COWBOY GRAFFITI

Creatives are known to perform under pressure. And you know what they say, pressure makes diamonds.
Deadline looming and mind blank, Creative Director Cheryl McMullen meandered around Round Top, Texas, begging the universe for inspiration – any direction on where to take the spring collection. And then she came around the corner to find a piece of artwork that was an “a-ha!” moment. Inspired by the colors and enamored with the grittiness, a piece by artist Ryan Buenning became the cornerstone of this collection. It sparked a tinder, and after that, seemingly everywhere she turned provided some creative kindling, and within a single trip,
she’d concepted Cowboy Graffiti.
A perfect blend of pretty and punk, Cowboy Graffiti is a colorful collection heavily anchored by black. It encourages you to embrace being a little bit eclectic and dares you to have a little fun with your ‘fit.
There’s a retro fondness and an irresistible edge, an outlaw undercurrent with intricate details to soften it. It falls somewhere between the Pink Ladies and punk rock, with a hint of a gambler’s soul.

Truth be told, this collection feels like a creative collaboration with all of Round Top – the vendors and the visitors and, just, the vibe. Artist and entrepreneur Ryan Buenning, owner of The Horseshoe, is enmeshed with all of it, and it was his artwork that kicked off Cowboy Graffiti.
Ryan’s signature style is retro and rustic, intentionally weathered, with a decidedly Western lean, all painted onto thin steel. Some of his most wellknown pieces are monochromatic nods to mid-century icons like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. Some are steel signs colorfully reminiscent of old Route 66 roadside adverts or dive bar signage. Most recently, he’s explored a more abstract style, a “colorful cowgirl collage”, as he described it – like the piece that pulled us in.
“It feels weird to call it fine art,” Ryan laughed. “But these are pieces that can be hung in a different context and more permanent spaces than the tents in fields where I started out selling metal signs! The piece that Double D Ranch bought was part of my first inaugural gallery display of Western pop art.”
Ryan’s art has a gritty charm to it, a punk-rock playfulness, and that’s what set the tone for this collection. Luckily, he was happy to collaborate with us, and we were able to create the colorful custom print that captures his aesthetic and the essence of Cowboy Graffiti in a fun, wearable way.
“I’ve made art on metal for years, but never done anything like this,” Ryan said. “It’s incredibly flattering for someone to see your art in such a way they want to reimagine it into a whole different medium.”

It’s not quite grungy and not quite girly. It’s got attitude, but with a sly wink. It’s patent leather and powder pink.
It would be impossible to categorize this collection in a single silo. There are simply too many fun facets to explore about it – the sweetheart serape, the gritty artwork of Ryan Buenning, the voluminous denims. There are tees with ransom-style lettering and biker gang-style graphics, and then there is turquoise denim and minty green jackets with florals and fringe. The silhouettes see-saw between mid-century and ultra-modern.
There’s a whole impossible-to-ignore attitude about it, a la “if you’re going to stare, I might as well make it worth your while.”

No, not like the wood; OAK = one of a kind. (You know, like how GOAT = greatest of all time.)
We’ll always love a classic concho or a vintage trophy buckle, but to complement this collection, we are all about embracing – and elevating – the kitsch. For more than a year, we scouted and hand-selected items with the right attitude (some were buckles, some were made into buckles) and affixed them to vintage leather straps to create these OAK belts that are compliment-getters and conversation-starters.

It falls somewhere between the Pink Ladies and punk rock, with a hint of a gambler’s soul.

STORY:
Well, Cheryl’s never had a taste for being told something’s not possible, and as the saying goes, - everything’s got a price.
Picture it: a warm day in Round Top during the bustling spring show, and a McMullen sister on a mission to fill her design archive with all the inspiration she could find. While browsing booth to booth, from the corner of her eye, she spots a serape that stops her in her tracks. It’s not part of the vendor’s wares, but part of the display. The color combination is as delicious as saltwater taffy, and it just looks like springtime in fabric form – she simply has to have it to share with the design team. Unfortunately, she’s met with “I’m so sorry, it’s not for sale.”
Slightly discouraged but not remotely dissuaded, Cheryl begins to do a politebut-persuasive bit of begging and bartering until she offered an amount that felt more than fair, and “that vendor couldn’t get that cloth off the table fast enough!”
We took it back to the team and reimagined it into our own version, and it is undeniably a standout of this season. We’re happy, that vendor’s happy, we’re pretty confident that you’re going to be happy – what could be more of a win-win?

It’s always been the embellishments that set us apart, and it’s definitely the details that have kept this collection impossible to classify.
Part of it is edgy, a little punk rock. Studding that’s placed intentionally to feel more like piercings, Western welts that are more pointed than smiley, fabrics that contrast shiny and sheer, and more belt loops than you ever knew you needed. Plus, a badass pair of new boots that replaced your standard pull tabs with a gemstone-studded biker belt strap.
Part of it is traditional, tried-and-true detail you can always expect from Double D Ranch: exquisite hand-beading, custom concho buttons, cool graphic tees with embroidered accents, and leather lacing and fringe finishing touches.
And part of it crossed the gamut over into girly, dare we even say dainty? Handkerchief-style florals in a classic cross-stitch, lacy cutouts, and scalloped hems. Even beading on leather that’s made to mimic needlepoint.
It’s a little bit of everything, all working together in a bikerbohemian way.

STORY:
No matter where you look, things are just getting fuller and more fabulous.
We started to see silhouettes take on a new, more voluminous shape with the transition from skinny jeans to barrel pants, and it has continued to evolve as dresses and skirts took on a more feminine feel with accentuated waists and circle skirts. Lately, the trend is trickling down to the casual side of your closet and getting more playful with pleats and puffiness.
We interpreted it in a few different ways in Cowboy Graffiti, but perhaps the most notable is that we went a little daring
with our denims. The goal was to keep the pieces on trend, but also exploit the edginess of the collection, adding things like extra-long zippers and unexpected shapes. The jacket gets a tailored-volume vibe from puffed sleeves and a unique belt-able waist. The shorts boast a bubble look with a widened hip and a pinch-pleat at the hem – and of course, we added a second set of belt loops because we are still very much loving that layered belt look!

Like we mentioned, almost all of the inspiration for this collection came from a single trip of wandering around the Round Top Antiques Market. We eyed this cool vintage hair-on hide and immediately knew we could make it work in some way. Turns out, we made it work in a lot of ways, from statement shorts to a chic handbag, we added it to a new boot, and we even adapted it into a silk scarf.
