ThispostisabitdifferentonthisfirstdayofaNewYear,andnewdecade, althoughIdogointohealth,fitness,andnutritionaweebit.HereinIwantedto thinkoutloudaboutgettingthingsdonein2020(andbeyond).

Thispastyear,Iturned60,andaftermyinitialfreak-outpassedIsetouttomake my60thyearsomewhatofanadventure.Idon’twanttosquanderanyremaining years,andreally,nooneshouldatanyage.And,withallduemodesty,Iamnota newbiewhenitcomestodoinganumberofdumbthingsinmyfirst59years.

IdecidedtodowhatIcalled“Epic60.”Not thatIwasgoingtodo60things,butmore sowhateverIdidwouldbeepicformeto achievewhileturning60.AsIhavenot gottenthemalldoneinthetimeframeof oneyear,IthenthoughtIcouldrename thisendeavoras“EpicSixties.” Butthat soundedmorelikeatributealbumtoold rock-and-rollbands,andpotentially limitingorconfusing.Irealizedwiththe helpofmyfamilypointingouttomethat mostofwhatallIwanttodo,sodoothers, ofanyage.Let’srebrandto“EpicLiving” andwhatfollowshereinisonewayto approachsuch,andsometipsandideas thatmayresonateforyou.

SinceIwasateenagerI havebeencooking-upand doingabunchof challengingorinteresting things,ofwhichIkeepa runningtallythatcombines theto-dowiththe-done.I callmineTheListorLife Resume.

Ididtwochallenges,theGallon-a-dayChallengewhereinyoudrinkagallon ofwateradayforamonth,andtheproverbialwinter/polarbearchallenge.I shouldnoteherethatintheprocessofsomeactivities,youmayfindsome thatyouadopt(Ihaveverymuch,andprettyconsistentlyincreasedmy waterintake)andothersareone-and-done(Iwillneveragainjumpinto coldwaterinChicagolandinthewinteronpurpose).

Igottogoonthefloorofthe NewYorkStockExchangeforthe ringingoftheopeningbell,somethingI’vealwayswantedtodo,which coincidedwithbeinganearly-money-in-investorinacompanythathad IPO’d.BonuseswereseeingCNBC’spost,meetingsomeforthemarket makers,andthenclimbingtothetopofthethennewlyopenedVesseland HudsonYards.

Alongthoselines,IhavealwayswantedtogototheAnnualShareholders’ MeetingofBerkshireHathaway,andwithadaughtermajoringinfinance, nowseemedthetime.WewereabletogetpassesfromafriendandIhave tosayitwasahoot.FromthefolksontheflightfromChicagotoOmaha, whoallseemedtobegoingthereaswell,tothefunexhibitsandthejam packedstadiumfortheactualmeeting’squestionandanswerwithWarren andCharley,itdidnotdisappoint.Wewereluckyenoughtogetcloseto thedynamicduo.Goosebumps.

IdidwhatIbelievewillbemylastultra-distance,self-supportedrun.Itwasa 100Kmostlyonthewonderfultrailsnearwherewelive,whicharebothmercifully kindtomyjointsandallowforbeinginbathedinnature.(Intraining,beyondjust gettinginthemiles,Istoppedliftingweightsandsubstitutedonlybodyweight exercisesandcore,withtheonceaweekexceptionofakettlebellroutineIreally

Ithinkthiswillbemylast(andalsothe furthest)ultra-distancechallengefora numberofreasons.First,ittakesquitesometimetotrain,andwithwantingtodo otherthingsthereisanopportunitycost.Forme,whileIdorunwhentraveling, andverymuchenjoyitandfinditawonderfulwaytoexploreanewplace,doing afewmilesinthemorningisverydifferentthanloggingahalfmarathonand thentouring—orworse,sittingonaplane.Second,myfeetseemtosufferthe worst.Ihavedoneeverything—shoeandsockexperimentationandswaps,dust cloudsofpowder,mummylevelsoftape,moleskinandsuper-moleskinsecured withtinctureofbenzoinandevensuperglue.Third,andtomeabitsurprisingly, therewas“astudyinvolving52,600peoplefollowedforthreedecades,the runnersinthegrouphada19%lowerdeathratethannonrunners.Butamong therunningcohort,thosewhoranalot—morethan20to25milesaweek— lostthatmortalityadvantage.”Andfinally,whileIwillkeeprunning,Idofeela littlebitofbeen-there-done-thatwhenitcomestoultras.IknowI’msoslowas toneverbecompetitiveenoughtogetintoWesternStatesorBadWater,and beingcompetitivewasneverinthecardsformeregardless.Somynext experimentationwillbewithshorterdistances,and attempting tobeabitfaster (moreonthatlater).That’sprettymuchtheoppositeofmyapproachforthelast 20yearsofmyrunning.Accordingtomy23andMedata,I should begoodatit, geneticallyspeaking.Attheleast,byblistersshouldsubsideandIcanregrow mostofmytoenails.

IalsodidawackythingontheeveofmyEpic60VisionQuestasitwere,called Everestingor29029,anhomagetotheheightofEverest.JessieItzlerrentsa mountain(IdidVermont)andbuildsabasecampvillagewithbands,bonfires, glampingtents,foodanddrink,andyouhikeupitasmanytimesasyoucan,with thegoalofhittingacumulativetotalof29029feet.HethinksofitasBurning ManmeetsIronman.

This,likePolarBeardipping,wasaone-anddoneforme.But,itwasahoot.(Ialsolearned aboutandbecameapoweruseroftopicalDMSO(dimethylsulfoxide)creamas abaseandthenapplyingmagnesiumoilforpainandswellingwithakneeinjury Iwasdealingwithwhileonthemountain,andafter.Beawareofside-effectsand usesbeforeyouconsiderit,andgetprofessionalconsultationaswell.

I’malwaystweakingsupplementsinresponsetowhatI’mdoing,howI’m feelingandhowI’meating.

Lotsoffolks,from TimFerriss to DonaldLayman (ProfessorEmeritusof NutritionattheUniversityofIllinois),recommendconsumingatleast30 gramsofproteinforbreakfast.Ilikeitpost-morning-workout/recovery whenIreallyneedit.Getithoweveryouwish.Beingplant-basedmakesmy choiceslegumes,greens,nuts,andseedsmoresoontheweekendswhenI havemoretime,andapea,rice,orhempproteinshakeonweekdays.

Timerestrictedeating.WhenIwasmuchyoungerandmuchheavier (BMI=33),Ididafairamountoffasting.Asistruetothecliché,thebestdiet istheoneyoustickwith,thesedays,tofitinmylifestyle,Itrytopracticethe 16/8ProtocolinthatIdon’teatanything16hoursandwhateverIdoeat,I dosoduringtheother8.(Somesuggest14hoursoffastingforwomen.)It’s fairlyeasytofitintomostlifestylesandfolkscanfurthertweakbasedon goalsofweightlossandfitnessgainswithmealandworkouttiming.For me,asI’mnotabigbreakfastfan,Icanpushbackeatingtonoonor1PM mostdays(notall,yet).Thisgetsfutzedwithwhentraveling,holidays, events,etc.ofcourse,sojustdothebestyoucanmostofthetime.Also, here’sahelpfulpieceontimerestrictedeatingandcoffeeconsumption thatIfoundhelpful.
