We have been seeing the old traditional checkerboard floor trend transition to a less dramatic look as of late. Still creating a statement, we are seeing this floor trend take a more subtle turn to a timeless and more sophisticated look. Not so much of the bold black and white look, but softer, earthy and warm. Neutral tones can also work wonders when you are thinking of future resale opportunities, and allows you more options when selecting your furniture and décor. Tile sizes are now ranging and going larger than what we have seen in the past . Natural Marble tiles, give a less structured checkerboard pattern, giving you the option to install in many areas of your home from kitchens to foyers, bathrooms and laundry spaces.

Installing on the diagonal when entering the room, leads you in and naturally creates a welcoming atmosphere. Rooms can appear visually longer or wider. The diagonal install can work perfect in homes where walls or rooms are not perfectly square. This trend can create your wow feature without overwhelming you or your guests coming to your home

Designers Corner

BCIN & PERMIT SUBMISSIONS

At Doug Tarry Homes, every home we design goes through a detailed review before it reaches the permit stage. Part of that process involves something called a BCIN—short for Building Code Identification Number. This qualification, issued by the province, ensures that the people preparing and reviewing building plans have a solid understanding of the Ontario Building Code. To earn it, designers complete a series of exams that cover everything from construction standards to energy efficiency and safety requirements.

Our in-house BCIN designers review each plan to make sure it meets code and is ready for municipal approval. We then submit our permit applications through CloudPermit, an online system that makes it easy to upload drawings, communicate with building departments, and track progress. This helps keep the process organized and efficient—so we can keep projects moving smoothly and continue building the high-quality homes Doug Tarry Homes is known for.

Recipe of the Month

Easter Ham

INGREDIENTS:

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

3/4 cup orange marmalade

1/2 cup Dijon mustard

1/2 fully cooked-bone-in ham (6 to 8 pounds)

1-1/2 teaspoons whole cloves

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 325°. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, marmalade and mustard; set aside. Score the surface of the ham, making diamond shapes 1/2 in. deep; insert a whole clove in the center of each diamond.

2. Place ham cut side down on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Bake, uncovered, until a thermometer reads 130°, about 2 hours.

3. Brush ham with some of the glaze. Bake until a thermometer reads 140°, 10-15 minutes longer, occasionally brushing with glaze. Serve remaining glaze with sliced ham.

A message from our President

THE JOURNEY TO ENERGY STAR® AND NET ZERO READY HOMES

At Doug Tarry Homes, our commitment to building better didn’t happen overnight. It’s been a journey rooted in innovation, curiosity, and a desire to do things differently.

That journey began in 2005 with a home known as the Waterford Cottage. During the judging process for local Home Builders’ Association awards, judge Paul Rawlings recognized that the home was already performing at a level very close to a new program called ENERGY STAR® for New Homes. He encouraged me to explore the pilot program, and so I did just that, becoming one of the first 50 builders to join.

From there, the transition toward Net Zero Ready homes was a natural progression for us. Doug Tarry Homes had already been building solar-ready homes for years, so continuing to push toward higher performance simply made sense.

While these programs introduced additional upfront costs, they also delivered significant long-term energy savings. Over time, one question kept coming up: If this is so good, why isn’t it just standard?

Today, that mindset continues to guide how we build. By focusing on performance, efficiency, and innovation, Doug Tarry Homes is proud to create homes that are better for families, and better for the future.
