A painter and printmaker, notable as a leader of the German Renaissance, Dürer published this celebrated artwork in Apocalypse with Pictures. Released in 1498, Apocalypse with Pictures featured fifteen woodcut prints portraying scenes from the Book of Revelation in the New Testament of the Bible.
Spanning 65mm, the huge flan of this collectable colossus forms the consummate canvas for Dürer’s iconic work. Capturing the dynamism and danger inherent in this famous print, the reverse depicts Death, War, Conquest and Famine, as well as the ‘AD’ (Albrecht Dürer) monogram. This monogram was so respected that other artists used it to pass their work off as Dürer’s! The Gold Rush
175th Anniversary!
One of the most important events in Australian history, the 1850s Gold Rush began when Edward Hargraves discovered gold near Orange in NSW in 1851 – exactly 175 years ago.
A staggering £124m worth of gold was found in the first decade, with Australia’s population rising from 430,000 in 1851 to 1.7 million in 1871. The explosion in population and wealth ensured growth in trade, agriculture, transport and communication, with authorities faced with demands for roads, rail, water and land reform. The resulting focus on responsible government set the colonies on the road to nationhood at Federation in 1901.
Artist S.T. Gill was there to witness events unfold. Lauded for his brilliant portrayals of everyday life in the colonies during the Gold Rush, with his work so highly regarded that he was published in London, Gill was dubbed ‘the artist of the Goldfields’.
