Dear residents of Wareham and the surrounding area, We are coming to my favourite time of year, the summer. I love nothing better than to sit in the garden with a cup of coffee listening to our beautiful English bird songs. It is also great to be able to go out and see new places, visit friends and enjoy some space, whether it is by our amazing coastline with some of the best beaches in England, the New Forest in all its splendor and magnificent wildlife or in the countryside, we have it all here on our doorstep. Daichi, The Dashing Dude, our new Purbeck Publications Campervan took us to the rolling hills of the Purbecks this month, to see Dinosaur Footprints! What a great day out that was. Good family fun at its best. I do hope you enjoy reading about our exploits, it is just for fun and we hope it gives you some ideas for yourself. We live such busy, hectic lives, it is good to balance it with some time out and good company. We have also been working hard and now have a brand-new website which we are thrilled with! Rotary Club of Wareham News Update On Saturday 9th March the annual Daffodil party took place at the Parish Hall on the Quay in Wareham. The event has taken place every year for at least the last thirty years and is well received by all those who attend. This year 96 people were invited with all stages of mobility and 88 people came with transport being provided in four mini busses courtesy of Wareham Disabled, the Lions Club and Wareham MS. An absolute scrumptious tea of sandwiches, savouries, homemade cakes and scones was enjoyed being provided by Wareham Rotary. It was an afternoon of entertainment with friendly bingo and the Land Girls
performing a repertoire of 50’s and 60’s songs. To end the afternoon each person went home with a small bouquet of daffodils provided by Wareham Rotary. A wonderful time was had by all at this much loved annual event.

News from Westminster Visiting schools and meeting school pupils when they come to Westminster is a part of my job that I particularly enjoy. Let me give some examples of both. Firstly here in Dorset, I was delighted to be invited by the head boy to visit and be grilled by sixth form students at Purbeck School. They asked a wide range of questions ranging from climate change, to policing, to school funding. We wish our young people well as they sit their GCSE and A-level exams, and it is good to know that they are so well-informed and have such diverse interests and views. I also visited Bearwood Primary school for the opening of their new outdoor gym. I had supported their application for this funding and so I was particularly pleased to have been able to attend. Keeping children and young people active is an important part of keeping them healthy, and having an outdoor gym is a fantastic idea to help with that. I am hoping to visit some of our local sports’ clubs for young people over the summer. Being involved in sport has been a really important aspect of my life, both at school and beyond, and I know that there are many volunteers working incredibly hard for our young people across Dorset, providing some amazing opportunities. Back in Westminster, I was delighted to welcome Allenbourn Middle School to Parliament a few weeks ago. I described the workings of the House of Commons as a bit like an iceberg. The tip of the iceberg, the most visible part, is the Chamber of the House of Commons. But there is a vast amount of other work that goes on, much of it unseen. All Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) fall very much into the latter category. APPGS are informal cross-party groups run by and for Members of the Commons and Lords. I am in the All Party Group for autism which has a range of objectives. These include raising awareness of issues affecting people with autism and Asperger syndrome, and listening to them, their families and carers. Recently I was very pleased to attend the first ever autism awareness session for MPs in Parliament. This was run by two National Autistic Society staff members,
and included helpful advice on making my surgeries more autism friendly. Staying with the education theme, I recently invited all of our local head teachers and chair of governors to attend a meeting at Corfe Hills school. There were a number of issues to discuss, but the reason I called the meeting was to hear directly about school funding. There have been improvements to the way the government calculates funding for schools in Dorset and Poole, but there is much more work still to be done. I will be gathering the evidence from those schools and lobbying the Treasury to ensure that fair funding becomes a reality. The Handwritten Letter Appreciation Society Back in October 2017 I set up The Handwritten Letter Appreciation Society to inspire people to keep writing letters to each other. We have had the loveliest year and a half spreading the word about our “handwritten letter revival” and “quiet revolution in the art of intimacy”, and have met so many interesting people and organisations on the way. A highlight of last year was our inaugural outing to Purbeck Valley Folk Festival where Plankbridge Ltd very generously loaned us their Writer’s Hut of Chelsea Flower Show fame as our wow factor, for the duration of the weekend. It was amazing the response to our stand and the hut and the idea of putting handwritten letters back on the map for everyone. All sorts of fascinating folk stopped by including lots of musicians and authors and Roger Finn (from BBC South) with his daughter to see what we were up to. The musician Hannah Scott came to sing her song “Letter” on the steps of the hut and Korby Lenker all the way from Nashville, Tennessee, hung out with us writing letters and inspiring others to do the same. We celebrated our first birthday last October, have appeared on BBC Radio Solent Breakfast in Dorset with a little recorded piece including some children from Corfe Castle Primary School. Hannah Scott recorded the backing track especially so they could use it and will be doing a proper version of it as a single. The song really is lovely and says it all. We’ve held letter writing workshops at Chococo in Swanage and Dorset International Women’s Day in Dorchester. We are going to Swanage Fish Festival in June, we’re just waiting for confirmation about the Chalke Valley History Festival, and we’ll be at Purbeck Valley Folk Festival again in August. Some particularly lovely highlights have been receiving a letter from Stephen Fry which said “Bravo for setting up The Handwritten Letter Appreciation Society”, one from Dame Vera Lynn just before her 102nd birthday which said “Your Society sounds truly interesting - writing letters is a lovely art, and I am glad to know you are keeping it alive”, and one from Abigail Thaw who said “Lovely website!”
One of the best feelings is to hear people say that THLAS has inspired them to write letters again. Plankbridge have very kindly agreed that they would let us borrow the Writer’s Hut again for Chalke Valley History Festival which is amazing so for Purbeck Valley Folk Festival I decided it would be really fun to see if I could get a Gypsy Caravan instead this year. I felt it was rather a big ask as we don’t have any budget but people are utterly lovely and after writing a letter to Derek and Carole Ambridge in Devon they wrote back to say they would be really happy to bring not just one but two of their Romany Wagons. As you can imagine I am over the moon. Below is a photograph of one of the ones they sent me. They are stunning. The story behind them is brilliant too. I haven’t heard the full version but Carole said they “bought a rotten shed on wheels at an auction by mistake” but her very clever husband converted it. Finally just to say we have 122 members from all over the world including England, Wales, Ireland, the USA, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, China, Africa and Australia. Talking about Wildlife...
The Underwater World Whether you’re one minute away from the beach or one hour, for many of us, living so close to the sea is one of the best things about living in Dorset. Already this year, our marine conservation team have been finding exciting and unusual things washed up on our beaches at low tide. The ‘furrowed crab’ was a great find with it being the first recording of this species for Kimmeridge. This crab is also a ‘climate change indicator species’ as we’re seeing them spread further north, in line with our seas warming up. Other seashore species which have been spreading eastwards into Dorset include the ‘toothed topshells’. These sea snails are common further west but have grown from none at all in the early 2000s to being a common find at Kimmeridge. The small cushion starfish has also become common at Kimmeridge since the first sighting in 2014, and the exotic-looking anemone shrimp that lives within the stinging tentacles of the snakelocks anemone, has also increased in number in recent years. This year, World Oceans Day is celebrating our oceans, encouraging everyone to get out and explore their nearest coastline. You could take part in a 2-minute beach clean, try some rockpooling, or even see what rainbow colour wonders lie in the gardens beneath the seas with DWT’s snorkel trail at Kimmeridge. Seahorses: There have been an unusual amount of seahorses washed up on beaches this year. This could be a good indicator that we have a healthy population in Dorset. Let us know if you find one! 2. Cushion starfish: In rockpools, the cushion star glides along on its myriad tiny tube-feet, as if sliding on ice. This small relative of star fish feeds by everting part of its stomach through its mouth to digest dead and decaying animals and seaweed. 3. Flat periwinkle: Look for the flat periwinkle in seaweedy pools. They range in colour from sunshine yellow, through burnt orange to chocolate brown and are easy to spot amongst the sea wrack fronds they graze on. The yellow shells are particularly easy to spot, looking like discarded sweetcorn kernels! By Sally Welbourn

Thousands descend on Lulworth Castle for Dorset Blind Association’s annual Motor Show Thousands visited Lulworth Castle last month to support Dorset Blind Association’s annual Motor Show which took place on Sunday 12th May. This hugely successful and well attended event showcased over 180 cars in the motor display and welcomed over 3,000 general public visitors, raising an incredible £8,285.70 for the local sight loss charity! This prestigious event, now in its fifth year was held within the picturesque Lulworth Estate courtesy of James Weld DL, who is the charity’s President. The event set motorists out on a 20 mile tour around the Dorset countryside, following in convoy, before returning to Lulworth to display their beautiful motors at the Castle Showground. The event saw thousands of local supporters, holiday makers and car enthusiasts descend on the Castle throughout the day, creating an incredible community buzz. The Lulworth Castle Motor Show was open to the public free of charge and had something for all ages to enjoy; a range of local stalls selling handmade goods and local produce,
entertainment from the Gugge Band, a kids area with bouncy castle, face painting and an exclusive visit from the ever popular Peppa Pig! Attendees enjoyed relaxing in the afternoon sun with refreshments from The Fizz Tin, Hitch n Hop, The Heavenly Crepe, The Falafel Den and Dorset Catering Services, who also supplied the refreshments before the Dorset Tour to the car owners. Jan Jones, event attendee and owner of The Fizz Tin, said, ‘What a perfect day! We felt so lucky to be involved once again with this magnificent car show. An excellent turnout! The visitors seemed to love the new food and refreshment area too, enhanced by the beautiful weather and backdrop of Lulworth Castle. Incredibly well organised, with the friendliest charity staff and volunteers! The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Daichi, otherwise known as “The Dashing Dude”, our new Purbeck Publications Campervan, sees himself as a young, playful yet rather debonair kind of guy, so when he decided to take us to see the Dinosaur Footprints in the Purbecks, we were rather surprised. How can anything be that old!? (I did not look in the mirror this morning…) How on earth can these footprints be engraved for so long in the hard Purbeck stone? What a feat of nature. Our Jurassic Coastline is packed with amazing history for us to explore and marvel at, and Daichi could not wait to get us there. Dashing along the country roads, bouncing over the hills with magnificent views over the rolling countryside, Daichi was in his element. He is so glad he travelled over thousands of miles of terrain to finally arrive on our beautiful English soil.
Daichi braves the wind at Swanage
Daichi serves up lunch... with a view! The footprints can be found at Keats Quarry along the Priest’s Way on the Purbeck Coastline. Can you believe that these dinosaurs roamed our land some 140 million years ago! (Maybe I do not feel so bad about my age after all.) Yes, that long ago and we can still see their footprints today, fossilized in the rock. It is thought that this was a shallow lagoon where these brachiosaurs (translated as “arm lizard”) would gather to drink together. They were long necked plant eating dinosaurs, around 50 tonnes each, or five times the weight of a modern elephant, and measured more than 25 metres from nose to tail. Wow, that’s BIG! The environment was very different then too and shows the ever-changing climate that we live in. It is believed that this area was a sub-tropical wilderness of coastal forests and swamps. Over time, the footprints left in the soft mud were covered over by layers of

27 rock and preserved as the fossils we see today. Hayden had great fun trying to step from footprint to footprint, to literally follow in the dinosaurs’ footsteps. He finished up leaping (boys…) across at full stride, but even that was not enough. These dinosaurs were massive. Quarrymen Kevin Keates and Trevor Haysom discovered this amazing find in 1997 when the site was still being worked and Daichi is certainly glad they did. What a find! The famous Dancing Ledge is nearby and Daichi was all ears when he found out that this pool was blasted out of the rocks by a former headmaster of Dunford School, so that the pupils could swim in the summer. The school sadly no longer exits but its salty water pool enjoyed by thousands over the years is a playful legacy it has left behind. It so happens that Hayden, our son had been doing his Duke of Edinburgh Award with his school, and by chance he had done his expedition in the Purbecks with his friends. They had walked for two full days, carrying all their equipment,
One small step for a dinosaur... from the car park at the Sandbanks Chain Ferry to Corfe Castle where they camped for the night, then onto Swanage the next day. They looked pretty exhausted, but all were smiling when they arrived triumphant at their destination. I am sure the dinosaurs would have done this route in no time, with those powerfully long, yet graceful legs. It is fascinating to think that these boys and girls in 2019 took a very similar route to those amazing, extinct creatures of yesteryear, some 140 million years ago. Now there is a thought… Daichi was very proud he took us to somewhere we had never been before. That is his purpose, with his chirpy step and tooting horn. Where will he take us next, I wonder? Tastes so good... Spanish Baked Eggs
A taste from the Costas – ideal served as lunch with a fresh green salad, and eaten al fresco (if the British Summer weather allows!) A perfect holiday reminder that’s quick and easy to prepare.
Ingredients for 4 servings 4 x large free range eggs 100g sliced chorizo 1 onion finely sliced 1 red/yellow pepper sliced 2 crushed garlic cloves ½ tsp paprika 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp. olive oil Chopped parsley
1. Pre-heat oven to 200c/Fan180C/400F/Gas Mark 6 2. In a heated pan, add olive oil and lightly cook the chorizo and onion for about 4 minutes until soft. Add the pepper and cook. 3. Stir in the paprika and garlic and cook for about a minute before adding the tomatoes to the pan. Simmer until all ingredients are soft. 4. Pour into an ovenproof dish, make four wells and carefully crack the eggs over the mixture into each well, cover with foil and bake in pre-heated oven for approx. 10 minutes or until the eggs are just set but the yolks should still be runny.
Serve with: Green Salad Crusty/toasted bread
5. Optional – you can add some parsley to top the baked mixture Serve with a fresh green salad of your choice with crusty or toasted bread, and enjoy. Try varying the ingredients for new tastes, for example with extra peppers, sliced potato or even baked beans.

On Your Plot
Expanding your horizons Summer, sunshine and strawberries, June is a truly wonderful month! In this time of plentiful growth we take a look at making the most of your waste clippings by turning them into lovely rich compost to use next year, and also how to make the most of every inch of your space.
Jobs for June :-
• Take off the side shoots from tomato plants to avoid them becoming too bushy and overburdened with fruit. Water regularly. • Garlic that was planted in the Autumn should be maturing now. Lift when the leaves start to shrivel and leave to dry in a warm spot. • Keep planting - the moist soil, higher temperatures and long days are ideal growing conditions. French beans, courgettes and salad crops can all be sown now. • Watch out for pests! Think about protecting brassicas before caterpillars start to become a problem. Every year it amazes me how the plants respond so dramatically to the arrival of the warm weather. Anything sown or planted out in May seems to positively leap out of the ground and shoot skywards, in many cases quickly catching up with earlier sowings! Of course the lawn is no exception and if you don’t already have a composting system in place then why not set one up now and make use of some of those endless grass clippings? Ideally you want to have two (or even three) compost bins so that when one is ready to use for the garden you have another filling up and rotting down. You can buy allsorts of nifty looking, ready made, compost bins - some even have clever devices that make it easy to turn the whole bin to help the waste break down - but you don’t need anything fancy. You can just start a compost heap in an out of the way corner, enclosing it with old pallets, or wire mesh wrapped around four stakes if you want to keep it looking a little neater. So what should you compost?
Well any dead organic matter will decompose naturally but you should aim for a good mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ ingredients. Lawn trimmings, veg leaves and peelings provide the green element and you should add a reasonable balance of brown items such as shredded paper, straw, eggshells and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag. Turning the heap occasionally will accelerate the breakdown and covering with an old carpet when it is full will also help. Leave for several months and you should have some great compost! June is also the time of year when it is easy to start to run out of space on your plot. Everything puts on amazing growth spurts and you are suddenly left wondering where you are going to plant out those tomatoes that you’ve been nurturing in the greenhouse, or finding you’ve no room for the cabbages that you’d like to be eating later in the year. Time to expand your horizons and make full use of containers and of your borders. Look at the different varieties of lettuce and salad crops - many of these, along with cabbages, can add a splash of decorative, coloured foliage to your borders (and be eaten too!!!). Grow bags are wonderful for crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. They’ll be happy in a sunny spot on your patio but do remember to water and feed regularly. Larger pots can house courgettes and pumpkins, with the exotic looking flowers adding a bright splash of colour. Even hanging baskets can get in on the grow your own act! Look for suitable strawberries or tomatoes and you could be treated to a bumper crop of luscious fruit tumbling down from above.

What’s On 2019… Wimborne Folk Festival
The famous Wimborne Folk Festival returns to the town. We’re taking part with Morris dancers, music sessions, crafts, games, face painting and lots more! The folk festival was established in 1982 and received over 70,000 visitors in 2018. Poole Harbour Boat Show The fifth annual Poole Harbour Boat Show, in association with Sunseeker, will return to our shores this June, from its award-winning home, the Poole Quay Boat Haven. With over 32,000 people in attendance in 2018 the Show, organised by Poole Harbour Commissioners, continues to be the biggest-ever, FREE to attend Boat Show on the south coast. The Boat Show’s ambitions and theme are to get people ‘on the water’, particularly young people. In addition to more than an anticipated 200 exhibitors, over 100 boats will be on the water, including tall ships, celebrity style yachts and motors cruises. There will also be an impressive line-up of ‘on the water’ activities and workshops which includes: Taster sessions: For those who want to see which water sport suits them best, there will be FREE taster sessions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
