Improving Soil Quality For Healthier Plants — Using Probiotics
Soil is more than brown dirt. It is a living breathing system, and like any living system can become unhealthy and susceptible to pests and disease. That’s where beneficial bacteria – or good bugs known as probiotics - come in. They restore balance in the soil, and in doing so, can enhance plant and soil health. We talked to Frank Reed, founder of Rhizosphere Solutions, about why probiotics are important for promoting soil health and soil sustainability.

R
hizosphere Solutions is a Louisville, TN based company outside of Knoxville. Frank Reed’s business partner has been manufacturing beneficial bacteria which they describe as ‘probiotic solutions for soil and plant health,’ for the past 3 years. Frank manages the agronomy side and his partner the microbiology. Why the interest in using beneficial bacteria for soil and plant health? “The use of commercial inputs is quick to solve a specific problem,” said Frank, adding, “But then they create other problems. I’ve always been on the side of moderation in the industry or maybe even leaning more toward the conservative side.” Frank has seen both sides of managing soil and plant health – using commercial inputs as well as natural solutions. “My family owned a fertilizer and pesticide manufacturing and application business,” he explains. “It was a very large operation. It started in ‘76 and it went through to the ‘80’s until the recession hit.”
What’s the Rhizosphere?
T
he rhizosphere is the area that surrounds a plant’s root system. “Within this area the plant roots co-exist with bacteria and other microorganisms,” explained Frank. “Bacteria have flagella that allow them to move towards the sugars produced by plant roots – a process known as Chemotaxis. In this mutually beneficial environment, the plants supply food in terms of sugars, and the bacteria in turn supply the plants with a nutrient-rich and aerated growing environment.” “This coexistence creates a symbiotic relationship that must exist within soil for healthy and sustainable plant growth,” he continued. “By improving the rhizosphere, soil fertility improves, nutrients become more available and plants can defend themselves against pests and disease. As a result, crop quality increases, crop yields improve, and the need for using commercial inputs is reduced. The benefits to humans, livestock and the environment is tremendous.”
Prevention is better than cure
W
ith his family background in the fertilizer and pesticide business, Frank realized that many of the products were being used as a temporary fix – like a BandAid – covering up but not addressing the real cause of the problem. “Prevention is obviously the best and most sustainable way to go about it,” Frank said passionately. “There have been a lot of repercussions from using fertilizers and pesticides, both agronomically, from a soil standpoint, to the environment and to human health. That exists even within my own family - from pesticides! So that’s why I’m doing what I’m doing, and it’s taken a very long time ... It’s taken the public pressure to force our industry to make a change.” “I’ve been in this industry for, let’s see, I guess it’s 36 years now,” Frank continued. “I majored in soil and plant science, my major was agronomy, I have a B.S. and a lot of knowledge Continued on page 3

Why add more bacteria to soil?
N
ot everyone supports a natural, probiotic approach. “There are industry authorities that state that soils have more than enough naturally occurring bacteria to maintain healthy growing conditions for plants,” said Frank. So why add more bacteria to the soil? “Repeated agronomic issues suggest that adding beneficial bacteria is necessary,” said Frank. “Despite applying commercial products, so many growers face the same issues – year after year and decade after decade! They have spent countless dollars trying to resolve these issues that nature can fix.” “Over-working the soil and repeated use of pesticides and fertilizers have led to the decline of soil health and even resulted in soil death,” Frank added passionately. “This vicious cycle has been scientifically known for decades.” “We are not saying ‘Stop using commercial inputs’,” Frank emphasized. “We are saying, “Use them responsibly and only when necessary. Healthy soil produces healthy and profitable crops – while supplying growers with a sustainable growing environment, not just for today, but also into the future. We are the experts at remediating overworked and abused soils.”
are gram-negative bacteria reproduce sexually and gram-negative bacteria cannot tolerate any kind of fluctuation of environmental and climatic changes. They’re so fragile that when people buy them - and this is what’s prevalent in the industry right now - they either have to be refrigerated, they have to stay refrigerated from the time of manufacturing to the time of use, or the person has to culture them on their own prior to use and they are shipped in liquid form,” Frank continued. “Gram-positive is what my partner has a proprietary on, and they reproduce asexually. They call it ‘binary fission’ and it’s a form of asexual reproduction, which produces offspring identical to the parent. With gram-negative you never know what offspring you’re going get so they’re not true to type, but the gram-positive are true to type. They can withstand the most extreme environmental climatic changes,” said Frank. Continued on page 4

hizosphere Solutions supplies soil and plant health products to basic agricultural areas such as crops and vegetables, or anything that has to do with food production, or animal feed production. They also supply the turf grass, ornamental and compost industries. What makes their beneficial bacteria special? “Our product is made with a proprietary patentpending dry formula,” explained Frank. “The bacteria will live for five years. In a package.” “The proprietary process puts the bacteria into hibernation,” said Frank. “There are two types of bacteria out there. You have what they call ‘gram-positive’ bacteria, and then you have what they call ‘gram-negative.’ The differences

ll the beneficial bacteria supplied by Rhizosphere Solutions have been harvested from soils around the U.S. “Once they are identified, typed, and cultured, they are put into a cryogenic freezer,” explained Frank. “The bacteria are numbered because there are specific strains that we have found for specific things we want them to accomplish.” “For example, it could be to mitigate for nematodes, it could be for insects, it could be for diseases -- specific diseases-- it could be for nutrient processing in soil. It could be for composting or for natural bacteria control for Artillery Fungus on mulch. There are so many bacteria out there, and each one has its own specific function.”
Success stories
“W
ell, you know these products work, as far as nature goes, these products work very quickly,” said Frank. “I have a gentleman right now who used one of the products for algae control on golf course greens in the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida area. In ten days it was gone and the area which was bare on the golf course green had completely covered with grass. Nothing else was done to that turf!” “He used the product that was for soil mineralization and composting, and it had the ability to - put it this way, the bacteria contained fungal and chitin - they were fungal and chitin remediating bacteria, that’s what solved the problem,” he explained further.
“There was a high school football field in Broward County, FL,” said Frank describing another success story, “There were two commercial synthetic products that were being used by major companies on the outer sides, the left-outside and the right-outside of the football field, and ours was in a strip down the middle.” “There was hardly any turf-grass on the entire field. And, of course, they didn’t want to spray chemicals because you’ve got students playing on it, right? Practicing. But they used some of these products that were approved for that use, these big companies had gotten approved, but the one that stood out in two weeks was the bacteria that we had put down. The grass had gone from basically 25% coverage to 100% coverage! “There had been a weed present on the whole field which is called Spurge, and when you see Spurge in Bermuda grass in the south, it generally indicates that there is a nematode problem in the soil,” said Frank. “So, with one application of our probiotic product, the turf healed over and knitted together. It was beautiful! It stood out like a sore thumb and all the Spurge was gone! We didn’t play ‘Whack-A-Mole’ with the symptoms. Our specially formulated natural product mitigated for the actual problem, the real culprit! s part of an environmental spending bill, California’s Democratcontrolled legislature approved provisions forcing dairies and livestock producers to reduce methane emissions from manure 40 percent below 2013 levels by 2030. Low-income Californians suffer under some of the nation’s highest electricity, gasoline, and housing prices and taxes, and in the final hours of the state’s 2016 legislative session, which ended in September 30, the state’s Democrat-controlled legislature approved $900 million in additional spending on environmental programs. The bill signed by Gov. Jerry Brown (D) on September 19 included provisions forcing dairies and livestock producers to reduce methane emissions from manure 40 percent below 2013 levels by 2030. It also would force farmers to limit cow flatulence to the extent technology exists to reduce it. The bill provides $50 million to implement and enforce the agricultural methane limits and another $40 million to limit methane emissions from landfills.

ecause the prices of beef, cheese, and milk are likely to rise, state Sen. B Jeff Stone (R-Temecula) opposed the plan, telling Yahoo News the spending in the bill “goes to many Democrat pet projects … pursu[ing] long-term greenhouse gas reduction goals that will continue to harm families and jobs.” Continued on page 8

The effect California’s new methane law will likely have on the poor stinks, says E. Calvin Beisner, founder and national spokesman for the Cornwall Alliance. “This new regulation is sure to drive up costs for milk, illustrating the fact those who are on the global-warming-alarmist bandwagon simply do not take into consideration the impact their policies have upon the poor,” Beisner said. “The resulting increase in dairy and energy prices from California’s existing and new climate policies is going to hurt the poorest people in California the worst.”

Mohegan Tribe Enters Wood Pellet Business

issoula, MT — The Montana Wood Products Association (MWPA) is planning to salvage about 30,000 acres of forest damaged by last summer’s wildfires, reports WoodworkingNetwork.com. In 2017, wildfires affected 700,000 acres of Montana national forests. At a Missoula Area Chamber of Commerce event, a spokesperson for the forestry group discussed plans for harvesting dead, dying, and diseased timber, and cutting down hazardous trees along roadways, as well as planting tree seedlings. The activity would begin this summer once land accessibility and speed to market issues are hashed out. According to the MWPA website, Montana’s 18,981,723 acres of non-reserved commercial timberland is divided between public and private ownerships. The public owns 12,945,591 acres, and another 6,036,132 are privately owned. The state’s 22.5 million-acre forestland base includes 22.4 million acres of timberland, 85 percent of which is held in unreserved classifications, meaning it is available for harvest. About 60 percent of unreserved timber-some 11.4 million acres-is held in national forests.

rossville, AL — In a diversification move, the Connecticut-based Mohegan Tribe has established a new company to export wood pellets as fuel to plants that produce electricity worldwide, according to a NorwichBulletin.com article. Mohegan Renewable Energy recently acquired a 100,000-ton per year manufacturing plant in Crossville, Alabama, which along with a Jasper, Tennessee plant, will ship more than 180,000 tons of wood pellets per year to major utilities. More than 50 workers will be added in the coming months. The company’s plants in Peebles, Ohio and Ligonier, Indiana produce wood pellets, branded as ThermaGlo, for home heating in the domestic market. The ThermaGlo pellets are created from non-contaminated wood fiber waste and untreated residue generated from wood processing. With ENPlus A1 certification, ThermaGlo will find broad appeal in the EU, Great Britain and Asian markets as a carbonneutral fuel, according to the tribe’s website. All ThermaGlo plants meet or exceed PFI standards, a recognized industry designation of quality production.

ingsport, TN — This northeastern Tennessee city and Montrealbased Domtar Corporation are turning wood chips and yard waste into revenue and electricity, reports a TimesNews.net article. Domtar, the largest integrated producer of uncoated freesheet paper in North America, and the second largest in the world based on production capacity, buys the wood waste from Kingsport Streets and Sanitation Division. Last year, the city collected more than 2500 tons of trees and yard waste, ground it into powdered wood. The project generated $27,000 in revenue for the city. The company’s Kingsport Mill has two boilers that generate steam: one that burns the byproducts of the pulp-making process and another that burns the ground-up wood called “hog fuel.” The steam is piped through a turbine generator, producing 50 megawatts an hour. Domtar sells the power it produces on the open market, supplying electricity mainly to the eastern seaboard of the United States. The original Kingsport Mill, whose history goes back to 1916, was acquired by paper giant, Mead, in 1920. Subsequent sales were to Willamette and Weyerhaeuser. Domtar acquired the Kingsport plant in 2007, completing a stable of 10 mills owned by the multinational company in the U.S. and Canada. According to the company’s website, Domtar is one of the world’s largest producers of market kraft pulp. With sales of 1.6 million Air Dried Metric Tons (ADMT) of softwood, fluff and hardwood kraft pulp, the company serves customers in more than 40 countries worldwide. The pulp is used in making bathroom and facial tissue, diapers and personal hygiene products, specialty and packaging papers, building products and electrical insulating papers.

ince taking over as head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Administrator Scott Pruitt has overseen a significant reduction in agency staff. In his first proposed budget, President Donald Trump suggested cutting funding for EPA by approximately 30 percent. As part of that reduction, in June 2017 EPA announced plans to cut 1,200 employees by September 2017, to be achieved through a combination of buyouts and early retirements. Though falling short of that goal, Pruitt has reduced EPA by more than 770 employees, who quit, retired, or accepted buyout offers during his first year. EPA staffing is now at its lowest since the Reagan era. Environmentalists decried EPA’s proposed budget and the effort to shrink its staff, saying it threatens the agency’s ability to carry out its mission. Reform proponents argued Trump is taking EPA in the right direction, reversing actions the agency had taken over the decades to expand its mission beyond the functions assigned by Congress. William Yeatman, a senior fellow in environmental policy, energy markets, and administrative law at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, says during the Obama administration, the EPA diverted resources from actions prescribed by Congress—such as updating standards and processing state implementation plans—to new programs of the agency’s own design, primarily related to climate change mitigation. “EPA’s performance in the areas of environmental protection mandated by Congress suffered under Obama,” said Yeatman. “I reviewed more than Continued on next page

Biochar Could Benefit Anaerobic Digestion of Animal Manure

tephenville, TX — New research by Texas A&M AgriLife Research scientists shows the potential of manure-derived biochar to accelerate the anaerobic digestion (AD) process, according to findings published in the journal, Biosource Technology. Manure, the basis for biochar in the AgriLife laboratory study, is a very rich source for bacteria involved in anaerobic digestion. The researchers tested the methane yield of different concentrations of biochar exposed to different temperatures as a way of approximating real world environmental conditions. Although anaerobic digesters are becoming more accepted, the disadvantages of large manure lagoons, offensive odors and then things going awry under adverse environmental conditions have been obstacles to greater implementation. One of the challenges of building digesters on farms is the variability in environmental conditions which affect the speed of the digestion and, hence, the methane production process. Overall, the experiments showed biochar increased methane production by approximately 40 percent and reduced the production time to achieve target biogas production by 50-70 percent. Because biochar has the potential to overcome low pH and other undesirable conditions in a bioreactor – conditions which slow down or inhibit methanogenic bacterial growth and metabolism – the material could lead to construction of highly efficient AD systems. This would be an advantage on large farms where production time is a significant factor. Reduced digestion time translates to a smaller anaerobic bioreactor requiring a lower initial investment cost, less water and power consumption, operating costs and smaller footprint, the researchers said. The researchers want to do additional study to better understand the changes in microbial communities with biochar and to determine the optimum conditions for anaerobic digestion of manure. Once this is accomplished, they plan to build a scale version that can be tested and eventually used at a working dairy.
