Dear Wareham, Wool & Bere Regis, Wow, what a summer of events we have all had. Hasn’t it been great! Our sister company Dorset Publications was part of the Drug Free World campaign where we sponsored 1000’s of Truth About Drugs booklets given out in Weymouth during the Olympics and also at the Bournemouth Carnival. You can see some of our photos inside. The Jive Aces, the UK’s Number One swing band, were our fantastic entertainment for the day! There has also been the famous Bournemouth Air Festival, Great Dorset Steam Fair and the Dorset County Show. Not forgetting last, but by no means least, the completely awe-inspiring Paralympics! I think th e s u m mer h as en d ed with a r eal celebration. Did you notice, as there was much less bad news expressed during the Olympics that the whole of Britain came alive. Maybe we can learn from that. Anyway… Back to school for some now and back to work for the rest of us. Here in The Wareham District Directory there are interesting articles to read and of course our local business and trade’s people all ready to help you. Augustus Moore, disgraced clay tobacco pipe maker Early in 2010 a new gas pipe trench was dug to the east of Westport House (Purbeck District Council Offices) in Wareham and the workmen noticed that hundreds of broken clay tobacco pipes were scattered in the up-cast soil. Most of them were decorated with ‘fluting’ on the bowl and the letters ‘A’ and ‘M’ were impressed either on the bowl or the ‘spur’. Debris from a kiln where the pipes had been made was also recovered. Later that year a small excavation was undertaken by a group of archaeologists to try to pin point the kiln site (these are incredibly rare). Further exploratory work has recently taken place and all to no avail – if there was a kiln, it had been totally and absolutely demolished. All the evidence is there – the bricks and stone, many of them charred from extreme heat, fired clay which supported the pipes during firing, and thousands upon thousands of fragments of clay pipe. Why such destruction? The answer probably lies in events which happened in the early 1830s. A young man, Augustus Moore, a tobacco pipe maker, brought his wife Sarah and four young children from Wyke Regis to Wareham. A fifth child, a daughter Charlotte, was baptised in the church of Lady St Mary in 1833. Making pipes was obviously not a lucrative occupation and in 1834, Augustus (who may have been fond of a drink), persuaded three young men, John Hardy, Samuel Best and Joseph Bishop, to accompany him on stealing sprees. At the time he was 35, his accomplices were 23, 21 and 24 respectively. Firstly they stole a trunk containing jewellery and clothing from a cart in West Street. On another occasion they filched blue and white china from a shopkeeper also in West Street and finally they stole a shirt from a liquor seller. They were speedily brought to justice and were committed and tried at Dorchester Assizes on February 21st 1834. (Their trial was immediately before that of the Tolpuddle Martyrs.) The

verdict for all four was seven years hard labour, and transportation to Australia. Our man, Augustus Moore was sent to a prison hulk at Portsmouth and on 25th June that year together with another 259 prisoners set sail on the ‘Hooghley’ for the southern hemisphere. The ship docked in Sydney, New South Wales on 13th November after a five-month journey. Moore served his time and was granted a ‘certificate of freedom’ on 25th May 1841. Like many convicts he had plied his trade during his ‘confinement’ and the certificate states that he was employed as a clay tobacco pipe maker, a druggist and a groom. He stayed in Australia – a child Augustine Moore is recorded, but the trail goes cold….more research (in Australia) is needed!! His poor wife and children were left destitute; Sarah died a pauper in Wyke Regis in 1880. As for the Wareham pipe kiln, it was probably destroyed after A ugustus was tried at Dorchester. The little pipes with his initials ‘A’ and ‘’M’ are the poignant reminders of the man, his trade and the harsh realities of life in early Victorian England. On Wednesday 26th September at 7.30pm at Wareham Middle School, Lilian Ladle and Robert Lancaster will be talking about the excavation, Augustus Moore and early Victorian Wareham. Finds from the excavation will be on display and Robert (the clay pipe expert) is keen to look at and identify any pipes you may have. This event is free and open to all.

Parry Jones’ talk about the life of Thomas Hardy for the WarehamHemsbach Society at Wareham Library was well attended. From the library were evening views of North and South Street and the River Frome. Thomas Hardy left school at 16 to become an architect’s clerk. After a few years he devoted his life to writing novels with his wife Emma transcribing his drafts in copperplate handwriting for the publishers. He ended his career by writing poems which his second wife Florence typed. After the talk our chairman Myrna told us about the plans for the visit from Hemsbach from 6th to 10th September. This will include a service at 2.00pm on Sunday 9th at Lady St Mary Church followed by a procession to South Bridge to which everyone is welcome. Robin Brasher

Walk for Wildlife On the 23rd September, join us for the Dorset Walk for Wildlife. This year, this annual fundraising event for walkers of all levels and ages returns to Purbeck by popular demand. There are three routes to choose from, ranging from 6 to 22 miles. They will all start from Leeson House, a beautiful manor house situated in the village of Langton Matravers near Swanage. Each route will lead walkers along the coastline, giving everyone a chance to explore the famous Purbeck area: Dancing Ledge if you choose to walk 6 miles, St Aldhem’s Head if you choose 12 miles and Kimmeridge Bay for those who tackle 22. All walkers will pass through Durlston Country Park with its picturesque views and a castle, so make sure you take a camera! A little further down the road,
walkers will pass Anvil Point Lighthouse, which is built of local stone. For those with children, there will be exciting and educational activities on your return. The grounds of Leeson House will also be open to explore, making this a fantastic day out for the whole family. You can register and start fundraising today. Drug Free message at Bournemouth Carnival Stephen and I, with Dorset Publications (sister company to Purbeck Publications), were proud sponsors of the Drug Free World entry at the recent Bournemouth Carnival. 5,000 “Truth About Drugs” booklets were given out in the streets by more than 25 enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers. The Jive Aces, the UK’s No. One Swing Band who recently got into the semi finals of Britain’s Got Talent were our fantastic entertainment and we won first place for the best dressed float! The Jive Aces are internationally known and regularly play at local venues here in the South. They are amazing! You can see them at www.jiveaces.com. The whole day at the Carnival was great fun, well organised and very up beat. The sun was shining and a

Forthcoming Events at the Pop In Place …. The Pop In Place Macmillan Coffee Morning Friday 28th September 10am until 12noon We will be holding a Macmillan Fundraiser on the 28th September in the Lower Hall where we will have a special tombola stall and bring and buy and homemade cakes and a raffle for Macmillan. Please pop in and show your support. The Pop In Place Cabaret and Disco in aid of the Stroke Association On Saturday 6th October at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. We have now finalised the acts for this year’s cabaret and it is looking to be a very special evening indeed. We have fantastic dancers and a talented pianist/singer song writer Karl Lattimer who amongst many other things has won the Purbeck’s Got Talent competition and has also appeared on television, there will be some comedy, an instrumentalist, duets and talented soloists and the newly formed female choir Girls Out Loud who will perform for the first time in public a superb rendition of the Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber Diamond Jubilee Song “ Sing” Tickets are £5 each this will include a light supper, but you will need to bring your own drinks. After the cabaret and the supper there will be the Julie Lye Disco to round off the evening. Please do come along and support this enjoyable event in aid of the Stroke Association.
