Well we certainly had a cold spell for a while but spring is officially here On 20th March! A time many of us look forward to. New life, new growth and warmer weather! Time for a spring clean and out with the old and in with the new. I love it. Next month we will have our first adventure with “Daichi The Dashing Dude”! He is the new Purbeck Publications campervan and he is a bit of a character. There may be no holding him back… All good fun and I can’t wait to get back on the road visiting some new and exciting places right here on our beautiful South Coast.

New draft Purbeck Local Plan progresses to next stage A new Local Plan to help guide and shape future development in the area currently covered by Purbeck District Council has been submitted to an independent planning inspector for examination.

The Council engaged with town and parish councils, individuals, residents’ groups and planning professionals to produce the draft plan. It has also been the subject of public consultations in 2015, 2016 and 2018. Councillor Gary Suttle, Leader of Purbeck District Council, said: “We started reviewing the Purbeck Local Plan Part 1 in 2015, and many people expressed concerns during the 2016 consultation particularly about the number of extra homes in the plan. “We listened to their feedback and pledged to undertake a full review of the plan. The people of Purbeck are passionate about their local area and rightly so. Throughout the process, local opinions and views have been of paramount importance in shaping the plan we have submitted to the inspector. We thank all who have been involved.”

Schedule which will be examined alongside the local plan. The levy raises funds from qualifying new development to provide new infrastructure.

The examination process An inspector (appointed by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary of State) will now conduct an examination of the Purbeck Local Plan and CIL schedule. It is anticipated that the examination will include public oral hearing sessions. If the inspector considers changes are needed, there will be a further opportunity to comment prior to adoption by Dorset Council The plan will then be used to determine planning applications and secure funding within the area of the new authority currently covered by Purbeck District Council. Using feedback received from the consultations and technical information gathered, the Purbeck Local Plan was prepared in 2018 and an opportunity provided last autumn to comment on the draft. News from Westminster One of the challenges of being an MP is the balancing of time between legislating in London and being back in the constituency visiting and speaking to local residents, charities, businesses and the like. During a normal week, I spend Monday to Thursday in London, before returning home to Dorset. Fridays and weekends are the time when I can hold surgeries, visit businesses and charities, and catch up with local councillors and other organisations. When Parliament is not sitting, during recess, I spend my time in Dorset, and I usually take the opportunity to hold more street surgeries, visit local people and catch up with what I have missed during the week! As I write, the news has been announced that the recess in February has been cancelled, in order for MPs to spend more time on Brexit legislation in London. There have also been more Fridays when Parliament has been sitting. In my view, this is absolutely the right decision, to enable us to get the job done. It does mean that I will have spent more time in London in the last few months than normal, although I have been continuing to help constituents here in Dorset on a daily basis! I recently had a very interesting meeting with Dorset Community Foundation, finding out about their work in the community, and how they can help people and organisations in Mid Dorset and North Poole. I have also discussed energy saving with the Citizens Advice Bureau in Wareham, and met representatives from local businesses to discuss security and development. I have also met religious community leaders and had discussions about school funding and supporting local young people with head teachers and governors. I was honoured and humbled to be asked to light a candle at the Holocaust Memorial Day service in Wimborne, in what was an extremely moving service. It is important that we continue to mark this tragic period of history, and ensure that we never forget those who suffered. In Parliament there have been a range of issues as well as Brexit that are being debated. Part of my work in Parliament is as part of the European Scrutiny Committee (ESC). This is one of the Select Committees that examine the work of parliament – there is one for each government department, and they are made up of MPs from all parties. Some committees are quite high profile, as they conduct inquiries into topics such as phone hacking. The committees meet regularly, and the

ESC has the job of examining over 1,000 EU documents a year. This may be on any topic – recent discussions have been about seasonal clock changes, the European Defence Industry and the UK contribution to the EU budget. The committee looks at each proposal, and then decides whether to ask questions of the government, or refer it for a debate. This may then be debated in the House of Commons, or in a European Committee. The work of Select Committees is webcast through the parliament TV website www.parliamentlive.tv where you can also watch what is happening in the House of Commons and House of Lords. Coming up in March it is World Book Day. I know that this will please all those with children at school who need costumes at short notice. Sadly – or should I say thankfully! - Parliament has not yet adopted the idea of dress up days. Perhaps I could suggest this to the relevant authorities! PURBECK BRANCH - URGENT APPEAL This very well loved organisation which arranges trips from the Purbeck area to provincial theatres (generally monthly) is in desperate need of new committee members to continue the smooth running of the club. Following resignations from longstanding committee members, we urgently need a secretary, another person to book theatre tickets and coaches, and someone else to keep the membership records up to date. Computer literacy would

be a most helpful asset. The Committee meets every other month to look at future shows coming up in the region and decide which ones to see, and the work is shared between the whole committee. Without any replacement help, it is likely that the club will have to stop running, so please consider if you can help in any way. Notes from...

WarehamTown Museum Wareham Town Museum opens for the season on Saturday 6 April. Join us for the grand opening at 2pm. There will be fun things for youngsters to do in the corn exchange, and refreshments will be available. 2018 was a successful year, with new displays and several events. In February we held an open day where old photos of Wareham were on display. In June the Wareham Saxon sword returned on loan from the County Museum at Dorchester. Professor David Hinton of Southampton University gave a lecture on the sword in the corn exchange which was so popular that there was standing room only for many. The ghost walk in October was enjoyed by those who braved the rain! We welcomed 6,493 visitors, a decrease on previous years, probably because of the fine summer weather; museums nationally had a similar experience. Entrance to the museum is free, but we raised significant funds from donations in the museum and at events. Wareham Town Museum tells the story of the Wareham area from prehistoric times to the present day. It is owned by Wareham Town Council and is run by volunteers. In the open season, April to October, a team of 25-30 of us work two-hour shifts to keep the museum open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. Thatâ€™s about 1,080 hours, with a notional value of over ÂŁ10,000. Running the museum behind the scenes takes as many hours again, year round. Here are just some of the tasks involved: creating displays; cataloguing objects which are donated (we collect objects with a local connection); ensuring that temperature,

Purbeck Youth & Community Foundation We are very grateful to our young volunteers who help us in various ways and we thought it would be good to hear directly from them. “Three years ago I joined PYCF. I came to make friends after moving schools due to a bullying incident. Upon joining the club not only did I make new friends but was offered the support I needed. After 2 years I was offered a volunteering job here where I gained some really helpful qualifications such as my Duke of Edinburgh award and a level 2 youth work course. These really helped me get my confidence back as I learned new skills and met new people Each week is different and we are even involved with BBC young reporters project.” “When I started volunteering at the youth club I was nervous about how things would go and how young people would be. After the first week the other volunteers made me feel more comfortable and more engaged. Volunteering allowed me to come out of my shell and talk to others easier. I have learnt how to deal with different situations placed in front of me and how to deal with people.”

Talking about Wildlife...

Species of the month Can you remember the last time you saw a hedgehog? Or a robin? Did you used to see them, but perhaps not recently? These are the kinds of questions that we, Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT), need the answers to. And we’d like the public to help us.

In 2015 DWT started a citizen science project, ‘Species of the Month’ – asking the public to let us know when they’ve seen a certain species for each month of the year. Since, not only have thousands of records ﬂown in, but so have your anecdotes about wildlife experiences, with many of you sharing your delight from a regular or occasional wildlife visitor in your local patch or garden. Recording and looking for both rare and common wildlife allows conservationists to monitor peaks and declines in wildlife populations. Something that’s in abundance now, might not be in 5 years’ time and these records could help identify trends to understand why this has happened. Wildlife also doesn’t recognise boundaries – it goes anywhere there is habitat and food, so recording what’s in your garden or local green spaces is just as important as conservation teams recording which species are on nature reserves. So, this new year, can you ‘look out’ for wildlife? Past species we’ve been interested in finding out more about include the easily identifiable robin, brimstone, house sparrow and hedgehog. If it’s something a little rarer, we’ll give you all the information you need to be able to identify it. In March we’re looking for the bee-ﬂy pollinator, to kick start our Get Dorset Buzzing campaign!

ABOUT THE DARK-EDGED BEE-FLY

The Dark-edged Bee-fly, or ‘Large Beefly’, looks rather like a bumble bee, with a long, straight proboscis that it uses to feed on nectar from spring flowers, such as primroses and violets. It is on the wing in the early spring, when it can often be seen in sunny patches. In flight, it is even more like a bee as it produces a high-pitched buzz. This species of bee-fly is common, but the Heath and Mottled Bee-flies are much rarer.

HOW TO IDENTIFY

Looking like a bee, the Dark-edged Bee-fly has yellowy-brown hair on its body, long, spindly legs, and a long proboscis. The wings have dark markings along their leading edges, hence it’s common name. There are several species of bee-fly in the UK, which can be very difficult to tell apart; the Darkedged Bee-fly has a dark edge, while others have plainer, translucent wings. By Sally Welbourn

Report urges retirees to register LPAs to avoid ‘later-life financial crisis’ A new report suggests that four-fifths of retirees who are taking advantage of pension freedoms may face a ‘later-life financial crisis’. According to a report from Zurich, the risk – estimated to affect 345,000 retirees – stems from their lack of having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), potentially hindering them from obtaining financial help should they become ill or lose mental capacity. Without providing a family member or trusted friend with the legal authority to make this kind of decision, the Courts would have to become involved should the individual no longer be able to make decisions themselves. Commenting on the findings of the report Mr Skilton of Dorset & Wight Wills highlighted the important purpose which LPA’s serve in later life decision making, particularly since the pension freedoms were introduced.

He said: “Registering an LPA has become even more important since the pension reforms. Thousands of people are now making complex decisions on their pension into old age, when the risk of developing a sudden illness or condition such as dementia increases. “Despite this, many are unprepared for a sudden health shock or a decline in their mental abilities. The time to set up an LPA is well before you need it, and pension providers should be highlighting this to their customers. “With more and more people moving into drawdown, this is creating a ticking time bomb that could leave thousands of people facing a potential later-life financial crisis. ‘Walk For Hope’ Means Cancer Patients Never Have To Walk Alone Wessex Cancer Trust’s biggest annual fundraising event, Walk for Hope, returns to the New Forest for its third year on Sunday 9 June, and organisers would love more walkers than ever to stride out and raise vital funds for local people living with cancer. About 300 people took part in the 2018 walk, raising over £50,000. New for 2019 is the option of a five-mile route, alongside the ten and 20-mile distances, making the event even more accessible for supporters of all ages and abilities. Philip Wilson, who raised £670 by taking part in the ten mile event in 2018, said: “I work for John Lewis in Southampton which chose Wessex Cancer Trust’s Waterside Cancer Support Centre in Hythe as its charity of the year, and wanted to take part in this event to show my personal support to those living with cancer. What an emotional day it was. I met people who’ve had cancer and won, have cancer and are winning, and someone who has cancer but it’s incurable. I burst into tears Philip Wilson

reading the dedications on people’s backs, I had a moment in the middle when I thought about the many people I’ve known throughout my 38 years whose lives have been affected by cancer, and again when I crossed the finish line out of sheer pride. Gardening Tips

On Your Plot Getting the upper hand Spring should really be on its way by the end of this month and there’ll be plenty of jobs to keep you busy on your plot. There’s nothing quite like sowing seeds and the thrill of watching those first tiny seedlings appearing just a week or two later. Weather permitting the soil should be warm enough to be sowing outdoors in March. Your new seedlings will need all the help that you can give them if they are to ﬂourish so don’t forget the weeding and pest control too!

Jobs for March :-

• Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough. • Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!) • Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in. • Plant first early potatoes later in the month. • Keep on top of the weeding and pest control. • Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge. Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6°C are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as ﬂeece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will

help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest. Take note also of the depth that the diﬀerent seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks. As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred. Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeds, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil. Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!

Naturally good... Apricot and passion fruit â€˜flan de Quesoâ€™ with spiced roasted pears

Ingredients for 4-6 servings: For the flan 120ml full fat milk 240ml double cream 100g full fat cream cheese 2 free range eggs 8 large moist dried apricots 1 tbsp honey One passion fruit 2 tbsp lemon juice For the roasted pears 2 pears Pinch ground cinnamon Pinch ground ginger 1 tbsp unsalted butter

1. Preheat the oven to 300F/150c. 2. Place the milk and dried apricots into a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Then remove from the heat and leave to rest for 20 minutes to let the apricots soak up some moisture and become plump. 3. Prepare the passion fruit by scraping out the seeds into a sieve above a bowl, use a metal spoon to scrape the seeds against the sieve to remove as much of the juice as possible, discard the seeds and add the juice to the mixture. 4. Place all of the ingredients for the flan into a blender and blitz on full speed for 2 minutes until all of the ingredients are well combined and smooth, pass this mixture through a sieve into a jug and then use this to fill 4 ramekins (or 6 ramekins if you want smaller portions). 5. Place the ramekins into a large roasting tray and pour in enough hot, but not boiling, water to come halfway up their outsides. (This is called a bain-marie or water bath). 6. Place the bain-marie onto the center shelf of the oven being careful not to spill any water into the ramekins which will ruin the flans (a tip to make life easier is to place the baking dish with the ramekins halfway into the oven before adding the water to the dish). 7. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the custards are just set but still a bit wobbly in the middle. Remove the ramekins from the water and set aside to cool to room temperature. Chill until needed for at least 3 hours but preferably overnight. 8. When you are ready to serve the flans, prepare the roasted pears. Peel, core and slice the pears and place onto a baking sheet. Sprinkle the pears with the ground ginger and cinnamon and add the butter. Place into a preheated oven at 350F/180c for approximately 20 minutes until the pears are soft and the edges are turning golden brown and caramelized. 9. Spoon the roasted pears on top of the flans and serve.
