he DPAC Rising Star Awards celebrates the performing arts in our schools by recognizing outstanding achievements in high school musical theater throughout central North Carolina. The program focuses attention on the meaningful work being done both on and off stage by dedicated teachers and students. As the regional qualifying event for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (NHSMTA), also known as The Jimmy Awards®, The DPAC Rising Star Awards brings together high school musical theater students from Durham, the Triangle and the surrounding region to perform and compete for a chance to represent DPAC in the national finals in New York City. THE DPAC RISING STAR AWARDS

The DPAC Rising Star Awards will take place at DPAC on Sunday, May 17, 2026. The event will feature twenty student finalists as they compete live for their chance to advance to the national level at the Jimmy Awards in New York City. Throughout the course of the evening, 17 awards will be presented recognizing excellence in a broad range of categories. Hosted by Clay Aiken and adjudicated live by a panel of esteemed judges, this event will not be one to miss. Last spring, DPAC named Carmen Sophia Dubon (Weaver Academy) and Josiah Jennings (Hillside High School) The DPAC Rising Star Awards’ Best Actress and Best Actor winners. Carmen and Josiah then went on to compete nationally at The Jimmy Awards®. This year, the national competition included a total of 110 nominees representing 55 Regional Awards Programs from across the country. Carmen and Josiah worked with Broadway professionals and made their Broadway debuts on Nederlander’s Minskoff Stage, where Disney’s The Lion King performs to sold out audiences nightly. Additionally, KoKo Thornton (Enloe High School) represented The DPAC Rising Star Awards on the national level this past spring. She was one of two teachers from across the country to receive the Inspiring Teacher Award during the Jimmy Awards in 2025. KoKo, Carmen, and Josiah represented DPAC and Central North Carolina exceptionally, and we cannot wait to see their bright futures. I’m writing this from my apartment in Brooklyn, just as we’re starting tour rehearsals. It’s a bittersweet moment, because after 10 years of writing and building this thing in workshop after workshop—and two full years after that of rehearsing various iterations of it (including the replacement cast for Broadway and West End productions) we are nearing the end of our journey with a project that has changed all our lives. The night before the Tonys, Daniel Aukin and I were loitering onstage at the Koch Theatre as part of a rehearsal for the broadcast—and just then it hit me, how absolutely crazy all of this was. I said, “At some point we need to go to a coffee shop or something and sit down and process what’s happened.” Daniel looked at me very pointedly. He said, “David, we will never be able to process this!” And we both broke out in peals of crazy laughter—because it was so hilariously true. As artists, our successes and failures are equally absurd. We are simply hostages to our impulses: we do what excites us and we try to make something we love. Everything else is outside of our control. This production is our labor of love. To accommodate the demands of a national tour, this version of Stereophonic has been edited down to just under 3 hours. We have affectionately dubbed this cut of the play “The Radio Edit” and it was both a challenge and a delight to pare the play down and get it even sharper and more focused. Help local students and seniors experience their first ever Broadway show

an’t use one or more of your season tickets for an upcoming show? Consider donating them to DPAC’s Discover Broadway program. As a Broadway at DPAC Member, you have the option to donate tickets you cannot use, preventing valuable seats from going to waste. Your generosity allows area youth and seniors the opportunity to experience their first Broadway show and discover the magic of live entertainment. This season, donated tickets are distributed to Durham Public Schools and the Durham Housing Authority.

It’s easy to help: •

If you know in advance that you cannot attend a show, or even if one member of your party will not be joining you, simply contact DPAC at DiscoverBroadway@dpacnc.com.

You will receive an acknowledgment from DPAC that your unused tickets will be transferred to an area student or senior.

•

DPAC will handle all other details and provide instructions to the recipient on how to access their tickets. 

PLEASE NOTE: Ticket donations must be made at least 72 hours prior to your scheduled performance date. Discover Broadway donations do not provide tax donation receipts.

At DPAC, we’re committed to Guest Courtesy. Please remember to be a good neighbor to those seated around you.

After the Performance Yes, the lobby gets busy and the parking lots can be tricky, but please remain at your seats until the house lights come up. As a courtesy to the performers and other audience members, DPAC asks that you do not rush for the exits prematurely at the end of the performance.

Entering and Exiting the Seating Area Please time your exits and reentry to the seating area to occur only at intermission or breaks between songs. This is a courtesy to other guests around you who will appreciate you keeping these disruptions to a minimum.

Kids at DPAC Please note that all guests require a ticket, regardless of age. Children under the age of 6 are not allowed at most DPAC performances, including Broadway, Concerts and Comedy shows. For some shows, DPAC will make recommendations on the appropriate minimum age based on the content and the length of the event. Parental discretion is always advised, and judgment of the appropriateness of the content for each show should be made on an individual basis prior to purchase. Children must be able to sit quietly in their own seat without disturbing other guests. As a further courtesy to our guests, DPAC recommends one parent or chaperone for every one child in attendance. It Can Wait Please save texting until AFTER the show. The light from phones is distracting to others throughout the theater. Please keep them turned off.

It’s Superstar Entertainment, Not a Food Fest Small snacks and drinks are welcome in the seating area, but as a courtesy to those around you, eat and drink as quietly as possible. Please know that odors and noisy wrappers can disturb others. We also ask that you finish sandwiches or other large food items before entering the seating area.

Photography / Video Recording Using Mobile Phones

At DPAC, each event that we host determines their own policy on photography and video recording using mobile phones. We enforce these policies at their direction. Please note that GoPros, tablets, and cameras of any kind are prohibited at all DPAC events. Photography and video recording using mobile phones is not permitted at all Broadway shows.

Quiet Please Once the show starts, please let the stage be the center

of attention. We ask that you turn off all cell phones and limit conversation. If children are attending this performance with you, please exit the theater immediately if they become restless or talkative. 

Kickstarting a career in performing arts management

PAC’s Performing Arts Ambassadors offer students unique, memorable, and impactful experiences that serve as a preview and a first step in preparing students for future careers in performing arts management. As part of the team at DPAC, Ambassadors shadow staff across multiple disciplines at DPAC including Marketing, Ticketing, Production, Audience Services and more. The experience continues for Ambassadors as they attend a wide variety of DPAC events, including Broadway, Concert, Comedy and Special Events plus have exclusive opportunities to go behind-the-scenes at some of DPAC’s biggest events. With an emphasis on content creation, Ambassadors receive media training and report on their experiences via videos, online blogs, and social media posts.
