MONTHLY WALK by Malcolm Price
Walking round Shawford and Compton Northwards towards Winchester. The next 800 metres require underfoot care as we progress past sweeping gardens, swans swimming, fish wallowing in the shallows and the odd heron plying its meal trade. This path takes us up to Compton Lock, a local picnic spot and popular swimming pool during the warm summer weather. This is our cue to turn left across the narrow footbridge. This month’s walk heads out East of the area towards Winchester, with the selected start from The Bridge Inn, Shawford, Winchester, SO21 2BP (photo 1). This Inn charges for parking, redeemable when using the pub later, but local free parking can also be found nearby.

From here we are leaving the waterways behind and as we proceed onwards, trying to avoid the attraction of any cross paths, until we enter a bridge under the London Bound Railway (photo 2) and subsequently the M3 motorway bridge that leads us upward into the village of Compton and a busy road to cross. The walk covers approximately 4.5 miles, with the full range of underfoot conditions to negotiate, along with a testing hill climb and stunning views as a reward. In the context of this extremely wet winter, the first part of this walk will likely be very muddy as well as providing a number of exposed tree roots along the Itchen towpath; so great care needs to be taken ‘early doors’. A return trip in 90 minutes would be good going for the steady walker, although a longer outing is excusable – to allow for viewing time. Commencing this walk we go to the front of the Inn and cross the road (carefully) while turning left crossing the River Itchen bridge and now taking the left hand towpath on the opposite side of the road, aiming

Taking care to cross, what was once the A33 main road before the building of the M3, we walk on down as far as the church on the left (photo 3), whence we turn left beside the church along the gravel path. This track very soon starts to climb, swinging right and taking us ever upward through an avenue of @mlggazettesnews
trees (photo 4) for some 600 metres. Just as the incline starts to level off we meet a choice of arrow directions, which is where we turn left up a narrow slope, which now wriggles up again until stopping at a local road. We turn right along this road, that services a number of ‘high end’ properties, with extensive gardens and driveways. Once the tarmac disappears, then gravel and mud reappear and in a short while we meet a gate across the road; here we turn left and leave behind the fabulous views into Winchester from the top of Olivers Battery. Down car park in 200 metres. Within the car park a gate now takes us through a small wood and another gate opens out onto the Downs, with breathtaking views to the North and East across mid Hampshire. At this point we turn right, keeping on top of the hill, for 200 metres, as far as the tarmac path that crosses our trail. We turn left down the hill and begin a long and occasionally slippery stretch, as far as the lower car park. Just in front us now is Shawford Station (a popular commuter destination) and the road bridge that we proceed underneath to emerge once again opposite The Bridge Inn.
This left turn takes us uphill for a few strides then commences a long and very gradual down slope stroll, up to a kilometre’s worth towards Silkstead. Long before actually reaching that hamlet we turn left at the first footpath to appear, which also picks up a section of the Monarchs Way (purported to have been King Charles I escape route from the defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1651, some 615 miles that ended at Brighton). This fresh gravel/cinder path aims us towards some farm outbuildings, then a gate, then the early beginnings of Shepherds Lane; as houses begin to speckle the route. The road takes a sharp left, then a right, as we now join the actual tarmac drive, which continues for around 600 metres up to the corner, passing Shepherds Down School, then immediately after taking a sharp right (photo 5) under the M3 motorway tunnel (follow the Monarchs Way Arrow) and emerging beside Otterbourne Road, near the top of Shawford Down. Our route departs now from the Monarchs Way as we veer left, carefully crossing the road and turning into the top of Shawford
A warm welcome awaits all walkers, since many Itchen Way foot travellers pause here on the final leg of their trip into Winchester.
It’s always good to be prepared. Here’s some tips for your walk… • Remember high visibility clothing, vest or sash are ideal. Be seen at all times. • Robust footwear, walking boots, good sturdy trainers – normal house shoes not recommended. • A torch (for gloomy days), mobile phone and a whistle (personal protection and safety). • Make sure you take your rubbish home to keep our countryside clean and help the environment. • Dog walkers – take a supply of poop scoop bags and for hot days water & portable bowl. • Be ‘Tick Aware’ when enjoying the countryside. Heartburn and Acid Reflux Heartburn is a burning feeling in the chest caused by stomach acid travelling up towards the throat (acid reflux). If it keeps happening, it’s called gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). The main symptoms of acid reflux are: yy heartburn – a burning sensation in the middle of your chest yy an unpleasant sour taste in your mouth, caused by stomach acid You may also have: yy a cough or hiccups that keep coming back yy a hoarse voice yy bad breath yy bloating and feeling sick Your symptoms will probably be worse after eating, when lying down and when bending over. Causes of heartburn and acid reflux Lots of people get heartburn from time to
time. There’s often no obvious reason why. Sometimes it’s caused or made worse by: yy certain food and drink – such as coffee, alcohol, chocolate and fatty or spicy foods yy being overweight yy smoking yy pregnancy yy stress and anxiety yy some medicines, such as anti-inflammatory painkillers (like ibuprofen) yy a hiatus hernia – when part of your stomach moves up into your chest How you can ease heartburn and acid reflux yourself Simple lifestyle changes can help stop or reduce heartburn. Do 4 eat smaller, more frequent meals 4 raise 1 end of your bed 10 to 20cm by putting something under your bed or mattress – make it so your chest and head are above the level of your waist, so stomach acid does not travel up towards your throat

Apply now for befriender training course Friends of the Family is inviting applications for its next volunteer befriender training course which will take place in Winchester in the spring. The course is free and will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to become a befriender to a child aged between 5 and 13. Delivered over two days, the course covers all aspects of the befriending role including communication skills, boundaries, befriending activities and issues facing children today. Following training, volunteers are carefully matched to a child from the local area who is in need of support and friendship. Applicants must be over the age of 23 and be able to visit a child once a week, either after school or at the weekend, for a minimum of 12 months. Volunteers receive regular supervision, invitations to volunteer get-togethers and on-going training opportunities. Friends of the Family also organises termly workshops for children and volunteers as well as an annual activity day which volunteers can also attend. 5s to 13s Befriending Manager, Sam Hunt, said: “Our current volunteers enjoy a huge range of activities with their focus child, including baking, reading, playing board games, picnics, dog-walking and bike rides. We would love to hear from anyone from across the Winchester district who can spare two hours a week to offer support and friendship to a child. Super-fit fundraisers do pull ups for pounds in aid of neonatal unit THE families of babies being treated on the neonatal unit at Royal Hampshire County Hospital will enjoy improved facilities thanks to the efforts of a group of super-fit fundraisers. Members of Dawn Breakers Winchester, an early morning fitness class based at The Westgate School, raised an amazing £10,000 by completing an exhausting 12 hours of high intensity interval training. Sessions normally last just 45 minutes, but the group did exercises including push ups,

“We set ourselves a target of raising £6,000, so we smashed that, and are delighted to have raised so much money.” Sharon Stone, clinical matron on the neonatal unit at Winchester hospital, said: “On behalf of everyone who works on the unit, and all of the families who will benefit from the improvements we are able to make with this amazing amount of money, I would like to say a huge thank you to Dawn Breakers Winchester. “When babies need our specialist help, it can be extremely stressful for their parents and families. Otter-spotting with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust
Whether it’s a glimpse of water-webbed Otter © Russ Valentine whiskers, a lithe body porpoising in play or the tip of a ruddering tail, the sight of a shy otter is one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences in the UK. Pushed to the brink by hunting, habitat destruction and pesticides, otters almost disappeared from rivers and waterways in England, surviving in small numbers in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Thankfully, after huge efforts to improve water quality and the banning of chemicals such as DDT, otter numbers are increasing across the UK and the odds of spotting one are vastly improved. They are a flagship species of our wetlands and if you see an otter about, you know that the local ecosystem is relatively healthy. Here are the key signs that otters are out and about on rivers near you: Otter runs – as you walk along the river’s edge, look out for trampled vegetation, and a circular gap in the reeds where otters slip seamlessly through into the water. Spraint – otters often leave smelly spraint on tree roots, riverside rocks and under bridges to mark their territory. Look closely and you’ll be able to see what’s been on the menu, perhaps fish bones, frog bones or feathers. Bizarrely, otter spraint has a rather pleasant smell, reminiscent of Jasmine tea! Footprints – otter footprints are very distinctive. Look out for two inch wide, fivetoed, webbed footprints in soft mud. Sightings – if you’re really lucky, you might get to see one yourself. Otters are fast, agile swimmers and can be difficult to identify, but for the best chance of seeing one watch along the edge of reedbeds where they often hunt. Look out for a mammal about a metre long, swimming very low in the water with only its head showing. It’ll often dive for fish, leaving a trail of bubbles as it goes. Sparsholt College Group makes commitment to support students and staff with their mental health and wellbeing Sparsholt and Andover College has reaffirmed their commitment to staff and students by signing up to a brand new national mental health and wellbeing charter, which reflects the existing work of the college but provides a framework of recognition. This charter has been created by the Association of Colleges in conjunction with mental health experts. The 11-point document includes commitments to: yy Promoting equality of opportunity and challenging mental health stigma yy Providing appropriate mental health training for staff yy Providing targeted individual mental health support where appropriate Colleges across England teach and train 2.2 million people each year - including 685,000 young people. Every year, 1 in 10 young people experience a mental health problem and 1 in 5 young people aged 16-24 experience a common mental illness such as anxiety or depression at any one time. Add to these facts, 75% of adults with a diagnosable mental health problem experience their first symptoms before the age of 24 means Sparsholt and Andover College plays a vital role in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of its students and staff.

Road Safety: What to teach and age-appropriate messages - PART 2 By the age of five, children are ready to learn: The Green Cross Code (find a safe place to cross, stop, look, listen, cross with care, looking and listening all the time - see below) The safest places to cross: underpasses; footbridges; where there is a crossing-patrol (lollipop) person; traffic light crossings; zebra crossings. In a car, only get out on the pavement side. In a bus or coach or minibus, wear your seat belt if there is one. When getting off, never cross the road in front or behind the bus. Wait until it has pulled away so you can see in all directions. The Green Cross Code yy Find a safe place to cross yy Stop just before you get to the kerb yy Look all around for traffic and listen yy If traffic is coming, let it pass yy When it is safe, go straight across the road - do not run yy Go to the THINK! website to read the full Green Cross Code with more detailed advice. By the age of 9 and upwards, depending on development, children are ready to explore: yy The impact of road crashes, injuries and deaths on families. yy The responsibilities of drivers to protect other people, especially people who are on foot or bicycle. yy The dangers of giving in to peer pressure to take risks. What to teach to teens Students aged 11-20 may initially think that road safety is for younger children, or boring. But most young people have a lot to say about road safety and won’t find it boring as long as it’s taught well. In fact, effective road safety teaching with these age ranges enables you to explore challenging and worth-while issues, including: yy Death and bereavement, and especially the impact of sudden, violent and ‘manmade’ bereavement, such as through road death. Life-changing injuries (such as paralysis and brain injury) and how this affects people and their families yy Taking responsibility for others in the context of good citizenship - particularly if driving yy Society’s obsession with motor vehicles, the effects this has on communities (safety, health, pollution, social interaction, costs), and the alternatives to driving yy The differences in levels of risk-taking among males and females, and young drivers and older drivers yy Alcohol and drugs – including alcohol and drug use among young people, and how this links with the issue of drink and drug driving

There are a number of reasons that students may not initially be receptive to road safety teaching. For example, they may: yy Think they ‘know it all’ and road safety is for ‘babies’ yy Already be taking risks on roads (for example, mucking about on busy roads, driving without a licence or taking illegal drugs and driving) yy Feel invincible - road crashes happen to someone else, not them. They think their youth and fast reaction times will keep them out of trouble yy Have a misunderstanding of the true extent of deaths and injuries on roads and just how at risk they are as young people. However, young people are likely to have witnessed risky behaviour on roads and grasp road safety issues easily as they deal with roads every day. They also may well have experienced, or heard of, someone in their community being hurt or killed in a road crash, and therefore understand that death and serious injury is a reality on roads.
