Performing Arts Showstoppers at DPAC is a community program for area high school students who both love smiling and saying hello AND seeing DPAC’s biggest shows.
Throughout the season, Showstoppers gain real-world customer experience while welcoming guests with genuine and kind greetings as they arrive at DPAC for the very biggest shows on tour.
The Showstopper program offers students the following:
• Volunteer service hours for college-bound applications and resumes.
• Excellent customer service experience at one of the top five performing arts centers in America.
• Access to experience Broadway at DPAC’s hit shows and some incredible concert events.
• Invitation to "Theatre Talkbacks" with cast and crew from national Broadway tours.
• Plus, peer social gatherings with like-minded fans of the performing arts.
The inspiration for this program comes from the Durham Wayfinders at DPAC, a City of Durham volunteer program where members share their time and talents in the spirit of helping everyone feel welcome at DPAC.

The DPAC Rising Star Awards celebrates the performing arts in our schools by recognizing outstanding achievements in high school musical theater throughout central North Carolina. The program focuses attention on the meaningful work being done both on and off stage by dedicated teachers and students.
As the regional qualifying event for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (NHSMTA), also known as The Jimmy Awards®, The DPAC Rising Star Awards brings together high school musical theater students from Durham, the Triangle and the surrounding region to perform and compete for a chance to represent DPAC in the national finals in New York City.

The DPAC Rising Star Awards will take place at DPAC on Sunday, May 17, 2026. The event will feature twenty student finalists as they compete live for their chance to advance to the national level at the Jimmy Awards in New York City. Throughout the course of the evening, 17 awards will be presented recognizing excellence in a broad range of categories. Hosted by Clay Aiken and adjudicated live by a panel of esteemed judges, this event will not be one to miss.
Last spring, DPAC named Carmen Sophia Dubon (Weaver Academy) and Josiah Jennings (Hillside High School)
The DPAC Rising Star Awards’ Best Actress and Best Actor winners. Carmen and Josiah then went on to compete nationally at The Jimmy Awards®
This year, the national competition included a total of 110 nominees representing 55 Regional Awards Programs from across the country. Carmen and Josiah worked with Broadway professionals and made their Broadway debuts on Nederlander’s Minskoff Stage, where Disney’s The Lion King performs to sold out audiences nightly.
Additionally, KoKo Thornton (Enloe High School) represented The DPAC Rising Star Awards on the national level this past spring. She was one of two teachers from across the country to receive the Inspiring Teacher Award during the Jimmy Awards in 2025. KoKo, Carmen, and Josiah represented DPAC and Central North Carolina exceptionally, and we cannot wait to see their bright futures.

ANDY BLANKENBUEHLER (Choreographer) is a three-time Tony Award winner for his choreography in the Broadway productions of Bandstand, In the Heights and Hamilton, for which he also received London’s Olivier Award. Other Broadway credits include Bring It On, 9 to 5, The People in the Picture, The Apple Tree, Annie and the revival of Cats. Most recently he made his writing debut (co-writer Ted Malawer) with the world premiere of Only Gold, Off-Broadway at MCC (Lortel and Chita Rivera Award). Upcoming theater projects include the first Broadway revival of the Tony Award-winning musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, as well as The Secret of Santa Vittoria with writer John Weidman. Recently, Mr. Blankenbuehler’s work has been seen on the Emmy Award-winning FX series “Fosse/ Verdon,” as well as the Universal Studio film of the musical Cats. He made his concert debut with a piece entitled Remember Our Song for the Tulsa Ballet Company. He staged the 2022 Met Gala featuring Leslie Odom Jr. and Lenny Kravitz. As a performer, Mr. Blankenbuehler has danced on Broadway in Fosse, Contact, Man of La Mancha, Saturday Night Fever, Steel Pier, Big and Guys and Dolls. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Mr. Blankenbuehler resides in New York City, with his wife Elly and two children, Luca and Sofia. ALEX LACAMOIRE ( Orchestrations/CoArranger) is a Tony, Grammy, Emmy and Olivier award-winning orchestrator, music director, arranger and composer. He most recently served as the music supervisor and conductor for the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. His other credits include The Wrong Man (Off-Broadway), Bring It On, 9 to 5 (Drama Desk and Grammy noms), Wicked, Bat Boy and Godspell (2001 national tour). He also served as the executive music producer for many films, including The Greatest Showman, In the Heights, VIVO, Dear Evan Hansen and tick, tick… Boom! He is the winner of three Tony Awards for Best Orchestrations, four Grammy Awards (three for Best Musical Theater Album and one for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media), three Olivier Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Music and an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Direction on “Fosse/Verdon.” In 2019, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from his alma mater, Berklee College of Music. He and the Hamilton creative team were the recipients of a first-of-its-kind Kennedy Center Honors, as the “trailblazing creators of a transformative work that defies category,” a distinction never before awarded by the arts institution. In 2023, Lacamoire was named an Official Yamaha Artist. He currently resides in New York.
RON CHERNOW (Author of the book Alexander Hamilton) is the prize-winning, best-selling author of eight volumes and the recipient of the 2015 National Humanities Medal. His first book, The House of Morgan, won the National Book Award; Washington: A Life won the Pulitzer Prize for biography; and Alexander Hamilton—the inspiration for the musical—won the George Washington Book Prize. He is one of only three living biographers to have received the Gold Medal in Biography of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. A past president of PEN America, Chernow has received nine honorary doctorates. He resides on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

JEFFREY SELLER (Producer) is the winner of four Tony Awards for Best Musical: Hamilton (2016) and Rent (1996), both of which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; Avenue Q (2004); and In the Heights (2008). Sharing the Magic of Live Entertainment
DPAC’s Local Hero Spotlight made possible by Sport Durst Automotive Group recognizes those doing great things in service to their communities or families. Local Heroes receive a VIP night out at DPAC and in many cases, this night out provides an opportunity for those who have never been to DPAC to have their first-ever live theater experience.
DPAC rolls out the red carpet for Local Heroes by providing a VIP experience that includes premium seating to a select show, complimentary parking and admission to the Sport Durst President’s Club hospitality area. DPAC also shines a spotlight on the great work being done by all Local Heroes by featuring them on social media and on our website.

Help local students and seniors experience their first ever Broadway show
Can’t use one or more of your season tickets for an upcoming show? Consider donating them to DPAC’s Discover Broadway program.
As a Broadway at DPAC Member, you have the option to donate tickets you cannot use, preventing valuable seats from going to waste. Your generosity allows area youth and seniors the opportunity to experience their first Broadway show and discover the magic of live entertainment.
This season, donated tickets are distributed to Durham Public Schools and the Durham Housing Authority.
It’s easy to help:
• If you know in advance that you cannot attend a show, or even if one member of your party will not be joining you, simply contact DPAC at DiscoverBroadway@dpacnc.com.
• You will receive an acknowledgment from DPAC that your unused tickets will be transferred to an area student or senior.
• DPAC will handle all other details and provide instructions to the recipient on how to access their tickets.
PLEASE NOTE: Ticket donations must be made at least 72 hours prior to your scheduled performance date. Discover Broadway donations do not provide tax donation receipts.
At DPAC, we’re committed to Guest Courtesy. Please remember to be a good neighbor to those seated around you.
After the Performance Yes, the lobby gets busy and the parking lots can be tricky, but please remain at your seats until the house lights come up.
As a courtesy to the performers and other audience members, DPAC asks that you do not rush for the exits prematurely at the end of the performance.
Entering and Exiting the Seating Area Please time your exits and reentry to the seating area to occur only at intermission or breaks between songs. This is a courtesy to other guests around you who will appreciate you keeping these disruptions to a minimum.
Kids at DPAC Please note that all guests require a ticket, regardless of age. Children under the age of 6 are not allowed at most DPAC performances, including Broadway, Concerts and Comedy shows.
For some shows, DPAC will make recommendations on the appropriate minimum age based on the content and the length of the event. Parental discretion is always advised, and judgment of the appropriateness of the content for each show should be made on an individual basis prior to purchase.
Children must be able to sit quietly in their own seat without disturbing other guests. As a further courtesy to our guests, DPAC recommends one parent or chaperone for every one child in attendance.
It Can Wait Please save texting until AFTER the show. The light from phones is distracting to others throughout the theater. Please keep them turned off.
It’s Superstar Entertainment, Not a Food Fest Small snacks and drinks are welcome in the seating area, but as a courtesy to those around you, eat and drink as quietly as possible. Please know that odors and noisy wrappers can disturb others. We also ask that you finish sandwiches or other large food items before entering the seating area.
Photography / Video Recording Using Mobile Phones
At DPAC, each event that we host determines their own policy on photography and video recording using mobile phones. We enforce these policies at their direction.
Please note that GoPros, tablets, and cameras of any kind are prohibited at all DPAC events. Photography and video recording using mobile phones is not permitted at all Broadway shows.
Quiet Please Once the show starts, please let the stage be the center of attention. We ask that you turn off all cell phones and limit conversation. If children are attending this performance with you, please exit the theater immediately if they become restless or talkative.

Inspired by Durham’s great community leader MaryAnn Black, DPAC has reserved select seating, exclusively for Durham residents, military and students to most Broadway shows and select special events.
This program provides an opportunity for many to experience their first-ever live performance at a savings of 20% to 75%.

As part of the team at DPAC, Ambassadors shadow staff across multiple disciplines at DPAC including Marketing, Ticketing, Production, Audience Services and more.
The experience continues for Ambassadors as they attend a wide variety of DPAC events, including Broadway, Concert, Comedy and Special Events plus have exclusive opportunities to go behind-the-scenes at some of DPAC’s biggest events. With an emphasis on content creation, Ambassadors receive media training and report on their experiences via videos, online blogs, and social media posts.
