Therap s into th y p py Western phenomenon. It grew up in the West, in juxtaposition, to the world religions born in the East. Let it be known that none of the ten recognized religions originated in the West. And so it is, that the forefathers of psychology, Freud and Jung, envisioned therapists to be the spiritual teachers of the West.
Indeed, Psyche translates to mean “soul,” not mind. So, psychotherapy as it was, initially, designed was to be therapy for the soul. Oh Wow!! It is almost unsettling to witness how far psychotherapy has drifted from its root intention.
As therapists engage with insurance companies, it is paramount that they bill under an evidenced-based theory or payment will not be dispersed. Presently, the ruling theory is Cognitive/Behavioral, which, of course, has validity; yet, what about the Spirit? The Soul? Is there an equal emphasis on feelings/emotions or does this theoretical orientation, primarily, prescribe scripted tasks?
Allow us to highlight, lest it be forgotten, that we can live brain dead but not without the rhythmic beat of the heart-and that is a reality. How is it that we have, wholeheartedly, succumbed to a culture which has heralded the thinking process and exiled the heart? Indeed, what is so mentally/emotionally healthy about that?
