News from Westminster My family and I very much enjoy walking in the countryside in Dorset. It always makes me both sad and angry to see the amount of litter by the side of the road. I frequently arrive home after walking the dog with handfuls of discarded rubbish. It is such a blight on the landscape, and I am pleased that local councils are going to have stronger powers to fine people who throw litter from cars. Therefore, I am once again very pleased to be supporting the Great British Spring Clean which is taking place from 2nd -4th March, the national clean-up campaign led by Keep Britain Tidy. Last year 70,000 wheelie bins of rubbish were collected over one weekend. Individuals, groups, families, schools, businesses and clubs can all sign up and make a difference. Register at www. keepbritaintidy.org/gbspringclean and let’s clean up our country. I know there are some very active community groups who help to keep our local areas tidy, and I would like to thank them for all their hard work. I know that in Westminster we are keen to reduce the scourge of litter and environmental pollution. We are working towards plastic-free supermarket aisles, and we recently banned microbeads to reduce the amount of plastic going into our oceans. I was delighted to hear that local Dorset brewery Hall & Woodhouse are phasing out plastic straws in their pubs, and instead using biodegradable paper alternatives. Last year I signed the Wimborne War on Waste pledge to reduce the number of disposable cups that I use. I also signed the pledge in Westminster. As a result, I have requisitioned my wife’s sparkly reusable cup, much to her dismay. There are an increasing number of outlets that offer a discount if you bring

your own cup, or allow you to fill a reusable water bottle for free. We all need to do our bit to help the environment. As well as reducing the amount of rubbish we produce, we can also think a bit more about what we do with our rubbish. There are a range of local schemes to re-use items, rather than just throwing them away, with collections in local libraries and community centres across Dorset. Notes from...

WarehamTown Museum Dipply the Diplodocus has taken up temporary residence at the Dorset County Museum in Dorchester and is a very popular attraction. You can see dinosaurs in Wareham Town Museum too - footprints and models anyway! We have the fossilised cast of a footprint of an Iguanodon, a vegetarian dinosaur which roamed here 125 million years ago. A graphic shows the lower body and feet of an Iguanodon. The graphic has a 3D head, made by dinosaur specialist Dougal Dixon, who lives in Wareham. Dougal also made a model of a Juratyrant, a feathered carnivore which was an ancestor of the fearsome Tyrannosaurus Rex. It is based on fossilised remains found at Kimmeridge, the only known find of this species

anywhere. The model is also the only one anywhere! You can find out more about dinosaurs in the museum and on our website www.wtm.org.uk The museum opens for the season on 30th March at 2pm. Join us to celebrate, and to welcome back the Wareham Saxon sword, on loan from the Dorset County Museum. The museum is situated in the Town Hall, and is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, April to October. Entrance is free. School groups are welcome. The museum is run by volunteers and there are lots of opportunities to get involved; if you would like to help, contact us via our website www.wtm.org.uk or Facebook page, or call in. Talking about Wildlife... The turning of the seasons... As winter turns into spring, new life, colours and sounds in the Dorset landscape are emerging for the beginning of a new season. The winter has been long, so these changes in nature are most welcome, bringing along with them the longer and warmer days we’ve been looking forward to. The first signs of spring will be seeing the seasonal flowers popping up in gardens, woodlands and roadsides. The delicate and iconic snowdrop and daffodil are usually the first brave enough to bloom, despite the occasional frosty day, with the carpets of bluebells to follow in woodland in April and May. The skies will not only be brighter, but they will also be noisier, as birds such as wrens, blackbirds, robins, finches and even waxcaps, prepare for breeding and start their ‘dawn chorus’ in May. The dawn chorus is one of the best wildlife experiences in the UK, and one not to be missed, even if it means an early start (or if you’re a light sleeper!). Birds take part in their chorus as they’re looking for a mate and preparing to breed – if you can get up early enough, they are very active just before dawn, when their predators might be able to hear them, but still can’t quite see them. Butterflies are the next sign of spring. This year, some have been seen as early as January, according to Butterfly Conservation. The most likely species we’ll see will be those which have hibernated over the winter, as the warmer weather entices them out once again. The brimstone, red admiral and peacock are sometimes seen earlier in spring, with many people reporting the

brimstone flitting around hedgerows and in gardens this time of year. Moths can also be seen this early on in the year, and are often mistaken for a butterfly. Moths have a reputation for being drab and brown but this is not always the case as some are bright and vibrant such as the orange underwing or brimstone moth. Meanwhile, in our gardens, the transition between the harsh winter and spring is beginning. Do not presume that wildlife still doesn’t need a helping hand though, and keep putting out food and water for the birds, to help them through the colder days. Other tasks for the garden this time of year include putting up bird boxes and creating ‘wild’ areas with logs and twigs, and building a compost, for wildlife to make a home in your garden. You Know you Need to Make a Will - What Do you Do Next? We like to write articles advising why you should make a Will and what happens when you don’t. But we do not always say what you need to think about when making one and for many people they do not know where to start. You should think about: What have you got to leave in your Will? This is your bank/savings accounts, any investments, your personal possessions and property

Who do you want to leave it to? For example: family members or charities. Also sensible to think about who will inherit if the first person you have named has died before you. Who is going to receive what? This can be through a legacy, which is a set sums of money e.g. Leaving X £500 and/or percentages that people will inherit e.g. A to get 50% of my estate, 25% to B and 25% to C. Who is going to be your Executor? The role of an Executor is an important one, they are the person/s who has the authority and responsibility to sort out your estate and give effect to your wishes when you die. They should be trustworthy and responsible and someone you feel could cope with the role. They can be a beneficiary of the Will but they must be over 18 and you can only have a maximum of 4. An Executor can always employ a Solicitor to help them with the administration of the estate

Do you need to think about a Guardian? Often people will say they have nothing to leave but they do have children under 18. If you have minor children a Will is vitally important. In the Will you can appoint a Guardian who will look after the welfare of your children if you have died.

There is a lot to think about when you make a Will but, you do not need to have all the answers when you sit down in front of your Lawyer to discuss making one. Part of our role is to advise you when making the Will and to assist you in making a decision that is in your best interests, taking into account your circumstances and wishes. Roast Beef with Rosemary & Garlic

Ingredients 1 joint of beef 1 -3 tsp coarse salt(generous amount) 1 -3tsp fresh cracked pepper 1 tbsp fresh rosemary 10 garlic cloves

Settle the joint and let it stand at room temperature for at least 1 hour. 2. Mix the salt and pepper together. 3. Insert some of the rosemary directly into the skin of the joint, scoring with a sharp knife to help you insert it. 4. Preheat the oven to 375oF. 5. Now score the joint in 10 random spots for the garlic. Rub the meat with the seasoning mix. Place cloves into the slices. 6. Place the roast on a rack in the pan with the rosemary top side up. 7. Roast for 1 hour and then turn off oven. 8. Leave the roast in the oven but do not open oven door for 3 hours. 9. About 30 to 40 minutes before serving time, turn oven to 375 oF and reheat the roast. 10. Make sure not to remove roast or re-open the oven door from time roast is put in until 20 minutes before ready to serve. 11. Remove roast 20 minutes after heating.
