MY DOWNTOWN

with Mayor Sandie Walker, City of York

QWhen you think of Downtown York—not as Mayor, but as Sandie—what does it represent to you personally?

Downtown York represents growth, resilience, and possibility. It reflects how far we’ve come as a city, from a place I once visited out of routine to a destination full of energy, creativity, and community. To me, it’s personal. It’s a symbol of pride in where I’m from and a reminder of what’s possible when we invest in our people and our places. Downtown York represents connection, where residents, businesses, and visitors come together, and it embodies the vision of a city that continues to evolve, create opportunity, and build a future we can all be proud of.

QOf course, we’d have to stop by Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop for a sweet treat before making our way to Royal Square Mural Park to enjoy the art and energy of the space.

Then we’d head back toward Beaver Street to browse the variety of unique local shops. By then, we’d be ready for dinner, and depending on the mood, Downtown York offers a wide range of options, from international cuisine to soul food.

Do you have a favorite Downtown York memory or moment that still makes you smile?

As a former basketball player, one of my fondest memories is the 3-on-3 tournaments that used to take place on George Street. The entire community would come Downtown; it was a weekend filled with energy, competition, and family, and the support was always incredible.

QIf you had one afternoon to show a first-time visitor the “soul” of York, where would you take them—and what would you want them to feel?

We’d make it a full experience, moving, exploring, and supporting local along the way.

We’d start with a light lunch at Gather 256, a great place to ease into the day. From there, we’d head over to Ophelia Art Studio to support local artists and take in the creativity that defines our Downtown.

To wind down, we’d grab a cocktail and take in the sunset from the rooftop at the Yorktowne Hotel, and if they were staying the night, we’d drop them off at Grace Manor Bed & Breakfast to complete the full Downtown York experience.

QBig visions require big moves— what’s one bold idea or transformative change you’d love to see happen downtown?

The creation of a fully connected corridor that links key spaces from Penn Market to Mural Park in Royal Square District. QR codes or a digital map offering selfguided tours. Residents and visitors could explore at their own pace while intentionally supporting local businesses and turning movement through Downtown into a true experience.

QDowntowns are shaped by people— how can residents, business owners, and visitors help bring your vision for York to life?

My vision for Downtown York is rooted in what we collectively invest into it through our time, our energy, and our belief in what it can be.

Residents play a vital role by making Downtown part of their routine, from grabbing coffee to attending events, and supporting local businesses consistently.

Business owners help bring this vision to life by continuing to create experiences, collaborating with neighborhoods throughout the city, and contributing to a vibrant presence that draws people in.

Visitors are essential and can help by exploring intentionally, walking from place to place, discovering new spots, and sharing those experiences with others.

At the core of this vision is a shared mindset: seeing Downtown as ours. Taking pride in it, caring for it, and remaining open to new ideas and growth. When people feel a sense of ownership, they show up differently, and that’s where true transformation begins.

COLOR

COLOR AROUND EVERY CORNER COLOR AROUND EVERY CORNER

From cool blues and warm reds to earthy neutrals and bright metallics, Downtown York tells its story through color. Its art scene extends far beyond gallery walls, spilling into alleyways, courtyards, creative studios, murals, and public spaces throughout a few walkable blocks. Around nearly every corner, public art transforms the city into an open-air canvas with sculptures, decorative planters, and even artistic crosswalks.

Murals, galleries, and creative spaces painting Downtown York with personality and color.

There’s no better place to begin your color hunt than Downtown York’s thriving creative community spread across three distinct districts. Whether you’re a longtime local or first-time visitor, this guide highlights some of Downtown York’s most colorful and inspiring spaces to explore.

Begin your tour at Mural Park (108 S Howard St), one of Downtown York’s most colorful landmarks. More than a parking area, the space doubles as an outdoor gallery filled with large-scale murals and vibrant visual interest, making it the perfect first photo stop before exploring the Royal Square District.

Along King Street, you’ll find a variety of galleries and shops, including HIVE artspace Gallery & Studios (126 E King St), a cornerstone of Royal Square’s creative scene. Known for bold exhibitions and community-centered programming, the gallery regularly showcases contemporary local artists and immersive exhibits.

Creative York (10 N Beaver St), in the heart of the Market District, has long served as a hub for arts education, exhibitions, and community creativity in the city. The organization plays a major role in supporting artists while making art accessible to residents and visitors alike.

Also in Royal Square District:

Part studio and part collaborative space, Ophelia’s reflects the hands-on artistic energy that defines the neighborhood through workshops, installations, and approachable creative experiences.

Public art builds community pride, attracts visitors, and tells the stories that make your community unique.

The newly launched York County Public Art Toolkit, led by The Cultural Alliance of York County and the York County Economic Alliance, provides ready-to-use templates, step-by-step guidance, and practical advice designed specifically for small municipalities in York County. You do not need an arts background or a large staff. You just need to know where to start.

Just a block away at 256 W Philadelphia St, Gather 256 combines a café experience with rotating local artists, handcrafted gifts, and locally made goods. Curated with Care

For more than a decade, Indigo Bleu has blended fashion, home décor, candles, and community into one inviting destination.

restaurants, and historic anchors of the Market Street District, one boutique has quietly built a loyal following by doing things a little differently. Since opening its doors in July 2014, Indigo Bleu has become known for its ever-changing collection of clothing, home goods, gifts, and handcrafted candles, all thoughtfully curated to reflect the quaint and kind personality of owner Zarah Brooks.

For the York native behind the business, opening Downtown was never just about retail. It was about creating something meaningful for the community she grew up in. “I always loved fashion,” she says. “At the time, I felt there was a need to bring unique pieces to Downtown York.”

That idea still shapes the shop today. Visitors won’t find rows of repetitive quick trends or mass-produced styles. Instead, the boutique is filled with elevated, eclectic pieces that rotate with the seasons, from everyday wardrobe staples and handmade jewelry to cookbooks, pantry items, and colorful home accents.

“I’ve always loved clothing that feels unique – pieces you don’t see everyone else wearing.” she explains.

The store’s atmosphere reflects that same philosophy. Light, airy, and colorful, the space leans into soft coastal tones like buttery yellows, icy blues, and classic denim shades. Pops of color appear throughout the store, from clothing

displays to kitchen goods, creating a shopping experience that feels creative and inviting rather than overwhelming.

Cooking and entertaining have become an important part of the shop’s identity, with shelves stocked with specialty olive oils, salts, syrups, jams, and rotating pantry favorites chosen with care. Customers often stop in searching for gifts, whether for a friend who loves to cook, a family member, or even a wedding party gift.

Another signature part of the business is the candle collection, which Zarah creates herself using clean soy wax blends. What began as an extension of the shop quickly became one of its defining features.

“If you support the businesses around you, you’re helping to keep the community alive, connected and thriving.”

The original signature scent, Amber Mosswood and Tonka Bean, remains a customer favorite among a growing collection of fragrances.

“I’ve always loved candles,” she says. “Scents have a way of sparking memories and creating a feeling, so creating a line for the shop felt really personal and meaningful to me.”

While the merchandise draws people inside, it’s the sense of connection that keeps many customers returning. The owner speaks passionately about Downtown York’s business community and the collaborative energy among merchants. “We’re all in this together,” she says. “We’re all trying to keep downtown vibrant.”

That spirit of collaboration is something she actively contributes to. Supporting neighboring businesses, especially fellow women-owned shops, is something she sees as essential to downtown’s success.

“If you support the businesses around you, you’re helping to keep the community alive, connected and thriving.”

people feel comfortable,” she says. “I want people to walk out feeling confident.”

Today, after more than a decade in business, the shop continues to evolve. This year marks a new chapter as she balances entrepreneurship with motherhood while continuing to grow the business she’s built. Her goals for the future include expanding the candle line, introducing new brands, growing her customer base, and continuing to refine the shop experience.

Rooted in York. Inspired by the World.

How Chris and Danny Morgan transformed a storefront into Root & Relic - a retail experience built on character, community, and curiosity.

In a retail world often defined by convenience and cookie-cutter spaces, Chris and Danny Morgan wanted something different. They wanted character, community, and a place with a story to tell. For them, that place was Downtown York.

York natives, the Morgans returned home from Florida to open Root & Relic at the corner of Beaver and Philadelphia Streets. Inspired by their travels to Japan, a love of nature, and their hometown roots, the shop is designed to feel more like an experience than a traditional boutique - a carefully curated space centered on discovery, creativity, and connection.

When searching for the right location, the couple wasn’t simply looking for square footage. They were looking for a place that reflected their vision and values. “York has deep roots for us,” they shared. “Family is here. Generations are here. We knew the support would be here.”

"Everyone's been incredibly supportive. That sense of community is real here."
Chris Morgan

But their decision was also strategic. Positioned between larger markets like Philadelphia, Lancaster, and Maryland, they saw York as a city with growing momentum and untapped potential.

Their location at 57 N. Beaver Street first caught their attention through Downtown Inc’s Imagine the Possibilities campaign, which highlights vacant downtown properties and encourages entrepreneurs to envision what they could become. The campaign highlighted the 55K visitors the location had over the past year, while re-envisioning what the 1,700 square feet could become.

“When we first saw the space, even just in photos, we knew,” they recalled. “This was it.”

What others may have seen as an empty shell, the Morgans saw as a canvas.

Rather than choosing a predictable retail corridor or strip center, they intentionally sought out Downtown York because their concept demanded authenticity. “We needed character. We needed Downtown,” they said.

Now living a short walk from the shop, the Morgans have embraced the connected, walkable lifestyle that downtown offers. Their daily routine includes walking to work and seeing familiar faces along the way — small moments that have helped them feel rooted in the community.

Inspired by their time in Japan, with environments where nature and city life coexist, they see many of those same qualities reflected in York through the Codorus Creek, neighborhood energy, and growing trail connectivity.

One of the biggest surprises, they said, has been the support from fellow business owners and the welcoming atmosphere throughout downtown. “Everyone’s been incredibly supportive,” they shared. “That sense of community is real here.”

For entrepreneurs considering their next move, the Morgans have a clear message: “Get in now.” Unlike more saturated markets, Downtown York offers room to grow, experiment, and shape the future, not just fit into it.

As Root & Relic continues to grow, the Morgans hope to create more than just a retail destination. Their long-term vision includes immersive experiences, future expansion, and building a business that becomes part of Downtown York’s story for years to come.

At the center of it all is a phrase they use often in-store: “Take wonder with you.”

For Chris and Danny Morgan, that philosophy reflects both their business and their belief in Downtown York — a place full of possibility, creativity, and opportunity.

Downtown’s Coastal Cravings

Seafood dishes serving up the bold flavors and freshness of a beach getaway – no sand required.

You don’t need to pack up and head for the beach to enjoy great seafood. From freshly shucked oysters and jumbo lump crab cakes to globally inspired seafood dishes, the chefs of Downtown York’s restaurants and markets are making waves all season long.

Whether you’re craving something upscale, quick and refreshing on the go, or classic comfort food with a seafood twist, dive into Downtown York’s dining scene for a taste of summer.

At Roosevelt Tavern, the Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes are one of their signature year-round dishes. Packed with crab and paired with sweet corn flan, asparagus, and orange remoulade, the plate feels both coastal and elevated while still fitting perfectly into Downtown York’s historic WeCo District. Their menu includes other coastal standouts, like Crab Stuffed Gulf Shrimp and Seafood Fettuccine, featuring shrimp, lobster, and scallops.

Their name says it all, and their diverse menu lives up to it! At 2 Wild & Crabby Guys, their goal of serving quality food offering a fusion of land and sea flavors is demonstrated in their Seafood Taco Bowl, featuring blackened shrimp, crab cakes, peppers, onions, and lettuce over rice, in a fried tortilla bowl, served with spicy sour cream, taco, and cheese sauce. In addition to serving a variety of soups and their regular menu, they offer a rotating selection of specials like a Crabby Smash Burger, Seafood Chimichanga, and Crabby Crunch Wrap.

When it comes to fresh seafood Downtown, Rockfish Public House continues to lead the way. Their rotating raw bar features Fresh Oysters sourced from New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, and New York, including varieties like Big Rock, Blue Point, Chincoteague, Maryland local oysters, and Sapphire Shoals. Whether you order a simple Shuckin’ Sampler, a Shuck’n Tower, or go all in with the Mother Shucker, it’s one of the closest things to a coastal seafood experience you’ll find in Central Pennsylvania.

One of the Downtown’s hidden seafood favorites can be found inside Penn Market at Caraballo Sisters, serving a cold Seafood Salad loaded with penne noodles, real crab meat, shrimp, a creamy mayo-based dressing, and a secret ingredient. This salad has quickly become a customer favorite and is a refreshing and filling dish perfect for summer. Caraballo Sisters caters, meaning you can bring the dish to your next backyard gathering even if it’s not on the menu that day.

Plus, it’s just steps from The Green Bean Roasting Company, a longtime local favorite that’s been fueling the community for over 16 years. The park is also a few blocks away from Mural Park and all of the other exciting offers of the Royal Square District

A New Era of Self-Care Downtown

With a second location, Michelle Wright continues building Luxe and Mane into a space centered on care, confidence, and community.
By Marlena Schugt | BLOOM Program Manager

Before launching Luxe and Mane in 2015, Founder & CEO Michelle Wright began in the cosmetology industry searching for her place at a salon that felt just right. “I always knew I wanted to be in the business of taking care of people,” she said.

Over a decade later, Michelle Wright unveiled the second location of her growing beauty empire in Downtown York earlier this year. The newest location at 101 East Market Street features full salon services, a novel amenity in the city, and indulgent head spa experiences designed to detoxify and nourish from root to tip. The original 342 West Market Street location has developed the brand to distinguish itself as a premier braiding salon.

“I wanted something that was just for me. But I didn’t know that this was going to be a door to open up opportunities for many other people along the way,” said Michelle.

"I always knew I wanted to be in the business of taking care of people."
Michelle Wright, Founder and CEO

“And now I’m so happy that I have these spaces to be able to open the door and be a blessing to them so they can flow freely in their gifts.”

Michelle’s committed stylists, incredibly supportive friends and family, and an unwavering community in Downtown York are credited with seeing her through the launch of the second location. “I’m grateful I truly have people who rally behind me to push me because they know this is my purpose.”

When discussing her expansion plans with her team of stylists, they shared a resonating, “I’m going where you’re going” that guided her decision to keep the original Luxe and Mane location as well, now led by expert braider & stylist, Krislyn.

With Krislyn managing the braiding salon on West Market Street, Michelle has been able to focus her time a few blocks down on East Market Street curating a space with an aura so serene, you feel the luxuriousness before you even step through the door.

And by leveraging resources from YCEA’s BLOOM Business Empowerment Center, such as capital opportunities, small business education classes, and connections to the local entrepreneurial support network, Michelle has been able to follow her passion in a place that quite literally came to her in a dream.

Luxe and Mane’s growth has continued as they have enhanced their special occasion services, made in demand by the salon’s proximity to The Yorktowne Hotel. “The Downtown area is blooming,” Michelle stated. “We have people coming in from all different states, and there’s a perfect opportunity for me to fill the need in a prime location for people looking to get a good service away from home.”

And while attracting new clients is certainly part of Michelle’s growth strategy, she is incredibly grateful for the clients she has met over the years who return to Michelle’s chairs again and again. “Honestly, this is great for me, but this is something I wanted to do for (my clients) as well.

Connecting with so many beautiful people has really kept me going,” she said. “They deserve to come to a place to sit back, relax, unwind, and just feel at home.”
