The 18th edition of Automechanika Dubai

PROMOTION AT AUTOMECHANIKA thanks to cooperation with PAIH After a two year break, Automechanika trade fair in Dubai opened its doors to exhibitors and visitors. Undoubtedly, the event is the biggest automotive industry trade fair in the Middle East and Africa. Our company had the opportunity to present its offer at this year's Automechanika in Dubai for the first time. As a matter of fact, we did not participate in the fair in person. However, we managed to establish cooperation with the Polish Investment & Trade Agency (pl. abbrev. PAIH), so that we could present our company at the stand of this institution.

14-16 December 2021 Recent months have shown that we can also provide our development, implementation and training services remotely. Over the past year, acting together with vehicle manufacturers we have developed and implemented a number of new projects. We also managed to validate and update the previous ones. We promote services in this field during trade fair taking place in Poland and Europe. We are pleased that thanks to PAIH we were able to present our offer at the Dubai trade fair, thus reaching out the market of countries from the Middle East and Africa. World's leading trade fair for the automotive service industry. We would like to thank the Polish Investment & Trade Agency for its assistance and cooperation so far.

PAIH's mission is to support the inflow of direct foreign investments to the country and increase the range and dynamics of the internationalisation of Polish companies. The organisation promotes the Polish economy, strengthens the recognition of Polish brands on international markets, as well as promotes domestic products and services, and Polish technological thought. PAIH Representatives who were present at the trade fair acted as our „ambassadors”, for which we are very grateful. At the Automechanika, through PAIH we promoted services of our Research & Development Department, which are mainly connected with the vehicle electrics and electronics. These include integration of electronic systems in the vehicle, designing of electrical wiring diagrams of vehicles, development of KIBES software, and many others. What is important, we design and launch vehicles, regardless of the distance and global situation.

Assembly of the new ProViu® II 360 surround view system on the first garbage truck

Municipal vehicle ® with PROVIU II generation ®

The new ProViu 360 2nd Generation Surround View System is designed for a wide range of vehicles. The system has proved its worth on public transport buses, coaches, special ® vehicles as well as municipal machines and vehicles. The first generation of ProViu has already found a wide application both on the Polish and European markets. Also the second generation of the system has been expanding its audience since its introduction last year. We wrote about the assembly of the new system on an articulated bus in the ® previous issue of our bulletin. This time, the ProViu II system was used on a municipal vehicle, commonly known as a garbage truck. The installation was commissioned by EWT Automotive Polska Sp. z o.o. Our solution has been installed on a new, twochamber garbage truck, on the MERCEDES BENZ Actros

chassis with a bodywork made by Ekocel - a company that we had the pleasure to work with during previous installations of the first generation ProViu. The above vehicle has powered up the fleet of Przedsiębiorstwo Gospodarki Komunalnej w Opocznie. (Municipal Utilities Company in Opoczno).

Installation, calibration and launch of the ProViu® II system were carried out by our service centre in Mykanów.

Views from the ProVIU® II system

We want to stress that in case of municipal vehicles, the system undoubtedly brings tangible benefits. Waste collection is becoming an increasing challenge for dust carts crews. Typical working conditions for a garbage truck driver are narrow residential roads and the access to waste collection points blocked by parked cars. They also have to face heavy pedestrian traffic in the vicinity of performing manoeuvres, including reversing. These services are carried out every-where, including schools, kindergartens, markets and public institutions. So you need to have eyes in the back of your head. This is where the ProViu® II 360 proves useful. The driver can see the full vehicle surround view on a monitor in the cabin. Thanks to a graphic processor, a system of four cameras provides a clear, weather-independent view of the traffic situation. A bird's eye view of a vehicle allows the driver to assess a distance to an obstacle, plan and execute necessary manoeuvres and keep track of situations and possible threats, thus preventing potential accidents and damages of other vehicles. On the other hand, a view of the surroundings to the rear of the vehicle makes it easy to access arbours and hard-toreach places. We would like to emphasize that the ProViu® II system not only helps to increase driver safety and comfort, but it also offers measurable economic benefits. These include a smaller number of unjustified claims and accusations concerning property damage. A list of benefits also covers more efficient transport in narrow and crowded residential streets, which allows for performing more tasks in the same time and controlling of the performed works. We hope that next users will learn the advantages of the ProViu® II system soon.

New Retro-Fit service in our offer!

Change from combustion to electric vehicle At the end of the year, we introduced to our offer a new service called Retro-Fit. It involves a conversion of a combustion engine vehicle into an electric one. The components present in a traditional vehicle that are strongly linked to the drive system are removed and replaced by an electric powertrain system and other associated components, and an electrochemical energy storage, which may be traction batteries or traction batteries with a hydrogen cell. The service is carried out according to the strictly defined procedures. There are a few dozen steps to be fulfilled one after the other, that finally convert a combustion vehicle into an electric one. Retro-Fit service, step by step, covers the following actions: 1. Gathering information on customer's requirements regarding the vehicle's performance and expected functionality. 2. Creation of the conceptual block diagram of the entire vehicle.

12. Development and commissioning of wiring harnesses. 13. Development of control software for embedded powertrain systems. 14. Creating of the PLC control software for on-board electronics. 15. Installation and designing of the central display masks to visualise key vehicle parameters for the driver. 16. Final evaluation of the project through HIL (Hardware in Loop), an Online test. SIL (Software in Loop). 17. Design of mechanical assembly components for power electronics. 18. Calculation of the heat rejection from the propulsion system.

3. Selection of the powertrain system.

19. Designing of the combined cooling system for the powertrain system.

4. Calculation of the power balance

20. Physical disassembly of combustion vehicle components.

5. Selection of a traction batteries set.

21. Installation of brackets and mounting elements for the new vehicle systems.

6. Selection of other key components of the vehicle. 7. Calculation of the braking system and assessment of the adaptation needs. 8. Selection of accessories: converters, compressors, assistance system. 9. Modification of the vehicle architecture after an evaluation of the design assumptions and analysis of the documentation of individual components. 10. Development of the electrical systems for power electronics management.

22. Bleeding and filling up of the cooling system. 23. Parametrisation of the accelerator pedal. 24. First start-up with drive wheels in the air. 25. Test drive with limited traction parameters. 26. Final parametrisation of the system. 27. Installation of a telematics system. 28. Collection of vehicle data for the purpose of evaluation and any required adjustments of the driving parameters (final parametrisation of the vehicle - Fine Tuning)

11. Development of electrical management systems for 12/24V electronics (depending on the type of vehicle).

OUR SOLUTONS

15

Estimated time for the completion of Retro-Fit service takes from 6 to 9 months. Everything depends on the scope of work, the commitment of vehicle manufacturer, availability of components and the workload of our R&D department with other projects. Nowadays, when delivery time for new vehicles (combustion and electric) is increasing, due to the lack of components for the production, the Retro-fit service is an attractive alternative for customers who wish to have electric vehicles. Moreover, RetroFit service offers customers many tangible benefits, such as the smaller investment made for this service than the purchase of a new electric vehicle.

Before conversion, our engineers make evaluation of used vehicles in terms of the vehicle body possibilities. Typically vehicles scheduled for conversion are no older than a few years and their amortisation period has not yet expired. It is also important to emphasise that customers often convert new vehicles, which in their electric version do not meet customer expectations in terms of performance and functionality. All vehicle users are all more than welcome to take advantage of our new Retro-Fit service.

European AEA Convention in Cologne, November 16-17

The aviation industry is back at AEA Europe Connect After a pandemic hiatus of more than one year, general aviation industry specialists returned to Cologne for the AEA Europe Connect conference. The European AEA Convention is a great opportunity to learn about the latest regulations, and to exchange experiences and knowledge in the field of problem solving or discuss joint projects. Traditionally, the AEA convention cannot miss the presentation of new avionics by leading manufacturers of this equipment. An inseparable element of the conference is also training, both technical and commercial, organized by the above-mentioned producers. Our company has been participating in the European Convention for many years. So we could not miss the conference in Cologne. On the first day, we took part in a presentation organized by our partner, Bendix King. The new Bendix King CEO, Mr. Tom Neumann, presented the current directions of business development, including new products such as the AeroCruze 100 autopilot for Cessna and Piper aircraft and the AeroCorder flight data recorder, as well as topics related to the pandemic situation and the COVID19 impact for the industry.

The AEA Convention in Cologne was an opportunity to present the new products by our partner, the Bendix King company.

a training organized by GENESYS Aerosystems (former S-TEC), which presented new solutions supporting aviation electronics engineers. Among other things, it was discussed a selection and a replacement of certain components of the autopilot system. Mr. Jesse Beard (Field Service Engineer), with his enormous operational experience, pointed out how to quickly and accurately do what is expected of us. Air carriers expect us to quickly service their aircraft. Such trainings, in which we had the pleasure to participate, are extremely helpful for our company. The next meeting of aviation industry experts will be held next year during the AEA Convention in the USA.

The second day of the AEA convention was dedicated to dealer train-ng. For our part, we participated in GENESYS Aerosystems presented, among others, new solutions for servicing the autopilot systems.

Avidyne introduces its all-new

VANTAGE FLIGHT DISPLAY SYSTEM Story by – Dale Smith Source: Avionics News, SEPTEMBER 2021

Avidyne took center stage at AirVenture Oshkosh 2021 to introduce its new, large-format hybrid touchscreen, Vantage FDS retrofit solution for Entegra equipped Cirrus SR22s. Vantage provides versatile display solution including hybrid touch, Synthetic Vision, and full reversionary capability.

4

AVIONICS | PRODUCTS | NEWS

Vantage is Avidyne’s retrofit glass solution for general aviation aircraft, with initial certification in Cirrus aircraft as an update for legacy Entegra displays. Other display sizes and aircraft certifications will follow.

I recall interviewing Avidyne President Dan Schwinn late in 2019. During our chat, he said that as far as the general aviation avionics market was concerned, his company was decidedly in second place. But that was fine with him and would inspire the Avidyne team to “try harder.” “There’s a value distortion because the market leader is not paying close attention to the needs of many owner/operators of smaller GA and larger legacy turbine aircraft,” he said. “We have looked closely at that and found there’s lots of value we can unlock for these operators.” Two examples of the unique values that Avidyne can provide are the recent Federal Aviation Administration Part 25 approvals of its new Atlas multifunction flight management system for turboprops and light jets and the FAA technical standard order for the Helios multifunction FMS for helicopters. Those two units deliver a wealth of exceptional capabilities to the respective airframe types while improving safety and situational awareness to their flight crews.

Avidyne’s big screen ad-Vantage You may think that’s great for turbines and helicopters, but what about the owner/pilots of smaller general aviation piston aircraft? What has Avidyne done for them? Good question.

In late July, Dan Schwinn and the Avidyne team answered that question by introducing its all-new Vantage Flight Display System featuring dual 12.1-inch hybrid touchscreen interface displays. While the company is planning to offer the Vantage FDS as both a forward-fit and retrofit solution for a wide array of general aviation aircraft, the initial FAA certification will be to replace legacy Avidyne Entegra displays in first-generation Cirrus SR22 aircraft. “We had received the greatest level of interest and the most consistent fleet upgrade opportunity from owners of these early Cirrus SR20 and SR22 aircraft,” Schwinn said. “We have nearly 4,000 owners of Entegra-equipped Cirrus’ who want something new in the form of a much more capable and consistent upgrade for their aircraft.” As Schwinn described it, the new Vantage upgrade will be available for those 2003 through 2008 era SR20s and 22s and will include the dual 12.1 inch hybrid touchscreen displays. Those will be coupled to a pair of Avidyne’s current IFD-series GPS navigators and the Avidyne DFC90 digital autopilot. The IFDs and autopilot are not part of the Vantage upgrade but will need to be added separately. If an owner wants to keep their GNS unit or nonAvidyne autopilot, they’ll have to wait a bit longer. Schwinn said that depending on the market, they may add other thirdparty GPS units and autopilots to the FAA approvals sometime

in the future, but that the initial supplemental type certificate will be for Avidyne IFDs and the DFC90 autopilot only. “Many of the early SR22s have already been upgraded with our DFC90 autopilot and IFD-series GPS navigator units,” he added. “Now, with Vantage retrofit, they can have the largest and most capable display upgrade available in all of general aviation – and it’s all designed to work seamlessly together.” Schwinn said that yet another reason to select the Cirrus as the kickoff platform for the Vantage is that the aircraft’s wide instrument panel is relatively close to the pilot, maximizing the functionality of the IFD/CNS stack and touchscreen displays. “That allows us to do things we are unable to do in other applications,” he said. “Plus, with no center-mounted yoke, there is no need to do a massive panel reconfiguration. That will make the early installations much easier.” Schwinn also made it quite clear that introducing the Vantage upgrade in no way impacts Avidyne’s commitment to supporting its Entegra line of avionics. “This is not an end-of life program for the Entegra suite,”he said. “These are still very capable units, and we know a lot of Cirrus owners really like them. Yes, Vantage is a bigger, better, more capable solution, but we know some owners will upgrade now, some will wait,

6

AVIONICS | PRODUCTS | NEWS

and some will not upgrade at all. No matter what an owner decides to do, we are committed to providing updates and full support for these legacy units for a long time yet.”

Third generation’s the charm As you would correctly guess, developing any retrofit solution, even for a simple airplane like an SR20, is not for the faint of heart. But the ebbs and flows of the retrofit market are extremely familiar to the folks at Avidyne. “We’ve been doing retrofits from day one,” Schwinn said. “We have sold thousands of our autopilots, GPSs, IFDs, and MFDs into this segment over the years. We’re well-versed on what it takes to be successful from the product, installation and support perspectives. “I will say that we have put more emphasis on the Vantage hardware platform than any of our previous largescreen products to make it both a great retrofit and forward-fit solution. Vantage is actually the first full application of our new, third-generation hardware architecture. As always is the case with computer-based products, this is a much more capable and powerful processing platform that has the capability to support much more intensive display graphics. “With the capabilities we’ve designed into the platform, this

“AVIDYNE VANTAGE PROVIDES PILOTS WITH AN UNCLUTTERED INTERFACE AND BEAUTIFUL DESIGN WITH POWERFUL CAPABILITIES THAT DRAMATICALLY ENHANCE SITUATIONAL AWARENESS AND MAKE FLYING SAFER AND MORE ENJOYABLE.” DAN SCHWINN, president of Avidyne

will be our processor and architectural platform for the next 15 years or more. This is a huge technical step forward for us and will eventually be used across any product that has a decentsized display.” Speaking of decent-sized displays, Schwinn stressed the fact that Vantage is a textbook example of bigger being better. If you were to compare the Vantage’s new 12.1-inch display with the Entegra’s legacy 10-inch display, you’d find that the Vantage is 40% larger with 64% more pixels. That adds up to a gigantic improvement in overall display size, sharpness and resolution. While size does matter, there are more benefits to Vantage’s big screens than just bigness. “Pilots who are upgrading any type of airplane should be putting their money behind installing panels that have fewer but larger and more capable displays,” Schwinn said. “To be truly useful, big displays have to be as much about a better user interface as they are about size – that’s where we differentiate the Vantage EFDs. “Look at our popular IFDproducts. Pilots really like their functionality and capabilities and have asked when we were going to make something like that in a big-screen product.”

The many Vantage advantages The many Vantage advantages With that goal in mind, Avidyne’s engineers did everything that technology allowed to ensure an owner’s transition from legacy to leading-edge would be as simple as possible. “The amount of training that a current SR20 or SR22 pilot will need to go from the Entegra or our current IFD-units to the new Vantage system is just about nil,” Schwinn said. “If they are transitioning from the Entegra

and a GNS product (when approved), it’s not much harder. Safety and ease-ofuse are para-mount to all of our designs.” At the heart of the system is Avidyne’s hybrid touch technology. All of the system’s functions can be controlled through buttons and knobs or via direct touchscreen functionality. If you have a smartphone, you know how the touchscreen works. Of course, it won’t take more than a flight or two for all of the functionality to become second nature. Like all great technology, if you notice it, it’s not working. That’s when the Vantage’s other advantages come to

the forefront. “If you’re tal-king about underlying capabilities, it’s definitely the system’s revisionary functionality – the Entegra system can’t do what Vantage can, ”Schwinn said. “This completely changes the operational paradigm of the system. Should the PFD fail, the MFD can display all flight and engine information, and the MFD’s stand-alone attitude reference system will provide data for the DFC90 autopilot to continue to work. “Pilots have also requested that the system be able to fly through a primary ARS failure. With the PFD and MFD both having independent ARS units, that will be a capability when you upgrade to the Vantage package.” Schwinn added that Vantage inherits the familiar pageand-tab user interface that first debuted on Avidyne’s popular R9 systems and has been further developed to include the multitouch functionality found in the current IFD-family of products. “Another differentiator for the displays is the unique 3D synthetic vision that is standard with the Vantage upgrade,” he explained. “Our system has both the egocentric, out the window display and the exocentric view, which gives you that view from above and behind the aircraft. That gives the pilot the option to view the situation in the way that’s best for them. That improves safety.” As you’d expect, the Vantage displays are extremely full-featured and provide pilots with a wide assortment of graphical depictions of traffic, terrain, weather, maps, engine information and airport data.Schwinn stressed that any and all of those graphics can be removed from the screen at the pilot’s discretion. “It’s all very simple and logically laid out for easier use in any situation, ” he said. “You can go as far as having the most basic blue over-brown background and a simple compass rose if you want. That’s a display that a lot of instructors like.”

AVIONICS | PRODUCTS | NEWS

7

As for the MFD, Schwinn explained that Vantage supports all the various Cirrus engine information configurations, up to and including having primary engine indications on the PFD and MFD simultaneously. “It’s a simple and purpose-built display on the PFD side, and on the MFD side, there is a lot of flexibility, including having two vertical data blocks running up the left and right sides of the display,” he said. “They give pilots a lot of display flexibility to configure the information in any way they like for a particular situation. “Another new feature that we’ve brought over from current Avidyne products is the ability to do split-screen displays. You can select from a variety of maps, flight plans, terrain, weather, etc. Again, it’s a capability that’s consistent with our current IFD-family of units.”

Insights on the Vantage EFD’s Cirrus installation As mentioned earlier, Avidyne has a lot of experience with the various trials and tribulations related to aftermarket avionics installations. To help ensure that the entire process goes as smoothly as possible for both the aircraft’s owner and Vantage installer, the company is taking a fresh look at its installation instructions and guidelines. “With the Vantage upgrade program for the SR20 and SR22, we are going to provide a lot more support specific for that aircraft type,” Schwinn said. “For example, because of the larger displays, the installation will require a new panel, so we will provide detailed drawings for the avionics shop to fabricate those parts. “While we’ve designed the system to be easy to wire, there are some connectors that will have to be modified, and the installation kit will have precise instructions and diagrams covering those changes. We are also looking at some wiring harness providers to make up kits to further simplify the installation path.” Another advantage avionics shops will have regarding the Vantage EFD’s installation is that Avidyne has designed the system around reusing many of the aircraft’s current components and subsystems. Again, the goal is to save time and money.

Big displays plus a big fleet equals a big opportunity Schwinn explained that while Avidyne works hard to make every aftermarket upgrade product attractive to pilots, with the many advantages the program offers and some 4,000 Entegraequipped Cirrus SR-series aircraft in the market, the Vantage upgrade could be, well, big. “We see this as a fleet wide upgrade for these legacy Cirrus aircraft, so we want to take the extra steps to make it as easy and inexpensive as possible for owners to have installed,” he said. “We also want to make it attractive for our dealers – they are our connection to the customer. “Avidyne has a lot of exceptional dealers, and many of them also specialize in Cirrus aircraft. We have already

8

AVIONICS | PRODUCTS | NEWS

been talking to a number of our more active Cirrus dealers in preparation for the first batch of installations once we get FAA certification. We want to work with them to get the Vantage installation program down to a science. Our goal is the smoothest entry into service that the industry has ever seen.” While that’s certainly noteworthy, Schwinn said that an added benefit to achieving consistency among all of the installations is it will help Avidyne and the dealers provide better long-term support to the owners. “We will be supporting these aircraft for many years to come,” he said. “When someone calls in with an issue, we want to be able to provide a quick solution. Consistency and commonality are key to doing that.”

21st century capabilities at a 20th century price By now, you’re wondering how much does all of the Vantage EFD’s many capabilities and benefits cost? Well, probably less than you’d expect. Right now, Avidyne is quoting a retail price of $25,000 for the dual Vantage EFD units (not including installation). Owners will, however, have to trade in the operating cores from the Cirrus’ Entegra panel. Those who have shopped for a glass upgrade recently know it’s not a bad deal considering all you get with Vantage: dual 12.1-inch displays with hybrid touch, Wi-Fi connectivity to the iPad and other devices, 3D synthetic vision, terrain, obstacle and traffic displays, built-in ARSs – the list goes on. Plus, no doubt it will deliver a significant boost to a Cirrus’ resale value. As mentioned earlier, the only caveat is that if an owner wants to be an early adopter, the aircraft must already be equipped with a pair of Avidyne’s IFD-series GPS/nav/comms and a DFC90 autopilot. Those units are part of the initial FAA STC program. If a Cirrus is not currently equipped with those Avidyne products, owners must add them to the Vantage shopping list. Still, with all the capabilities the package will deliver in terms of reliability, functionality, situational awareness, and safety, it’s still an extremely attractive upgrade path. According to Schwinn, once the Vantage program gains traction, Avidyne will certify variations that will enable the system to be installed with other popular third-party avionics equipment. This is not a one-and-done package by any stretch of the imagination. “Vantage is our total refreshing of Avidyne’s aggressive participation in the big display upgrade business and is our core product architecture going forward for a long time,” Schwinn said. “There’s no question that this system will evolve, and eventually, we will introduce many variants of the displays to better fit the panel form factors of other aircraft types – but, no matter, they will all be big displays. “Big displays are clearly what customers want, so that’s what we’re going to take the lead in providing. People expect us to bring out products that are different than the competition. Vantage is a significant market entry and gives us a platform to keep doing that for a long time.”

Situational awareness in an

EMERGENCY Push-button easy with Garmin's new Smart Glide feature

AVIONICS | PRODUCTS | NEWS

9

A Smart Glide activation approaching the selected airport

There are sayings pilots use on occasion - usually when they find themselves in an emergency situation. One favorite observes, “The only time you have too much fuel is when the aircraft is on fire.” Similarly, the only time you have too little time is when the engine quits - for whatever reason. On such occasions as a fire, landing occupies the pilot's focus, particularly when the pilot is aware of the relatively low melting point of aluminum - and the pilot's heels already confirm the rising temperature. An engine failure, regardless of the terrain below, whether fuel exhaustion or engine selfdestructing, is another situation with a similar sense of urgency. And should the urgency come in the form of a stopped powerplant... well, gravity takes over leaving the pilot with but one choice: where to try to land the stricken bird. Of course, emergencies tend to raise crew members' adrenaline, potentially to the point of clouding the pilot's mental processing and further challenging the aviator's ability to focus on taking the actions necessary to assure the survival of the aircraft's occupants. Flying the airplane is, first and foremost, always the pilot's top job. But emergencies force the pilot - or flight crew to handle other needs, while also trying to inform the controller, avoiding other traffic, controlling the emergency descent, and - don't neglect the most important one: deciding on a spot for the upcoming forced landing. Some pilots spend their entire time aloft on various scans that help the aviator keep track of location, engine health and the flight's progress. For example, many pilots habitually scan the landscape looking for emergency-landing candidates, an exercise particularly practiced by soaring pilots flying sailplanes and hang gliders. They harbor no sense of crisis or emergency in this habit but continue to practice this habit - “just in case.” And it's rare that

10

AVIONICS | PRODUCTS | NEWS

a soaring pilot will land on a piece of Earth unsuitable for their emergency. A longtime friend and veteran hang glider and sailplane pilot offered another piece of sage observation. Whether piloting a sleek composite sailplane or a foot-launched flex-wing hang glider, soaring machines lack the option of pushing a “Go Around” button or engage in a go-around to take a second shot at setting up a safe, everybody walks- away landing. “My students have heard it a thousand times from the sailplane and hang glider pilots: You get one mandatory landing for every free takeoff.” Many pilots practice setting their sights on a spot and flying right to it. Hint: the touchdown spot is right there, unmoving, visibly growing larger through the windscreen. Terrain the aircraft will clear appears to be moving down and under the plane; terrain unreachable in this situation appears to be moving away from view. The knowledgeable pilot knows to shoot for the closer field, lest a change in terrain and/or winds rub the pilot of that option. But today's technology offers a well-designed piece of automation that can ease the pilot's mental load and, with the right accessory, fly the airplane to the pilot's choice of landing fields. Dubbed “Smart Glide” by Garmin, this upgrade literally provides airport options and more at the push of a button.

The urgency ends with a safe touchdown With identifying a reachable landing field the highest priority in an emergency, it sure would help to have a tool to assist the pilot in making that selection. In the event of the loss of engine power in a singleengine airplane, a pilot faces the urgent, workloadintensive job of safely flying the aircraft. Garmin's Smart Glide function available on GTN Xi series navigators with compatible flight displays - provides such assistance.

Smart Glide activated in mountainous terrain

Smart Glide helps the pilot efficiently manage the aircraft while guiding it to an airport in range and, with a compatible autopilot, can even fly the aircraft en route, allowing the pilot to focus on key tasks essential to this emergency operation. Various incarnations of such a tool have been around for a while - a couple of decades, actually - with varying levels of complexity and capabilities. Now Garmin brings us such a tool under the company's expanding Autonomi label. And let's resolve the good news right now: Smart Glide can be added with a software update and an activation button for an array of Garmin products. Operating this tool is as simple as activating Garmin's groundbreaking Autoland system or activating the straightand-level function built into autopilots from Garmin and several other avionics makers. Much like its more-powerful Autonomi kin, it's push-button simple. Unlike Autoland, however, Smart Glide won't make radio calls, deploy landing gear or flaps, or handle throttle setting. But it will significantly ease the pilot's workload and, hopefully, stress level in what's a highly stressful situation. Let's take a look.

Descent Mode and, the most groundbreaking of them all, Garmin Autoland. Smart Glide builds on those features with an optional feature that gives the pilot the information most needed in the event of an engine failure - regardless of the cause. For aircraft already equipped with a compatible flight display, GPS navigator or a compatible autopilot, benefiting from Smart Glide requires nothing more than the push of a panelmounted button - similar to the activation process to activate Autoland. After an engine failure, the pilot activates Smart Glide mode with the press of that dedicated panel-mounted button, or, alternatively, through the GTN Xi navigator or via the compatible flight display. A dedicated discrete switch is not required. If there is no discrete switch installed, the pilot may activate Smart Glide using the direct-to button on the GTN Xi. Once activated, the software brain of the GPS navigator calculates the aircraft's estimated glide range, taking into account the terrain and obstacles. The glide guidance may be a perfect circle where terrain is relatively flat and uniform.

The underlying philosophy

Where terrain elevation varies, the guide ring will present as an irregular circle and the system helpfully recommends a suitable airport for landing and offers a list of alternatives.

Garmin stressed that the company is “dedicated to the passionate pursuit of active, safety-enhancing technologies that make flying easier and provide advanced capabilities designed to help make flying safer.” It's a bold vision that grows directly from the company's legacy of innovation and leadership in aviation. That tradition continues with Autonomi, Garmin's family of solutions that add automated, safetyenhancing tools for the pilot and passengers.

When activated, Smart Glide creates a direct-to route to an airport within glide range. Next, Smart Glide automatically switches the CDI to GPS mode, engages the Garmin autopilot in Indicated Airspeed mode - and at the aircraft's best glide speed - as it also activates flight director command bars on the compatible flight display. With compatible third-party autopilots, the pilot can activate the appropriate autopilot modes to receive lateral GPS guidance.

Autonomi began as a feature of Garmin flight-control systems specifically the ESP feature, or Electronic Stability Protection. ESP acts to level and restore controlled flight of the aircraft, automatically. Autonomi continued to grow as a defined segment of features with Smart Rudder Bias, Emergency

These helpful steps are just the start; there is more help coming from Smart Glide. In addition to activating the Garmin autopilot, the Smart Glide system automatically loads the selected airport's CTAF frequency in the primary comm standby position, and it offers a shortcut for loading the 7700

squawk code into compatible transponders. Thus, the pilot can focus more attention on checklists, communication and calming passengers.

ILS and more. For aircraft already equipped with a Garmin GTN series box, upgrading to the Xi is as easy as removing the existing unit with a slide-in upgrade to the new GTN 750Xi.

The system's display of that glide range ring also provides destination airport information, including bearing and distance, runway orientation, elevation and winds (if available). Aural alerts advise the distance and bearing to the airport - as well as when the pilot should begin maneuvering for landing.

Just as the GTNs made easier work of updating databases, the GTN 750Xi continues the option of wireless updates of the databases with Garmin's optional Flight Stream 510 Connext wireless gateway link. That same hardware also supports wireless loading of flight plans, continuing Garmin's support of user-friendly features. For example, the Connext system supports optional technology to stream information between GTN Xi and compatible Garmin portables or mobile devices running the Garmin Pilot or FltPlan Go applications.

Once the aircraft nears the airport traffic area, the pilot resumes control and prepares the aircraft for arrival - bleeding off excess altitude and airspeed, setting landing gear and flaps appropriate to the situation. All that's left is for the pilot to fly the final approach to the selected runway and land the aircraft. Emergency over and, ideally, with nothing bent or broken. No ambulance rides; everybody walks away.

Smart Glide's helpers come in various forms Compared to the original GNS 530, Garmin's GTN 750 Xi all-inon navigator, communicator and multifunction display delivers its goods via a display with more pixels on its screen, more processing power from its computer, greater processing speed and performance. Garmin's GTN 750Xi system brings exciting new growth capabilities to the industry's premier GPS/nav/comm/MFD platform. First up, its display: It's the biggest out there in an all-in-one piece of avionics kit. Pilots can view their entire flight plan, including holds and approaches, on a big 6.9-inch touchcontrol display measuring 834 pixels wide by 986 pixels high. Just like airplanes, computer processing is measured as a speed, and faster is better. Garmin outfitted the GTN 750Xi with new high-speed processors that cut boot-up time by 50% over earlier GTN models. This faster speed supports the GPS functions with position updates every 0.2 seconds. With that big display screen, pilots enjoy the option to fly any approach they want, guided by visual glidepaths to LPV, RNAV,

It's hard to imagine a feature more useful in an emergency than aural warnings about wire-strike hazards and powerline alerting. Optional HTAWS provides GTN Xi with audible alerting and five-color map shading to highlight nearby terrain, obstacles and wires - with voice callouts on descent below 500 feet. And given the need to land where there are no airports or helipads, terrain and obstacle clearance is a life-critical issue. Garmin equipped the GTN Xi to be paired with a GRA Radar Altimeter so the electronic partnership can be used to track terrain clearance, displaying precise above-ground-level altitude with HTAWS alerting down to 50 feet. Finally, imagine an engine-out emergency with a nav/comm you can order around - right, with spoken words. Push a yokemounted button and tell the radio what you need it to tune. Garmin's available Telligence voice control technology helps reduce pilot workload by responding to hundreds of spoken commands with the press of a button on the yoke. And the Smart Glide system works with an extensive list of Garmin displays, including the diminutive G5, the G500 and G500 TXi, G600 and G600 TXi, GI 275, G3 Touch - for both experimental and certificated installations - and others. Remember, though, that these displays require a GTN Xi to get the full features available from Smart Glide.

Garmin Expands GFC 500 Portfolio Will Now Include Select Light Twin Engine Aircraft Garmin is proud to announce that it has added the first light twin aircraft, the PA-30/39 Twin Comanche, to the expanding list of aircraft in flight test development for the GFC™ 500 autopilot. Intended for light piston aircraft, the GFC 500 delivers superior in-flight characteristics, self-monitoring capabilities and minimal maintenance requirements when compared to older generation autopilot systems. As Garmin continues to roll out GFC 500 autopilot supplemental type certification (STC) approvals at an increasing rate, spanning more than 200 aircraft models to date, the PA-30/39 Twin Comanche marks the first light twin aircraft currently in the certification process. The GFC 500 autopilot in light twin aircraft will require Garmin's GI 275 electronic flight instrument to provide ADAHRS information to the system. Integration with G500 TXi flight displays will also be supported when integrated with the GI 275 standby attitude indicator. The autopilot mode controller contains large dedicated keys and knobs, a control wheel that allows for easy adjustment to aircraft pitch, airspeed and vertical speed, and a Level Mode (LVL) that returns the aircraft to straight-and-level flight with the push of a dedicated button. The full-featured GFC 500 autopilot provides a long list of existing general aviation aircraft with a simple, lightweight, cost-effective autopilot upgrade path. Incorporating solid state attitude with robust self-monitoring capabilities, the GFC 500 provides superior autopilot performance, greater reliability, and invaluable tools that are similar to those featured on the popular GFC 700 autopilot. In addition to traditional

autopilot capabilities, such as altitude hold, vertical speed and heading modes, the GFC 500 also includes altitude preselect, VNAV (if equipped with a GTN or GTN Xi), underspeed and overspeed protection and more. Pilots can also select, couple and fly various instrument approaches, including GPS, ILS, VOR, LOC and back course approaches when paired with a compatible Garmin GPS navigator. As a standard feature of the GFC 500, pilots receive Garmin Electronic Stability and Protection (ESP™), which works to assist the pilot in maintaining the aircraft in a stable flight condition. ESP functions independently of the autopilot and works in the background while the pilot is hand-flying the aircraft to help avoid inadvertent flight attitudes or bank angles by nudging the pilot to return the aircraft back to an appropriate flight attitude. As Garmin continues to add additional aircraft models to the growing STC list for the GFC 500 autopilot, other light twin aircraft at or under 4750 lbs. maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) are also being considered. To view the most up-to date aircraft STC list, to view certifications that are expected to being in the next 12 months, or if a customer would like to express interest in a specific aircraft make/model, visit www.garmin.com/GFC500.

displays, pilots can also benefit from display backup capability to help prevent the loss of PFD or EIS information during a single-display failure. Dynamic gauge limits and indications All TXi EIS gauge indications display real-time turbine engine information using distinct colors, bands and radials to clearly depict normal operating ranges as well as limitations so pilots can more easily interpret engine data at-a-glance. Select turboprop gauges such as engine torque, prop RPM (NP), gas generator RPM (NG), and engine temperature (ITT) can be configured to change their markings based on pressure altitude, outside air temperature, smart sequence and more. These dynamic indications are configured during installation so pilots can more easily operate the engine within its limitations during changing flight conditions. Additional standard gauges include oil pressure and temperature, as well as fuel flow, fuel quantity and electrical system status. Limit timers and exceedance recordings Utilizing gauge limit timers, TXi EIS helps pilots maintain the engine within its allowed limits to avoid engine exceedances and as a result, costly maintenance procedures. For example,

once a preconfigured limit is reached, a countdown timer is displayed alongside the engine gauge. This timer is an indication to the pilot that they need to mitigate the exceedance. If the time-based limit is exceeded, the timer and gauge begin to flash and the pilot receives a notification that an exceedance has been recorded. Simultaneously, the TXi EIS system automatically logs a variety of information, including the parameter that was exceeded, duration, highest value that was recorded, time, date and more. The pilot can then review the exceedance and share it with maintenance professionals for post-flight analysis. Wireless flight data logging To assist with tracking maintenance activities, controlling operating costs and analyzing overall engine health, built-in engine data logging is included with TXi EIS. Aircraft performance, engine data and any exceedances that are recorded during a flight are automatically stored on an SD card (sold separately) in the display. When the TXi EIS display is paired with the Flight Stream 510 wireless gateway, information is wirelessly transferred and stored within the Garmin Pilot™ app and automatically uploaded to the

flyGarmin® website. Engine and flight cycles are also recorded to help identify aircraft systems that depend on those limits, such as pressurization systems and other life-limited parts. Add precision to fuel planning Pilots can more precisely monitor fuel calculations with TXi EIS, which includes an integrated fuel computer. After making a fuel stop, pilots can enter the fuel data within TXi EIS by selecting "full fuel" or by adding a specified amount in pounds, gallons, liters or kilograms. When airborne, the system monitors fuel flow and GPS information to estimate fuel range, endurance and how much fuel is expected to be available at the destination airport. Certification of the TXi EIS for select Pilatus PC-12/45 and PC-12/47 aircraft with Pratt & Whitney PT667B and PT6-67P engine support is expected to be available in the first half of 2022. The certification is in process and specific aircraft compatibility may change. Additionally, the GFC 600 has been certified for select PC-12/45 aircraft, with certification for select PC-12/47 aircraft expected in the coming months. Shipset and pricing information will be made available as the certification process nears completion.

My name is Zosia, I was born in the 33rd week of pregnancy, on the 3rd day of my life I got aspiration pneumonia. During the examination, my aunt in a specialist hospital did not find a thymus in my body. The thymus is responsible for the immune system and is extremely important at the beginning of my life. Genetic testing has shown that I have 22q11 microdeletions otherwise known as DiGeorge syndrome. Everyday life requires a lot of work, effort and frequent rehabilitation treatments from me and my loved ones, but I am very brave, my Mommy says. I know that all of this, including the medical equipment, costs a lot, although Dad tells me not to worry.
