Ladies and Gentlemen ! Dear Readers!
The pandemic made us face some constraints and thus some challenges. One of them was remote cooperation between our Research & Development Department and vehicle manufacturers. In this difficult time, together with vehicle manufacturers, we have prepared and implemented a number of new projects, as well as we have managed to validate and update the previous ones. In just a few months, we have remotely developed and implemented software solutions, based on wide KIBES5 capability, for a Turkish vehicle manufacturer – Karsan. The team of Karsan engineers was also remotely trained. You can read about the project and our cooperation on page 14. In this issue you can find also information about the new products on the market, such as Oyster MiX Telematics - a system for vehicle tracking, WUS AAS – 4.0. turning assistant or MVC 7 Continental display. 3rd Congress of Organizers and Operators of Public Transport 24 June
ABOUT THE FUTURE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT As a member of the Chamber of Commerce for Urban Transport (pl. IGKM), we participated in the next Congress on public transport in our country. We would like to point out that it was a long-awaited, first stationary event organized by the Chamber since the lockdown announcement. The Congress, which took place in Warsaw met with a great response from the members of the Chamber. From obvious reasons, much attention has been paid to the functioning of public transport in times of pandemic and thereby ensuring the safety of passenger transport, as well as the safety of drivers and all public transport employees. A year with coronavirus showed us, that public transport companies have rapidly responded to the epidemic situation. Almost all of them have incorporated safety procedures to protect their employees, drivers and passengers, including new standards for vehicle cleaning and disinfecting, organised buffer zones for drivers and much more. It is safe to say that public transport has done well in times of pandemic, and the new sanitation procedures that have been introduced will possibly stay with us forever, to the benefit of all those, who use this means of transport. Participants have also raised the issues of electromobility, as well as the environmental and operational benefits of electric public transport. The Ministry is expected to release the latest update to the electrification programme for the public transport buses in late July/early August.
presented their new solutions in this field. Participants wondered whether the future of public transport will belong to hydrogen zero-emission buses. Discussions and exchange of views continued after the official end of the Congress. After such a long break caused by pandemic, the participants had a lot to say to each other. A nice touch accompanying the June Congress was a gala dinner to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Chamber (pl. IGKM). We would like to congratulate the Chamber on such a beautiful anniversary and wish further success in activities promoting safety and comfort in public transport.
Also hydrogen buses have not been neglected. Leading Polish manufacturers have

Trainings for PKP Intercity
All about KL 20e air conditioners In the course of preparation for the summer season, our Customer – PKP Intercity S.A. has decided on trainings carried out by our company. In May, we conducted four trainings on construction, operation, repair and maintenance of Konvekta KL20E air conditioners, mounted on our Customer's locomotives. Trainings took place at the customer's headquarters in Warsaw, Wrocław, Kraków and Gdynia. The PKP Intercity Board knows that efficient air conditioning and ventilation, both in passenger compartment and locomotive, have a great impact on health, safety and travel comfort. With air conditioners the train drivers can travel long distances in optimal conditions - without the uncomfortable heat or noise generated by open windows. The cooled down and constantly exchanged air inside the locomotive is one of the elements protecting them from invisible but dangerous viruses, which is extremely important in the current situation. An efficient air-conditioning system is necessary to ensure such conditions for the locomotive staff. In our wide offer manufacturers and users can find Konvekta air conditioning units of KL20E, HVAC 2101, HVAC 3405 and HVAC 3407 series. Selection of the appropriate air conditioner depends on the size of the cabin and the type of electrical supply. In case of locomotives in PKP Intercity, the training covered all information on KL20E air conditioner, which is fitted to new, modernised and retrofitted locomotives. We want to stress that this device has a very wide range of applications and is mounted not only on locomotives, but also on buses and special vehicles. KL20E is a roof compact unit integrated with the brushless 24V electric motor. This solution meets train drivers' expectations and ensures comfort in their cabs throughout the year. These air conditioners characterize with a high reliability rate. Moreover, their construction and workmanship ensure many years of exploitation. As they are

factory-filled with R134a refrigerant, they are quick to install and comfortable in use. Trainings performed for PKP Intercity had a form of lectures and practical classes (carried out on a locomotive featured with KL20). The substantive value of trainings was greatly increased by the fact of conducting them in the workshops, in the real working conditions of the PKP Intercity technical staff. Trainees worked in an environment that they are already familiar with and could ask additional questions. All these allowed us to pass the extensive technical knowledge in the accessible and personalized way . The practical training has additionally resolved any doubts. The knowledge we provide comes from the "first-hand
experience", which means that trainees and trainers can be confident that all service standards comply with the manufacturer requirements. This will undoubtedly result in long and failure-free operation of air conditioners and reduction in repair and maintenance costs. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Customer for the already established cooperation and would like to wish PKP Intercity safe and comfortable journeys with Konvekta air conditioning units.

the International Defence Industry Exhibi-tion MSPO in 2018r. Next year, Autobox purchased the remains of Honeker factory from the trustee, and thus all rights to the documentation and production, modernization and repair of these vehicles. The consequence of these actions was creation of their own, first prototype of an offroad vehicle - AH20.44 We are all the more pleased that the new Autobox off-roader is equipped with our solution - FlexCluster, presenting all information necessary to control vehicle functions. Displaying information in a quick and easy-to-read way is particularly important and required in vehicles of special purpose, and such is undoubtedly the new AH 20.44. vehicle.
Thanks to compact design, robust cover and flexible software, FlexCluster is reliable and extremely flexible. With grADI software, it can be programmed to show personalized icons, company logos, bargraphs, and different mask layers. FlexCluster dashboard can be
programmed and configured to comply with customer wishes and needs, and communicable software allows customers to make their own changes. Autobox AH 20.44 was designed for military use, however it will also work perfectly for civil services. The new vehicle is still developed, and the final version for military use is expected to be unveiled at the International Defence Industry Exhibition in Kielce, as early as September. We keep our fingers crossed so that the pandemic will not change our plans this time and everyone will have a chance to get familiar with the work of Starachowice engineers.
NEW! Turning Assistant WUS AAS – 4.0 by WÜLLHORST
We are pleased to inform that our offer now includes a new solution for drivers to make turning manoeuvres safer – the Turning Assistannt WUS AAS – 4.0 by WÜLLHORST.

In one of our latest issues, we wrote about a similar solution, which assists the driver while driving. We presented the new RightViu system by Continental. The system is still available in our offer. However, it should be stressed that the RightViu turning assistant is intended only for trucks, whereas the Wüllhorst system has much broader application. It is dedicated to trucks, agricultural machinery, special vehicles, such as fire engines, sweepers, and above all, to pu-blic transport buses and coaches. Wüllhorst system is based on components of our partner, Continental company, which contributed to establishing mutual cooperation between our company and Wüllhorst. We want to stress that Wüllhorst is a family company with long tradition in the automotive industry. The very fact that it was founded by Karl Wüllhorst in 1880 strongly appeals to the imagination. Currently, the company is run by the fourth generation of the Wüllhorst family. The range of products and services offered by the company is very wide. It is worth to mention about one of the firsts LBW vehicles, lightweight aluminium structures or cargo securing solutions. The company's latest innovations are driver assistance systems, such as the already mentioned turning assistant WUE AAS – 4.0. The system allows the drivers to reliably differentiate between static and dynamic objects, and immediately recognise them. The new system supports drivers when turning by providing a reliable warning signal indicating cyclists and pedestrians. The entire blind spot, opposite to the steering wheel side, is visible for a driver on a screen (left-hand and right -hand traffic versions are available). As the system complies with the UNECE 151 EU directive, the detection area has been further extended. It allows for safe detection of cyclists

while crossing the road. Moreover, the system is not permanently active, but it activates after pressing the right turn indicator or while making a turn. As AAS-4.0 is equipped with a camera and a separate AHD monitor, the driver gets a clear picture of the hazardous situation. The viewing area of the camera overlaps with the detection field of the sensor, so that, whenever there is a warning, the driver can locate the obstacle and react to it. The system can also make the side-marker lights to flash when turning. This function will make the turning process considerably safer, since “weaker” road users will be made aware of the upcoming turn sooner. Application of Wüllhorst solution considerably reduces the psychological stress of the driver in traffic, which helps avoid driving errors.
System components ! Radar with camera A radar sensor with special software from Continental is placed in a housing together with an AHD camera. This minimises the installation effort, and the components are always perfectly aligned with each other. ll components are pre-assembled in the kit. In the WUE AAS-4.0-Side version the camera monitoring system (KMS) is installed independently of the radar (optionally it can be integrated).
! Screen The monitor is always placed in the driver's field of vision. Due to the position of the camera and the monitor, the blind spot is shown in the same perspective that the mirror also displays. This makes orientation very easy for the driver.
! ECU The third system component is the control unit, in which everything comes together. The side-marker lights can also be connected here so that they also flash when indicating.
Application in vehicles The WUE AAS – 4.0 turning assistant can be adapted to different vehicle specifications. Importantly, all possibilities are covered by one system – whether the steering wheel is placed on the left or right side, or whether we are talking about small vans, large trucks or vehicle combinations with a trailer detection function that automatically expands the warning field. 1. City buses and Coaches WUE AAS – 4.0 assistant can be easily installed on public transport buses. In comparison with RightViu (that is mounted underneath the mirror and in case of public transport buses, may endanger the health of pedestrians) the mounting position is fully safe to the environment, and the radar sensor is installed on the side.
3. Trucks With many years of experience in vehicle construction Wüllhorst has reviewed and tested the perfect mounting scenario for retrofitting the vehicle with turning assistants and its implementation into series production. In addition, cooperation in this area with Continental, a manufacturer of RightViu system offers proven hardware and specialist knowledge on the software.
4. Agricultural machinery When it comes to agricultural machinery, there is a solution covering both sides of a tractor or other agricultural machine. Since the steering wheel in such vehicles is usually placed in the centre, a blind spot occurs on both sides, next to the rear wheels. There can be one sensor system on each side. Both of them can be operated via one control unit.
2. Special vehicles As the sensor always has the same mounting position and a defined monitoring area, the system can be used in all types of vehicles of municipal services, including very short ones.
! Detection only for pedestrians and cyclists. ! ! !
ADVANTAGES OF THE WÜLLHORST AAS – 4.0 ! Automatically expanded warning “weaker” road users, such as
Detection of double-parked vehicles. Detection in the front area behind the A-pillar.
Thanks to the camera monitor system, the driver not only receives warning, but can also get an idea of hazardous situations and react to it.

MultiViu Compact 7 Continental
A modern display for agricultural vehicles For drivers or operators of any vehicles it is very important to have the information displayed in a quick, clear and transparent way. This has a big influence on the safe and stress-free driving, as well as on the work comfort, especially in difficult outdoor conditions. Such conditions undoubtedly prevail in the agricultural sector. As operators of agricultural machines often spend many hours in the hot sun, it is essential for them to have access to all necessary vehicle data without any problems. MultiViu Compact 7, Continental's new compact solution, meets such expectations. Flexible and high-quality MultiViu Compact 7 primary instrumentation offers more efficiency and operating convenience while driving and operating the agricultural machinery. Twenty-four indicators offer much more space for important information concerning the vehicle. The display presents all the customer defined information, including speed, RPM and filling level. With MultiViu Compact 7 vehicle manufacturers can display large amount of information for a driver in a correct and comprehensible way. MultiViu Compact 7 has caught the attention of Linder, an Austrian company specializing in off-road special vehicles for the agricultural sector. For the cabin of the new Lintrac 130 tractor, engineers from Lindner were searching for a display enabling control of TracLink Smart functions and driving strategies. They also set a number of other conditions. “Operation had to be easy to understand and help users – whether young farmers or experienced profes-

sionals – to react correctly even in stressful or dangerous situations,” explains Manuel Lindner. Mr. Lindner also noted that it would be ideal if there can be two control options, either via the display itself or via the remote control in the arm rest. It was necessary to provide enough display options for many different operating situations that occur when working in fields or meadows – starting from working with mowers, hay turning machines or hay rakes and ending with baling presses. Tough working conditions in the agriculture sector mean that the machine must have a solid construction. It is equally important that even in strong sunlight, the driver must be able to easily read all the data. That is why the specs also insisted on a particularly bright display. The appearance of the device played an equally important role in the decision making process.

Klejenie optyczne zapewnia czytelność wyświetlacza, Compact 7 can be used as an instrument cluster or a se“A harmonious interior concept is becoming ever more important,” explains Marketing Manager David Lindner. As a result, the display had to fit harmoniously in the cab. In the end, Linder has chosen MultiViu Compact 7 (MVC 7) from Continental – a primary instrumentation with a large 7-inch display and optional touchscreen to present vehicle-related information to the driver. This can act as a second device for menu navigation or – as in Lindner's case – as a compact alternative to the instrument cluster. “The touchscreen display looks a bit like a modern smartphone. As a result, drivers don't need a long familiarization phase but intuitively get used to the device straight away – just as we wanted,” says David Lindner. Consequently, they can concentrate fully on their work and complete it more efficiently. In this way, the family-owned company is also able to meet the growing requirements in terms of comfort in the driver's cab. Since the MVC 7 is freely programmable and has CAN connectors, Lindner was able to configure it for use in various grassland management scenarios just as the designers wanted. The so-called “telltales” were particularly useful here. The display is available with up to 24 illuminated side symbols, which provide a lot of space for information. They are also freely configurable and in the Lintrac 130, they provide the driver, among others, with information about the lighting system or the state of the braking equipment. Lindner has implemented the device recognition capability of the TracLink Smart System via one of the two CAN connectors.

Workmanship of the device is also significant. The MVC 7 is made of real glass, which makes it especially scratch-resistant. Water and vibrations also have no effect on it. “Just perfect for the really tough conditions in which our tractors have to work,” is how David Lindner sums things up. The fact that the MVC 7's glass front and display are bonded reduces reflections. This means that the display remains easy to read even in poor lighting conditions. At 1000:1, the contrast level is also very high. The MVC 7 with its black-panel design makes a great visual impression. When switched off, it displays a uniform black surface and fits well in the cab. “With this solution, we bring outstanding quality from the automotive sector into a tractor with continuously variable transmission.” said Manuel Lindner. Production of the Lintrac 130 tractors with MVC 7 Continental started at the beginning of 2020.

Oyster Wireless Tracker by MiX Telematics – system for active tracking and location of vehicles, wagons and boats
NEW!
Safety and peace of mind thanks to OYSTER system This summer, we have extended our offer with the new MiX Telematics system called the Oyster. The system allows for tracking and location of vehicles, wagons, containers, boats, as well as the increasingly popular campers. The device is small and thanks to the application of advanced technology impossible to detect by means of typical scanners and similar devices. Small dimensions and "silent operation" allow to track the location of a vehicle equipped with such a transmitter, in the way unnoticed to the average user. The system allows for a quick location of the stolen vehicle, container or camper and in special cases after changing the parameters it allows for continuous tracking.
12
PRODUCT NEWS
This is particularly important when searching for a stolen property, and makes the work of the police and relevant services much easier. In such situations, Web programming allows for location with an accuracy of a few metres. In the standard mode the device sends 1 heartbeat message per day, which ensures uninterrupted operation of a single internal battery set for up to three years.
frequency of location report is every 12 hours. Device characteristics: - no external antennas, - compact design, white housing, - no additional power supply cables – the system is completely autonomous, - IP67 class resistance i.e. complete dust and water-resistant (maximum depth of 1 meter up to 30 minutes), - easy battery installation and replacement – authorized service is not required, so the user will not entail any additional costs - operation for up to 3 years without servicing or other intervention, - EU data transmission included in the subscription price.
The housing has the IP67 class of resistance to external conditions. Thus, the system can be installed in hard-to-reach places. An invisible system safely keeps an eye on our property. As the electricity is supplied by three AAA batteries, the system does not require any additional power supply. Such solution allows for the off-site service, because the battery replacing is very easy and the installation does not require qualified specialist - it is so uncomplicated that any driver or owner can do it. It only takes is a few screws. As the contact with service is unnecessary, the total cost of a system is further decreased. As in the standard mode the device sends 1 heartbeat message per day, the system is practically undetectable for potential criminals. Customers can track their assets on an interactive map, replay historical trips and use the Trip and Utilisation Timeline and Certificate and License Reminders.
We notice that nowadays campers are becoming more and more popular as a safe and comfortable way of spending holidays. Taking into account the costs of basic vehicle and increasingly sophisticated equipment (from the shower, through the air conditioning and heating units, to the advanced audio and video systems), such camper undoubtedly has a big value. Thus, it is reasonable to protect it, which is guaranteed by the Oyster system. It offers safety and a peace of mind for all individual owners, rentals and everyone who cares about their own property. The system is dedicated to the owners of:

Sign of the times - remote training and programming work with Turkish vehicle manufacturer - KARSAN
JOINT PROJECT WITH KARSAN COMPANY successfully completed Nearly two years ago, at the International Bus Exhibition "Busworld" in Brussels, we established our first contact with the Turkish company Karsan - a manufacturer of a wide range of commercial vehicles. The outbreak of the pandemic, against all fears, did not stop our cooperation, on the contrary - it took it to a completely new, previously unknown path. The impossibility of personal meetings due to the introduced lockdown forced our companies to take up new challenges and new forms of cooperation. Such a challenge was the remote development and implementation of programming solutions based on the wide capabilities of KIBES 5 and comprehensive training of a team of engineers from the Karsan company - and what we want to emphasize, we managed to achieve it in just few months.

We asked Mr. Nurettin Özekmekci – manager and administrator of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at Karsan about how the mutual cooperation was established, as well as about the company's functioning in the pandemic era. DN: What challenges has Karsan faced in connection with this project by the pandemic? NÖ: Working during the coronavirus pandemic was a great challenge for us. At the beginning of the pandemic, Turkey applied a long-term lockdown, and the precautionary measures have changed over time. Employees who could work remotely, worked from their home, and we provided social distance, of course supported by decontamination of the areas periodically. The most serious problems we encountered during homeoffice working period was the necessity to work on vehicle prototypes. At one stage of the project, I even had to take one vehicle prototype to my home garage, in order to continue working. DN: How would you rate the cooperation with Drabpol in these unusual conditions? NÖ: Karsan and Drabpol have created a communication environment together. We quickly determined the method of cooperation and mutual obligations, and then we started working. At this stage, Drabpol's tips were very important, and the team assigned to us turned out to be very helpful and willing to cooperate. In such an environment, cooperation was
16
OUR REALIZATIONS
very healthy, even in conditions caused by COVID. DN: Does the current market situation have a negative impact on the company? NÖ: The impact of COVID-19 on the market is obvious, but the growing trend of electric utility vehicles is optimistic. Many investments have been postponed due to the uncertain economic situation, this also applies to the city bus market. However, we have high expectations for 2022 and see many opportunities in the near future. DN: What is your opinion on the Research and Development Department (R&D) of Drabpol? NÖ: Drabpol has extensive experience in research and development, especially for the automotive sector. Drabpol's engineers successfully used their experience in developing the software they are responsible for in the Karsan project. The involvement in the project on the part of the Drabpol team was on an amazing level. We could always count on their support. DN: What are your prospects for further cooperation? NÖ: Karsan is a continuously developing company with high demands in a fast pace. Our determination also carries our suppliers further with new challenges. Cooperation with Drabpol can play a key role in the journey which we are just embarking on, and thanks to comprehensive preparation by the R&D team, we can focus on partial independence. DN: Thank you for the interview.
JOINT PROJECT – How did it look like in practice? To bring our joint project with Karsan company closer to our Readers, we asked a representative of our company, Mr Michał Sitek, to tell us more about it. Mr. Sitek is Head of the R&D Department and Managing Director of Drabpol Headquarters with a wide experience in the field of the implementation of management systems and vehicle logic, HV and LV in public transport vehicles, and industrial solutions. DN: Knowing the conditions that force us to mobile work, could you please tell us about the realities and operations carried out for Karsan? MS: To meet the expectations of its customer, Drabpol did the impossible. We remotely led Karsan R&D department and together we developed the vehicle logic in KIBES5. Most of function modes has been prepared in accordance with the Functional Safety, and we have managed to do that in just a few months. The display has been equipped with an extensive vehicle diagnostics that was based not only on DM1 frames, but also on many proprietary algorithms. From the menu level one can change not only the basic functions, but also a lot of traction settings. DN: How did the remote training for Karsan look like? MS: During the process, our team was training Karsan engineers on the logi.CAD environment and HMI- CGI Studio. In the course of the project, we were able to explain and demonstrate on a "living organism" how the individual function blocks work, based - for example - on an online. TEST that was specially modified for the customer. The program created by the Drabpol team has been very carefully prepared with precise comments, and the entire work has been provided in OpenSource Code, which Karsan engineers will be able to develop, under our supervision, in the next project . Thanks to our involvement, Karsan engineers have gained experience and confidence in topology design on the KIBES5 platform. We have appointed several teams so that project like Karsan can be carried out concurrently. Each task group is responsible for a different area: One team creates topology of low- and high-voltage circuits, creates documentation, advises on the selection of components, designs the harnesses, commissions and supervises the
order, the first assembly and future adaptation of changes depending on customer requirements. The second team is responsible for the central computer and logic based on KIBES5, with keeping the Functional Safety. The third team deals with dashboard project and connection between the logic and HMI environment. It is also responsible for the entire driver's workplace. All these activities are divided into individual work stages related to the entire process of adapting our solutions, having regard to a very precisely planned schedule. As we can perform them at the same time, the full adaptation is shortened to an absolute minimum. DN: Thank you for that comprehensive answer. Can you tell us something more about projects planned in the near future? MS: There are new, large projects, where we provide comprehensive services. Additionally, by designing electrical diagrams and full documentation, we enter the world of electromobility - by designing our own EV Template on the NEURO controller from DANA / TM4, but we will tell you about it soon ... DN: Thank you for the conversation. The joint project with Karsan has shown that regardless of the prevailing global situation, geographical location and many other aspects, the team of our engineers is able to bring every project to the end. Moreover, our team is able to leave behind a well-functioning group of trained employees who can cope with the further demands of the market. You can read more about the projects, capabilities and competences of our R&D engineers on the following pages. We would like to say thank you to Karsan company for fruitful cooperation in the frames of joint project, and we wish further success.

managed to validate and update the previous ones. The range of the R & D Department services was very wide. It covers production, repair, software development, training sessions, consultancy and design services.
At this moment, the main topics of our design projects are vehicle electrics and electronics. Together with factory designers, we create the first software versions for tourist buses, both intercity and city buses. We also develop schematic diagrams for electrical wiring and
Projects covers the following issues : 1. Integration of electronic systems on a vehicle - design of connections between vehicle systems for the correct data exchange and system interactions. 2. Selection of parameters for on-board electronic systems - determination of operating parameters, calculation of current loads, etc. 3. Designing connecting diagrams of vehicle electric installations - creation of a database with numbers of wires, fuses, relays, apparatuses, etc., which are essential for creating diagram and designing of wiring harnesses. 4. Design of wiring harnesses for electrical installations - preparation of construction drawings of wiring harnesses for the whole or part of the vehicle. 5. CAN communication design - analysing communication matrix for the correct data exchange and creating new communication for new systems. 6. Software design of the KIBES system 7. approach to new challenges. We want to stress – challenges that are never a problem, but a database of solutions and ideas for innovative solutions. Each time, before introducing the new product, system or software into the market, we take part in a comprehensive
training, both on the technical and commercial field. And there is no question of savings or compromises. For example, the training course on operation and programming of Dana /TM4 electric motors took place at the manufacturer's headquarters in Canada. Classes were conducted in two groups. Technicians had an opportunity to get familiar with the design
and capabilities of the electric motors. Training participants could also take part in the workshops, where they could practically get familiar with the powertrain programming and parametrisation. The second group, the commercial one, focused on getting familiar with the market, customer expectations as well as the possibilities and limitations of electric motors. For many years, we have been taking part in similar training courses and workshops organised, among others, by Continental company. They are always related with introduction of new solutions and technologies. Such trainings cover all products. Thus, R&D engineers have the most recent theoretical and practical knowledge, acquired under the watchful eye of system manufacturers, which translates later into the creation of new or implementation of ready-made solutions, compliant with the clients' requirements and expectations.

KIBES 5
Key to integrated on-board electronic system
In our previous article, we introduced the services provided by our R&D Department. These include design of the KIBES system software, as well as the system implementation and diagnostics on a vehicle.
with the latter providing a direct connection to several possible instrument cluster solutions.
In this place, we would like to present you KIBES 5, the latest on-board electronics system for vehicles. The KIBES system offers great design flexibility to perform vehicle functions and end-customer requirements, even later – during the vehicle operation. The entire vehicle and its systems are controlled and monitored by distributed electronics and power management, as well as by the connection with vehicle sensors and actuators.
To ensure the compatibility of the following systems, we continue to use MUX multiplexers. The family of MUX5 provides a water protected system with the multiplex node MUX4-Pn for general purposes controlled by the master unit MUX5-Pcu.
The flexible network system of KIBES® allows an easy addition or removal of several components and it also simplifies the maintenance and trouble-shooting of the vehicle. Vehicles can be operated more safely and reliably due to built-in diagnostic features, such as short-circuit protection, open-load, and over-temperature detection. The minimized amount of wirings, connectors, relays and fuses allow for the vehicle weight and installation time to be significantly reduced, as well as the fuel consumption, documentation service and maintenance costs. At the same time, the vehicle reliability can be improved through high quality components that are carefully tested and validated not only on a component basis, but also on system level. The core of the system is the central computer ZR5-A that provides a solution to almost every possible requirement. Up to 18 nodes can be connected to ZR5-A central computer for all types of in- and output signals. It offers comprehensive CAN network connectivity with the vehicle suspension and steering system /body and chassis control system, as well as to other systems, displays and meets the requirements for Human-Machine Interfaces. KIBES32 systems with a control unit of the CBCU3 family provide powerful solutions that are dedicated to trucks and various types of working machines. Up to four nodes can be connected to CBCU3-E via multiplex CAN. Apart from that, control units of the CBCU3 family offer a network of powertrain CAN and instrument CAN,
Up to four MUX4-Pn nodes per multiplex CAN can be connected to MUX5Pcu. The system also provides four generic CANs, as well as the installation outside of the cabin. Part-145 and Part-21 completednather avionic modernizations
Two Cessnas 172 withe the New equipment Despite the still prevailing pandemic situation in our country, this period is a time of hard work for both our Part-145 Service Organization and the Part-21 Design Organization. This time, our specialists received two Cessna 172s: SP-CES (Cessna 172P) and SP-TAM (Cessna 172S).
CESSNA 172P MODERNIZATION The first of these aircraft belongs to the Airport Biernat company, with which we had the pleasure to cooperate for the first time. The four-person Cessna that we undertook to modernize is intended at for training and tourist flights. It is perfect fit for traveling around the country or sightseeing flights.
families, groups of friends, co-workers, etc. It also offers training for the PPL (A) tourist pilot license, both theoretical and practical. The company holds the AMO Technical Maintenance Organization certificate, issued in accordance with the Part-145 regulations, under which it offers its services to all aircraft owners.

(periodic, special, structural), repair and installation of various modifications. With the improvement of the safety of the flights themselves and the pilot's situational awareness, Airport Biernat focused on the modernization of the avionic equipment of the already mentioned Cessna 172 P.
BEFORE MODERNIZATION
The existing pilot instruments were retained during this modernization. Two Bendix King KX 155 radios and GPSMAP 296 navigation receiver were replaced with: Garmin GTN650Xi NAV / COM / GPS system and Garmin GNC 255A NAV / COM radio, respectively. The first system works with the existing
AFTER MODERNIZATION Bendix King KI 525A navigation indicator and the second with the Bendix King KI 204 indicator. Since no pilot or engine instruments were replaced, there was no need to replace the instrument panels. However, we repaired the existing S-TEC System 50 autopilot, which was then coupled to the Garmin GTN 650Xi and finally tested in flight. The works were confirmed with appropriate entries in the aircraft documentation.
CESSNA 172S MODERNIZATION The second Cessna that we have modernized is owned by the PLANE4YOU company, which deals with the comprehensive sale of aircraft - from preparing offers in Polish and English, making a professional photo session, searching for customers, publishing announcements, presenting the aircraft to customers, conducting correspondence with interested parties, preparation of contracts, finalization of transactions until the aircraft is removed from registry and transferred to a new owner. Contrary to the previous one, the Cessna 172 S required more "mechanical" work, because virtually all analog pilot and navigation equipment was removed. Photo by courtesy of the Plane4You.

AVIONICS | OUR REALIZATIONS
The old mechanical flight instruments have been replaced with the Garmin G500TXi integrated flight and navigation system with the GDU 1060 display, the GDC air data unit, installed on the back of the display and the GMU 44 magnetometer. The Bendix King KT 76C transponder, which does not meet the current requirements for devices of this class, was replaced with a modern device Garmin GTX 335, compliant with the latest ADS-B Out standard. Similarly, the outdated Bendix King KX 165 radio and Bendix King KLN 94 GPS receiver, as well as the KMD 550 map display were replaced by the Garmin GTN 650Xi NAV / COM / GPS system.
between them within the entire avionics system were checked. These activities were repeated during a control flight. Similarly, the aircraft documentation (including the Flight Manual) has been updated in the manner prescribed by the relevant regulations. Our Design Organization Part-21 also actively participated in this modernization. The works included the design of new instrument panels and supports for mounting auxiliary avionic devices - the aforementioned magnetometer, which must be mounted in a specific place of the airframe, as well as "smaller" but no less important elements, such as signal splitters, etc. The Part-21 organization prepared appropriate executive files for CNC devices, thanks to which new mechanical elements were made quickly, precisely and at an acceptable price. In addition, we have prepared appropriate calculations of the
BEFORE MODERNIZATION
These devices are complemented by two spare Garmin G5 pilot and navigational instruments. The engine monitoring instruments were also removed and replaced with a modern Garmin GEA 110 system. The aircraft equipped in this way meets the latest LNAV / VNAV navigation requirements; it can also perform LPV approaches. The modernization of this Cessna was made on the basis of the Approved Model List for Supplementary Type Certificate (AML STC), issued by the manufacturer of the devices, Garmin, which significantly simplified the entire project from the "documentation and paperwork" side. However, it does not mean a lower level of safety. After its installation, ground tests were carried out, during which the operation of individual devices and cooperation

electrical load analysis of the aircraft electrical system after the installation of new equipment, which showed that it will not overload the installation over the limit. The above-described modernization of Cessna aircraft is an example of a constant trend among the owners of civil aircraft in Poland, who more and more often decide to replace old avionic equipment with modern ones. In addition to meeting the latest flight regulations, they also significantly increase the safety of flight operations and crew situational awareness. Thanks to qualified, very experienced and well-coordinated engineering and technical staff, our company successfully performs such modernizations (described in the current and in the previous issues), significantly extending the life of slightly older aircraft and helicopters and, most importantly, enabling their safe use in a dynamically changing airspace.

MX camera systems are multi-sensor and multi-spectral imaging systems, ideal for low-altitude tactical missions and SAR (Serach and Rescue) missions that require easy and flexible installation. The MX series of optoelectronic turrets includes aviation systems such as MX8 with a weight of 6.8 kg, MX10 with a weight of 16.8 kg, Mx15 with a weight of 51.4 kg, MX20 with a weight of 105 kg and MX25 with a weight of 125 kg, ground-based systems such as MX-GCS and MX-RSTA and the MX-10MS system for marine applications. The size and weight range allows to choose the right ssytem, according to specific needs. So far, MX turrets have been used on 50 types of aircraft - from small light aircraft to large transporters, including, among others, they were mounted on such aircraft as C-130 Hercules, C-295M, P-8, V-22, Cessna 206 and 208 and
Pilatus PC-12. MX systems have also found applications on 44 types of helicopters, including: Black Hawk, Apache, the entire family of Bell, Eurocopter, Agusta helicopters, as well as Mi-8 and Mi-17. They are also used on 18 types of unmanned aerial vehicles, including: Shaddow, Shiebel, Skeldar, MQ-9 Reaper, Bayraktar TB2 and of course Pegaz-19, on 6 types of balloons, 10 types of armored vehicles and 5 types of warships. Recently, the R66 police helicopter in Florida was equipped with the MX-10 observation system, which we write about on the page 14.
Application of the L3 Harris MX cameras
The most important MX turret features Blending – i.e. mixing images from different sensors, e.g. visible light and infrared, at the same time. It is one of the many optimization tools the turret has. It takes place automatically after selecting the observation mode and allows to see what is not visible at all or is very poorly visible with the use of individual sensors, e.g. observation of a building with glazed surfaces, air convection over hot surfaces.
Designator – the laser target pointer which allows target marking with laser, and thus the so-called coupling of laser guided weapon to the selected target. The weapon may be launched from the aircraft on which the warhead is installed or from another aircraft. This feature of the MX turrets allows them to be widely used in the modernization of older types of helicopters and aircraft, eliminating the need to equip them with targeting systems dedicated only to guiding the effectors. By using the MX turret marked with 'D' designation, we obtain both observation and sighting possibilities.
Laser illuminator – the laser illuminator is an interesting device that allows the operator to observe on the display the target (or object) in the dark, and for other participants of the action in night vision goggles, working in the so-called near infrared. The illuminated object observed in infrared is seen as illuminated by a reflector, while without night vision devices it is invisible. For example, a wanted person, hiding in the dark in the bushes, is visible through night vision devices, and he himself does not notice that he is illuminated. The memory of selected objects allows for automatic directing of the head sensors to the point selected by the operator. This is a very convenient option for the operator during an observation mission with predetermined objects. It significantly reduces the time of searching for points of interest, allowing to focus on the objects of the highest priority.
AVIONICS | PRODUCTS | NEWS
7
The tasks of MX camera operator The main tasks of the operator include searching for objects specified in the task of a given mission and their observation, as well as optimization of the image collected by the turret sensors using system tools in order to obtain the best possible parameters and the most accurate information about the object.
The quality of the sensor seen by the user Talking about the quality of the sensors, we provide two examples confirming their wide possibilities and operation: “We flew a Cessna 208 on a training flight over the city of Loveland, Colorado just after sunset with a slight haze when we caught some smoke rising above the forest in the mountains. We decided to check if it was a fire. After pointing the turret in that direction (the MX15 turret was installed on the airplane), we easily recognized single fires, probably lit by forest workers, and not a surface fire typical of a burning forest. The indicated distance was 50 miles, (about 80 km) ” – said Adam Bagiński, Product Manager in the Avionics Department, in an interview with us.
8
AVIONICS | PRODUCTS | NEWS
“While observing Lake Ontario with the MX8 turret from L3 training center in Burlington, it was possible to spot the outline of the Niagara Falls Observation Tower. In this case, the weather was very good, the air was clear, and the image was optimized with all available system tools and, of course, with the "blending" function. The distance across the bay was about 70 km ”- ”- continued Adam Bagiński The long list of MX turrets applications and their wide possibilities proves their potential in the modernization of other types of aircraft. There are comprehensive solutions available, such as a package containing a turret with an operator's position and attached weapon hardpoints, for which the turret is also a sight. Such a solution was implemented on the Black Hawk helicopter, but it should be treated as an example and possible to use on other types of helicopters, taking into account their specificity and the requirements of the future user. Modernization works can be performed in Polish plants, and our company, as a representative L3 Harris manufacturer of turrets) in Poland, can provide support in the design and delivery of assembly instructions.

2021 marks the 40-year anniversary of Universal Avionics continuing to uphold its commitment to provide innovative solutions that help private, business, and commercial airplane and helicopter pilots fly better, smarter, and safer.
Welcome to another episode of “Name that Avionics OEM.” Today’s question is: What avionics original equipment manufacturer was the first to introduce the “modern” flight management system, synthetic vision displays, and localizer performance with vertical guidance approach capabilities to business aviation aircraft? Time’s up. If your answer was Universal Avionics, congratulations! You truly know your avionics OEMs. All fun and games aside, since its inception in 1981, Universal Avionics has been at the forefront of many significant avionics systems innovations. But, alas, the minds behind these industry -leading innovations were much more concerned with helping pilots than marking dates in history. “The company was founded in 1981 by Hubert Naimer and has a long and significant legacy within the aviation industry,” explained Dror Yahav, chief executive officer for Universal Avionics. “He was an extremely innovative thinker. Looking into the future, he had a prophecy of how the flight management market would evolve. “We were the first ones to do many significant things in aviation: FMS, synthetic vision and LPV approaches, among other things. As Yahav explained, the company’s next-generation enhanced vision system will borrow video content analysis capabilities from the automotive industry and bring those benefits into the cockpit. “While you can look at our current enhanced vision displays and see a lot more than you can with your naked eye, we’re taking inspiration from the newest trends in the automotive industry to identify objects, people, vehicles and obstacles,” he said. “Obviously, it’s much more challenging in the aerospace market, but based on our enhanced vision system, we are well along in developing a system that not only sees better than the pilot but can automatically provide guidance and alerts based on that information.”
The future of integrated flight management systems The third emerging product that Yahav discussed is the company’s new-generation interactive flight management system, or i-FMS. “Since our beginning, we have delivered over 40,000 flight management system LRUs, making it the leader in many platforms,” Yahav explained. “We have taken that foundation and redesigned our FMS to become a software based system. We have a launch customer for the product, and once it’s certified, we can put it practically anywhere.” According to the company, the i-FMS is a flexible and open-architecture system that can be hosted on a variety of current hardware platforms. It enables new concepts in humanmachine interface such as augmenting head-down displays with ClearVision head-up displays, and head-wearable displays allowing pilots to fly by sight. In addition, the i-FMS tackles one of the main challenges pilots face today with FMS operations; the need to manually enter changes to the FMS during critical phases of flight such as takeoff and landing. Typically, during this time, pilots are required to shift their attention from outside the cockpit window to the FMS display unit – to reprogram the FMS and validate that changes are correct – requiring last-minute updates and significant head down operations. The i-FMS allows pilots to project waypoints and information from the FMS onto the real world, superimposed on UA’s HUD or SkyLens HWD. “Because this is a sophisticated piece of software, it will ultimately interact with existing systems with no need to rewire the airplane or change components,” Yahav said. “The entire i-FMS activity can be very well integrated with a variety of different platforms.”
Universal Avionics’ GIII
Featuring a software-based, flexible open-architecture system, Universal’s interactive flight management system (i-FMS) can run on a variety of hardware options – from OEM supplied platforms, to commercial or paramilitary versions.

Not surprisingly, when it came time to pick the ideal aircraft to act both as a certification mule and a flying demonstrator, the company’s choice was the venerable Gulfstream GIII. “We chose the Gulfstream GIII because it offered both a large cabin and it was the last of its type to still have federated avionics and systems,” Yahav said. “The GIV had a fullyintegrated flight deck. The federated cockpit allowed us to keep the original autopilot and other systems, but it’s still upgradable in terms of its displays and other avionics.” According to the company, the
Gulfstream’s cockpit features the latest in Universal Avionics systems, inclu-ding its interactive human machine interface technologies for enhanced head-up/head-down coordination. It also has Universal Avionics’ InSight integrated flight deck solution with EFI-1040 displays, featuring the company’s new interactive synthetic vision system. Complementing the new flight deck displays is the new i-FMS, the ClearVision EFVS, EVS5000 enhanced vision system camera, and SkyLens HWD. “The InSight display system upgrade is an excellent choice for high-end platforms thanks to its flexibility to work with installed systems that are still viable,” Yahav said. “Operators do not need to perform a complete rip and tear of their cockpit in order to gain the best-in-class capabilities such as data communication and enhanced situational awareness. “Along with the federated cockpit, we also wanted the large cabin and long-range capabilities that the GIII offered. In addition to demonstrating all of our equipment, the GIII’s size and range let us easily accommodate our passengers and make long trips at high altitudes.”
Universal Avionics HWD for helicopters While he was on the subject of the relative ease of which operators can now add all the various features and functions of Universal Avionics’ head-wearable display to more aircraft types, Yahav stressed the many advantages this technology brings to helicopters. “I’m not a helicopter pilot, but my observation is that many helicopter pilots are doing the most dangerous missions, and the equipment they are using is minimal,” Yahav said. “It’s lacking to a point where it’s almost unfair to them. When you are flying EMS (emergency medical services) or SAR (search and rescue) in a helicopter, you don’t know where you’re landing, and you usually have wires, terrain, and obstacles all around you. It’s very stressful and dangerous. “What we offer this market in our head-wearable display is a very affordable and proven solution that can be installed on most EMS helicopters. It’s kind of baseline technology for the military. When those pilots leave the military and enter the commercial market, they can’t understand how they’re expected to fly these missions without this kind of equipment. We understand that, and we have added our EVS-4000 multispectral camera that can switch night into day for those pilots. “The demand in the market is there; we’re working hard to bring our HWD to more helicopters right now. With enhanced vision, infrared vision, synthetic vision, and HTAWS (helicopter terrain awareness and warning system), it’s a great safety enhancement for all kinds of helicopter operations, and it’s a big part of our future.”
Better tools for dealers CWhile it’s clear that Universal Avionics is investing heavily in new products and capabilities, Yahav was quick to point out that the company has also been increasing its efforts to help its dealers and avionics shops do their jobs better. “I think one
thing that sets us apart is that we are easy to work with,” he said. “I don’t want to downplay our competitors – they’re very good – but avionics shops know that when they work with us, we are going to go out of our way to support their needs. One of our latest advancements is we can now do our InSight software updates totally remote. “Regardless of what COVID-19 travel restrictions you are under and what your policy is for accommodating visitors or technical representatives, we can now connect to the aircraft and troubleshoot issues from anywhere.” The company recently completed its first remote InSight display systems software upgrade in a Hawker 800XP business jet located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. “Remote connection is an unprecedented use of technology that allows us to instantly snyc, troubleshoot, diagnose and configure systems while they remain installed on the aircraft,” he said. “The successful completion of this remote connection presents extensive possibilities for Universal Avionics, its dealers, and end customers. In this case, it saved 10 or more days of aircraft downtime.” Another new remote tool that Universal Avionics has recently brought to the market is its UA Academy, a distancelearning solution. “We can’t introduce a lot of new technologies into the market without providing state-of-the-art training solutions; that’s what UA Academy is all about,” Yahav said. “Now, every training tool we have is available online so our dealers and customers can access it at any time, and from anywhere they are.”
Not every solution – just the right solution What sets Universal Avionics apart in an increasingly crowded avionics market? Well, maybe more than you think. “We have a lot of things that really differentiate us from our competition, but it’s not a better touchscreen, a better menu, or a bigger display – it’s our completely different concept of how to do things,” Yahav said. “We often take inspiration by what’s been done in other segments of aviation and other industries. “A fighter pilot can do everything they need while looking outside of the aircraft. It’s a fundamental difference in doing things. That’s the way we approach things. We’re not going to compete with display sizes or features; we want to deliversignificantly different capabilities – a profound way of flying.” Universal Avionics is not an “all things to all customers” type of company, and it’s ok with that. In fact, they will tell you upfront that they may not be the best solution to a particular customer’s need, which is truly unique in itself. “If an operator is looking to a complete rip-and-tear panel upgrade solution, we are probably not their best solution,” Yahav said. “However, suppose they want to retain their existing autopilot and federated systems. In that case, we offer excellent products and capabilities and are going to be a very good fit.”

DAT Gains LPV and ADS-B Out Capabilities with Universal Avionics' Certified ATR 42/72 SBAS-FMS Solution Solution Offers Fully Coupled 3D, LPV, and BARO VNAV Approach Capabilities
LPV offers the highest precision GPS instrument approaches currently available without specialized aircrew training requirements, enabling access to those airports with reduced ground infrastructure and which are often used by regional operators. There are currently more than 700 LPV approaches in Europe, and even more throughout the rest of the world. In North America alone, there are more than 4,600 different LPV approaches to date at over 1,900 airports, including almost 1,200 airports that do not have an ILS.
Tucson, Arizona - March 18, 2021 – Universal Avionics announces EASA STC approval of the company's high-performance SBAS-FMS solution for the ATR 42 and ATR 72 flight deck. Danish Air Transport (DAT) is now operating the certified system and enjoying the benefits of fully coupled 3D, LPV, and BARO VNAV approach capabilities. Built on UA's UNS-1Lw SBAS-FMS, the STC provides an integrated solution that covers the replacement of every configuration of FMS on ATR 42 and 72, up to and including the -500. This vital modernization leads to more direct and shorter approaches, saving time and keeping operators on schedule, while also reducing fuel burn. With UA's two-in-one solution, regional and transport aircraft operators not only gain LPV approach capabilities, but also meet current and emerging mandates for ADS-B Out. "As the world prepares to recover from this pandemic, airlines are gearing up with technology solutions to ensure high efficiency and competitiveness,” said Dror Yahav, UA Chief Executive Officer. “Our SBAS-FMS solution is an excellent example of how to achieve a highly capable fleet with a minimum expense,” he added. “For more than 25 years, Universal Avionics has been a leading provider of Flight Management Systems to the regional aircraft market,” said Marc Bouliane, UA Vice President of Business Development, Marketing and Services. “This STC, based on our latest SBAS-FMS, enables ATR operators to save time and money, and to expand market access by enabling the use of airport approaches which are inaccessible with the legacy solution.”
Available with a Multi-function Control Display Unit (MCDU) or a 4- / 5-inch Control Display Unit, UA's integrated SBAS-FMS solution does not require any modification of the Main Instrument Panel to add new controls and annunciations typically found with LPV solutions. The memory capacity of the UNS-1Lw SBAS-FMS enables loading of worldwide navigation databases, with room to spare, simplifying maintenance operations compared to the legacy nonSBAS FMS on the aircraft. Finally, the solution is available with a FlexPerf™ Trip Performance option for even greater fuel savings. The STC package and installation kit design was led by ASM, a JANA Company. UA's SBAS-FMSs are installed in over 1,100 airliners to date, including most regional aircraft types such as the ATR 42/72, Dash-8 100/200/300/400, Saab 340, and Embraer ERJ.

rapidly in limited viewing range environments. This technology eliminates estimating the location of terrain and obstacles, and significantly improves flight safety. Head-Wearable Display Advantages
From the Flight Deck: The Next Generation of HUD Technology Over the last 20+ years I've worked as a flight test pilot and systems engineer, we've seen SBAS GPS come online and provide LPV precision approach capability to 6,000+ runways, and we've seen SVS and now domestic CPDLC expand across the globe. ADS-B Out just became a regulatory requirement, and ADS-B In applications continue to grow in attractiveness and cost benefit. The new major development is the next generation of sensors with the ability to augment natural vision. The application has been around for some time, but as technology develops and the capability of those systems continues to grow, new applications to advance aviation safety and operational capabilities are being pursued. Here at UA, we have our ClearVision™ Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) solution featuring enhanced vision (EVS), SVS, and a combination of both integrated onto a single display called a Combined Vision System (CVS). Head-Up, Eyes Out Did you know that Head-Up Display (HUD) systems have roots dating back to World War II, with the original application being a fighter optical sight called a reflector sight? It eliminated parallax sighting issues and represented the first head-up gun sight. Its origins in civil aviation date back to the 1970s, and HUD Cat IIIA certification was first accomplished with a fixed overhead combiner HUD more than 30 years ago. UA now offers the next generation of HUD devices, which combine small display technologies with EFVS camera inputs and SVS elements onto the display. Which leads me to the SkyLens™ display, a head-wearable device with VHUD / SVS / EFVS capabilities. This impressive technology provides flight guidance, system status and alerting, and unparalleled enhanced natural vision, allowing pilots to fly safer and easier, while operating head-up. Now, I know I'm not the only pilot who has flown an instrument approach into an unfamiliar airport during the night and even though it's VFR weather. Which is why everyone should find these augmented visual systems so exciting. Regardless of weather, it's no longer necessary to fly into a dark abyss at night with no visual advantage, because unseen terrain or obstacles are just as substantial a threat as one that's obscured by weather. With all due respect to current generation TAWS systems, which only issue an alert and provides no guidance for an escape maneuver, the next generation of systems needs to assist in providing that visual feedback to allow the crew to make the correct evasive maneuver. Fortunately with a head worn device, we have the ability to expand viewing angles (area of regard) far beyond the traditional limited field of view of a HUD, and we have the ability to display significantly more terrain data, either SVS, EVS, or CVS. As the pilot turns his head left or right, the overall level of situational awareness grows

Head-Wearable Displays (HWD) like the SkyLens also have the advantage of being easily installed as they do not require any large overhead combiners, and the unit can be removed and replaced in a matter of minutes for maintenance. Ease of use is a basic design element with SkyLens, and adjustments to the wearable unit can be accomplished quickly with proper training. With all the basic data and guidance in the VHUD provided by SkyLens, it is simple for the flight crew to use the VHUD display combined with the EVS camera data and SVS data to have a fully integrated single source display for all flight information neces-sary to operate the aircraft. SkyLens also forms the basis of the new generation of display systems that provide a cost effective way of providing a HUD capability in an airplane, either retrofit or forward fit, as well as the capability of flying to reduced minimums in lower than standard Cat I weather on almost any runway. Continued flight test provides us with visual advantage results allowing for 50% reduction in RVR in many cases, virtually eliminating the need or expense of certifying and maintaining a Cat II or Cat III system, not to mention the limited availability of those types of approaches around the world. Cat I enhanced approaches are commonplace and readily available to operators. It's a great time to be in aviation with all these developing technologies, and at UA we're dedicated to the best customer experience with world class products and innovation. We hope to tell you more about it in our future instal-lments of this series as we progress on our projects and ultimate STC certi-fication in the near future, as instal-lations are rolled out and our customers gain the competitive edge in operating capabilities using cutting edge Enhan-ced Flight Vision Systems.

To optimize selection and control of GFC 600 modes, a compact self-contained autopilot controller incorporates backlit keys and a bright, sunlight readable display that depicts autopilot status and mode selection. An intuitive built-in control wheel also provides convenient adjustment of aircraft pitch, airspeed, and vertical speed modes. When facing potential situations of disorientation, the autopilot controller features a dedicated level mode (LVL) button that, when engaged by the pilot, can command the autopilot to automatically return the aircraft to straightand-level flight.
Modern Capabilities As a standard feature, pilots receive Garmin Electronic Stability and Protection (ESP™) with the GFC 600 digital autopilot, which works to assist the pilot in maintaining the aircraft in a stable flight condition. ESP functions independently of the autopilot and works in the background when the pilot is hand-flying the aircraft to help avoid inadvertent flight attitudes or bank angles and to help provide airspeed protection.
Additional autopilot capabilities of the GFC 600 include: ! Traditional autopilot functions with modern capabilities such as altitude preselect and indicated airspeed hold mode;
! Pilots can select, couple to, and fly various instrument approaches, including GPS, ILS, VOR, LOC and back course approaches;
! Underspeed protection helps prevent the aircraft from entering a stall condition; ! Overspeed protection helps prevent the aircraft from exceeding aircraft maximum speed (VNE);
! Yaw Damping (YD) mode minimizes yawing oscillations while also helping to maintain coordinated flight by working to keep the slip/skid indicator centered;
! Flight Director command bars are displayed on the G600 TXi flight display; ! Pilots can fly coupled 'go-arounds' during missed approach sequencing. A remotely-installed go-around button commands the Flight Director to display the appropriate pitch attitude required for the missed approach procedure and activates a loaded missed approach;
! Pitch-trim servo provides automatic trim and manual electric trim with improved speed scheduling;
! Control wheel steering is included. When the autopilot is engaged, this allows the pilot to adjust pitch, roll, altitude hold, vertical speed or airspeed references using the control yoke.
