Our E-learning platform already available !
We would like to invite you to our online trainings ! The outbreak of pandemic forced us all to move our business online in every possible area. We also did not want to resign from our trainings, which we have been organizing for our customers for many years - both in our headquarters in Mykanów and Warsaw, as well as in customers' offices. So we started from the organization of our E-learning platform, which allows interested parties to participate in selected trainings in the form of online sessions. Such form differs substantially from the traditional one – it also offers both, knowledge acquisition and interaction with the trainer, asking questions etc. On our e-learning platform we offer trainings in two fields – Continental digital tachographs and vehicle electronics of the same manufacturer. In the first group there are trainings on practical use of digital tachographs, namely /in particular the DTCO 4.0

smart tachograph, dedicated to drivers and a training in the field of practical use of WorkshopTab, addressed to tachograph workshops. On the other hand, trainings on vehicle electronics covering KIBES 5 system and MVP display are dedicated to engineers and automation specialists from vehicle factories (in particular, vans and public transport buses), both at the research and development stage and for large vehicle manufacturers.
We want to emphasize, that trainings in the field of vehicle electronics are carried out individually for one manufacturer at a time. Our e-learning platform is also available in English for selected trainings (KIBES 5, MVP) . We are pleased to inform that the first online training was carried out for Auto Zyk – a vehicle control station from Poznań. The training involved the practical use of a tool for tachograph inspections - WorkshopTab VDO.
On our e-learning platform we offer trainings in two fields – Continental digital tachographs and vehicle electronics of the same manufacturer. It was carried out on the basis of WorkshopTab tool (WT) and DTCO 4.0 demobox, being a simulation of a real vehicle. But there was also a practical training, eg. concerning calibration of digital tachograph or manipulation. All interested in distance learning are invited to visit our website https://elearning.drabpol.pl, on which our trainings are described in detail. We accept applications for training up to 4 business days before its start. We want to emphasize that we have a promotional offer for our online trainings now.

Assembly of MiX 4000 systems with Ribas in Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses
Effective management of the Gdańsk bus fleet thanks to the MiX 4000 system At the end of May, we finished the last stage of assembly of MiX Telematics 4000 fleet management systems with Ribas eco driving trainer. Our service centre assembled 48 systems on Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses, provided by EvoBus Polska. These buses are used by Gdańskie Autobusy i Tramwaje company. The whole project was spread out over time. The installation took place at the Grupa WRÓBEL headquarters in Gdańsk - an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer. Our solution has been applied in 29 Citaro C2 S3 buses - 12m long, 13 Citaro C2 S3 G buses - 18m long and six Mercedes Citaro C2 S3 buses with a length of 10m. We are pleased that EvoBus company has chosen our system from among many other telematics solutions. This was certainly influenced by several important aspects, such as

device capabilities and functions, benefits of using it, or our long-time experience in this sector. MiX 4000 is a thoroughly modern solution that is in line with recent trends on the market. It enables fleet management and the in-depth assessment of driver's work and his driving style. Owing to this, the system reduces the fuel consumption and lowers the accident rate. On device motherboard there is a GSM modem, GPS receiver, accelerometer (acceleration sensor), Bluetooth low energy,
I/O, two CAN outputs, two RS232 ports, four steering outputs and 434/915 MHZ short range transceiver. Integration of a short range RF connection together with GSM transmission allows for communication via two alternative channels (at different frequencies).
- over-speeding - heavy breaking - extensive acceleration - vehicle collision - low-battery voltage, etc.
The device can alternatively use GSM GPRS (2G) or HSPA (3G) modems; GSM antenna is integrated (external antennas are not required). The device software can be changed remotely via the GSM network. In case of loss of the GSM connection (no coverage, network failure, etc.) MiX 4000 can store up to 20 000 messages.
MiX 4000 can identify the driver both by means of a special key (blue driver key), like with currently used keys in older systems, as well as it is possible to identify the driver by reading the driver card from the digital tachograph or optionally by connecting to ticket machines. The device also has an integrated module that allows remote reading of the driver card or tachograph mass memory. MiX 4000 has been equipped with two analogue inputs providing 12 bits of accuracy, and two frequency inputs with the option of recording frequencies above 20 KHz.
The device is fully compatible with MiX event engine and enables registration of all events, also those created for older types of devices. For example, it is possible to register the following events:
Communication ports of MiX 4000 enable direct connection of additional devices such as: ! Ribas - eco driving trainer, !
·Mix Vison - a camera system allowing for simultaneous observation of the driver and the view in front of the vehicle,
!
·Alcolock - an interlock preventing people from starting a vehicle after drinking alcohol,
!
·CPC - tire pressure and temperature monitoring system
The additional device connected with MiX 4000 in case of Mercedes-Benz buses is Ribas, called a virtual trainer in driver's cab, that encourages the driver to improve his driving style. The device affects the driver's driving style because it informs him each time about exceeding the vehicle speed thresholds set by the employer, engine revs, every heavy breaking and acceleration, as well as leaving the vehicle idling too long.
We would like to say thank you to EvoBus company for choosing our solution and fruitful cooperation during the implementation of the project, and we wish Gdańskie Autobusy i Tramwaje a safe driving with the MiX 4000 system.

The pandemic, that we have to face for the first time in such a global dimension has undoubtedly influenced activity of all companies and organizations. Each of them felt and still feels the effects of it. We all had to adapt to the new working conditions, functioning, specific contacts with people and many other aspects. Our company has been cooperating with such important organizations for the transport market as the Association of International Road Transporters and the Chamber of Commerce for Public Transport almost from the beginning of its activity. Three months after the epidemiological emergency was
announced, that unfortunately continues, we asked the representatives of both organizations how their activities changed during the pandemic and how they found themselves in this unusual situation.
Interview with Mr. Piotr Mikiel –Director of Transportation Department at ZMPD.
HOW DO POLISH CARRIES HANDLE WITH THE EFFECTS OF A PANDEMIC? ZMPD as the biggest Polish Association in the transportation industry supported and is still supporting transportation development in our country and abroad. Merits ZMPD for the development of this important branch of the economy, as well as for the entire family of Polish road carriers are invaluable. Especially in this difficult period for all, the support of Polish carriers, who have undoubtedly suffered the effects of a pandemic is extremely important. Director of Transportation Department at ZMPD shared with us the scale of ZMPD activities, as well as the analysis of the current situation in the Association.
Drabpol News: ZMPD is known for its activity in supporting international road carriers and organizing numerous industry meetings. What is the association's activity during the pandemic?
12
OUR CUSTOMERS
Piotr Mikiel: Our activities do not change significantly. We are still trying to monitor situation on the transportation market by informing road carriers about obstacles they may encounter when performing transport.
Thus, from our point of view and our business activity little has changed, except from the fact that in times of a pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus we did not organize regional industry meetings, because we simply could not do these. In the first phase of the pandemic, the conditions of transport in individual countries were changing as in a kaleidoscope. Now the situation is slowly returning to the preepidemic norm, individual countries are lifting the restrictions, but not all. We are still involved in public consultations of legal acts - national and Community ones. We address the national authorities providing information on practical difficulties related to transport performance and postulates how to solve the problems that carriers constantly encounter when carrying out their transport activities. We cooperate with associations from abroad and we exchange knowledge about the conditions of transport in our countries The difference is that there have been many more such contacts lately. DN: Once again, in the course of the last few years, transportation industry has come under severe test. What do you think is the future of Polish road carriers in the ongoing pandemic and after its ceasing? P.M.: Probably nobody these days, starting from doctors and ending with entrepreneurs, does not think that the coronavirus epidemic will end as soon as it began. As a result, we will have to deal with the effects of this pandemic for much longer. “This is also confirmed by international economic forecasts, which show that a return to the pre-pandemic economic situation in Europe may occur not earlier than in 12, maybe 18 months.
resumption of production will take place in EU countries, how will the demand for specific consumer goods or services, including transport services, be shaped. It will depend on many factors, social - related to the labour market, economic related to international trade, but also with fear that the situation with coronavirus infection may get worse again in Autumn. This in turn could cause another slowdown in the global economy. DN: What is the scale of changes in supply chain due to the reintroduction of border controls? P.M.: The reintroduction of controls at internal EU borders resulted in longer delivery times. It is worth noting that European Commission recommended that the restrictions introduced by individual Member States on the free movement of persons in connection with the coronavirus pandemic should not apply to the transport of goods. And so it happened, despite the fact that some countries temporarily introduced some restrictions, particularly those concerning (let me remind) moving only on certain roads, entering only through specific border crossings or setting the time for loading or unloading goods and even the time of transit through a given country. The only country that introduced a ban on entry to its territory for carriers from other countries was Turkey. This caused a lot of tension, including reprisal on Turkish carriers in return. DN: What news is coming from the associated road carriers? Are there positive signals from the market or maybe the market needs a lot more time to start returning to the state before pandemic?
This can be observed on the market of transport services – there are approx. 20 – 30% less orders and in addition, carriers are reporting a decrease in freight prices for transport services. This means that transport companies need to prepare for a stronger tightening of the belt, that is reduction of investment expenditure, rolling stock optimization, and consequently reduction in employment.
P.M.: So far, the carriers more often report a problem related to prolonged payment periods for the rendered transport services, or difficulties in recovering outstanding freight charges. If we add the smaller number of transport orders and lower rates, the situation does not look good. We can observe an excess supply over demand in transport market. As a result, some road carriers often agree on carriage conditions, which should not be generally accepted for various reasons.
We have a great deal of uncertainty as to how and when the

intermediary companies which order transports and later do not intend to pay for them. Therefore, as ZMPD, we have taken a number of different initiatives aiming at limiting the activity of intermediary companies in the carriage of goods. We applied, among others, to the Ministry of Justice to introduce penalties for the so-called service fraud. Companies engaged in such practices must be effectively eliminated from the market. DN: What actions to support Polish international carriers are planned in the nearest future by ZMPD? P.M.: ZMPD has been supporting its members for years with information on the conditions of international transport in various countries Moreover, we take a number of lobbying
activities aimed at working out the best solutions for Polish transport companies, both in Poland and abroad. At the beginning of corovavirus pandemic we asked the government to launch support instruments for the transport industry, which the government then implemented through a series of laws aimed at alleviating the negative economic effects of a pandemic, called the Anti-crisis Shield. We have organized a number of webinars on possible support instruments for the road carriers. We monitor the situation on the transport services market and we will take appropriate actions depending on the needs. Thank you for the conversation and we hope that the situation in Polish transport will quickly return to normal.
Interview with Ms. Dorota Kacprzyk - President of the Chamber of Commerce for Public Transport.
NEW CHALLENGES IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT Also a domestic public transport, every day transporting millions of people throughout Poland, faced a huge challenge. Shortly after the pandemic was announced the number of transported passengers was limited to no more than half the number of seats. These restrictions have already been removed, but this does not mean that the communication industry sector is no longer feeling the effects of a pandemic. Ensuring the safety of passenger transport as well as the safety of drivers and all public transport employees became the most important challenge that the public transport had to face. Therefore, the introduction of new sanitary standards to minimize the risk of coronavirus infection has become a priority. We asked about these standards, as well as about the current situation in the public transport sector Ms. Dorota Kacprzyk - President of the Chamber of Commerce for Public Transport.
Drabpol News: What is your opinion on the future of public transport companies, as well as your sales forecasts for OEM sector and other companies from the widely understood public transport sector in the ongoing pandemic and after its ceasing? Dorota Kacprzyk: I am far from demonising the effects of a pandemic in the urban public transport sector. Indeed, since March, ticket revenues have dropped dramatically, but the outflow of passengers from public transport was caused more by the so-called "lockdown - closing workplaces, schools or transition to remote work and an obligation to stay at home rather than by passengers' fear of using public transport. We observed a noticeable return of passengers yet during the increase in the incidence, and closely related to the stages of loosening restrictions by the government. We began to struggle with the lack of rolling stock to handle returning passengers in the situation of such strict transport limits imposed by the government. Obviously, the period of social isolation influenced the economic situation of public transport companies, OEM sector

and other around-system companies. In many cities, there was a significant reduction in transport performance, and as a result in remuneration. These companies with their fixed costs and unplanned additional costs of disinfection, got into difficulty. In my opinion, if companies from our branch entered the pandemic period in a generally good condition, they will be able, in a short period of time, to make up for the level of services or the level of sales from before the pandemic. I must admit that IGKM is still struggling to obtain financial support from public funds, because for now we consider the level of this support insufficient. D.N.: IGKM is well know from organizing numerous industry meetings, which are important points in many company calendars. How did the Chamber find its place in the new reality? D.K.: The activity of the Chamber is largely based on the organization of trade fairs, congress meetings, industry committees and various trainings. Of course, during the
Ms. Dorota Kacprzyk - President of the Chamber of Commerce for Public Transport. pandemic, we were forced to suspend our business and cancel all meetings scheduled for the first half of the year, and to move some of them to a later date. Due to the difficult time and many problems our members had to face, we did not consider implementing solutions used by others, like organization of teleconferences and paid webinars. In that time, we directed our efforts to our statutory work, which is a large part of our tasks - we did not idle at that time. We represented the interests of our industry on an ongoing basis, mainly through contact with ministries regarding the provisions of laws and regulations regarding the urban public transport sector. I will say immodestly that we have successfully won several important solutions. We hope that soon we will be able to return to personal meetings with members. D. N.: A huge drop in the number public transport passengers is behind us. Now, we can observe a slow return to “normality, but how do public transport companies plan to get back the trust of potential passengers? D.K.: How will urban mobility look like after the pandemic? A lot of statistical research and studies on the potential permanent outflow of passengers from public transport have already been created. But I am optimistic, in the peak of the pandemic there was a lack of places in vehicles, this is the best proof that passengers
are not afraid of public transport. Of course some of them may not have any alternative, but in my opinion we all have a tendency to forget what was bad quickly. Public transport must be aware that a more efficient transport offer, well planned timetables, care for travel quality, punctuality, quality of vehicles and their equipment will be needed, all in combination with care for the environment. We can't loose the trend that can be observed within the last 3-5 years, which increases the importance of public transport as an element of raising the comfort of life in the city, fighting traffic jams and smog. And privately, I hope that the cleanness procedures introduced due to the pandemic will stay with us forever. D.N.: What signals are coming from public transport companies regarding actions taken for the safety of passengers, as well as employees, and in particular drivers? D.K.: Public transport companies, with the help of service companies from our sector, responded promptly and ideally to the epidemic situation. Each company has introduced safety procedures to protect employees, drivers and passengers without any recommendations or top-down imposed rules. The door release buttons were turned off, driver buffer zones were organized, and new standards for cleaning and disinfecting vehicles were introduced over time. I hope that such care for cleanness and hygiene by constantly searching for new technologies, such as vehicle ozonisation, coating with special viral- and bactericidal coatings, the use of antivirus handrails, non-contact hand disinfectors inside vehicles, will stay with us for a long time. After all, all these technologies were already known before the pandemic. Thank you for the interview, and we wish all public transport companies in the country safe transport.

OUR PARTNERS in times of the coronavirus Representatives of our leading partners – MiX Telematics and Continental – shared their insights on functioning in a time of pandemic. Like all global corporations, also these manufacturers were forced to adapt to new realities and unexpected market situations.
Interview with Mr. Jonathan Bates – Marketing Director at MiX Telematics.
TELEMATICS as an effective management tool in times of pandemic MiX Telematics, a manufacturer of telematics systems provides information and related services for the effective management of mobile assets, including vehicles used for private and commercial purposes in over 100 countries, on six continents. Did the new
technologies introduced by the company enable it to maintain a stable market position in times of pandemic? We asked about that Mr. Jonathan Bates – Marketing Director.
Drabpol News: MiX Telematics has always been guided by the principle of creating systems that solve customers' problems. Can we expect new product solutions in the current situation with COVID-19? Jonathan Bates: MiX has one of the broadest product portfolios of any telematics provider globally, with our customer success teams finding new and innovative applications for our products every day. This has been very evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, with new problems calling for new solutions. For example, MiX's task management application has been used by drivers and their employers as a way to keep communication channels open digitally, with drivers self-certifying before each shift that they don't have any discernible COVID-19 symptoms. This provides an important checkpoint every day between employer and driver, in addition to regular verbal communication, boosting safety and productivity, providing digital tools to keep in touch.
16
OUR PARTNERS
DN.: What actions did MiX Telematics take to support its regional partners and service buyers during the pandemic? J.B.: MiX Established a pandemic response committee comprising the most senior executives from across the globe, who meet regularly to leverage advice from the WHO and CDC as guidance. MiX has also been proactive in running a partner education programme via its e-learning platform – the MiX Learning Centre - to share key information that helps partners to understand the facts about the Coronavirus. Additionally, MiX has been leveraging technology to conduct meetings with partners using virtual tools. Best-practice webinars have been run progressively with partners to maintain the communication and customer service that our customers expect and deserve from us.
Furthermore, the visibility that MiX's solutions provides has been invaluable to fleet operators during a very challenging time. This visibility is critical to operators who are either experiencing drastically reduced demand or increased demand. In the case of decreased demand such as for bus and coach companies, operators have been using MiX's tracking tools and reporting suite to re-assess the optimum utilisation of their assets to maximise cost efficiency. In the case of increased demand such as for food delivery or field service companies, operators are using MiX's tools to increase productivity, whilst using video telematics and hours of service modules to ensure that drivers are supported in terms of safe driving and not driving when fatigued. Live streaming to ride along with a driver to live “in their shoes” is a particularly effective way to support drivers during potentially more stressful times. These tools help operators to balance extraordinarily busy schedules with the need to have especially caring safety programmes in place to ensure that drivers aren't being put under too much pressure to deliver without taking into account their safety and wellbeing.
MiX has supported partners by continuing to manufacture and deliver products and re-assuring partners and customers that its SaaS software platform and valued added services will continue to be available and managed 24/7. DN.: What does MiX Telematics forecast for the telematics market in Europe and in the world. Was a new trend created during this time, and if so, will it stay with us for a long time? J.B.: MiX has been monitoring daily, weekly and monthly customer activity across its 818k+ subscriber base and has seen trends vary widely by customer industry of operation. We envisage that the trend of digital-ordering of essential supplies and consumer goods is unlikely to abate following the pandemic. The world is certainly in flux and we do anticipate that the digitalization of the supply chain and of customer and partner interaction will be accelerated by the outbreak of COVID-19. It is also our hope that the positive environmental impact will continue to be supported by the combined efforts of telematics partners and customers, to seek to build greener, more efficient operations. Additionally, this pandemic has caused the world to look at safety and reliability of supply in more vital terms than ever before. We envisage that this focus on health and safety for all individuals and fleet operators will continue into the future.
Mr. Jonathan Bates – Marketing Director at MiX Telematics Our task management application has been used, for example, by drivers and their employers as a way to keep communication channels open digitally, with drivers self-certifying before each shift that they don't have any discernible COVID-19 symptoms. Live streaming to ride along with a driver is a particularly effective way to support drivers in a time of pandemic.

How does Continental react on pandemic? German manufacturer, as one of the leading providers of smart technologies for the automotive market also had to face the unexpected pandemic. This global corporation has 246 production plants around the world. Since mid-March, over 40 percent of them has stopped production for a period from several days to several weeks. At
the beginning of May, only one-fifth of the production plants has ceased operations– in particular those located in the USA, Mexico, Russia and India. We asked Dr Thomas Olbrich, Director, Business Unit CVS – Commercial Vehicles & Services – in Continental Automotive, about the impact of that on company's situation and about further development perspectives.
Drabpol News: Continental Corporation is a global company. How did the markets of individual countries react to the situation caused by Covid-19?
Economy in the US was very strong for several years now. There was a “cooling down” of economics parameters to be expected for 2020 – now overlaid by Covid-19 effects. Generally we expect for 2020 that the sales reduction in North America might be even somehow larger than in Europe.
Thomas Olbrich: The Covid-19 pandemic affects all regions and all markets. We see that some regions seem to have already recovered strongly and that their production volumes in some cases come back close to the 2019 values – see China. However, this can not be generalized. There are commercial vehicles plants in Asia that announced a complete shut-down extension to December 2020 already.

D.N.: Continental constantly develops its existing products and creates new dedicated to the OEM market, in particular vehicle factories. Does the current situation on the market affect the pace of technology development?
T.O.: The pace of technology development has changed due to the Covid-19 crisis. Vehicles manufacturers have delayed or stopped development programs. “Cash-is-king” – this is a maxime to recover this crisis – and this also strongly affects technology development. However, out of any crisis there are also new and extra opportunities coming up. D.N.: What do you think are the forecasts for the OEM automotive market in Europe, for this and next year. Did the changes causes by the pandemic start a new, unexpected trend?
a trend discussed that consumer may demand fewer cars than the years before. Through the Covid-19 crisis, there is a strong volume decline in 2020 and it is not clear if or when the 2019 will be reached again. The commercial vehicles markets do severely suffer from the Covid-19 crisis through plant shut-downs and the resulting market unsecurity. However, it can be expected – and this is what we can see already now to some extend – that the markets will pick up soon, again.
T.O: For the passenger car markets, there is a strong political will to move towards electric cars. On top, there is
Dr Thomas Olbrich, Director, Business Unit CVS – Commercial Vehicles & Services – in Continental Automotive The company having subsidiaries in 59 countries had to face huge challenges in a time of pandemic. However, it quickly and effectivelly set two goals- protection of employees' health and maintaining the supply chain. The task was not an easy one , taking into account the global nature of the business and pandemic differentiation in each of the countries. While China has largely returned to normality, Germany and Europe are slowly recovering from „the lockdown”, North America is also still struggling with the coronavirus.

The next stage of avionics modernization of Cessna A185F
Cessna 185 with the modern avionics Three years ago, our PART 21 Design Office and the PART 145 Maintenance Organization modernized the avionic equipment of the Cessna A 185F aircraft - one of two such aircraft currently flying in Poland. We wrote extensively about that modernization in Drabpol News no. 3/2017. This aircraft, originally equipped with 40-year old avionic equipment, received the latest Garmin navigation devices and the glass cockpit, i.e. the G500 flight display system, two NAV COMM GTN750 units with a remote audio panel, a remote transponder, the L-3 Communications WX-500 Stormscope storm and lightning warning system, and JPI Instruments electronic monitoring system of engine parameters. The open system architecture allowed to expand it in the
future with new components, depending on the requests and possibilities of the owner. That moment came this summer. The airplane is undergoing an overhaul, which gives us the opportunity to once again modernize its avionics. So the Cessna 185 came back to us for another upgrade. This time the upgrade offer includes the replacement of the G500 system (which is withdrawn from sale) with the latest

and they are currently installing the GTS 800 anti-collision system and the autopilot.
The classic stand-by instruments will also disappear from the cockpit, replaced by the electronic G5 Attitude Indicator, which combines the indications of an attitude indicator, speed indicator, altimeter, vertical speed indicator, turn indicator and magnetic compass.
The next modernization, however, required the subsequent change of the instrument panel. Our designers from Part 21 Design Office had to first perform measurements of the
As there is already one of the systems increasing the pilot's awareness on board - the WX-500 warning system the GTS 800 active anti-collision system will be added to the tandem of "guarding" flight safety – this is a Traffic Advisory system that informs about traffic of other aircraft equipped with an operating transponder. The GTS 800 system can track up to 45 targets (other aircraft) in a distance up to 22 nautical miles. Such a system is a "second pair of eyes" for the pilot. The last system integrated throughout the project that supplements the equipment to the absolute maximum is the GFC 500 autopilot, which has been gradually developed by Garmin for several years for many aircraft models, obtaining EASA approval. The autopilot operates in 3 axes: pitch, roll and yaw. The modernization design is currently at the stage of installing new devices. Engineers from our Part 145 Maintenance Organization have already replaced the G500 system with the G500TXi,

Electrical power alternatives essential in the digital-instrument age
KEEPING THE JUICE FLOWING STORY BY– Dave Higdon Source: Avionics News, February 2018
There's a truism that pilots recite during hangar-flying sessions and other discussions that holds some truth for their electrical systems. The line goes, “The only
6
AVIONICS | PRODUCTS | NEWS
time you have too much fuel is when your plane is on fire”. For the electrical system, we upend the truism: There's almost never a time when you have too much juice.
Sure, there are overvoltage situations that can burn out electrical components – but our aircraft typically use protections against those situations in the form of circuit breakers, fuses and electrical crowbars designed to cut all power from the electrical system. That’s not the same as having multiple options for keeping electrical power flowing to critical instruments, communicators and navigators. And in today’s world of all-glass cockpits and digital instrumentation, multiple options become a necessity rather than a luxury. It boils down to this: No juice to power those screens, no information on the displays; no radios; no navigators; and no powerplant status information. Today, some glass- panel converts opt to retain some analog instruments. For IFR digital cockpits, the Federal Aviation Administration likes to see indications for, at a minimum, the pilot's information Triple A: airspeed, altitude and attitude. Options exist for independently powered digital versions of the Triple A; options for three-packs of analog instruments, with the airspeed and altitude plumbed into the pitot-static system and a built-in battery to drive the attitude gyro. And some aviators opt to stick with the same information format as their primary flight display by installing a smaller version of the standard PFD - either with its own battery power or powered by a secondary, or standby, electrical power source.
Lose air power and the turn gyro continues to spin on electrical power. Lose the electrical-generating source and the airpowered five continue to work - as do all the electrically powered components, but only as long as the battery lasts. Everything running off the fades from utility as the components drain the battery. The same can't be said for today's growing population of alldigital panels, stacks flying in aircraft with no suction or airpressure source because they use no air-driven instruments. Even the readouts from the pitot-static system are electronic translations of air pressure on solid- state - that is, electronic air-data sensors. Generically, we call it an electronic flight information system, or EFIS. For operators flying aircraft transitioning to glass panels, alternative electrical power is a must - if not implicitly by regulatory fiat, by dent of survival instincts and the reality that a main- ship battery may be insufficient to keep a glass panel and radios functional long enough to get the plane on the ground after a total electricalsystem failure.
IT BOILS DOWN TO THIS: NO JUICE TO POWER THOSE SCREENS, NO INFORMATION ON THE DISPLAYS; NO RADIOS; NO NAVIGATORS; AND NO POWERPLANT STATUS INFORMATION
But alternative power solely for the flight instruments doesn't automatically cover emergency power for the rest of the panel – the radios pilots depend on for communication and navigation. Standby electrical-power solutions can cover that need and came on the scene decades before digital cockpit instruments. In fact, the majority of Part 23 aircraft can claim their systems provide an inherent alternative to the electrical-generating source. And most pilots flying analog panels continue to cruise along relying on the main-ship battery as their standby electrical-power source. But that status depends on the split power configuration of most light aircraft's flight instruments: two air-driven analog gyros - the attitude indicator and directional gyro - and three air-driven air-data instruments, airspeed indicator, altimeter and vertical speed indicator. None of them need electrical power to function; and a single electrically driven turn gyro.
With retrofit spending leading forward-fit in avionics-industry sales according to the latest AEA Avionics Market Report, it appears more pilots continue to turn to digital-options panels for their planes. Thankfully, the avionics industry provides multiple options to keep power flowing to critical displays, communicators and navigators.
The typical analog-panel power system In the majority of single-engine aircraft, some form of lead-acid or, more recently, lithium-ion battery, serves two major purposes: power to start the engine; and as the standby electrical-power source in the event of the loss of electricalgeneration capability – a failed engine-driven alternator or generator. Power to recharge the battery and to run radios and instruments is routed to a main-electrical-system bus and through protective breakers or fuses to the various devices powered by the electrical system. Lose generating power and the load shifts automatically to the main-ship battery. In the era with split analog flight-instrument power, the main-ship battery provides power sufficient to run a radio, a navigator and transponder, and, typically, the turn coordinator.

As noted before, the flow of air or air pressure spins the two remaining gyro flight instruments, the AI and the DG, also known as a gyro compass. Electrical power became a morecritical issue in light aircraft when EFIS cockpits with electronic displays began to displace analog panels. Go to glass from spinning-mass gyro instruments and the FAA wants aircraft to employ an alternative: either an alternative, stand-alone instrument with its own independent power source or a second source of power to keep the EFIS components functioning after losing main-ship power. In place of spinning-mass gyroscopes and hollow-tube analog air-data gauges, these panels employ devices known as MEMS, or micro-electro-mechanical systems - basically, a miniaturized mechanical and electro-mechanical sensor capable of sensing motion and pressure. MEMS provide the air- and attitude-data sensing found in modern primary flight displays via the AHRS, or attitude and heading reference system. By orienting MEMS sensors differently, the AHRS senses movement in three axes, providing attitude information on roll, pitch and yaw. ADAHARS, or air data and attitude heading reference system, add air-data measurements to the mix to display airspeed, altitude, and rate of climb or descent in addition to the attitude indications. The sensors and computer chips convert sensor output into information displayed in screens. And all components in this process, from MEMS to PFD and multifunction displays all require electricity - hence the increased emphasis on electrical-power continuity. The FAA published two advisory circulars that cover the subject: AC 23.1311-1C Installation of Electronic Display in Part 23 Airplanes; and AC 23-17C, Systems and Equipment Guide for Certification of Part 23 Airplanes and Airships.
The standards per the FAA Just as options exist to retrofit existing aircraft with glass and digital components in place of their analog avionics stacks, options exist to enhance electrical systems and improve standby capabilities. And what we discuss here centers on what's necessary for Part 91 operations of Part 23 aircraft. Part 23 aircraft used in Part 135 charter ops face a higher bar. Part 23, § 23.1353(h) requires that: “In the event of a complete loss of the primary electrical power-generating system, the battery must be capable of providing at least 30 minutes of electrical power to those loads that are essential to a continued safe flight and landing. The 30-minute time period includes the time needed for the pilots to recognize the loss of generated power and take appropriate load-shedding action.” Part 135 operations flown in Part 23 aircraft requires that single-engine aircraft have:
8
AVIONICS | PRODUCTS | NEWS
1. Two independent electrical power-generating sources, with each able to supply all probable combinations of continuous inflight electrical loads for required instruments and equipment; or 2. I n addition to the primary electrical power-generating source, a standby battery or an alternate source of electric power that is capable of supplying 150 percent of the electrical loads of all required instruments and equipment necessary for safe emergency operation of the aircraft for at least one hour. For the pilot operating under Part 91, though, the minimum is seldom enough. And that battery capable of “providing at least 30 minutes of electrical power to those loads that are essential to a continued safe flight and landing” in an analogpaneled aircraft probably won't make that 30 minutes driving the higher electrical demand of an all-glass, all-electrical panel. Consider these approaches to assuring power for allelectrical aircraft.
THE GOLD STANDARD: STAND-ALONE STANDBY ELECTRICAL POWER Original equipment manufacturers offered dual alternators and, in some cases, dual batteries going back decades, years before anyone in general aviation uttered the words “primary flight display.” With digital cockpits the dominant standard in today's factorynew aircraft, electrical power redundancy has become more common. The catalyst? The need for redundancy to power allglass instrument panels. You'll find dual-electrical systems like this as standard on many factory airplanes with EFIS cockpits: Beechcraft G36 Bonanzas and G58 Baron twins; Cirrus Aircraft SR20 and SR22 models; current production Mooneys; even the modest Cessna singles, the 172,182 and 206 sport dual buses. Many of these sport dual everything: alternators, to produce electrical power; batteries and regulators, to control the output and sharing of power from the two alternators; and dual buses. For glass-panel aircraft lacking these capabilities, avenues exist for some aircraft to add them. Depending on the airframe, supplemental type certificates may provide the path to adding a second alternator and a regulator capable of handling both the main and second generating source. Several vendors offer packages that add a standby alternator, some driven off the engine accessory drive normally used to power the now-unneeded suction or pressure pump, along with the regulator capable of controlling both - including
picking up the load when the main alternator fails.
standby battery products capable of powering many panels, as well.
B&C Specialty Products offers standby alternator packages for many popular aircraft, including a regulator capable of handling the changeover. Both belt-driven and gear-driven options are available, and the company holds STCs for many popular aircraft. B&C also holds STCs and offers kits to fit its standby alternator systems in various aircraft, among them the Beechcraft Bonanza, Cessna 210 and Piper PA32.
Operators of experimental aircraft enjoy many more options for standby power from most of the vendors supplying IFReligible glass-panel components - Dynon and Garmin among them. Avionics with integral standby power provide a largely seamless changeover to the battery, requiring no action on the part of the pilot, along with an indication of the changeover.
Basic Aircraft Products also offers STCs for its ram-air turbinepowered standby alternators for several airframes. In essence, the ram-air turbine pops out where airflow through turbine blades drives an alternator.
As attractive as these options may be, however, they don't provide power to other avionics in the stack, such as VHF communications and navigation radios or GPS navigators and transponders.
Fourteen-volt systems available from BAP include most Aeronca models, short-wing Pipers through the Super Cub, Taylorcraft BC 12-D, the Luscombe 8 series and Boeing Stearman.
PRESERVING POWER FOR THE FULL PANEL
Another avenue for adding alternate electrical power involves using the field approval approach to add a second bus and a standby battery. But other avenues exist to assure power continues to flow to digital panels.
EFIS with integral standby power In many instances, avionics manufacturers offer integral standby power in or for today's modem EFIS gear.
A second alternator and/or battery offers the best option for keeping the entire panel powered in the event of a total electrical-system failure. Maintaining glass PFDs is critical; but in an emergency, retaining the ability to navigate and communicate with air traffic control hold equal importance. And it's here where some adjustment to power buses may be necessary. For example, some aircraft with standby power as standard employ a second standby bus that powers a reduced amount of equipment to keep the load within the limits of the standby alternator.
Avidyne, Aspen Avionics, Dynon and Garmin offer the option of a standby battery for their systems.
That option should be considered as a must when adding a standby alternator with lower output than the main alternator.
For example, Aspen's Evolution line of PFDs and MFDs come standard with both a standby battery and a GPS navigation receiver. For VFR-only pilots, Aspen's certified VFR PFD offers an inexpensive path to adding modern solid-state indications for the entire six-pack of analog flight instruments in a standard panel for about $4,000 plus installation. And that includes the standby battery and GPS.
And it's here where it's advantageous to consider opting for all the standby battery options of the digital panel components as well as a standby alternator. With all the PFDs and MFDs capable of running on their own internal batteries, the power from the standby alternator can be dedicated to powering the other avionics - particularly the transponder, ADS-B gear, a GPS and a comm radio.
Aspen's higher IFR-approved PFD and its line of MFDs also include the standby features as standard - and the battery satisfies the regulatory requirement for that instrument.
Of course, matching main-ship power to the higher electrical demands of an all-glass cockpit is fundamental to upgrading to EFIS panels. Likewise, managing the load carried by standby systems is equally necessary to avoid exceeding the capabilities of the altemative-electrical-power system and possibly bringing on a second power loss.
Garmin offers the option of a standby battery for both its new G600 TXi and G500 TXi PFDs, also satisfying the emergencypower requirement. Ditto for Garmin's G5 instrument, which is approved as a replacement attitude indicator and, in a second unit, a DG and HSI - with a GPS interface as an option. The G5 can be equipped with its own integral standby battery to keep the units working for more than two hours in the event of the loss of main- ship power.
For the pilot facing an in-flight power loss, this goes a long way to assuring the flyer must face only one emergency at a time.
And Dynon's new systems for certificated aircraft also have the option of standby power. Mid-Continent Instruments' True Blue Power division offers

The company debuted its latest advancement in the Fly by Sight flight deck concept at the 2019 NBAA Convention, a package which combines UA's Fly By Sight navigation system, itself a combination of the company's ClearVision SkyLens headwearable display and the company's recently unveiled Interactive FMS, or i-FMS.

This is the next generation in UA's drive to expand head-up operations, augmenting the real world through head-up technologies with line-of-sight (head-tracking) functionality that pilots can use to accomplish highly demanding tasks during critical phases of flight. “We believe the future of flying should be simplified, automated, and more intuitive, utilizing new avionics techno-
logies and systems," said CEO Dror Yahay. "At NBAA, we are demonstrating how integration between the FMS and a wearable HUD like the SkyLens can greatly improve the way pilots fly – reducing workload while maintaining high efficiency and heightened situational awareness." This expansion of read-up flying uses sensors monitoring the point of attention of the pilot's eyes and a click-to-activate input that does not require the pilot to look down at anything. The i-FMS is a software-based FMS designed on a flexible and open architecture system that can be hosted on a variety of hardware platforms. It enables new concepts in human-machine interface such as augmenting head-down displays with ClearVision head-up displays and head-wearable displays, allowing pilots to fly by sight. Designed and built from the ground-up by Universal Avionics, a pioneer in FMS systems, the i-FMS tackles one of the main challenges pilots face today with FMS operations: the need to propose changes to the FMS during critical phases of flight such as takeoff and landing.
Normally, pilots are required to shift their attention from outside the cockpit window to the FMS display unit during these phases of flight, all to enter new data into the FMS and then validate that changes are correct —requiring last-minute updates and significant head-down operations. The i-FMS allows pilots to project waypoints and information from the FMS onto the real-world, superimposed on UA's HUD or SkyLens HWD. This reporter sampled the combination at last year's NBAA Convention in Orlando, and it worked as advertised, allowing the pilot to select approaches, radio frequencies and more, then confirm and enter the info into the FMS with a button click. When combined with the company's multispectral vision sensor, the views from an enhanced-vision sensor appears on the SkyLens view, as does the output from a synthetic-vision system program — visible and accurate no matter where the pilot looks. The combination proves a helpful tool for night and instrument approaches.
True Blue Power's new fifth-generation lithium-ion batteries
The Wichita-based company, a unit of Mid-Continent Instrument Co. Inc., unveiled its fifth-generation lithiumion main-ship battery line, approved and used by Textron Aviation in the company's new Citation Longitude. Todd Winter, True Blue Power president, noted that two of the new batteries are among the 10 True Blue products flying on the new jet. Among the items from True Blue are two DC-to-DC voltage converters, six DC-to-AC inverters and two of the newly approved intelligent batteries. The lightweight batteries, two 11344 44-amp-hour models, arc but one model of True Blue's proprietary lithium-ion batteries. The TB44s each weigh a mere 51.7 pounds.
At 600%o lighter than the batteries they replace, thc11344s contribute to a weight reduction of 60 pounds, increasing the payload capacity and increasing the aircraft's cruising speed. All the new batteries sport an integral battery-check display and require no recurrent maintenance, cutting maintenance costs by 90% in addition to their higher cranking power, faster recovery time and quicker recharging.

ADS-B Out Findings: FID, Filed Callsign, and Flying Non-Functional ADS-B Out Systems Paul Damschen UA Senior Test Pilot / DER
As operators settle into the world of Automatic Dependent SurveillanceBroadcast (ADS-B) Out, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is taking a close look at how associated changes are affecting the industry and air traffic.

AVIONICS | PRODUCTS | NEWS
A recent FAA 'Equip 2020' industry meeting presented two areas of significant interest: 1. 1.The mismatch of Flight ID (FID) and filed Callsign. 2. How to deal with the need to fly an airplane with non-functional ADS-B Out systems in light of the new airspace requirements.
Flight ID (FID) and Filed Callsign The FID issue has been with operators as a teething pain for several months now. Some avionics systems have a fairly complex method of modifying or changing the FID. However, it is imperative that flight crews understand how this is accomplished and verify the FID prior to dispatch. To be clear on FID requirements:
Paul Damschen is a Universal Avionics Senior Test Pilot and an FAA Designated Engineering Representative. He has several thousand hours of developmental flight test experience on over 80 make and model aircraft on many systems and aircraft modifications.
Part 91 Operators: FID is your tail number (N1234A for example) Part 135/121 Operators: FID is your dispatch Callsign for that flight (AA1234 etc.) Failure to check the FID and get it wrong will grab the attention of Air Traffic Control (ATC). In the event the FID has been entered incorrectly for any reason, be sure to correct it immediately just as if it were an incorrect squawk code. Also, avoid confusing your four-digit squawk code with the FID; they're not the same and are two distinctly different pieces of data on the ATC side. Please be aware: as of this writing, a significant number of FID errors are caused by ATC coding. Therefore, be sure to know your filed Callsign and don't just assume it's your error.
Flying with Non-functional ADS-B Out Systems The vast majority of ADS-B Out systems in the market are driven by a Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) GPS such as the UA SBAS-Flight Management Systems (FMS). These systems have the ability to function as primary navigation systems with internal capabilities for determination of both accuracy and integrity of the airplane's GPS position. Some systems, however, are lacking the ability for SBAS correction (usually those referred to as TSO C129 GPS instead of TSO C146 WAAS/SBAS ), requiring an adequate Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM) prediction for the route of flight. This must be accomplished online using the FAA Service Availability Prediction Tool (SAPT), which can be found here. Note: SBAS GPS systems DO NOT have to use this tool. If your FMS GPS system qualifies for Technical Standard Order (TSO) C146 or C145, you can avoid using SAPT. If you are required to use this tool, be sure to know three key pieces of data:
! GPS engine TSO certification level (TSO C129 or C196) ! System mask angle (either 2 or 5 degrees) ! If the system uses baro-aiding The information above should be available in the aircraft operator's manuals, Approved Flight Manual Supplements (AFMS), or Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM). All three pieces of information need to be entered correctly into SAPT to generate an accurate calculation for dispatch.
On the same page as SAPT, there's another tool called ADAPT, or ADS-B Deviation Authorization Pre-Flight Tool. With ADAPT, you can fill out the necessary information and hopefully obtain authorization to conduct the flight. Note: Allowances for nonADS-B Out functional flights is entirely at the discretion of ATC. Here's a tip: if you have an unsatisfactory result, try calculating RAIM +/- a half hour or so and view the results – it may eliminate the issue. There is a RAIM summary page available as well for a comprehensive view of the coverage (again, you'll need to know if your system uses baro-aiding).
What Are the FAA's Next Steps? As the dust settles and flight crews complete their transition to an ADS-B Out operating environment, the FAA has several steps they wish to take: 1. Reduce the number of ground based navaids by about 50%. 2.Reduce radar sites, referred to as “radar divestiture.” 3. Develop ADS-B In functions using ADS-B In traffic data for use as a traffic management tool. For example, “AA1234 cleared for the visual following AA5678 at your twelve o'clock position, five miles.” With ADS-B In, you'll be able to accomplish this task with the electronic ADS-B In data in the cockpit. For international operators, ADS-B is coming to remote airspaces near you. ADS-B Out transmissions can be “heard” by satellites overhead and can be transmitted to ATC. For many remote areas with inadequate surveillance, FAA and other ATC's around the world are moving forward with plans to require ADS-B Out in those spaces to support the surveillance requirements there. Failing to have ADS-B Out in those airspaces will require a major reroute to your flight plan. We'll talk about this more in the future as it progresses.
Stimulus Programs Available Many aircraft that do not have ADS-B Out equipage have been grounded until modifications can take place. With the slowdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we're seeing an opportunity for those aircraft to get into the shop and become compliant. UA is currently working in concert with its Authorized Dealer / Integrator network to offer highly competitive incentives for upgrading now through August 31, 2020. Uniquely crafted for your aircraft, UA's Stimulus Programs are designed to work with your budget.
What happens if SAPT says there's no adequate coverage for the route of flight?

while hand-flying. The stability provided by the GFC 600H system offers significant workload reduction and greatly benefits helicopter operators by maintaining a commanded attitude. Designed with the pilot in mind, its cyclic-mounted trim controls allow for seamless interactions without taking a hand off the helicopter flight controls during basic operations, including system initialization of ATT mode, adjustments of the pitch and roll trim, and much more. While flying with ATT, pilots can easily "fly through" the flight control inputs for smooth maneuvers beyond the preset trim condition. Hover assist mode is capable of automatically detecting a hover condition and provides flight control inputs to help maintain position over the ground. With yaw axis control, the GFC 600H will also hold heading while in a hover.
In addition to hover assist mode, groundspeed hold (which requires a GTN or GTN Xi navigator) is also available and allows the pilot to input a forward or sideways command, which can be particularly useful during taxi and take-off. Garmin H-ESP helps the pilot remain within a safe flight envelope when hand-flying the helicopter. H-ESP works in all modes – even when the system is not engaged – and can be manually disabled should the pilot choose to do so. The GFC 600H also features a dedicated level mode that can be engaged by the pilot to return to straight-and-level flight, helping to avoid a potential loss-of-control scenario.
For example, in the event the pilot inadvertently enters the clouds, Garmin H-ESP can engage to assist in maintaining the helicopter in a safe flight attitude. For enroute and approach navigation, the system uses guidance from a compatible Garmin navigator, such as the GTN Xi series, to automatically fly approaches and search and rescue patterns (when enabled). Additional vertical and lateral modes include altitude hold, altitude select, vertical speed, indicated airspeed and heading select. The GFC 600H features a standard mark-width mode controller with push-button controls and a night vision goggle (NVG) compatible display. Its robust architecture allows the 3-axis configuration to provide the features and handling characteristics needed for a helicopter. Integrated "smart" servos provide pitch and roll inputs as commanded by the system, and the third servo and collective sensor provide yaw axis control capability and smooth flight control adjustments when the pilot moves the collective. Digitally controlled, high-torque servos allow for faster, crisper, more powerful response, which enables the GFC 600H to perform with smooth efficiency and advanced capability. With its extensive features and advanced technology, the GFC 600H offers unprecedented value at a competitive price in a flight control system for helicopters and is expected to begin shipping in late February. Garmin is now working closely with EASA to validate this FAA STC and hopes for a successful validation in the coming months. The GFC 600H is supported by Garmin's award-winning aviation product support team, which provides 24/7 worldwide technical and warranty support.
