Mulch Makers Report Strong Start to Season

ollowing a weather-challenged 2018, mulch manufacturers in the Southern U.S. say 2019 has gotten off to a strong start. With better cooperation from the weather, most producers contacted by Soil & Mulch Producer News said they expect improved markets and increased production this year. “Orders are coming in good and early,” said Robert LaGasse, executive director of the Mulch & Soil Council (MSC). “It’s an initial appearance of a good season.” Gina McLean, of Penick Organics, Macon, Miss., agreed. “Sales are already strong and the weather hasn’t really been that good,” McLean said. “We’re expecting strong sales to continue this year. We really didn’t have a fall season. It was really hot, then it was cold and wet, and I think there is a lot of pent up demand because of that. We say in the south that when the temperature is over 90 degrees people don’t put mulch out, and we had a really late hot season. We never had any cool, nice days in the fall.”

ccording to an industry survey conducted A by Soil & Mulch Producer News in early February, many mulch manufacturers experienced significant reductions in bulk sales in 2018 compared to 2017. Poor weather was generally cited as the main reason. Of the producers who responded, 38 percent reported lower bulk sales in 2018 compared to 2017; 44 percent reported an increase in bulk sales, and 18 percent reported that sales were about the same as in 2017. Of those who reported an increase in bulk sales, the average increase was only about 4 percent. Sales of bagged products performed somewhat better. Fifty-eight percent of respondents said bagged product sales improved in 2018 compared to 2017, while only 17 percent said sales dropped. A quarter of the respondents reported flat sales. The average improvement among respondents was 6 percent.

Mulch producers indicate they expect better sales this year than in 2018, with more optimism shown for bagged products than bulk. Of the survey participants, 47 percent said they anticipate at least a marginal increase in bulk product sales in 2019, while 40 percent expect sales to be about the same. Only 13 percent anticipate lower bulk sales this year. For bagged products, however, not a single respondent said that they anticipate lower sales. Almost two-thirds (64 percent) said they expect better sales of bagged products, while 36 percent expect sales to be about the same as last year. “It will stay consistent just like the past several years,” said Josh Posey, of Buckeye Resources Inc., Springfield, Ohio. “Bag products will go up and bulk will continue to go down.” Jenni Saucier, of Landscaper’s Pride, Huntsville, Tex., said demand from growers for her company’s bulk mulch has been strong, but movement to retail outlets has been slow. “The season will start early and be very good for bagged products,” Saucier said. “Our Potting Mix, Premium Rose Mix and Gardener’s Magic are hot.” Jack Kemble, of Kemble Inc., Duluth, Minn., is counting on a strong mulch market to redefine his business, which has manufactured

biomass fuel from landscape waste for 14 years. “I’m on my way home from Kentucky, where I just picked up a new mulch colorant injection machine,” Kemble said, while being interviewed for this article. “We’re just getting into the mulch coloring business because they’ve closed most of the plants that burn biomass. The biomass market is done where I am. There is only one place left to bring it. We used to deliver nine semi loads a day and now we bring them 10 a year.” Kemble, who said he expects to start grinding in April, said he is optimistic about his prospects in the mulch business. “I think it’s going to be really good,” he said. “People are landscaping more, so I think the market for natural mulch is going to be good, and in our area I am the closest producer in 100 miles. I just got a phone call today from somebody asking about new mulch sales. My product will go wholesale to nurseries and landscape supply companies, and I’ll sell some direct to landscapers.” About 300 miles away, in Waupaca, Wisc., Eric Laszewski, of Waupaca Northwoods LLC, said, “Colored mulch continues to increase. There is no sign that this will stop.” Continued on page 3

Correction Issued for Ocean Temperature Paper A significant error led researchers to issue a correction to estimates of global ocean warming published in the journal Nature.

esearchers with the University of California at San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Princeton University issued a correction to their widely publicized study which had raised fears of a rapid increase in the Earth’s temperature. The study published in Nature on October 31 claimed ocean temperatures have risen roughly 60 percent more than the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has estimated. Independent climate researcher Nicholas Lewis discovered significant methodological flaws in the paper. The authors admitted their error after Lewis and others publicized his findings.

Real Data vs. Proxy Estimates

cean temperature data comes largely from the Argo array of robotic O devices that record actual temperatures at different depths in the world’s oceans. Argo was started in 2000. Rejecting the Argo data as covering too short a time, Ralph Keeling, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Laure Resplandy of Princeton calculated temperatures based on the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide rising off the ocean, by filling round glass flasks with air collected at research stations around the globe. A recent IPCC report estimated net greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced 45 percent below 2010 levels by 2030 and zeroed out by 2050 to keep warming from exceeding 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, which it claims would result in dangerous climate changes. Based on their proxy temperature calculations, Keeling and Resplandy estimated emissions cuts would have to be 25 percent steeper than IPCC estimated in the coming decades to avoid exceeding the two-degree cap.

Large Math Errors

ewis found the authors made mathematical errors overstated the L amount of ocean warming and understated the uncertainty of their projections. “[They used a] novel method to estimate heat uptake by the ocean over the period 1991 to 2016 and came up with an atypically high value,” Lewis wrote in his analysis. Keeling and Resplandy quickly acknowledged making the errors Lewis identified. “When we were confronted with his insight it became immediately clear there was an issue there,” Keeling told various news outlets. After correcting their mistake, Keeling and Resplandy found their margin of error was between 10 and 70 percent, making their ocean temperature estimates virtually worthless. “Our error margins are too big now to really weigh in on the precise amount of warming that’s going on in the ocean,” Keeling told the media. “We really muffed the error margins.”

his paper would almost certainly not have been published had it T said IPCC significantly overestimated global ocean temperatures, says David Legates, Ph.D., a professor of climatology at the University of Delaware and a policy advisor to The Heartland Institute. “I am confident a paper that calculated the ocean warming was 60 percent less than the IPCC and other research had estimated would not even have been published,” said Legates. “The fact they had a paper arguing the IPCC was substantially underestimating ocean temperature— in other words, the IPCC’s projections were ‘conservative,’ if you will, and the real figure was really 60 percent higher—was the impetus behind the paper being published. “Now, as it turns out, the results were flawed and the figures are only ‘in line’ with IPCC’s estimates, but the original stories are out there and no doubt journalists will cite the ‘first-run’ articles without the caveat the paper was flawed,” Legates said.

“One hundred and fifty miles would give a driver almost an hour of loading time and a couple hours of driving time,” he said. “That would be a distinct advantage in shipping.” Although MSC’s request was denied by FMCSA, LaGasse said the council plans to join with other green industry organizations to petition the administration for an exemption. “FMCSA that they were going to open a notice of proposed rulemaking to clarify the definition of agricultural commodities in January, but it was delayed by the government shutdown,” he said. “We’re waiting for them to publish a notice in the Federal Register so we can respond.” LaGasse added that Hours of Service rules are causing confusion throughout the trucking business. “The state transportation inspectors are angry at FMSCA because they have issued more than 50 variances,” LaGasse. “They’re having a hard time enforcing the law because every time they turn around there is another variance issued. When you have to keep issuing variances, it demonstrates how bad the law is.” Drivers also are unhappy with the new regulations. Announcing that the ELD mandate has “pushed them too far,” groups of truck drivers are threatening to shut down their engines on April 12. It’s unclear how many American truckers will participate in the trucker’s strike being called by such groups as Black Smoke Matters and Truckers Stand As One. According to Black Smoke Matters, which communicates primarily via Facebook, truckers are upset about the federal ELD mandate for interstate trucking, hours of service regulations, a lack of parking spaces and cybersecurity. “Truck drivers have taken issue with many regulations that they are required to follow,” Black Smoke Matters posted on its Facebook page. “However, the electronic logging device has pushed the American truck

drivers too far.” That group and others, like ELD or Me and Operation Black and Blue said meetings with FMCSA failed to resolve their issues. “The solution is to call for an industry-wide shutdown,” the group said. “This seems like a sensible idea because no one can force an individual to work. We, the American truck driver, have found that the FMCSA has made false claims in favor for regulations that force truck drivers of large commercial vehicles to use electronic logging devices and feel that is a common practice for the agency.” The level of support for an April 12 shutdown among the nation’s truck drivers is unclear. “Revamping the trucking regulations will help our industry, but it’s too late for this year,” LaGasse said, noting that half of the industry’s volume is shipped between March and May and 60 percent between March and June. “That’s roughly 10,000 trucks a day we need, and we have to compete with all of the vegetable farms in the south. Getting the agricultural commodity exemption in time for next year’s shipping season will help.”

Industry optimism

espite the challenges, with the majority of mulch producers surveyed D expecting better markets this year, there are strong signs of optimism in the mulch industry. “We’re always optimistic,” McLean said. “We love what we do and I think there is more interest in home gardens and landscaping. Pine Straw – A New Industry for North Carolina?

lizabethtown, NC — North Carolina’s longleaf pine tree has been beneficial to cattlemen, turpentine producers, loggers and health resorts throughout hundreds of years and now it may play an important economic role again, according to a BladenJournal report. A longleaf pine restoration effort has been underway in the state. In January, the North Carolina Forest Service sponsored a free two-day workshop intended to raise awareness about the longleaf pine, as well as, general timber management and prescribed (hazard reduction) woodland burning. Producing and selling pine straw for use as a light-weight mulching material has been a much-overlooked income stream for landowners. As pine needle mulch breaks down, which happens more slowly than wood mulch, it slightly acidifies the soil. Pine needles make an excellent landscaping mulch for acid-loving plants, trees and shrubs such as camellias, azaleas, hydrangeas, fuchsias, gardenias, ferns, dogwoods, magnolias, holly and evergreens. The North Carolina Longleaf Pine Coalition website discusses the value of the species, which not only provides an excellent habitat rich in diversity, but also can be like money in the bank. “Longleaf pine naturally grows straighter, tapers less, and produces a stronger, heavier wood than loblolly pine. Longleaf yields a higher number of poles and pilings whose value is 30-to-40 percent higher than sawtimber. Longleaf pine is commonly grown at harvest rotations of 60-to-80 years, but can grow past 150 years. This long life span allows landowners more time to plan thinning and wait for high timber prices. Longleaf pines respond well to release with increased growth at older ages and higher stand densities. Longleaf pine grows well on less fertile soils and can out compete loblolly pine on poor and average sites. Longleaf pine straw is a high-value landscaping mulch due to its longer length, attractive color, and decay resistance. Landowners can rake 75-to-100 bales per acre every two or three years and earn an extra $100-to-$200/acre depending on site quality and tree density.”

Residents Grapple with Vermont Food Waste Recycling Bind

As a result of a survey conducted last year with haulers and solid waste district managers, however, the DEC has sided with haulers who say the requirement to pick up food waste separately is a burden (they are blocked from itemizing the curbside services) and there won’t be sufficient food waste volume to cover their costs. Haulers would still be required to collect food waste from businesses and multi-unit apartments, unless they can demonstrate that another hauler is collecting in their pickup area. Validating this claim is a 2018 University of Vermont study found that the majority of citizens surveyed either compost at home or feed food waste to animals.

spoo, Finland — VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd has developed a new technique based on gasification, which offers a sustainable way to turn forest industry byproducts, such as bark, sawdust and forestry waste, into transport fuels and chemicals, according to a company statement. The new technique reduces carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 90 percent and production expense is less costly than fossil fuels. The approach uses gasification to turn biomass into intermediate products – liquid hydrocarbons, methanol or methane. More than half of the energy content is turned into transport fuels. Between 20 and 25 percent can be used to provide heating to communities or to produce steam for industrial processes, including forest industry plants. The new technique reduces carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 90 percent compared to fossil fuels. The intermediate products are processed further in oil refineries to make renewable fuels or chemicals. The process is based on VTT’s low-pressure, low-temperature steam gasification technology, simplified gas purification and small-scale industrial syntheses. The small-scale production approach, fueled with local waste, yields heat generated that can be used throughout the year. This is an improvement over previous gasification project plans that involved considerably larger gasification-based diesel plants where raw material could not have been sourced locally. The small-scale plants allow full use of the byproduct heat whereas large plant efficiency would have been 60 percent. In addition, the small-scale solution makes it easier to secure funding for building the first plant based on the new technology, a VTT scientist says. The project involved mapping out the path from pilot-scale development to demonstrations and commercializing the technology with participating businesses. E ve n i n t h e s h o r t t e r m , t h e u l t i m at e competitiveness of the new technique hinges on the prices of crude oil and carbon dioxide quotas as well as the taxation of renewable transport fuels. Gasification technology is projected to have huge potential for switching from reliance on fossil fuel to sustainable biofuel – in Finland and throughout Europe. Finland aims to reduce fossil fuel energy consumption so that 30 percent is supplied by sustainable sources. Gasification plants could be satisfying half of that from domestic waste from 5–10 locally integrated energy production plants. The 3.6 per cent target set for advanced biofuels in the European Commission’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED2) equates to 11 million tonnes of oil, which would mean approximately 200 gasification plants in Europe alone.

Wood Pulp Byproduct Proposed as Alternative Vehicle Fuel

Termites May Improve Dried-out Soils

und, Sweden — According to a Reuters report, a wood pulp byproduct could become an alternative fuel for internal combustion vehicles if it could be made in high enough quantities to make it affordable to motorists. At a pilot plant in Hulteberg, Sweden, a Lund University researcher has made a gasoline mixture from lignin that he considers “forest fuel.” Lignin is a thick black residue that comes from wood pulp and paper manufacturing and is an important polymer being studied for other energy production applications. Unlike other biofuels such as ethanol, made from crops also grown for food, lignin is made from manufacturing byproduct and is considered a more sustainable fuel. Also, ethanol (and methanol) fuels add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, making them less green, as well. The forest fuel will be available in service stations by 2021, the Lund researcher says. Though it will only serve a fraction of the demands of Swedish motorists, he is hopeful that, along with other renewable products under development, it can become a viable fossil fuel alternative. Last May, PHYS.org reported on lignin research being conducted at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics at Linköping University in Sweden. This group developed a fuel cell that uses the wood byproduct. Typically, fuel cells use hydrogen gas, most of which comes from nonsustainable sources. Lignin biopolymer consists of a large number of hydrocarbon chains woven together, which can be broken down in an industrial process to its energy-rich constituent parts, benzenediols. One of these, catechol, makes up seven percent of lignin. The LiU researchers found that catechol is an excellent fuel for use in fuel cells and when converted to electricity, it does not form carbon dioxide.

xperiments carried out on the tropical island of Borneo during a late 2015 and early 2016 El Niño period have shed light on how termites play a beneficial role in the projected increase in frequency and severity of droughts in tropical rainforests, according to paper published in Science. The study consisted of eight 2500-meter-sized plots in different areas of the rainforest floor. In four plots, the research team applied suppression methods including removal or leveling termite mounds. They then left poison baits to kill the remaining insects. In the other four plots, they did nothing to disturb the wood eating insects. The plots revealed the extent to which termites can actually protect and improve soil. For example, the scientists found that soil moisture measured at 5 centimeters in the intact termite mounds and nests increased during the drought. The moisture content was 36 percent higher in the undisturbed plots than in plots where termite activity was disrupted. The study showed that termites enhance ecosystem resistance to drought by bringing water closer to the surface. Seedlings of climbing vines transplanted into areas where termites remained active were 51 percent more likely to survive than those in areas without the insects. Because droughts are expected to occur more frequently in coming years as climate changes impact tropical regions, termites may play an increasingly important role in helping to maintain rainforest productivity and biodiversity, the researchers suggest.

Florida Timber Industry Could Take a Decade to Recover from Hurricane Michael

allahassee, FL — The Gainesville Sun reports that it could take a decade or more for Florida’s timber industry to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Michael. The Category 4 Hurricane that raged through Florida’s Panhandle, Alabama and Georgia has cost a total $15.1 billion. The monetary cost to the timber industry alone is about $1.3 billion, according to researchers with the Southern Research Station Forest Economics and Policy. To remedy ruinous financial burdens, Florida Forest Service Director Jim Karels has urged state Senators to consider providing millions of dollars in assistance to timber landowners in the Gulf region of the state hard hit by Hurricane Michael. Karels has recommended $20 million in relief to help pay for clearing and replanting work areas. Citing an immediate need to reduce wildfire threat, the state forestry chief also asked the committee to consider allocating nearly $9 million for equipment and programs. Karels said landowners in hard-hit areas will have to pay about $1,000 an acre to clear the debris from their land, which he says is worthless until cleared. An estimated 2.4 million logging trucks would be required to remove all of the dead trees, he told the lawmakers. According to a U.S. Forest Service website post, “In the past, state governments have taken steps to assist timber managers with salvage operations. Some examples include relaxing weight limits on roads; allowing logging trucks to carry heavier loads; permitting larger than normal log storage volumes at mills; and assisting private landowners and nongovernmental organizations with salvage planning.” The U.S. Forest Service is working closely with state foresters in Florida and Georgia to increase timber sale and salvage operations.

Scotland Biochar Project Aims at Environmental and Economic Gains

och Ness, Scotland — A project is underway in Scotland to use millions of tons of wood processing residue to make a biocharbased soil amendment instead of being sold as low-value mulch for horticulture, according to a Stackyard.com article. University of Edinburgh scientists are working with Britain’s Forest Research, a forestry and tree-related research organization, to plant thousands of trees near Loch Ness and use a phosphorus-rich wood waste byproduct, biochar. The team is applying the biochar around the trees to test its effectiveness in improving Scotland’s upland, nutrient poor soils. The team believes biochar could benefit forestry and the wider environment, potentially generating income while at the same time improving soils, reducing residue and storing carbon. Initial results show promise. Seedlings grown in soil amended with biochar have been found to be more effective at photosynthesis, capturing and using light, which is an indicator for overall tree health. The researchers say that biochar can be made from almost any type of dry biomass, including waste materials. Composed of highly-stable carbon, in addition to the phosphorus, biochar could become central to closed-loop resource management, that benefits the environment and Scotland’s £2 billion (~$2.6B USD) timber processing industry. andit Industries recently announced that it will offer select trommel screens and conveyor stackers manufactured by Poland-based company, Pronar, Sp. z o.o. The Model 60 GT-HD is capable of moving up to 600 tons of material per hour, and able to stack material nearly 40 feet high, creating piles of material without the need of an additional loader or operator. The stacker can be mounted on tracks, making it easy to move around a grinding yard quickly. The Model 7.24 GT is a track-mounted or towable trommel screen that has some of the highest throughput in the industry. This trommel is capable of screening a variety of materials, including compost, urban wood waste, and biomass. And operators can swap out the drum screens to meet a specific size requirement.
