride and find everything from parts, accessories and apparel to financing, service, performance upgrades and Motorcycle Safety Foundation-supported rider training under one roof. “They run a very welcoming store, and they have a lot to offer as a shopping experience for anyone interested in HarleyDavidson motorcycles,” says Abe Mingo, the dealership’s Drag Specialties sales rep, who serves southern Idaho and Montana. “They have a stellar parts department and apparel department. And they provide a great customer experience throughout the buying process.” “There’s a lot of opportunities for recreation around Boise, and the High Desert team does a good job of supporting that lifestyle,” says Mingo. “They just check all the boxes and do a great job of using their programs and providing a broad range of products to customers. They deliver the full product portfolio.”

That commitment to the riding community extends beyond rider education. One of the dealership’s signature events is Idaho Patriot Thunder, a June charity ride that attracts more than 500 riders from across the region. The event raises funds to support Idaho military members, veterans and their families, and has become one of the state’s premier motorcycle charity rides. Idaho Patriot Thunder primarily benefits Operation Warmheart and the Idaho Guard Family Support Fund, two nonprofit organizations that provide financial assistance and basic necessities, including food and clothing, to military families during times of need. “This day reflects our commitment to giving back and supporting those who serve our community and country,” says Schliep.

BUILDING COMMUNITY To stay connected with the Treasure Valley community, the High Desert team organizes rides, dealership events, community gatherings and fundraisers for local charities. “We regularly host dealership events that bring riders and community members together, including events every Saturday, bike nights, and our Learn to Ride program,” says Hannah Schliep, who oversees marketing and events for the dealership. High Desert partners with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation to help bring new riders into the sport. More than 20 MSF-certified coaches lead the interactive Basic Rider Course, introducing hundreds of new riders to responsible motorcycling each summer.

Motorcycles, performance parts, riding gear and accessories all come together under one roof. As Drag rep Abe Mingo says, High Desert Harley-Davidson delivers the full product portfolio.

The dealership also gives customers a reason to linger. The Kickstand Lounge, pool tables and gathering spaces create a welcoming atmosphere long after the shopping is done. High Desert also serves as home to a large regional H.O.G. chapter, hosting new-member orientation meetings and other events throughout the year. In 2025, the chapter logged 949,354 miles, earning recognition as the Northwest region’s mileage leader. Those experiences are central to the dealership’s marketing strategy. Beyond word-of-mouth referrals, High Desert builds customer loyalty through events, relationships and community involvement. “We reach customers through a combination of digital marketing, social media, email campaigns, community partnerships, event marketing, traditional advertising, and in-store experiences,” says Schliep. Whether customers first connect online or walk through the front door, the goal is the same: create an experience that keeps them coming back. “We focus on making every purchase process easy and transparent, whether someone is shopping in person or online,” says Schliep. “Many customers discover us through our digital inventory and online content, then choose to travel because of our selection, knowledgeable staff, and commitment to creating a great buying experience. Our goal is to be a destination dealership that riders remember and recommend to others.”

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

A PARTNER IN DRAG SPECIALTIES On the service side, High Desert focuses on building relationships that extend well beyond the initial purchase. It’s not about onetime transactions, according to Schliep, but about welcoming customers into the Harley-Davidson lifestyle no matter how they choose to participate. Drag Specialties and the FatBook play an important role in that effort. “The Drag Specialties FatBook is the perfect palette for those opportunities,” says Kiley Yee, parts manager at High Desert. “One of our more recent builds involved a customer and his 2014 FLHTK, and a ‘14 Limited was not part of his vision. With free rein of the FatBook and nearly $50k, the stock bike was updated to a custom look with the modern handling and performance of a race-inspired bagger. This is what we do.” Mingo visits the dealership weekly to assist with products, returns and any issues the team encounters. “Abe is a great and very helpful Drag rep,” says Yee. “We’ve been very fortunate to have someone like Abe vying for us.” With a Drag Specialties warehouse nearby, High Desert is able to receive most orders quickly. Success hasn’t slowed the dealership’s momentum. High Desert recently completed an exterior renovation and is planning interior updates to create a more modern, comfortable and efficient environment for customers. At the same time, it plans to expand its events calendar, riding opportunities and rider training programs.

High Desert Harley-Davidson stocks products from leading Drag Specialties vendors, including Z1R helmets, Saddlemen seats and Klock Werks windshields, making it easy for riders to outfit both bike and rider.

The investment reflects a dealership that’s continuing to grow. High Desert Harley-Davidson has earned recognition as an Idaho Top Workplace for five consecutive years, while business remains strong heading into the second half of 2026 with year-over-year growth expected, and the dealership continues to rank among the nation’s highest-performing Harley-Davidson dealerships. The focus, however, remains the same: helping more riders enjoy the Harley lifestyle.

High Desert Harley-Davidson relies on its partnership with Drag Specialties for product support, custom builds and the aftermarket selection customers expect.

“Our goal is to be more than just a motorcycle dealership,” says Dukes. “We strive to be a destination for riders, a supporter of our local community, and a place where lasting relationships are built through shared experiences, charitable giving, and a passion for the riding lifestyle.” ■

CARBON FIBER

Be Bold, Go Fast

Carbon Fiber Parts for Style and Performance

W

hen it comes to saving weight on a race bike, swapping out stock bodywork for carbon fiber replacements is a great way to shave pounds. Saddlemen Race Development was formed in 2021 to build racing Harley-Davidson Road Glides and Pan Americas, and that meant developing all-new carbon fiber bodywork and other components for the team’s race bikes. Those early efforts quickly led to Saddlemen becoming the supplier of premium quality carbon fiber parts to most of the paddock in the King of the Baggers class, and then outfitting the entire pack of FIM MotoGP Bagger World Cup spec racers. Now, Saddlemen carbon fiber parts are also available for street riders, and they can all be found in the pages of the FatBook. Performance Baggers get the same elevation in style and weight savings with a carbon fiber Touring dash, front and rear fenders, a set of side covers and other components. Dealers get to show it all off – and attract a new sales segment – with the new Saddlemen Performance Carbon Fiber floor display. Saddlemen’s product line for Performance Bagger products has been growing along with the segment’s own continued rise in popularity. What started with performance-oriented seats suitable for track or street has expanded to include products like the Performance Carbon Fiber line. In addition to Touring bikes, there are fitments for Softail, Dyna, FXR and even Sportster models. But Bagger is where most of the action happens. “It’s no surprise that Harley Touring models are seeing the most growth in carbon fiber components,” says Saddlemen’s Tom Monroe. “The Performance Bagger segment is still growing, and with the rise of the Road Glides in professional Bagger racing, it’s becoming ‘race on Sunday, sell on Monday’ all over again.” While street riders will see some benefits from the weight savings, it’s also true that carbon fiber has other selling points going for it. There are always Harley-Davidson riders who are interested in the newest look, the cutting edge of what’s new in terms of styling for their bike.

Saddlemen Performance Carbon Fiber components help riders reduce weight while adding race-inspired style. Shown here are the Touring dash (1), front fender (2) and rear fender (3), all available in gloss or matte finishes.

SADDLEMEN

Valued at $1,000, Saddlemen’s Performance Carbon Fiber floor display is available free through the company’s buy-in program and helps showcase the growing carbon fiber lineup.

What began on the racetrack now has a place on the street. Saddlemen’s carbon fiber components have become a familiar sight throughout the Bagger racing paddock.

Small part, big impact. Saddlemen’s M8 Coil Cover adds modern carbon fiber styling to Milwaukee-Eight models and is an easy install for riders looking to update the look of their bike.

Monroe says. “It adds the look of modern performance to any bike. It’s a new look and it’s a bold statement.” The fact that it’s easy for any garage mechanic to install also makes it easier for the customer to justify. Upgrading bodywork is a quick way to significantly change the look of a bike. Plus, customizing with carbon fiber doesn’t have to be expensive. Saddlemen’s M8 Coil Cover has a $199 retail price, but it punches above its weight in style. All these factors add up to make carbon fiber components an attractive upgrade package for a Bagger rider who wants a quick, affordable and dramatic upgrade for their bike. Saddlemen produces their carbon fiber components in both gloss and matte finishes, and some of the components feature a billet aluminum trim piece that ties in with other billet components you might find on a bike, like bar risers or foot controls. However, there’s also a chance to make a statement that’s even more bold since the carbon fiber can be painted.

Monroe’s advice on that? “These pieces can be painted like any other fender or side covers, and a clever painter will use a tinted clear or a paint scheme that reveals the carbon weave in interesting ways.” One of the best ways to get a rider interested in carbon fiber components is to show off the product itself. Saddlemen has made it easy, with the new Performance Carbon Fiber dealer display. Standing 62 inches tall, it’s high enough to turn heads, but the base is only 19˝x13˝ to minimize floor space. This display features two of the line’s most popular pieces — a front fender and a dash—making it a great way to show off the quality and inspire riders. ■

Right-Sized Boost

Expanding Turbo Options for Milwaukee-Eights

Designed for 117-inch-and-larger Milwaukee-Eight applications, Trask’s Stage 2 Tornado Turbo System integrates cleanly while supporting higher-output performance combinations.

F

ew segments of the V-Twin aftermarket evolve as quickly as performance. Trask Performance has watched customer expectations rise alongside gains in engine output. Riders want more power than ever, but they also expect reliability, rideability and a strong overall riding experience. For years, riders looking to boost performance from their Harley-Davidson motorcycles followed a familiar path: improved airflow, cam upgrades and increased displacement. Those upgrades remain relevant today, but modern riders have more options than ever when it comes to reaching their performance goals.

The motorcycles themselves have evolved as well. Milwaukee-Eight engines now leave the showroom with more displacement than previous generations, while aftermarket combinations continue to push performance further. Dealers and performance shops are now supporting a wider range of applications than at any point in recent memory. To meet those demands, Trask Performance expanded its *(EMIS Code 3) Tornado Turbo System lineup, available exclusively through Drag Specialties, with the introduction of Stage 2. Together, Stage 1 and Stage 2 provide a turbo solution built around a simple principle: matching

“Milwaukee-Eight performance has changed significantly over the last several years,” says Nick Trask. “Factory engines are larger, aftermarket combinations are more capable, and customer expectations continue to rise. We wanted to give shops the ability to properly match the turbocharger to the application while maintaining the fit, reliability and rideability riders expect from a Trask system.” That principle has guided Trask Performance’s approach to forced induction from the beginning. Built on years of

development, testing, racing and real-world experience, the Tornado Turbo System is designed as a compact package that delivers the benefits of turbocharging without unnecessary complexity. For many riders, turbocharging remains one of the most effective ways to increase engine output without extensive internal engine work. Rather than relying solely on displacement, a properly engineered turbo system increases the volume of air entering the engine. The result is predictable power with smooth, consistent delivery.

a straightforward path to significant power gains on readily available pump fuel. As a bolt-on installation, they provide a complete forced-induction solution without the extensive engine work required through conventional builds. As displacement continued to increase across the Milwaukee-Eight platform, it became clear that a single turbocharger strategy would no longer fit every application.

upgrade. For many customers, appearance is part of the decision, and the system is designed to look like it belongs on the bike. Shops can tailor the final look through multiple finish options, including polished or black components paired with a brushed stainless exhaust, or a fully blacked-out configuration.

Larger-displacement engines naturally require more airflow. Whether factory-built or part of a more aggressive combination, airflow demands increase as displacement and power goals rise. Rather than applying the same solution to every build, Trask developed Stage 2 for higher-demand applications.

Turbocharging continues to gain acceptance across the V-Twin market. What was once viewed as a niche or racefocused modification is now recognized as a practical path to real-world power. Advances in tuning, engine management and system refinement have made modern turbo applications more predictable, reliable and better suited to street applications.

Engineered for 117-inch-and-larger Milwaukee-Eight combinations, Stage 2 increases airflow capacity where engine size and output demand more. Matching the turbocharger to the engine’s airflow requirements helps the system perform as intended in larger, higher-output engines.

That shift creates opportunity for dealers. Customers who once focused on extensive internal engine builds are increasingly considering turbo systems as another path to meaningful power gains while maintaining rideability and long-term dependability.

Stage 2 also gives shops more flexibility when planning a customer’s upgrade path. Some want immediate gains. Others are building toward larger displacement or future engine modifications over time. In those cases, Stage 2 can serve as a foundation for future upgrades without requiring a turbocharger change later.

Exclusively available through Drag Specialties, the Tornado lineup gives shops access to a turbo system backed by decades of development and real-world application. In a competitive aftermarket, that exclusivity matters. It provides dealers with a solution not available through every distribution channel, backed by Drag Specialties. ■

Power to the Ground

A V-Twin Tire with Sportbike DNA

B

y this point, it’s clear that the performance Bagger scene is here to stay. As V-Twins roll off the line with more performance capabilities than ever before, riders are also quick to amp up a bike’s potential with aftermarket suspension, engine components and other upgrades. That means the tires need to be just as performance oriented, and the Pirelli DIABLO Powercruiser tire delivers. Sportbike riders already know that any tire bearing the DIABLO name is one that provides outstanding performance, getting horsepower transferred to the road

with consistency and agility. The same R&D process and attention to detail that go into every DIABLO sportbike tire were applied to the DIABLO Powercruiser tire to ensure it meets the high-performance needs of the modern V-Twin, as well as the needs of the rider who wants to push the limits. Pirelli’s racing DNA can be found throughout the Powercruiser tire, but at the same time, it is clearly a tire for the V-Twin and custom bike segments. The Powercruiser marks Pirelli’s first entry in the Custom-Touring line of high-performance tires for Cruisers and Baggers. It has sporty characteristics combined with the classic V-Twin styling and durability riders want. “V-Twin riders today are pushing their bikes harder than ever. They’re upgrading suspension, adding power and riding more aggressively,” said Joseph Lee, Marketing Manager, Pirelli. “The DIABLO Powercruiser was engineered from the ground up for this segment, not adapted from something else. It brings the compound technology and structural DNA of Pirelli’s race-proven DIABLO line to bikes built to cruise but increasingly built to perform.”

Pirelli engineered the DIABLO Powercruiser from the ground up for today’s high-performance Cruisers and Baggers, blending sporty handling with confident road manners.

Developed specifically for the Custom-Touring segment, the DIABLO Powercruiser combines raceinspired technology with the durability Cruiser riders expect.

One of the most notable characteristics of the Powercruiser tire is its stability, even on heavier Touring models. Riders can especially feel that stability during acceleration, braking and cornering, even at high speeds. Stability is also experienced in wet conditions, thanks in part to the high level of silica in the dual-compound tires. The excellent grip in all conditions means riders can have confidence on both sunny and rainy days. A quick look at the shoulders of the Powercruiser tire shows that it’s not just your average V-Twin tire. The slick shoulders are one of the hallmarks of Pirelli’s DIABLO sportbike tires, and this characteristic has carried over to the Powercruiser. Riders can expect outstanding grip in the corners thanks to that design feature. Cornering is also aided by the sporty profile of the Powercruiser tire. Its shape promotes agility, handling and a high level of steering precision. Pirelli’s Flash design in the central part of the tread pattern is another sign of the Powercruiser tire’s ability to perform. The central Flash grooves promote even wear and help evacuate water efficiently, meaning it’s stable in all weather conditions. The DIABLO Powercruiser tire is available in all the main sizes for popular American Baggers and Cruisers. ■

Back on the Road

Replacing Aging Turn Signal Modules

T

here are a number of reasons why, at some point, a bike’s turn signal module (TSM) should be replaced. The SMART TSM from Custom Dynamics addresses each of those reasons for 2000-2013 Harley-Davidson models with the easy plug-andplay installation dealers expect from the brand. That one little part can make the difference between whether a bike is acting up or running without a hitch. There are plenty of signs that an OEM TSM has failed, and as these models get older, the number of them needing a new TSM is only going to grow. Custom Dynamics recommends stocking one of each of the four TSM fitments to seamlessly get a bike serviced and back on the road. “Keeping replacement TSM modules in stock allows dealers to quickly diagnose and resolve issues like intermittent starting problems, inoperative turn signals and erratic security system behavior – without waiting on hard-to-find OEM parts,” says Custom Dynamics Chief Sales Officer Rob Bluma. “For riders, that means less downtime and a faster return to the road. For dealers, it means turning a potential service bottleneck into a same-day repair opportunity.” And those OEM parts really are hard to find, since they are not available anymore. The Custom Dynamics TSM keeps dealers from having to search for a secondhand OEM TSM that might or might not do the trick.

2000-2013 models wants to upgrade their turn signals to LED, that would ordinarily require a Signal Stabilizer or load equalizer. The TSM, though, allows direct compatibility with LED signals and incandescent bulbs alike, while also replacing the aging TSM itself. Another perk of the Custom Dynamics TSM is that it eliminates the need for a key fob. This is more than just a convenient change for the rider. It’s also ideal for dealers who sell used bikes, where the original key fobs might be missing. Simply swapping out the TSM eliminates that issue entirely. The SMART TSM from Custom Dynamics replaces aging OEM modules on 2000-2013 Harley-Davidson models and offers compatibility with LED or incandescent lighting in one easy-to-install package.

The SMART TSM is designed with dealers in mind and can be programmed using the CanDo Moto Mini scan tool for efficient setup after installation.

Replacing the TSM isn’t always just about fixing something that’s broken. If a rider on one of those

Once the new TSM is installed, the programming process takes just 15 minutes to get bikes up and running again. Custom Dynamics had dealers in mind when designing the TSM. It is compatible with the CanDo Moto Mini scan tool for a smooth, intuitive process. The TSM can also be programmed with the TechnoResearch diagnostic tool. Once the TSM has been installed, dealers and riders can both count on the reliability expected from Custom Dynamics. While the OEM TSM uses electrolytic capacitors, which are inevitably going to fail at some point, the Custom Dynamics version uses modern electronics to ensure reliability and performance. The part also comes with a 3-year warranty from the company. ■

Keeping Pace

Tires for a Rider Pushing the Limits

hen Ethan White stopped to chat about the Avon tires he runs on his Harley-Davidson, he was somewhere in the middle of nowhere down in Mexico. He had just finished helping get a Raptor with broken suspension limping along again. That sort of adventurous spirit has defined White’s career, and now, Avon Tyres is part of the adventure.

“I was doing a lot with motorcycles, but it was all passion, and I was going to court a lot for getting in trouble on the street,” White explains. “The judge was always saying, ‘you need to go to the track.’” That was the right choice. Not only was White no longer getting in trouble for his street-riding antics, but he was talented enough that soon, he was making a living as a professional racer, and he relocated to Long Beach, California. Eventually, though, White began to look at a more long-term career in the motorcycle industry. Transitioning from pro racer to powersports entrepreneur hasn’t been easy, he says, but his business has been growing. It was while networking at last year’s AIMExpo that White ran across Don Argento with Avon Tyres. That connection led to White trying out a set of Avon Cobra Chrome tires for the first time. He mounted them on his Harley, then, as he says, “put them through all kinds of paces.” For a rider like White, that meant burnouts and stunt riding. Despite the extreme riding conditions, the Cobra Chromes held steady. “They hook up good, and there’s no delamination,” White says. “Delamination is something we deal with as stunt riders, and this hasn’t happened. The tires perform well, and they wear evenly. For a street tire, it’s an easy win.” White also appreciates the styling of the tire, especially the snake print pattern.

Ethan White puts motorcycles through their paces, whether he’s racing, stunt riding or exploring new roads. Avon Tyres helps keep him rolling wherever the journey leads.

Growing up in Ohio, White got to see his cousins riding motorcycles but never got to try it out for himself. So, when he turned 18, he bought his own motorcycle. Back then, White was into super moto while also building a career as a professional downhill skateboard racer. Meeting Roland Sands led to a conversation about racing in the Hooligan flat track championship, and White was quick to seize the opportunity.

68

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

Now, White is also running a set of Avon Speedmaster MKII tires on his FXR, and he appreciates the classic look of those tires, making them ideal for vintage bikes as well as choppers. Whatever adventure is next for White, he’s also mindful about paving the way for the next generation of riders. “I want to be a steward of the motorcycle industry. I want to be like the old guys!” he says. While he does that, he’ll be putting in the miles on his Avon tires. ■

Performance Suspension with Room to Tune

W

hether your customers spend their weekends carving through backroads, commuting across town or heading to the occasional track day, suspension can make a major difference in how a motorcycle feels and performs. Progressive Suspension’s 494 Sport Series Shocks are designed for riders who want responsive handling and adjustability without stepping into a premium-price category. Built around a lightweight aluminum body, the 494 Sport Series combines a high-pressure gas monotube design with deflective disc damping technology to deliver consistent performance across a range of riding conditions. “The 494 Series shock is more than just a sexy looking shock.” says Progressive Suspension Sales Manager David Nissen. “It has the adjustability and performance to back up the aggressive styling.” A progressive-rate coil spring helps balance comfort and control, while hand-adjustable preload and adjustable rebound damping allow riders to fine-tune the setup for their preferred riding style.

Designed for riders who demand more from their suspension, the Progressive Suspension 494 Sport Series Shocks pair sport-focused performance with real-world versatility.

An engineered jounce bumper (a bump stop that helps soften hard impacts when suspension travel is maxed out) with an integrated metal cup also helps smooth and control bottoming, adding confidence when the pace picks up or road conditions become less predictable. Together, these features create a shock package that performs consistently whether riders are navigating daily traffic, tackling winding roads or spending time on a closed course. Available in standard- and heavy-duty versions for select applications, every 494 Sport Series Shock is hand-built, tuned and dyno-tested before leaving the factory. The shocks are also backed by a Lifetime Limited Warranty. Since its founding in 1982, Progressive Suspension has grown into one of the largest aftermarket motorcycle suspension manufacturers in the United States. In addition to serving the aftermarket, the company supplies suspension components for a variety of OE applications. Progressive relies on a team of ride-control-trained engineers who use computer modeling, shock dynos and real-world testing to develop suspension systems. Products are assembled at the company’s manufacturing facility, where each unit is dynotested before leaving the factory. Quality-control procedures are applied throughout the production process, from assembly through final inspection. ■

CHAIN DRIVE KITS

Chain Reaction

An Upgrade Built for Precision and Durability

Whether servicing a high-mileage bike or tackling a cam chest upgrade, S&S Cycle Chain Drive Kits provide direct-replacement convenience with precision-machined components built for durability.

E

ngine performance is about more than big-ticket parts. The components that keep everything working together matter just as much.

For customers maintaining a daily rider or building for more performance, accuracy and durability can make all the difference. That’s why S&S Cycle developed its Chain Drive Kits around the company’s “Proven Performance” philosophy. “S&S Cycle has been known for performance since our inception. But through the years we have learned that ensuring the entire engine is ready for big power is just as important as our high performance designs,” says Howard Kelly, Vice President of Marketing, S&S Cycle. These direct-replacement kits are built to help deliver accurate cam timing while standing up to the demands of modern V-Twins. At the center of the system are precision-machined sprockets designed for smoother chain engagement and long-term durability. The details matter. S&S manufactures the sprockets from high-quality bearing steel selected for its strength and wear characteristics. The material delivers exceptional tooth wear resistance without brittleness, helping extend sprocket life in highload and shock-load conditions. That durability translates into confidence for riders and value for customers. Components that resist wear can help keep motorcycles on the road longer and reduce the need for premature replacement.

74

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

S&S Cycle offers individual camshaft and pinion sprockets along with camshaft shim kits, giving builders the components needed for accurate setup and long-term durability.

The precision-machined design also promotes smoother chain engagement. Less harsh engagement means reduced wear on the sprocket teeth over time while helping maintain accurate cam timing throughout the life of the system. For dealers, the appeal is straightforward. S&S Chain Drive Kits offer a simple upgrade path as well as a directreplacement solution for service work and engine builds. Whether a customer is refreshing a high-mileage motorcycle or replacing worn components during a cam chest project, the kits are designed to fit right into the plan. The lineup covers both Milwaukee-Eight and Twin Cam applications. Complete chain drive kits are available, including select options equipped with cam chain tensioners. Riders and builders can also choose individual camshaft and pinion sprockets when specific replacement parts are needed. A camshaft shim kit rounds out the offering. hether a Harley-Davidson is fresh off the showroom floor or built for added horsepower and torque, customers need a clutch setup that matches their riding style and performance goals. Barnett Clutches and Cables aims to provide that flexibility with its new bolt-on clutch retainer assembly, the Stinger. “The Stinger Spring Retainer Assembly reflects our ongoing mission to push the boundaries of performance and reliability,” said Chance Darling at Barnett. “We’ve combined advanced engineering with rider feedback and real-world testing to create a component that performs when it matters most.” Barnett designed the Stinger for clutches using standard springs, making it a fit for riders who prefer stock-spec clutch lever effort. The kit includes two additional sets of clutch springs. One set is lighter, reducing lever pull by 25 percent for easier operation during everyday street riding. The second set is a heavy-duty option that is approximately 20 percent stiffer than stock and intended for higher-performance applications. According to Barnett testing, these springs can handle more than 190 horsepower and high torque.

Barnett’s Stinger Spring Retainer Assembly gives Harley-Davidson customers multiple clutch spring options in one package, making it easy to tailor clutch feel for street riding or higherperformance applications.

The centerpiece of the assembly is the Barnett Stinger Spring Plate. Barnett CNC-machines the component from premium-grade material to enhance strength and durability. It is designed to withstand the demands of high-horsepower Harley-Davidson applications, including 2013-2016 CVO models and all Milwaukee-Eight Bagger and Softail models.

FL Touring models and 2018-25 Softails. Featuring the company’s K22 friction plates for more oil flow, this kit will deliver increased clutch life and smoother operation. It also comes with a set of tempered steel drive plates and a set of heavy duty, heat-treated clutch springs. Barnett manufactures the kits in-house in the United States.

The Stinger is engineered to install easily and fit precisely with no modifications required. Barnett offers the Stinger in four different finish options: red, gold, black and a gray-toned raw option for customizing.

Barnett continues to focus on precision manufacturing and clutch components designed for real-world riding applications. ■

Barnett also offers its complete M8 clutch kit, a direct-fit premium upgrade for the 2017-2025 Harley Davidson

From Racetrack to Rally Competition-Grade Oil for V-Twins

T

here’s a good reason so many motorcycle companies rely on motorsports as a way to develop their products. Racers push their bikes to the absolute limit, which means any product they’re using has to be able to withstand the most challenging conditions imaginable. LIQUI MOLY’s Synth 20W-50 HD is tough enough for the track, which means it’s tough enough for V-Twins on the street, too.

Developed through racing and proven on the street, LIQUI MOLY Synth 20W-50 HD helps protect Harley-Davidson engines while maintaining performance under demanding conditions.

The fully synthetic formula of Synth 20W-50 HD is designed to handle extreme thermal stress while delivering outstanding wear protection. Engineered specifically for Harley-Davidson engines, it not only protects critical components but also helps maintain peak performance under demanding conditions. LIQUI MOLY has a long history of developing its oil and lubricant formulations in a racing environment. Whether it’s road racing or off-road competition, professional racers are out there, pushing engines to perform consistently, lap after lap. The engine’s components are put to the ultimate test, and engine temperatures tend to creep higher. All of that means having a high-quality, reliable oil is a must. When Mad Monkey Motorsports switched to the LIQUI MOLY Synth 20W-50 HD oil, team owner Branon White saw

and the benefit is these are not just products only designed for race teams,” says LIQUI MOLY USA’s Jason Hess. “They are the same products that we put on the shelf for our customers.” In addition to the 20W-50 HD oil, LIQUI MOLY has additional products to support consistent performance in V-Twin engines. Options include 20W-50 mineral oil and 10W-60 synthetic oil, as well as additives for improved performance. A dose of LIQUI MOLY Speed Additive in the gas tank improves fuel atomization for more efficient combustion, engine cleanliness and improved throttle response. Three Zones. One Mission. Engineered for Total Air Management

Klock Werks approaches airflow as a complete system. The FXRP Fairing Kit, Flare Windshield and Flare Hand Guards work together to help reduce fatigue and improve rider comfort.

M

any riders have experienced it, even if they don’t have a name for it. The steady push against your chest. Helmet buffeting at highway speeds. Fatigue that creeps into your shoulders, arms and hands. Wind noise that leaves you feeling drained long before the fuel tank runs dry. For many riders, wind fatigue is simply part of motorcycling. The team at Klock Werks has spent the past two decades proving that it doesn’t have to be. Since introducing the original Flare® Windshield, the company has focused on understanding how air moves around a motorcycle and using that knowledge to create a more comfortable, confidence-inspiring ride. “Twenty years now of exclusive distribution with Drag Specialties and studying air management through our Flare® Windshield line has been incredibly humbling,” says Brian Klock, President and Founder of Klock Werks. “Our loyal customers make all the added effort worth it. We love to see riders smile.” Through testing, innovation, and thousands of miles on the road, the company has developed products that don’t simply block wind, they manage it. Today, that philosophy has evolved into a complete three-zone air management system designed to help riders reduce fatigue, improve comfort, and increase confidence behind the handlebars.

82

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

ZONE ONE: CONTROL THE AIR BEFORE IT REACHES THE RIDER Every airflow solution starts at the front of the motorcycle. For motorcycles that weren’t originally equipped with a fairing, the Klock Werks FXRP Fairing Kit provides the foundation of the system. Inspired by the iconic police pursuit fairing, the FXRP Fairing Kit combines timeless styling with modern engineering to create a frame-mounted solution that directs air around the rider rather than allowing air to collide with the rider. Because the fairing is mounted directly to the frame, it remains stable as the handlebars turn. This setup helps create predictable airflow while maintaining the planted feel that riders expect from a well-sorted motorcycle. Available for Harley-Davidson and Indian applications, the FXRP Fairing Kit gives riders a classic look while creating the first layer of controlled airflow.

ZONE TWO: STABILITY AND STYLE While the fairing begins the process, the windshield refines it. Included with every FXRP Fairing Kit is a Klock Werks Flare Windshield, a product that has become synonymous with air management performance throughout the motorcycle industry.

★ A U G U S T 2 0 2 6 • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Originally developed through real-world testing and refined over years of aerodynamic research, the Flare Windshield has become a popular choice for riders looking to improve comfort without sacrificing style. Because every rider and motorcycle combination is different, Flare Windshields are available in multiple heights, tints, and fitments across a wide range of Harley-Davidson, Indian and metric touring models. For dealers, the Klock Werks Flare Demo Program provides a powerful sales advantage. The program allows customers to test different windshield heights before making a purchase, so dealers can help riders find the right fit while increasing customer confidence and reducing exchanges. When riders experience the difference for themselves, the results speak volumes.

ZONE THREE: FINISH THE JOB Even after airflow has been managed around the motorcycle and over the rider, one area remains exposed: the

hands. Wind, debris, rain, bugs and road spray all take their toll during long days in the saddle. That’s where Flare Hand Guards complete the system. Designed to work alongside Flare Windshields, Flare Hand Guards expand the protected pocket while helping shield hands and controls from the elements. Available for a broad range of Harley-Davidson models, Flare Hand Guards also provide another opportunity for customization. Matching tint options and Klock Werks’ popular Kolor finishes allow riders to coordinate their hand guards with their windshield and overall build theme.

KLOCK WERKS

Its signature hips channel air away from the rider while helping maintain stability at speed through added downforce. Unlike traditional windshields that simply grow taller to block more wind, the Flare Windshield is engineered to actively redirect airflow. At the top edge, Klock Werks’ patented flip pushes airflow upward, creating a cleaner pocket of air behind the windshield. The result is less helmet buffeting, reduced wind noise, a still pocket of air and a more comfortable riding experience.

BETTER AIR MANAGEMENT CREATES BETTER RIDES When riders talk about comfort, airflow is rarely the first thing that comes to mind, yet it affects nearly every aspect of the riding experience. Managing airflow effectively can transform how a motorcycle feels on the road. Rather than developing stand-alone products for isolated problems, Klock Werks has engineered a system that addresses airflow at multiple points around the motorcycle. The FXRP Fairing Kit manages incoming air. The Flare Windshield refines and redirects it. Flare Hand Guards finish the job by protecting the rider’s final point of exposure. ■

Maintenance, Simplified

Application-Specific Oil Change Kits for V-Twins

M

odern V-Twin motorcycles continue to benefit from advances in engine technology, but routine maintenance can still feel complicated for some riders. Maxima Racing Oils aims to simplify one of the most common service tasks with its V-Twin Oil Change Kits, which are available for a wide range of modern V-Twin models. Each kit includes the correct amount of engine oil for the application along with a premium replacement oil filter, helping streamline the oil change process. The complete kit includes engine oil, primary oil, transmission oil and a ProFilter spin-on oil filter with a wrench removal nut. Dealers and customers can choose either a black or chrome filter housing. “Our goal was to make an oil change foolproof without cutting any corners on protection,” says Maxima Racing

Maxima’s V-Twin Oil Change Kits help dealers and riders save time by packaging the correct oils and a premium filter together for a straightforward service solution.

Oils Brand Manager Trevor Reis. “These kits pair our fullsynthetic engine oil and purpose-built drivetrain fluids with a high-quality filter, giving riders everything they need to keep their machine running clean and shifting smooth.” At the heart of the kit is Maxima’s full synthetic, ester-fortified 4-stroke engine oil, which is formulated specifically for V-Twin engines. The synthetic formulation combines surface-active esters with a shear-stable polymer system designed to provide film thickness and viscosity stability across a wide range of operating temperatures. An advanced additive package provides extreme-pressure and anti-wear protection while helping keep engines running clean. The kit also includes Maxima’s mineral-based transmission oil, which is formulated for use in 4-, 5- and 6-speed gearboxes. Designed for Harley-Davidson transmissions and V-Twin models without wet clutches, the formulation

combines mineral base stocks with extreme-pressure and anti-wear additives to help protect internal components and promote smooth shifting. Completing the package is Maxima’s mineral-based primary oil, which is formulated for use in V-Twin transmissions and primary chain cases. Darkly Confident

Gear for Performance V-Twin Riders

The NeoDaytona jacket delivers a timeless black look with modern rider protection, including D3O armor and a durable Ax Laredo synthetic chassis. ICON’s Dark Collection pairs understated styling with modern protection, giving V-Twin riders helmet and apparel options designed for today’s performance-focused riding.

T

here’s something about a rider wearing timeless black gear that exudes confidence. It’s not just a look, it’s a lifestyle. The ICON Dark Collection is designed to give V-Twin riders that kind of classic style and confident look while also providing the features demanded by today’s performance-minded riders. The blacked-out helmets and gear are a very different statement than ICON’s better-known bold graphics and bright colors, but the impact is no less impressive. As ICON Design Manager John Whitaker says, “A lot of V-Twin riders simply prefer gear that complements the motorcycle rather than competes with it. The darker, more understated approach allows the focus to stay on the machine and the ride itself while still delivering the protection, certifications and performance riders expect from ICON.” The helmets in the Dark Collection include the Airflite Dark and Airform Dark, which are both ECE 22.06 certified. Features like fog-free optics and an internal Dropshield further illustrate that blend of protection, certification and performance. For riders who really want to lean into the performance aesthetic, the Ultraflite Carbon and AFP Carbon 4Tress helmets have carbon fiber construction and a shape inspired by racing helmets. With the continued popularity of Performance Baggers and Bagger racing, these helmets are ideally positioned to appeal to that segment. The ICON Dark Collection was carefully curated to suit this growing market. “The collection is built around quality gear, strong value and products that have consistently

86

delivered results on the sales floor,” says Whitaker. “It gives dealers confidence while introducing customers to the broader ICON experience.” That introduction is easier with the ICON Helmet Display Program, which lets riders get a hands-on look at the helmets. It’s one of the ways ICON is helping dealers show off – and sell – the gear. Talk to your Drag rep about how you can take part in the display program. “For us, the Dark Collection isn’t just about serving V-Twin riders, it’s also about supporting V-Twin dealers,” says Whitaker. “The Dark Collection, paired with programs like the new Helmet Display Program, gives dealers a clean and approachable way to begin building the ICON brand story in their stores. From there, riders can discover everything else ICON has to offer.” In addition to the helmets, the Dark Collection also includes a range of gear. The Chamonix Vest and Fallblock Flannel both give V-Twin riders a Cruiser look packaged with ICON protection. Materials like Cordura denim, leather reinforcements and low-profile armor guard against the asphalt without looking like standard protective gear. When it comes to jackets, the Dark Collection includes several jacket styles, with varying materials choices. The NeoDaytona (made from strong, leather-like Ax Laredo), Upstate Canvas and Upstate Mesh jackets are part of the lineup. ■

Engine Components in One Convenient Spot

B

y now, dealers know that the FatBook and OldBook are the places to go looking for engine components. Instead of searching through multiple catalogs, these resources let dealers find everything needed to rebuild a motor in one place. The list of available components is constantly growing, and the latest additions are Drag Specialties cylinders for M8 motors.

These 4.250-inch bore cylinders join a robust lineup of Drag Specialties engine components. The front and rear cylinders include a dowel pin, heat-resistant powder coating and CNC-machined fins. The fins, which are designed to match the second-generation M8 motor style, are highlighted.

CYLINDERS

Firing on All Cylinders

Of course, with Drag Specialties, dealers can always rest assured that there are components available for older bikes, as well. “Since Drag’s beginning, we have continually provided not only replacement motor products, but also a good variety of performance items as well,” says Drag’s Tom Motzko. And that goes for a wide range of model years.

Drag Specialties M8 cylinders are designed with highlighted second-generation-style fins and a heat-resistant finish for dependable engine rebuilds and repairs.

Twin Cam cylinders, in both 3.750-inch and 3.875-inch bore sizes, feature a black powder coat with highlighted fins. These cylinders are an ideal choice for replacing the OEM cylinders. They match the quality of an OEM piece but without the high price tag. Going back even further, customers riding bikes with an XL Evolution motor can get replacement cylinders featuring a ductile cast-iron sleeve in an aluminum casting. The external ribs on the sleeve “lock” it into the aluminum casting so everything stays exactly where it’s supposed to. For riders on even older bikes who need some engine work, dealers only have to take a look at the OldBook to find the right Drag Specialties cylinders and other components. The cylinders for Evo Big Twins are produced with the same cast-iron sleeve and aluminum casting that’s found on the XL Evo version.

Dealers can choose from two bore sizes in the Drag Specialties Twin Cam cylinder lineup, both featuring highlighted fins and durable construction.

Just how far back does Drag Specialties go with its line of cylinder fitments? There’s an option for 1966-1980 Shovelheads, too. The cast-iron cylinder isn’t just an OEM match, it’s an improvement. The Drag Specialties option is able to withstand greater pressure and heat than the stock Shovelhead cylinder. In addition to cylinders, dealers can find a full range of engine components by Drag Specialties to provide quality service for motorcycles both old and new. And, by listing it all within the covers of just one catalog – either the FatBook or OldBook, depending on the model of the bike – finding all the parts needed to repair an engine or even to rebuild it is an easy task. ■

American-Made Solutions for V-Twin Riders

C

reative problem solver. Idea man. American manufacturer. FBI agent.

That last title needs a little clarification. In this case, FBI stands for Fat Baggers, Inc., the Iowa-based motorcycle parts manufacturer focused on creating custom Harley-Davidson components that are easier to install and use.

Owner Gary Chipp, center, works alongside daughter Alexa (left) and son Kamren (right). Together, they continue Fat Baggers’ commitment to American manufacturing and developing practical solutions for V-Twin riders.

Owner Gary Chipp founded Fat Baggers after helping a rider customize a Harley-Davidson with a wider rear tire. The goal wasn’t more horsepower. It was a distinctive look. Chipp built the bike and took it to Daytona Bike Week, where it drew plenty of attention. Fat Baggers, Inc. grew from that project. Growing up around motorcycles at his family’s Iowa dealership, Chipp developed a deep understanding of Harley-Davidsons and a habit of finding ways to improve them. That fat rear tire project came about 20 years ago, and Fat Baggers has continued to innovate ever since. His custom bagger builds have even attracted high-profile customers, including former Lebanon Prime Minister Saad Hariri. The relationship led Chipp to travel to Lebanon to deliver and set up motorcycles in person.

PARTS & ACCESSORIES

The Fat Baggers Approach

Chipp’s hands-on experience building and customizing Harleys helped him spot a common frustration: riders wanted new handlebars that delivered the right look without the installation headaches, leading to the development of Fat Baggers’ EZ Install handlebars. “Everything we sell right now is made to solve a problem. That’s what I like about this work,” says Chipp. “I like the challenges. We’ve installed and wired so many different handlebars over the years; all kinds of brands. I like the idea of a handlebar that doesn’t give you the issues of getting the wires inside, no more fighting the internal routing.”

Rather than a simple welded joint, Fat Baggers’ 90-degree corner is engineered to ease cable routing. Prewired handlebar options further streamline installation.

The two-piece design is the first thing many riders notice about FBI handlebars, but the engineering inside may be even more important. Chipp developed a CNC-machined top corner section that allows cables to route smoothly into place. Rather than simply welding two tubes together at a 90-degree angle, the design focuses on making installation easier. The design also simplifies dealer displays and allows for more efficient shipping. Chipp also solved a problem with the Fat Baggers clutch cable system following Harley’s move to cable-actuation instead of hydraulics. The FBI system positions the cable

adjuster next to the clutch lever for easier adjustments, and replaces plastic parts with metal. The manufacturer’s brake line kits feature a unique extension that puts the bleed port on a one-way valve, allowing owners to bleed the brakes without any vacuum tools. From its Chariton, Iowa headquarters, Fat Baggers continues to develop products for V-Twin riders while working with Drag Specialties and LeMans Corporation to make those products available to dealers nationwide. ■

While there are brake pad fitments for the latest American V-Twins, including both Harley-Davidson and Indian, Drag Specialties also has a wide range of brake pads to suit older V-Twins. Another bonus is that these pads for American bikes are made in the U.S.A.

aramid fiber pads are the perfect pairing with polished or chromed rotors and billet steel rotors. By offering different materials as well as so many fitments, riders get the luxury of choosing exactly what they want and need for their V-Twin. And, because these are Drag Specialties brake pads instead of OEM ones, the price tag isn’t something riders have to worry about. Riders looking to take things one step further in their braking performance can opt for Drag Premium sintered metal brake pads. These pads are designed specifically for

Drag Specialties offers an extensive range of brake pad fitments for Harley-Davidson and Indian models, including OEM-replacement and Premium options that help dealers match the right pad to the right V-Twin.

“Whether it’s a vintage Harley or the latest Indian, finding the right brake pads should be a simple task,” says Drag’s Tom Motzko. “At Drag Specialties, we strive to have a full line of various brake pad materials for pretty much all years of American V-Twin model bikes at a competitive price.” When it’s time to replace the brake pads, riders can choose either standard brake pads in a variety of materials or Drag Premium pads. The standard front and rear pads are the OEM-type replacement for most bikes dating all the way back to the 1970s, providing excellent stopping capability and wear characteristics while also reducing noise and dust. The standard OEM replacement pads come in sintered metal, organic aramid or semi-metallic options. The organic

The sintered metal is more durable than a stock brake pad, and the Drag Premium pad is backed with an advanced ceramic heat shield that guards the caliper piston and brake fluid from heat. The result is more consistent and efficient braking. One of the biggest advantages of a Drag Premium sintered metal brake pad is that there is no brake dust, noise or brake fade. A rider can pull the lever with confidence, knowing the braking feel will be the same, time after time. ■

front fender does more than block rocks and road spray. It contributes to front-end rigidity, helps define a motorcycle’s overall look and provides valuable canvas space for custom paint. Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation offers a range of front fender options designed to suit everything from performance-minded builds to fully customized Baggers.

Constructed from one piece of deep-drawn steel, the Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation Café Front Fender offers aggressive styling, tight tire clearance and a smooth surface ready for paint.

Made in the USA, Bagger Nation’s Real Steel Café Front Fenders are constructed from a single piece of 14-gauge steel with no welds. Their aggressive styling complements modern V-Twin builds while maintaining the durability riders expect from a steel fender. Direct bolton versions are available for 16-inch to 19-inch, and custom 21-inch front wheel applications.

With its lightweight composite build and streamlined shape, the Super-Lite Café Front Fender offers a custom appearance without adding unnecessary front-end weight.

“Our fenders are not rolled, they are stamped, or deep drawn, which is the technical term, from one piece of steel,” says Paul Yaffe. “There are no weld seams, like with spun wheels. This allows for a very nice, tight fit to the tire and makes them truly ready for paint.” Fitments cover a wide range of HarleyDavidson models, including many 2006-13 and 2014-26 FL models, H-D FL Trikes and 2018-26 Softails. All versions arrive in natural steel, ready for prep and paint. Hardware and billet adapters or spacers are included, with chrome, black and satin finish options available depending on application. For customers who prefer the Café styling but want to reduce weight, Bagger Nation also offers Super-Lite Café Front Fenders. Manufactured from lightweight composite material, these direct bolton replacements are 66 percent lighter than their steel counterparts while retaining the same styling cues. Super-Lite Café Front Fenders fit a variety of Touring and Trike applications and arrive in primer finish, ready for final paint preparation. Billet adapters, spacers and mounting hardware are included. Bagger Nation also offers the Super-Lite Sport Front Fender Kit for riders looking for a performance-inspired setup. Designed for 2020-24 FXLRS and FXLRST models with stock 19-inch wheels, the kit includes mounting hardware, a complete mounting system and black powder-coated debris guards.

FRONT FENDERS

Paul Yaffes

Bagger Nation’s Super-Lite Sport Front Fender Kit pairs a race-inspired design with lightweight materials, creating a clean front-end look for performancefocused builds.

When a build calls for additional visual impact, Bagger Nation’s Thicky Front Fenders provide extra coverage and more surface area for custom paint. These fenders feature extended front and rear sections, thicker sidewalls and squared-off ends that create a distinctive profile. Like the Café fenders, Thicky Front Fenders are made from a single piece of 14-gauge steel and arrive pre-drilled with an anti-corrosion finish, ready for paint. Applications include a broad range of FL models, Trikes and Softails with wheel sizes ranging from 16 to 26 inches. A SuperLite composite version is also available for select 2018-24 FXLRS and FXLRST models. ■

Form Meets Function A Brake Rotor Team-Up

T

he cover of the 2026 FatBook features the Kodlin USA Road Glide, and the photo shows the bike at just the right angle to show off the SBS Designed by Kodlin 10-spoke brake rotor. The collaboration between the two brands was inspired by the desire to prove that a part can excel in both form and function. Kodlin USA has built a reputation for designing aftermarket parts with distinct styling and a high-quality fit and finish. SBS Brakes is known for the outstanding performance and reliability of its braking components. It just made sense for the two brands to team up to produce rotors that check all the boxes for style and performance.

The 2026 FatBook cover bike from Kodlin USA showcases the SBS Designed by Kodlin 10-spoke brake rotor, combining custom styling with braking performance for Harley-Davidson Touring applications.

“When Kodlin decided to launch a premium brake rotor program, we wanted a partner with proven braking expertise and manufacturing quality. SBS was the obvious choice,” says Holger Mohr, Co-Founder and President of Kodlin USA. “We designed the rotors to match the Kodlin style and performance expectations, while SBS brings decades of engineering and production experience to ensure [highend] braking performance.” Currently, there are four rotor designs in the line, covering both Harley-Davidson Softail and Touring fitments. In addition to the 10-spoke floating rotors for front and rear applications, there are also fixed front rotors.

The SBS Designed by Kodlin rotor lineup includes fixed and floating designs for Harley-Davidson Softail and Touring models, with stainless steel and EverBlack finish options available.

92

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

“The wide-mount fixed rotor was specifically designed for stock front mag wheels found on Road Glides and Street Glides,” explains Angel Hacker, SBS Aftermarket Sales Manager - North America. “Additionally, like the bike featured on the FatBook cover, the popular 10-spoke floating rotor is designed to fit spoke-wheel and hub-mounted Touring applications.” Both styles of rotor are available in stainless steel or the EverBlack finish. SBS uses this process of applying a black finish that goes beyond what paint or a powder coat can achieve. A thermochemical nitriding process chemically alters the surface of the steel itself. That means the area where the brake pads make contact with the rotor maintain a deep mirrored appearance, similar to black chrome, rather than wearing away. Even as the rotors bed in, they continue to look great. That sort of quality and attention to detail are hallmarks of both Kodlin and SBS. Laser cutting and CNC-machining of each rotor results in the ideal combination of reduced weight as well as beautiful design. Plus, the rotors are engineered for proper heat dissipation, smooth and consistent braking feel and compatibility with highperformance sintered brake pads, like the SBS HS pads. Riders can opt for stock brake pads or upgrade to a set of SBS pads to go along with the upgraded rotors. ■

The Enduring Popularity of Sissy Bars

S

issy bars have become an icon of V-Twin style. They have remained popular for decades, and it’s impossible to think of Easy Rider without picturing that tall sissy bar on the back of Peter Fonda’s Captain America chopper. These days, sissy bars are still a sign of V-Twin style and Drag Specialties has them available for a range of old and new Harley-Davidsons alike. “Sissy bars are a long-time staple product line of Drag Specialties, offering not only a custom appearance but comfort and security for a passenger,” says Drag’s Tom Motzko. “Also available are the many bar pads from our Drag Specialties Seat company.” The fact that sissy bars are about more than simply making a style statement might be one of the keys to their enduring popularity. By providing additional support for a passenger, they’re practical, too.

PARTS & ACCESSORIES

Still Iconic

Drag Specialties sissy bars blend classic V-Twin style with added passenger support. Round and square designs are available for a wide range of Harley-Davidson models.

Drag Specialties offers both square and round sissy bars, plus compatible side plates, available separately, for easy mounting. Riders can choose from a chrome or black finish to match the look of their bike. In addition to the shape and finish, riders can also choose how high they want to go. Square sissy bars are available in a short design, typically 10 inches in height, or a tall design that hovers around 15 inches, give or take a bit depending on the application. The round sissy bars are typically 10 inches tall, though some models reach as high as 13 inches. Each sissy bar is constructed from 9/16 inch solid steel, and getting one installed is easy. No drilling is required, and the hardware needed to bolt the bar in place is included.

Designed for easy installation, Drag Specialties side plates make it simple to add a sissy bar while maintaining a clean, finished appearance.

While a sissy bar can certainly stand on its own as an aesthetic part of a motorcycle, a backrest pad is what makes it functional for a passenger. Drag Specialties offers backrest pads tailored to its square and round bars, and the square fitments are compatible with a lot of HarleyDavidson sissy bars, too. The backrest pads come in a variety of styles, including smooth, smooth with studs on the sides, pillow-style and Double Diamond stitching. While most options are made from an automotive-grade vinyl designed to stand up to the elements, there are also select fitments featuring Drag’s solar-reflective leather. This option helps keep the leather from becoming too hot in the sun. ■

Race-Bred Fuel Flow Built for Street and Strip

F

or nearly six decades, Pingel Enterprise has manufactured precision-machined fuel delivery components for the motorcycle industry. The family-owned company, operated by Wayne and Donna Pingel from a 51,000-square-foot facility in Adams, Wisconsin, has built a strong reputation in the V-Twin aftermarket.

For dealers serving customers with carbureted HarleyDavidson models — from daily riders and weekend cruisers to dedicated drag bikes — Pingel fuel petcocks and rebuild kits remain proven workshop staples. At the center of the lineup is Pingel’s patented Power-Flo fuel valve. Machined from billet aluminum with stainless steel internals and leak-resistant O-ring seals, the Power-Flo is designed to deliver greater fuel flow than a stock HarleyDavidson petcock. Its design uses a single, extra-large inlet for both the main and reserve positions, providing a true quarter-inch inside diameter with no restrictions. For your customers running modified big-inch motors, that kind of unrestricted flow can make the difference between a well-tuned machine and one that’s fuel-starved at wideopen throttle.

Available in multiple configurations and finishes, Pingel’s Power-Flo fuel valves combine precision-machined construction with increased fuel-flow capacity.

Power-Flo valves are available in single-outlet, dual-outlet, and triple-outlet setups, with inlet thread sizes in ¼-inch NPT, 3/8-inch NPT, and 22mm for Harley-Davidson applications. Finish options include chrome-plated brass and polished aluminum, while the Designer Line adds styling choices such as Diamond, Flame, Lightning, Wave and Liberty patterns. All Power-Flo valves for 1975-2006 HarleyDavidson fuel tanks include a 22mm adapter nut, allowing installation with existing hardware. For customers running race fuel or pushing serious performance, Pingel offers the Guzzler fuel valve. Manufactured from aircraft-grade aluminum and hardcoat anodized, the Guzzler is compatible with gasoline, methanol, and nitromethane. Spring-loaded ball detents provide positive on/ off positioning.

Built from aircraft-grade aluminum, Pingel’s Guzzler fuel valve is compatible with gasoline, methanol and nitromethane for demanding applications.

The Pingel rebuild kit is another useful addition for dealership service counters. Each kit includes seals, a fuel filter, small parts and detailed instructions needed to restore a Power-Flo valve. Kits are available with or without the service tool. The version that includes the tool contains enough components to rebuild three valves, making it a practical option for shops servicing multiple customer bikes. Pingel’s roots in motorcycle drag racing run deep. The company has long supported Larry “Spiderman” McBride – the record-holder for the fastest motorcycle pass in drag racing history – and serves as title sponsor of the NHRA Top Fuel Motorcycle Series. That involvement in the sport reflects the brand’s longstanding focus on fuel delivery performance and reliability. ■

Choosing the Right Luggage for the Ride

Nelson-Rigg’s Adventure luggage offers many options.

C

hoosing the right gear for a Harley-Davidson Pan America isn’t as simple as picking up some Adventure luggage. The gear needs to match the rider’s preferences, including how much storage space is needed and what kind of riding is on the horizon. Nelson-Rigg has two ADV options, including the Hurricane and Trails End collections. The 12 items in the Hurricane line are 100 percent waterproof, making it ideal for riders whose adventures tend to be rainy ones. The gear is always ready for wet weather.

Riders who prefer more traditional black textile luggage will want to choose from the 18 pieces in the Trails End collection. This collection includes waterproof rain covers, or waterproof saddlebag liners, offering protection from the elements while still looking classic. “The two lines function the same, sizing and lifetime warranties are the same: it’s about the rider’s preference for looks, their riding style and the riding environment they will encounter,” explains Nelson-Rigg’s Deb Drinan.

Both luggage collections include tank and tail bags, saddlebags and crash bar bags. The Hurricane waterproof line also offers three sizes of duffle gear bags and a backpack/tailbag. Nelson-Rigg’s lifetime warranty on all textile luggage includes no fade or color-change because it is made with their proprietary Ultramax material. ■

iding a V-Twin isn’t just a casual cruise. It’s moving and stopping more than a quarter-ton of weight around, and brake rotors need to be prepared for it. OEM components can often lead to a fading feeling during long descents, city heat or stopand-go traffic, but GBrakes’ V-Twin brake rotors are built for that kind of abuse. From floating to fixed rotors, the key to strength and consistency is in the construction and material treatment. Each GBrakes rotor is laser-cut from 420-grade stainless

A Diagnostic Tool Update for Tire Maintenance

O

ne of the benefits of having a Moto Pro, Moto Mini American or Moto Mini Pro diagnostic tool on hand is that CanDo International regularly updates the software with new models and functions. Now, with the version 33.18 software update for Harley-Davidsons, Harley service shops have a number of new diagnostic functions at their fingertips, and one of them is something that a lot of dealers have been requesting. The new tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) configuration and manual sensor assignment capability saves time and expense.

without scheduling an expensive dealership appointment,” explains CanDo’s Victor Rivilla. Tire failures add up to thousands of motorcycle crashes annually, so having a properly functioning TPMS sensor is a must. By monitoring the tires’ air pressure and temperature, and sending warnings when needed, crashing or something as simple as being stranded on the side of the road can be avoided. Using one of CanDo’s diagnostic tools to access the TPMS is easy, but it can make a big difference for the rider and dealer alike. or dealers with customers looking to upgrade the braking performance on their Big Twin, EBC Brakes offers a range of fully floating rotor kits and oversize front brake rotor kits designed as direct replacements for the factory-fitted units. “Upgrading to EBC’s fully floating and oversize rotor kits gives riders improved modulation, increased braking confidence, and a more aggressive look, all while reducing the likelihood of rotor warping under heavy use,” says EBC’s Joshua Russell

15-inch oversize rotor kits, complete with caliper relocation brackets, delivering improved brake modulation and a more aggressive look.

EBC Brakes’ fully floating and oversize rotor kits help Big Twin riders improve brake modulation and confidence while adding a more aggressive custom appearance.

Front rotors feature a five-button design to reduce weight, while the rear units step up to a 10-button configuration built to handle heavier use and higher performance demands. The kits are available in a variety of hub finishes and in both plain and contoured rotor designs, giving customers plenty of options to match the look and feel of their build.

EBC Brakes recommends pairing new rotors with fresh brake pads to avoid hot spots and potential damage, and advises a 150- to 300-mile break-in period under normal braking conditions. ■
