News from Westminster November is of course the month where we remember those who have fought for our country and lost their lives in conflict. Remembrance Day has a special poignancy this year, as it is 100 years to the day since the First World War ended. There are a variety of special events to mark the centenary across Dorset, and I will be attending several of them. I will be starting early with Battle O’er bagpipes in Poole Park, then later attending the morning parade in Wareham, bell ringing in Lytchett Matravers in the afternoon followed by the parade in Corfe Mullen. At sundown I will be in Wimborne for the lighting of a beacon in the cemetary. Six million men served in the First World War, and over 725,000 never returned. Nearly 2 million who did return were disabled, and the British Legion was formed in 1921 to care for those who had suffered as a result of service in the Armed Forces during the war, whether through their own service or through that of a husband, father or son. The first ever Poppy Appeal was held in 1921 and has been running ever since. The Poppy was used as a symbol of Remembrance and hope, and all the poppies are produced by the Poppy factory, which employs veterans and helps them get into work. But Remembrance Day is not just about the First or Second World Wars. It is also a chance to remember and honour those who have died serving our country more recently. Earlier this year I was delighted that my nominee for an NHS 70 award won the excellence in mental care award. This was the Dorset Armed Forces Community Health and Wellbeing Project which aims to reduce health inequalities for veterans and families of both retired and serving personnel. It is important that we continue to support our Armed Forces and veterans, both nationally and locally. Over the summer I met with one of our local veterans who was chosen to represent our country on the international stage. Alan White is an ex- Royal Marine and was selected as one of 72 military veterans to represent the UK in October’s

Invictus Games in Sydney. The Invictus Games is an international adaptive multisport event, created by Prince Harry in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans take part in sports. Alan has been supported in his efforts by many local people, the British Legion and Help for Heroes. At the time of writing, the games have not yet started, but I am certain that Alan will have done us, and his family proud. However you choose to observe Remembrance Day, it is important that the enormity of the debt of gratitude we owe to our armed forces – both past and present – is remembered, both now and for generations to come. Last opportunity to comment on draft Purbeck Local Plan The draft Purbeck Local Plan 2018-2034 will be published between 22 October and 3 December 2018. During this period, people can comment on the Plan and its policies. All comments received will then be passed to an independent planning inspector who will examine the plan before it can be adopted in autumn 2019 and used to determine planning applications. Purbeck District Council has engaged with town and parish councils, individuals and residents’ groups to produce the draft Purbeck Local Plan. It has also been the subject of public consultations in 2015, 2016 and 2018. Many people expressed concern during the 2016 consultation about the number of extra homes, so the Council pledged to fully review the plan and to look at the possibility of restricting the number of second homes and providing more affordable homes. New guidance was received from the Government in autumn 2017 which estimated fewer extra new homes were needed: 1,700 compared with 3,080 extra new homes specified in 2016. Following this, the most recent consultation took place in early 2018 and focused primarily on housing. Over 8,000 residents, businesses and organisations completed a paper questionnaire and telephone survey. Taking into account feedback received during the consultations and technical information and data, the Purbeck Local Plan was drafted and presented to Purbeck District Council on Tuesday 9 October 2018. At the meeting, Councillor Gary Suttle, Leader of Purbeck District Council, commented: “We

said throughout the review process we would listen and we have. The plan before you is a very different to that consulted on in 2016 – half the numbers – in my opinion a huge improvement. “I hope this document will get us to an adopted plan, which is the most important thing for the defence of this district. Without a valid plan, we are open to the threat of speculative developers.” Councillor Suttle continued: “Many people have worked hard on this draft plan, not just Councillors and District Council staff, but local people and groups who have been invaluable in bringing up many points and improvements that we have been able to adopt. “It has been impossible to get the numbers as low as some of you would like, but together we have persevered to draft this plan. “We have listened throughout the process and I reiterate that we are still listening and will make changes if we need to. The people of the district remain our priority.” People should submit their comments online at Purbeck-consult.objective.co.uk/portal/ between 22 October and 3 December 2018. Only comments received during this period can be considered by the inspector. Talking about Wildlife...

There’s something wild about Brownsea Dorset Wildlife Trust is launching a new and exciting project called Wild Brownsea designed to bring people in Dorset closer to nature and needs your help to secure the future of a unique island.

Over the next three years we will look to upgrade the visitor facilities on the island’s nature reserve, while reducing the impact of visitor numbers on the fragile island habitat. By recognising the islands full potential as the perfect place to offer a richer wildlife experience, we will inspire future generations to protect our precious wildlife and wildplaces. But we need to reach our fundraising target by January 2019, for every £1 you donate the wildlife of Brownsea gets £10. For such a small island Brownsea has had an eventful past and now looks to play an equally important role in the future of wildlife conservation in Dorset. It has been gifted by Kings and Queens, set alight and bombed by the Luftwaﬀe in WWII and even hosted the first Boy Scout camp in 1907. It’s a wonder it’s survived to tell the tale. Luckily for us it has endured and offers Brownsea Island Lagoon

such a biodiverse habitat for wildlife to ﬂourish. Nicki Tutton; our Brownsea Island Engagement Officer talks passionately about the project “Having worked and volunteered on the island for so long, I can see its amazing potential to inspire the public, as it inspired me, and to make the most of the opportunity to encourage future generations to care about wildlife and conservation.” With our fundraising deadline fast approaching we need your help in reaching our target before January 2019. Up, up and away... screaming away. It was a far cry from my blissful wander with nature. Fun though I have to say, but shush, don’t tell the boys that! Stephen and Hayden had a thrilling ride on Zip Wire, while I looked after the bags (a rather good excuse…). Stephen, who does not like heights, tried to get off rather quickly at the end and looked a little white, but I think he enjoyed it! Actually, both he and Hayden were grinning from ear to ear. It gave them that adrenaline rush these boys so yearn. Oh for that cup of coffee… The whole day was truly enjoyable. Tim Smit wanted to create a “symbol of optimism where ordinary people working together could do the nearly impossible.” What an amazing purpose. Nellie was truly impressed when we recounted our day to her. Ever optimistic herself and always happy when we have a family day out, she also grinned from headlight to headlight. Exclusive 100th Birthday Celebration raises thousands for Dorset Blind Association Dorset Blind Association, a charity helping blind and partially sighted people across Dorset to live happy lives, held their exclusive Centenary Ball took place on Saturday 13th October at the Hilton Hotel, Bournemouth. The prestigious 100th Anniversary celebration raised a phenomenal £22,705 on the night: an incredible amount and also the most that the charity has ever raised in one event. The event, which was kindly sponsored by long-running supporter Blue Sky Financial Planning, saw over 160 guests put in an appearance to celebrate an impressive 100 years of Dorset Blind Association, with guests arriving in their finest dinner suits and posh frocks to a red carpet welcome complimentary glass of champagne, followed by a three-course dinner with wine and coffee. The Centenary celebrations were thoroughly embraced by the guests, who tried their hands at the Viva Las Vegas Casino, danced the night away to the fantastic sounds of Swing Unlimited Big Band and participated in the accompanying raffle and auction. To get the guests up and moving after dinner, a fun and thoroughly entertaining game of Heads or Tails was played to music. Guests had the opportunity to meet the charity’s patrons, Lord and Lady Julian and Emma Fellowes, and DBA President, James Weld. On display was an exhibition of Dorset Blind Association’s extensive history, featuring a timeline of the most important milestones in the past 100 years of this local charity. Jonathan Holyhead, Chief Executive Officer of Dorset Blind Association, said:

“The evening was a wonderful, happy way to help celebrate our centenary. I am absolutely thrilled by the amount raised and I cannot thank people enough for their generosity. This money will go towards the provision of future services and support for blind and partially sighted people across Dorset, so a great many people will benefit from it and on their behalf I want to say “thank you”, again, to everyone who helped make the Ball such a huge success.” The charity have now held their annual Ball for 4 years, and will be returning with their Masquerade theme next year on Saturday 26th October. Dorset Blind Association receive no statutory funding, relying wholly on the kind support and goodwill of the local community to keep their vital services going. Purbeck Youth & Community Foundation As an area we are actively involved in supporting a number of young carers. At the start of October 68 young people went on a long day trip to Thorpe Park Fright Night with youth workers on a school inset day. “The Youth club enabled me to go and have a great time with my friends.” This is just one of the many events open to our members and young people throughout the area. We have residential trips, bowling, ringos, Splashdown the list goes on. The young people are at the heart of our youth club and a number of them volunteer to help run the junior sessions on a Tuesday evening with the help of staff and a number of our trustee volunteers. We have developed over 20 young volunteers over the last couple of years. This has involved child protection training, introduction to youth work and senior member training. At least 2 of these supporters are looking for careers in social care, education and support. The Monday evening sees around 30 - 40 of our year 9 up group. Many have been members since the start of Purbeck Youth and Community Foundation in 2016. We support staff who run sessions in Corfe Castle on a Wednesday and Wool on a Thursday. Some of our volunteers have supported the Purbeck Gateway club trip on Swanage railway, taken part in intergenerational days, fun days for the community and consistently support our many fund raising activities.

We are planning a team for the Lions swim marathon mid October. The police crime commissioner has supported by helping with costs for pitch hire and equipment. We also have an excellent relationship with the local police and have engaged in a number of football matches members v police in a bid to strengthen community relations. We are delighted to have a counsellor from Dorset MIND in the club once a week. Feedback from young people is very positive on the difference it’s made to them. Of course many also appreciate talking with our qualified youth workers and quite a few have come back as adults to catch up with Kev! Spring Flowering Bulbs

Many bulbs, such as crocus, daffodils and snowdrops will increase naturally in most sites and with different flowering times there will be a succession of interest. If planted in your flower beds, the dying foliage will be hidden by growing herbaceous plants and shrubs. Bulbs are best planted in groups of similar colour and a wonderful show will be created if they are combined with flowers of contrasting colour that bloom at the same time. Try tulips planted with forget-me-nots or wallflowers.

Under trees with no leaves, bulbs will get any available sunlight so will grow happily and give a welcome splash of colour when nothing else has yet woken up. Bulbs can be planted in grass - perhaps in the lawn or a grassy bank - as long as the foliage has time to die down before the first mowing. Grass protects bulbs from mice and squirrels. Try Anemone blanda, chionodoxa, crocus, fritillaria, daffodils (narcissus). Some bulbs are best lifted each year such as tulips and to make this easier you could try planting them in large pots and sinking them in the ground. After the leaves have died down, lift the bulbs and let them dry out. Store somewhere cool and dry and replant in October/November for a spring display. If buying new bulbs, plant as soon as possible and before they start growing. For instance, most daffodils will start producing roots by late summer and other bulbs by midautumn. One exception is snowdrops. These are best bought 'in the green' which means the leaves are already growing and they are then planted and left to spread. Bulbs should always be planted with, at the very least, 2-3 times their own depth of soil above them or even more if the soil is very light. If bulbs become overcrowded, lift them in the dormant season after the foliage has died down. Clean off the soil, leave them to dry then store in paper (not plastic) bags to await replanting.

Food & Drink

Naturally good... This is similar to the classic cauliflower cheese but has the added kick of wholegrain mustard which pairs really well with the mature cheddar cheese. The recipe uses a small amount of corn starch/corn flour to thicken the sauce rather than using a traditional roux, this reduces the carbohydrate levels while still making a smooth creamy sauce.

MUSTARD & CHEDDAR BROCCOLI BAKE Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 large head of broccoli 4oz (120ml) heavy cream (double cream) 3 oz (85 g) mature cheddar cheese (extra sharp cheddar cheese) 3 tbsp parmesan cheese (shredded) 1 tsp wholegrain mustard 1 tsp corn starch (corn flour) dissolved in 1 tbsp water Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Method: Preheat the oven to 200°c

 First prepare the broccoli by cutting it into even sized



florets. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and add the broccoli. Cook for approximately 3 minutes to slightly soften the broccoli, but not cook it through. Drain and rinse under cold running water to cool. Set to one side while you make the cheese sauce. To make the sauce, place the cream and mustard into a saucepan on a medium low heat, heat the mixture and once it comes to a simmer add the cheddar cheese and stir through until melted. While stirring add the corn starch mixture and continue to cook for a further minute or so until the sauce thickens, add salt and pepper to taste. Make sure that the broccoli is well drained - pat the broccoli dry with paper towels to remove any excess water. Place the broccoli into a baking dish and spoon over the cheese sauce; make sure the broccoli is well covered. Sprinkle over the parmesan cheese and a pinch of paprika if you wish. Place into the oven and bake for approximately 20 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
