01962 863626 Winchester Bereavement Support (WBS) is a voluntary organisation and since it was founded in 1982,has been offering helpful information and emotional support to bereaved adults in Winchester and the surrounding area. While face to face visiting is not currently permitted, we are still able to provide support by telephone. We recognise that for many this period of “ lockdown” and social distancing may have highlighted their sense of loss of someone significant in their lives. It seems like almost no time at all has passed since Hampshire’s countryside was last scattered with the carpet of colours from the autumnal leaves. Although this might well prove to be one of the strangest autumns in history, Hampshire has had plenty of interesting chapters of its own in its tapestry of heritage. From an interesting piece of farming equipment to a vital role in the war effort, here are some more fascinating facts from around the county.

It is not a secret that Hampshire played an important role in World War II, interestingly however, Lepe Beach near Southampton, was especially vital to the war effort as it was used to build essential concrete caissons to form part of the portable Mulberry harbours which was a clever feat of engineering developed for use after in
connection with the D-Day landings. The construction of these concrete ‘chocolate blocks’, as they have been called, was to be of the utmost secrecy and so it was chosen that Lepe was the perfect location. After their completion, they were transported by the sea to form the Mulberry harbours. Did you know that Jane Austen and John Constable were among the many visitors to Netley Abbey? Although it could be said that the now ruined abbey has had an existence that is as quiet as the landscape around it, it has been lauded as one of the best preserved medieval Cistercian monasteries in the southern counties and has this attracted much interest from visitors throughout the generations

Were you aware the pretty Hampshire town of Emsworth, on the nearby border with Sussex, has been home to so many national and international celebrities? From actors such as Nicholas Lyndhurst and Albert Finney to P.G Wodehouse and Sir Peter James Blake who broke the world record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the world in 1994, Emsworth has always been a small town with an important role in the county. In fact, so important was the town in Queen Victoria’s reign that she herself visited in 1842 and loaned her name to some of Emsworth’s road names! Photo: Richard Woollett
Did you know that it was in Hampshire that a well known piece of farming equipment was first developed? Today farming is often PHOTO: ROMAN GRAC associated with large tractors however in times gone by, it was the figures of ploughs and heavy horses that dotted the landscape. Amazingly it was in the village of Abbot's Anne that the iron plough was first developed in the early 19th century by two brothers whose invention caused widespread demand and changed the course of farming.
Did you know? It has been said that Four Marks is reported to
be the only settlement to be called such? Four Marks is located in the east of the county and its original settlers were soldiers who had survived the Crimean War and had been given homes and more specifically land although the village had origins dating back to at least the 16th century.

Trinity Winchester launches new Charity No 1074604 Housing First Accommodation project “UnderOneRoof@trinity” Trinity Winchester will open a new chapter in its 34 years of supporting homeless and vulnerable people in Winchester District by providing accommodation on-site for the first time. The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Winchester, Councillor Patrick Cunningham, in the presence of HM Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire Nigel Atkinson Esq, presided over a small, socially-distanced ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on Monday 12 Oct. Under OneRoof@trinity will comprise of 12 ‘flatlets’ for people who are rough-sleeping repeatedly –often the hardest to reach and to help in our community.The flatlets will have ensuite bathrooms to reduce the risk of contagion through sharing facilities, protecting both occupants and the wider community. Residents will be offered individualised person-centred support to help them get their lives back on track and move towards successfully living independently. UnderOneRoof@trinity will enhance the day centre services that Trinity has offered for more than 30 years, the last 10 at its purpose-builtBradbury House day centre in Durngate. These include hot meals, showers and laundry provision, health and wellbeing support in partnership with St Clements’ Surgery, counselling, and learning, IT training and employability mentoring delivered with local businesses. Trinity helps over 650 individual users annually. Sue McKenna, Trinity’s Chief Executive says: “UnderOneRoof@trinity will enable people in most need to live on our site and not have to go back to sleeping rough when we close for the day. It will give people a safe space and personcentredsupport to address the underlying issues that have led to their repeatedly ending up on the streets”. A regular user of Trinity’s day services commented: “I’m really looking

forward to having the opportunity to live here and have the support I need for a brighter future”.The new building has been designed to complement Trinity’s award-winningday centre by acclaimed local architects Hyphen and will be built by Bentley Projects Ltd based in Colden Common. It will be environmentally friendly, using highly insulated structural panels. Winchester City Council has provided the land on a long lease, together with a grant of £50,000. The total project budget is £1.47m. Trinity has already raised over £1.43m through a successful capital appeal to trusts and foundations*, major donors, corporate and community support. We are confident of raising the remainder by UnderOneRoof@trinity’s scheduled opening in May 2021.Councillor Kelsie Learney, Winchester City Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Asset Management said “UnderOneRoof@trinity will be a fantastic addition to Winchester’s social housing provision, which we are delighted to support. Trinity Winchester continues to be a key partner in our drive to help people who are homeless in the District, often through circumstances beyond their control”.

Top tips for gifting property Property Gifting can be a tax efficient way to pass inheritance down a generation or two, not to mention helping children or grandchildren on to the housing ladder. For property (be it a house, farm or land), here are some top tips to consider: Is the property registered? Hampshire was one of the last areas to introduce compulsory first registration of land. Consequently, there are still properties which are not registered at HM Land Registry. As a matter of good legal housekeeping, it is sensible to ensure that property to be gifted is registered so that you and your family can deal with it more easily. This will provide comfort that the legal title is held on a central electronic register, rather than in paper deeds that could be lost or damaged over time. Whole or part? If you are gifting the whole property, then the process can be straight-forward. However, if you wish to split up a property – perhaps a farm – so that you gift part of it to one child and part to another, then some thought needs to be given to the legal structure of the gift. Of particular importance is what rights and reservations each part of the property may need for independent occupation. Do you wish to retain control of the gifted property going forward? Property can either be gifted outright to children and/or grandchildren or to a discretionary trust. The advantage of the former approach is simplicity. However, the property gifted is then vulnerable to the recipient’s own misfortunes, whether that be death, divorce or bankruptcy, and is no longer within your control. By contrast, a gift to trust of which you remain one of at least two trustees, can be controlled, managed and protected by

you for the benefit of your intended recipients. What are the tax implications? With any gift, it is important to consider the interplay between inheritance tax and capital gains tax on the transfer, as well as any stamp duty land tax (SDLT) and income tax implications. This is a complex area but can be worked through methodically to ensure the best result depending on your and your family’s personal circumstances. Can you continue to benefit from the assets gifted away? This is a question often asked. In order for the gift to be effective for inheritance tax purposes, it is important that you do not reserve any benefit in the gifted property. This means paying market rent for your use of the property following the date of the gift. The implications vary, depending on how the gift is structured, which, once again, will be discussed with you in detail. A fresh walk from
C hilbolton
This month’s walk returns to some of the most beautiful parts of the River Test and it’s surrounds, as we once again head up to the North of the Region.
Start here
With the suggested start from The Abbots Mitre, Village Street, Chilbolton, SO20 6BA
the regular walker would expect to complete this ‘long 5 miles’ in under 2 hours. The route is well marked and generally easy walking, but there are two climbs along the way that will push the heart rate up. Leaving the car park, we turn right along the main road for about 300 metres as far as the church on the left (St Mary The Less)
This was built in the 12th century as a predominantly wooden structure, being replaced over time by the current masonry building. We walk on past the church and cemetery before taking a left hand turn over a stile, across a field, through another stile and turn right tracing the line of the River Test as far as a large wooden bridge. Here we turn right over the bridge and across the open meadows for 400 metres, then up to, and once again, across another wooden footbridge that spans another section of the Test. At this bridge it is not unusual to view trout swimming in the shallows so it is worth a lingering view. Once across this fresh bridge we arrive on Fullerton Road, where we must turn left and walk for a good 300 metres, passing the right turn and arrow for the Test Way. The next turn right is our destination...
that takes us uphill underneath a disused railway line bridge and on upwards following the outline of the field and the footpath arrows. (The fields either side are private so do follow the main path). Clearing the brow of the hill the path emerges above a large valley with views Northwards, then aims downhill, over a stile and at a steep angle towards a new stile that borders a fast moving road where we must halt. Taking the very greatest of care we need to cross the road and select the footpath opposite. This borders the left side of a wide field for almost 600 metres, with hedges and trees on the left. We enter a small wooded copse and turn left, taking the arrowed choice.
and once again traversing a disused railway line. We have an 800 metre walk along the line, with an opportunity to find the platforms that formed Fullerton Junction (hidden in the undergrowth) when Queen Victoria was purported to travel along the line to the Isle of Wight. The line approaches a new railway arch with a sign announcing the Test Way...
then across a narrow wooden bridge that spans the River Anton, a tributary of the Test. From here we turn right and follow the footpath signs that take us over a concrete bridge and up to a metal farm gate. Going through the gate we now turn left and begin a stroll along the once busy Sprat and Winkle railway line and before long we commence the second of the significant climbs. The views from the top of this climb shows Chilbolton Observatory some 3 miles away and the fields around it. These views disappear as we drop down hill once again to a local road, where we turn left again and continue the downhill trek for a further 600 metres, crossing the River Test and then taking the left hand path that borders the river. This path goes under a brick bridge and approaches a tarmac road where we turn the sharpest of right turns, around the location map...
and an important sharp left turn to take us up to the Coley Road almost opposite West Down Car Park. From here we should walk along the road for about 500 metres until we meet a sign and path on the left, signposted to the Test Way, where we swing down and follow the tree line and water meadows for around 800 metres. This includes crossing a playing field and rounding a big house along the gravel road as far as Cow Common, a small local car park.
Finish here Since we are back now in Central Chilbolton the return home is best taken over to the right to follow Joys Lane up to Village Street at the top and turn left for the final 300 metres to reclaim the car at The Abbots Mitre. Naturally enough the reward at the end of this walk can be refreshment at the establishment that hosted the car parking.

Every scar tells a story: Former Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance patient ‘Braving the Shave’ to help future patients
On 22 October 2014, Claire was walking with her husband and two young daughters when she was struck by a motorbike that had mounted the kerb. Falling backwards, Claire landed on her head fracturing her skull. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Critical Care Team were called out to attend to Claire and her life-threatening injuries. Claire was treated and airlifted to University Hospital Southampton where she underwent emergency surgery.
She added: “I would like to shave my hair to bare my scars, tell my story and show my appreciation of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. Without them I would not be telling my story today. My aim is to raise enough money that will help benefit those who may need this vital service in the future.”
Fast forward to 22 October 2020, exactly six years to the day of her incident, Claire, 40, shaved her hair to show the scars she bares as a result of her injuries and the hours of surgery. Claire said: “With blood flowing from my head my husband and children feared the worst: I would die lying on the path. From that moment, I was completely unconscious. I don’t remember feeling anything physically or emotionally and have no memory of the event at all. Had it not been for the Air Ambulance taking me from Basingstoke to University Hospital Southampton, I would have died due to the pressure and bleed on my brain.”

Now You See Me: Marine Masters of Disguise In the world of wildlife, the word ‘camouflage’ can mean a lot of things. It sometimes refers to mimicry, which means being seen but incorrectly identified - think grasshoppers pretending to be dead leaves. The attributes we associate most with camouflage, however, are things which make animals hard to see at all; this is known as crypsis.

A clear advantage Invisibility may sound like the stuff of fantasy, but it’s surprisingly common in our seas. True transparency is tricky to achieve - any food eaten will be visible, and eyes must be opaque in order to function. But partial transparency can still be useful, especially in shallower waters where light is plentiful. Even the stealthiest animals are visible from above by the shadow they cast on the seabed, and from below by their silhouette. Since more light can pass through their bodies, transparent species have a diffuse outline from both angles, which makes it harder for predators and prey to identify them. Local examples of this superpower include the common shrimp, the moon jellyfish, and the aptly named transparent goby. Eels also have a glass-like developmental stage which is thought to help them survive the long trip from their birthplaces at sea to the rivers where they mature into adults.
Colourful characters If transparency isn’t an option then clever use of colour could be the answer. Sardines, herrings, and sea bass are all darker along their spines, which is called countershading. In natural lighting the tops of objects are illuminated while their undersides fall into shadow. These fish are darker on top and lighter underneath, creating an optical illusion that helps them blend into their environment. Seahorses, and flatfish like plaice, go one step

further: they use pigment-filled skin cells called chromatophores to match the colour and pattern of their surroundings. Cuttlefish are masters of this trick thanks to additional control over cells called papillae, which they can raise to alter the texture of their skin too.
Dress to impress Some of our marine species get crafty and enhance their natural camouflage with items from their environment. Dahlia anemones have sticky warts on their bodies which pick up pieces of shell, sand, and gravel. When their tentacles are retracted the anemones can be almost entirely obscured by these pieces of debris. Several species of spider crab are called ‘decorators’ due to their love of accessorising. The great spider crab, for instance, has a shell with a rough and knobbly surface; this acts like velcro, allowing the crab to disguise itself with pieces of seaweed and sponge. Over time, these decorations can become a home for tiny animals like hydroids, making each crab a walking habitat. Abi Webber
