WHAT MAKES THERAPY WORK?

Therapy is a collaborative process. Consequently, it is, completely, irrelevant how knowledgeable and aware a therapist may be for he/she still needs the active participation / cooperation / discipline of the client to be open to suggestions as well as follow through on work assignments. The development of the therapeutic alliance is essential to induce safety so that the client will not only disclose deep seated psychic material but follow thru on the Work!

Clients come into the therapist’s office or on virtual sites, wounded from the

importance of empathy but being genuine is just as important. When we, therapists, are genuine, we are modeling to the client that they, too, can be genuine. We are demonstrating, “that’s what we do here.” Perhaps the client has not felt safe anywhere else to do that. Nonetheless, “that’s what we do here.”

Indeed, the therapy cannot proceed until that “safe holding environment” has been created. Now, it is understandable that clients with a distrusting nature will not enter the therapy space and begin to disclose in an unguarded manner; however, as the client feels the therapist’s empathy and experiences him/her as an effective expressive truth sayer (in other words, a genuine Being, then the client, hopefully, will begin to share in a freeflowing manner.

The last element, unconditional positive regard, is just as important to the therapeutic success. For example, if a client is late, I will inquire: What occurred that created the challenge in getting here on time? Did you encounter traffic? Or if it was a virtual session, I may in some way affirm their busy schedule. which prohibited them from clicking in on the link.

Whatever intervention I utilize to address the lateness, my intention will be to relax the client into the knowing that I am glad they made it to session. When clients

thrust me into life’s ultimate challenge: survival. Needless to say, just about anything a client discloses, I will be able to engender empathy. Indeed, that it is the beauty, in being grounded in a Humanistic stance. I am a human, so I do not sit in the therapy room thinking or projecting that I am above it all. No, no, no. I am in this humanistic existential situation just like everybody else. I will not get out of it alive either.

There are innumerable interventions that a therapist can employ; however, that intervention that I find the most indispensable to the ongoing progress of a client hinges on the therapist's ability to accurately reflect their experiences. There is nothing quite like a client feeling seen and heard. Does the therapist genuinely demonstrate understanding of what the client has endured? Are they able to reflect the client's words accurately? Can they articulate the client's feelings?

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, I embraced the notion that my role as a therapist was crucial within society. In fact, during the pandemic, therapists were recognized as one of the top twenty secure professions. However, with the arrival of the Aquarian Age (every 2000 years marks a new Age) emerged technology, artificial intelligence, and in walk the bots.

NG THERAPIST WORKSHOP:

ES CARE OF THE THERAPIST?

Yes, therapist burnout is Real. Ask me how I know? When I experienced Burnout, all I was able to do was to lay in bed and pick up the phone. It was one of the most debilitating moments that I have experienced in my life. Burnout is beyond fatigue; it is an all-encompassing lethargy mentally, emotionally and physically. Allow us to employ the metaphor of fire that has burned down, where you only see a few sparks.

At present, it is incumbent upon me to hold the space for Professional Caregivers. Many of us, therapists, have families and elderly parents who also require our attention. At the end of the day who gives to the therapist?

Some of us are in our early career, some in the mid-career while I am in my late career. Nonetheless, let us all to come together in a bi-weekly time and space for three months to share what is on our hearts. We can talk about our personal selves, difficult cases as well as our dreams for the future. The goal is not to be perfect, only to be human.

I will not be teaching but, simply, will be holding the space. OMG! After having worked in (I have to look at the resume) innumerable social service agencies as Supervisor and Clinical Director, having had a prospering private practice, even having my own television show, I know the need of my People!!

So that each of us can be nurtured, the group will be limited to eight individuals. This will be a healing Group for the Healers. Interns are welcomed.

It will be reasonably priced as we are about the Healing, not the money. The entire 6 weeks will be $240. Early registration by will be $200.
