would like to take the chance here to remind you of the lovely local pub that sits on the doorstep of the Purbecks. It is the Kings Arms just here in Stoborough. This local gem has just been lovingly refurbished. Although a lot of work has gone into keeping the Kings Arms special it hasn't lost it’s traditional character and local feel. And what a nice space to sit. I went along to get a feel of the Kings Arms, taking my two boys too. The food really speaks for itself but I will say a bit here to give a bit more of the idea. We had some delicious starters and my son, Ryan, really liked the minestrone soup and I must say it did look very generous. Other tempting dishes included the chefs curried salmon & cod fishcakes, Kings Arms seafood platter, smoked duck supreme and a whole range of traditional favourites. There is a “special desert of the day” and other delicious choices. As a general comment on the food, I spoke to Pete, the chef, and he gave some great pointers. It’s a new menu range and of course local produce. The menu changes weekly and the sweets are also homemade. Everything on the menu is gluten free where possible. If this is important to you while dining at the Kings Arms, please mention it or ask to ensure you enjoy your meal. People DO seem to enjoy it too as looking around there were plenty of customers and Damian, the manager, said the Kings Arms was doing well despite the financial climate.

Something to highlight is the offer of “2 courses for £10.95”. This is still running for lunchtimes Monday to Friday. Overall I would rate the Kings Arms a great place eat, a great place to just pop by and a welcoming refreshment stop. Get into Golf for free in Dorset Get into Golf - free! The Dorset Golf Week, from 9-15 April, is an open invitation to all to swing into the sport. Golf clubs are throwing open their doors and staging free taster sessions for all ages as part of a drive to get more people playing the game. Events include sessions for women only, for juniors, for families and for couples. Follow-up opportunities are also available and one club is offering a free 30-day membership on one of its courses, while anoth er has redu ced p rice jun ior memberships. The week is part of an initiative being run across the South West and has been organised by the Dorset Golf Partnership, which works to grow the game and increase participation. Nothing new under the sun! The heading this month has nothing to do with a well-known tabloid newspaper but is a quote from a more enduring journal – The Bible! (Ecclesiastes 1:9) However this month’s comments do refer to news that made the headlines just a few weeks ago. The headline in the Daily Mail read “Christianity under attack”. On reflection it was probably a similar headline that could have appeared in the Jerusalem Chronicle about two thousand years ago! Nothing new there, then! The plain fact is that Christians have been under siege from the world since Jesus walked this earth and things are unlikely to change. In fact the Bible predicts that things will get much worse for people who want to follow Jesus and live by His Words. Certainly over the past few years there have been countless examples of Christians being discriminated against simply for their faith. Even more alarming is that these attitudes are being upheld and sanctioned by the British legal system. Our progressive society talks a lot about equality, and thankfully there have been great strides forward to deal with all kinds of prejudice and bigotry. But somehow Christianity has been put into a separate category and the rights of devout Christians are now considered to be less important than those of every other section of society. The latest example of this in my view is the recent judgement banning prayers at Council Meetings in Devon. This ruling has set another dangerous precedent that no doubt will be jumped on. Apparently the complainant was an atheist ex-councillor who said he was embarrassed by the tradition, despite not being obliged to take part! I have attended both secular weddings and humanistic funeral services where references to anything remotely religious are not allowed, and although I may have some sadness in my heart, I certainly wouldn’t campaign to have them banned. Surely this is part of our democracy. In His recent book, “We don’t do God: The Marginalisation of Public Faith”, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, rightly points out the inherent danger of marginalising the faith that has helped to shape virtually every facet of British life – from morality and literature to education and art. Yet atheists and groups such as The National Secular Society appear to be ‘hell-bent’, and I use that term deliberately and literally, on transforming Great Britain into a ‘secular democracy’. Let’s hope that sanctified common sense will prevail and we don’t now see pressure groups to ban prayers before Parliament, or secularise the Coronation Oath; or maybe rewrite the lyrics of our National Anthem to remove that embarrassing reference about ‘God saving our gracious Queen’. I whole heartedly embrace George Carey’s thoughts when he writes – “We Christians need to be more muscular and vigorous in defence of our faith and it needs to be more widely understood that this faith is not something we leave behind when we go to work.” Well said! Our great Role Model in all this is the Lord Jesus Christ, whom we follow. He was not afraid to stand up and speak out against religious deception and idolatry; bad morals and self-indulgent attitudes. But in the midst of this uncompromising stand, He always demonstrated humility and true meekness - stemming from a heart that loved the sinner but hated the sin. May each of us take a moment to reflect and be grateful that, for all the problems in our land, we still live in one of the oldest and most stable democracies in the world, one that has been shaped by broadly Christian principles for centuries. At the very least we should give respect to our founding faith and those who seek to live by its values and not demonise or marginalise them for their beliefs. The Purbeck Association of The National Trust March sees a milestone for our Association. Around the start of the month our members received the 50th edition of our Newsletter, Purbeck In Trust. We produce two each year. They contain news, details of our programme of events, and booking forms. Looking back to our start, the Newsletter reminds me of the changes that we’ve seen over that period. What began as duplicated sheets is now a professionally printed A5 booklet running to 24 pages with an eye-catching yellow cover (although I should say of course that it’s not nearly as smart as the magazine that you’re reading this in right now). This is no disrespect to our predecessors. Nowadays we have all the advantages. Committee members and others send their contributions by email; our editor assembles everything using publishing software, and the finished article goes to the printer as a single computer file. Even distributing the Newsletter is easier. Our membership’s details are kept on a database, and we can print off address labels with a simple click of a button. Why not get more out of your National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us? Our annual membership is great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple.
