Hello Wareham, Wool & Bere Regis! Dare I say it but we are fast approaching that festive time of year… Indeed we are looking forward to taking our Hayden to see Father Christmas at Paultons Park for his Birthday this year. As he will be 9 I reckon this is my last chance! Imagine my surprise a few weeks ago when I got a phone call from Father Christmas - it turned out to be a lovely local man who has played the part every season for over 60 years! I am sure I had that same ‘trip of the heart’ when he said who he was. Do we ever really grow up? As you might be thinking of opening your doors to the family… or escaping to other climes… perhaps a few things need doing around the house or garden? If you are anything like us, ‘spare’ time seems to be getting less and less. Why not let someone else do the work for you? You will find The Wareham District Directory full of local tradespeople who are more than willing to give you a hand to make this year’s special season a great success. Lucy’s recipe corner Choccy coconut balls Crush up the biscuits in a food bag (you can bash them with a rolling pin) and pop into a mixing bowl. Add the cocoa and coconut and stir together. Pour in the condensed milk. Ingredients for 5 servings Scoop out a small handful of the mixture and roll 250g digestive biscuits into a ball then roll in the extra coconut. 45g desiccated coconut (plus a bit extra for rolling the balls in) Keep making balls until all the mixture is gone 5 tablespoons cocoa powder then pop into the fridge for 30 minutes to set. 1 tin condensed milk (397g) Yum!

PURBECK CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL WEEKEND THURS 29th NOVEMBER - SUN 2nd DECEMBER
KINGSTON CHURCH This year, in the heart of the Purbeck Villages, at the end of November and during the first weekend of December we have a really special Christmas Tree Festival at St. James’ Church, Kingston. Local businesses, community groups and families have been invited to sponsor a tree for 4 days, decorating it with unique decorations, together with an opportunity to provide some publicity about their group. We shall celebrate advent with approximately 30 real trees, leading to an illuminated wooden nativity tableau, which will create a wonderful sight for us all to enjoy. There will be presentations of live music and local singers at certain times throughout the festival, and also an even in g con cert on Saturday 2nd December. We also hope to hear the 10 church bells ringing and on Sunday 2nd Dec familiar Christmas carols will be played on the splendid organ. There will be plenty of seasonal refreshments and invitations to a wide range of Christmas events across the two Benefices of the Purbeck Hills and the Corfe Valley. Please come and be inspired, as we aim to bring the focus back onto Jesus this Christmas, so that everyone who visits the Festival will be reminded of the true meaning of CHRIST mas. Entry is free, with donations being shared between the Children’s Hospice, Julia’s House, and St James’ Church. Please see

The Rotary Dorset Bike Ride raises over £10,000 for Cancer Research UK The Rotary Club of Wareham held a very successful bike ride in aid of Cancer Research on 14th October. They had over 300 riders taking part, riding one of 3 routes consisting of 50, 20 or 10 miles through Dorset great countryside. The event was originally planned for 23rd September but they had to postpone the ride due to terrible weather conditions that would have made the ride dangerous. However this Sunday the weather was brilliant sunshine for the whole day. With the choice of 3 routes, the ride was ideal for all ages and experience. The youngest rider was just 6 years old while the eldest was 78. Many of the riders obtained sponsors for their ride, some raising several hundreds of pounds for Cancer Research UK, with at least two riders raising over £1000 in sponsorship. One of the riders, Sandra Levitte (see photo), who is recovering from cancer, raised over £1500 in sponsorship. She said she has had great support from her friends and family and was so pleased that the date of the ride was between her chemotherapy treatments. A true star! The final amount raised for Cancer Research UK will not be known for a few weeks, but the Rotary Club of Wareham is expecting the amount to exceed £10,000. Cyclexperience of Wareham one of the bike ride supporters have donated a bike to be drawn from those that raise at least £450 in sponsorship. The draw will be made in a few weeks once the sponsorship money has been collected.

Charity Concert stars Military Band Bring along your flags and bunting for Last Night of the Proms with Wessex Military Band who will once again be in concert on Saturday, 17 November at 7.00pm at the Wareham Middle School in aid of The Brian Clark Breath of Life Fund. The concert will feature both traditional marches and old favourites together with a few new pieces ending in a rousing rendition of Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory. This is the third annual concert by the band organised to raise money for the British Lung Foundation in Brian’s Memory. To date the Fund stands at nearly £3,400 with £2,340 being raised from the previous concerts and Grand Raffles held during the evening. Brian was born in Wareham and was very well known and much respected around the town and the Purbecks and was regularly seen playing in Wareham Town Band where he played for over 50 years in total until ill health forced him to give up his beloved music some 6 years ago. For most people though, Brian was best known as ‘Nobby’ or ‘Yogi’, the South Dorset coach driver that took hundreds of children to school and back during the 1960’s & 70’s from the surrounding areas to Wareham School. Brian sadly passed away in March 2009 after suffering from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) after which the family set up the Fund in Brian’s name and memory while raising money for this very worthwhile charity. 100% of the fund goes to the British Lung Foundation and the aim is to raise a further £1,000 from the evening.

Wessex Military Band (formerly the Army Air Corp Band) is based in Bridport and includes musicians from all over the south of England. It recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and since last year’s concert have performed at the Olympics in Weymouth, played at the Menton Lemon Festival in the South of France and a festival in Dulman, Germany. Tickets for the concert are £5 to include refreshments and the evening will include a grand raffle. Wednesday November 21st at 7.30 pm at Wareham Middle School Dr Karen Mew will give a talk ‘Domesday and the Isle of Purbeck’ In 1086 a huge survey was undertaken on behalf of William the Conqueror to assess exactly how much, in money terms, his new kingdom was worth (and you thought that the thirst for acquisition of wealth was something new!!). From this document known as the Domesday Book, an enormous amount of information is available to build up a picture of what life was like in southeast Dorset 1000 years ago.

Winter Wildlife The month is November. The air feels cooler and the nights are drawing in. The leaves react to this change as they transform into vivid shades of amber, red and brown. These coloured leaves are a sign for us and for wildlife that winter is approaching. Summer migrant birds who visit the UK for summer have migrated back ‘home’, heading to warmer, milder countries. However, winter migrants now appear from the north, east and even some from the south; look out for bramblings, redwings, fieldfares and jays. There are several things you can do this month to prepare your garden for winter. As natural water sources begin to freeze over, birdbaths become a vital source of drinking water. It is important that you clean the birdbath regularly to avoid the spread of disease. Make sure to top it up and remove any sheets of ice! Food will soon be scarce as berries are over and the ground hardens, preventing the b ir d s f r o m c a tc h in g worms. You may choose from a range of bird foods, but fruit is equally valuable. Birds can also eat household scraps such as grated cheese, pinhead oatmeal and black sunflower seeds. There are special models of bird feeder to keep out rats and

squirrels, but birds such as robins, greenfinches and bramblings prefer their food on a bird table. If you do use a bird table, keep it away from cover or high vegetation; predators will launch themselves onto feeding birds if the table is within reach. Hedgehogs should be hibernating around now and if you have a hedgehog box you may already have a visitor. Hiding one under a pile of leaves has been reported as particularly successful. Do check any piles before making a bonfire as a hedgehog could already be tucked up in there! If you have a pond, it is important the pond does not become completely frozen. Make sure there are areas of habitat on the ponds edge, such as logs and rough vegetation, as these can be used as hibernation sites by small reptiles. Judy Godsall
