How lucky we are to live in such a beautiful area where we can take walks and ‘get away from it all’. Away from all the uncertainty and confusion. We can create our own space, look at the wildlife, the sea, the countryside and smile despite it all. Please do keep smiling, it is infectious! Our local trades and services have protocols in place to keep you and themselves safe. If we wear masks, regularly wash our hands and keep our distance to prevent the spreading of any disease, the virus will not survive, and we can all get to hugging each other again! FREE TRIAL FOR RELATIVES AT BRENDONCARE PARK ROAD Brendoncare knows it can be very difficult when thinking about what is best for a loved one when they need help and support. The decision to think about moving an older relative or friend into a care home is one of the hardest decisions people have to make. To help ease this transition, Brendoncare Park Road is offering a free trial for a relative to move in alongside the new resident, so they can help them settle in to their new surroundings. The resident and relative will each be given a room so they can isolate together for up to two weeks, to ensure safety for them and their fellow residents. This will also provide the opportunity for them to get to know the staff and work together on their individual needs and preferences. The relative will see kindness and compassion in action and will be able to observe the high standard of care their loved one will receive. Erin Langley, Brendoncare Park Road Home Manager, said, “We know how hard it can be to be apart from a loved one at this time and we wanted to be able to help in any way possible. We are delighted to be able to offer free rooms for a relative or friend, so they can isolate together. We look forward to welcoming new residents into our lovely home.” Brendoncare Park Road is run by Winchester-based charity, The Brendoncare Foundation, and provides nursing, respite and end-of-life care to 40 older people in Winchester. As the autumn months begin to melt into the winter, our many woodlands and quintessential country landscapes are undergoing many customary seasonal changes and there surely could be nowhere better to enjoy the weather changes than in Hampshire. Here’s another five interesting facts from around the county, including an interesting look at the joys of an autumn in Hampshire. With the weather becoming more and more as we might expect, Britons up and down the country have Hampshire to thank for the very useful invention of the umbrella. At first mocked by the fashion world of the day, the popularity of the umbrella can perhaps be attributed to Hampshire local Jonas Hanway who was said to have taken London by storm, quite literally, by his being the first male in London to carry an umbrella. Hanway who was born in Portsmouth and is best known for founding the Magdalen Hospital, would not be seen without his trusty accessory, despite facing much ridicule and raillery. Perhaps the weather was better then! From Henry VIII to Lord Horatio Nelson, Hampshire has long played an important role in the navy. In fact, the village of Buckler’s Hard by the Beaulieu River, was responsible for building many of Nelson’s fleet from PHOTO BY BUCKLER’S HARD MARITIME MUSEUM

trees in the New Forest. Today the Buckler’s Hard Maritime Museum offers a fine insight into the heritage of the Hampshire village and how this almost hidden gem helped to create the fleet which ultimately aided the victory at Trafalgar. Among the great ships that were built at Buckler’s Hard were the much loved, Agamemnon as well as the Euryalus and Swiftsure.

Did you know that the site of the Wykeham Arms in Winchester has been home to a pub since as early as 1755 and interestingly, there is a rumour that naval hero Lord Nelson himself once stayed at the inn? Of course many inns and pubs up and down the country laid claim to a visit from Lord Nelson however it is highly probable that the Wykeham Arms did indeed welcome the national hero, especially considering Nelson’s connection to Buckler’s Hard. Certainly the pub is steeped in history, located in Hampshire’s historic city of Winchester and is a wonderfully atmospheric place to stay, just as Nelson himself did.

Interestingly the village of Hambledon-le-Rice once played an interesting and, many could say, a vital role in the war when it was home to a special aviation school in which pilots would be trained to fly all manner of British wartime aircraft from Lancasters to Spitfires. The Hampshire village also saw several hundred aircraft built at Hambledon-le-Rice. Sadly, for a variety of reasons including local development, the site of the former flying school is no longer accessible. However Hampshire's history will forever remember the time when the county's skies became the playground of many novice war pilots.

Although the seasonal changes of autumn do tend to bring out polar reactions in diﬀerent individuals, several visitors to the county who do enjoy the weather are the several migratory bird breeds that come to the UK for the winter and have been spotted in Hampshire over the years. Although there are many birds to enjoy from the comfort and warmth of the great indoors, several of the breeds which may well be making an appearance in Hampshire skies include redwings,waxwings, bewick swans and the majestic short eared owl.

MARWELL HELPS RETURN OF RARE LIZARD

Exceptional breeding year at Marwell A major effort is underway to boost numbers of the UK’s rarest lizard after a huge forest fire in Dorset this summer devastated one of the country’s remaining sand lizard habitats. Conservation charity Marwell Wildlife has teamed up with Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (ARC) and Forestry England in Dorset to release more than 200 young sand lizards back into the wild at Puddletown Forest following an exceptional breeding year at the zoo. Dorset is a stronghold for this protected species but a recent wildfire at Wareham Forest, which burned for more than two weeks, destroyed over 220 hectares of vital wildlife habitat. A team of volunteers were able to rescue and relocate some reptiles in the days after the fire but hundreds of sand lizards were impacted. The fire, which was thought to be caused by a disposable barbecue or camp fire, burned for more than two weeks and took four million litres of water to extinguish. Sand lizards, once more widespread in England, declined rapidly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries owing to large-scale habitat loss and fragmentation. The species was lost from 12 counties in England and Wales and native populations now only remain in Merseyside, Surrey, and Dorset. Even here, losses of 97 per cent, 95 per cent and 90 per cent have occurred respectively. Reintroduction efforts over the last 50 years have worked to return populations to suitable sites and counties from which they had disappeared.

Last year the charity refreshed and increased the size of its captive breeding facility, to increase capacity for young lizards and expand research opportunities in order understand more about this rare reptile and safeguard its fragile populations. Rachel Gardner, Ecologist at Marwell Wildlife, said: “This summer has seen an exceptional number of sand lizards hatch at Marwell Zoo, enabling a great boost to the numbers being released in Dorset. As well as contributing young lizards to the wider reintroduction program, Marwell Wildlife has also focused on research into this incredibly cryptic species. It is hoped that improving our understanding of sand lizard ecology and behaviour, as well as movement and survival following release, will help inform reintroduction protocol for this species going forward.” Sand lizards are dependent on dry, sandy lowland heathland or coastal sand dunes. They are poor dispersers and are unable to traverse unsuitable habitats in order to reach areas which could support them. They are regarded as a flagship rare species, as their existence indicates the health of a specific environment, that will also attract other key flora and fauna, which is why their reintroductions are such a vital part of habitat conservation.

Marwell Wildlife, dedicated to the conservation of species and habitats locally and globally, has been home to a captive breeding population of sand lizards at Marwell Zoo for over thirty years, supporting eﬀorts to reintroduce this species to restored former strongholds. Working in partnership with the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation and with support from Natural England, Marwell Wildlife has contributed more than 2000 young lizards to

a six months it has been! Few could have foreseen the changes in lifestyle that we’ve all had to endure. The pandemic has impacted upon everyone and we at Caremark are no different. In the early days a number of our clients chose to go into self-isolation, preferring not to have carers visit their homes. Similarly, carers would occasionally selfisolate if they or members of their families showed symptoms. We were delighted to congratulate one of our clients on her 100th birthday in July but she’s a mere spring chicken compared to another client who is fast approaching his 104th birthday! Happily, everything is now much more stable, we have recruited some wonderful new carers and many of the clients who were in self-isolation are once again enjoying the many benets of professional care and support in their own homes.

A lasting Power of Attorney, just a document for the elderly? In a nutshell, no. Perhaps not a comforting thought to have with your morning coffee and tea cake but mental capacity complications can occur to any of us at any time. Of course, this may be more acute in our later years when Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia and general 'forgetfulness' are more widely acknowledged. But a skiing accident, a car incident or a sporting injury can occur when you least expect it! Now to consider the detail. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document executed by you in favour of a chosen third party, who is then authorised to act on your behalf. There are two types of LPA; a Property and Financial Affairs LPA and a Health and Welfare LPA. As the name suggests, the former allows your attorneys to make decision with regard to your financial affairs and property (e.g. accessing your bank and savings accounts, dealing with your pensions, investments, tax affairs and, potentially, selling your home). Subject to any restrictions you decide to place on yours attorneys, this LPA can be used by your attorneys as soon as it has been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, a government body appointed to protect the affairs of those who lack mental capacity. It can be used both whilst you still have mental capacity (e.g. if you lose physical capacity or are abroad for a prolonged period) and in the event that you lose mental capacity in the future. By contrast, a Health and Welfare LPA deals with those more personal matters including decisions about where you should live., the care you may require, accessing medical

records and, emotively, decisions about life sustaining treatment.� Your attorneys can only act under this LPA when you lack mental capacity to make the decision in question yourself. So regardless of your age, an LPA is an extremely valuable document. Consider what would happen to your aﬀairs if you did not have an LPA. Who would operate your business? How would your children’s school fees be paid? Who would make decisions about the medical treatment you should receive? And who would decide which care home to move you to? Without an LPA in place, these decisions would have to be made by a Court appointed deputy, following a formal deputyship application, taking usually around six months or more. The deputy may be someone unknown to you or, worse still, someone you may not have chosen for yourself! The major advantage, therefore, in making an LPA now is choice. Your choice. Of course, most people would concede that they should make a Will, but many forget about an LPA. Arguably, being alive, an LPA is of greater importance to you! At the end of the day, an LPA is like an insurance policy; hopefully you will never need it, but if you do, you and your loved one will be extremely glad to have it in place. The Adventures of Daichi By Debbie Corney Daichi, the Dashing Dude, is our playful campervan who loves to take us out and dash us away to new and familiar places to have some family fun. Last month he did not disappoint. Many of us had holidays abroad cancelled, so what a great excuse to make the most of our wonderful English South Coast. Daichi was delighted to dash us to Devon for a week, away from it all. I love driving along the coast to Devon, taking in some amazing views along the top around Bridport and then having a stop and something to eat on the beach at Charmouth. Fossil finding at its best. I really know I am on holiday when we stop and look out to sea here. I can relax, unwind and start to leave the stresses behind. Bovisand Beach was where we were heading. We had never been before but as the holiday in Tenerife was cancelled by the flight company just a month prior, I had looked on Airbnb to find this gorgeous view of the sea from the small cottage at the top of the cliff. That was the one. It is all about the view for me. On arriving at Bovisand Beach, which is a stone's throw away from Plymouth, I was not at all disappointed. It was incredible. You could see for miles. A Navy ship was anchored off the shore, there were swimmers, kayaks, stand up paddle boarders, sailing boats, motorboats and small ferries taking passengers to the idyllic looking villages of Cawsand and Kingsand opposite, across the bay. Truly delightful. In fact, when you sat down in the cottage and the tide

Watching the boats go by...

was in it felt like we were on a boat in the middle of the sea - that is all we could see! We were lucky with the weather too. The previous week had been wet and windy, but this week looked much better, and it was! As a youngster, brought up in the North, rock pooling was a major delight. Dad and I used to pick winkles by the bucket load, literally, boil them and have them for tea. “Yum”, I say… “Ugh”, I can hear you say! It is a personal taste. This area had great rock pools and some caves too - when the tide was out. The first day on the beach was great. Hayden was able to get his race board out and practise his run into the sea at great speed (teenage boys…) while I lounged on the beach drinking coffee… one of my favourite occupations! Stephen put on his wetsuit and was off splashing about too. The sea rolled slowly, or not so slowly, back into the small bay and started to fill those rock pools with swishing (I love that sound) seawater and seaweed. There was rather a lot of seaweed due to the previous week's storms, but that did not put us off. What we did not anticipate was the speed with which the sea crept in… we nearly had to swim our way back to the steps! All good fun. Us Brits do like to be dramatic at times! Back at the cottage we soaked in the sun on the decking overlooking the incredible bay below us. Where we had been sitting was now full of water. Thought provoking… but I am a bit like that. An hour later, back to the other beach, where there was still some sand to sit on. Hayden could go charging back into the sea again. Watching the sunset, the rippling

waves and the glittering sea with another coffee in hand was a great way to end our first day. Another day on the 'other beach' was decided and this time I did spend time in the rock pools which had small shoals of speedy fish and dancing seaweed. I could not find a crab! Not one. I was quite perturbed about that, so it gave me something to worry about! I think we must like problems, as we always seem to create them for ourselves. How funny. Three wonderful days on the beach. We were fully 'unwound'. Now Hayden is a teenager, going into the sixth form, so uniform is no longer a requirement. Primark. He wanted to go to Primark. Wednesday was due to have some rain, so we planned our trip to Drake Circus, the shopping Centre in Plymouth, which of course has a Primark. Daichi, who had been keeping guard all week, was happy to take us shopping. However, I would not recommend a van in Plymouth. It is very difficult to park! The headroom in the multi storeys is not quite enough… and there is little parking for more than an hour anywhere else. Another problem – really!? Have to laugh. Finally, we managed to find a space for a maximum three hours. Primark was fun! I could not believe it. Literally within half an hour all three of us had found what we were looking for… and more… and all at a great price. Since you cannot try anything

Rockpooling... Whatever the weather!

on at this odd time we are living in, you either like it or you don't, you buy it, or you don't. Simple. The times I have spent trying clothes on, for hours, to come away with one item if I am lucky. This time, no choice, take it or leave it. There may be some advantages to some of the restrictions which have at the moment! Not only that, I am now trendy Mum! Leggings, 'Converse' looking shoes (I used to call them sandshoes, but that is not cool these days…) and a gorgeous cardigan that looks hand knitted and reminds me of one my Grandma made me a long time ago! Hayden got his red shoes to match his shirt and more skinny jeans too. Stephen even bought shoes and a pair of trousers. Success – we were all smiles! The National Marine Aquarium was another really enjoyable day. What fish, wow! We also went on the Merry-Go-Round, Mary Poppins style, by the sea wall. It just had to be done. A meal out, just passed the Plymouth Lido, which had reopened for the summer, in a restaurant with almost 360 degree views of the sea. What more could we want? The whole week was a hit. Simple fun on our British Isle. Daichi loves to take us away, recharge those batteries and then back to reality, still smiling. It took us over ten hours to travel home as we kept stopping enroute to take in all the different places. LOCAL CHARITY APPEALS FOR VOLUNTEER BEFRIENDERS Winchester-based charity, Friends of the Family, is appealing for volunteers to train to become befrienders for children who live in the local area. The charity’s 5s to 13s Befriending Service was set up in 2009 to provide support and friendship to children and families who are dealing with diﬃcult and challenging circumstances. The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in a shortage of volunteers and a waiting list of children in need of support. Before being carefully matched to a child, volunteers attend a free 2-day training course, provided by Friends of the Family. The training covers all aspects of the befriending role including communication skills, boundaries, befriending activities and issues facing children today. New volunteers will also have the opportunity to meet a current 5s to 13s befriender who will give a personal insight into their befriending experience. Sam Hunt, 5s to 13s Befriending Manager, said: “We are very keen to hear from anyone who enjoys being with children and who has two hours a week to spare to volunteer for this unique and rewarding role. We would also like to reassure potential volunteers that our bespoke training course will adhere to the recommended social distancing rules and will also include guidance on how they can befriend a child safely during the coronavirus pandemic.” Applicants must be over the age of 23 and be able to visit a child once a week, either after school or at the weekend, for 12 months. Volunteers receive regular supervision, invitations to volunteer gettogethers and on-going training opportunities. Prior to the pandemic,

Friends of the Family also organised termly workshops for children as well as an annual activity day which they are hoping to run again when it is safe to do so. Sam Hunt added: “We have had to adapt over the past 6 months and our volunteers have been amazing. Most have made use of Zoom and WhatsApp to stay connected to their focus children and families when restrictions have prevented face-to-face visits. But more recently they have been able to enjoy socially-distanced visits, dogwalks, bike rides, picnics and trips to the local park with their focus child. We do now have children waiting for a befriender so if you think that you could offer your time and friendship then please get in touch to find out more.
